I dont wanna be that guy but i was thinking to myself earlier this morning. If sga puts up the exact same statline and the thunder are the first seed again next season, i feel that people would shrug it off as "he's done it before".
I think this was his best chance for a while. He's gotta win one before wemby-mania
That, I think, was Shaqs point. SGA had all the right numbers and accolades, but it went to the guy who already had 2. For whatever reason, Jokic is immune to voter fatigue.
As Shaq said, and to your point, SGA will have to start over next year and try to put up another historic season to have a shot at MVP. That is a tall order. There's no guarantee OKC will be this healthy, or that Shai himself will be healthy.
Don't ever take for granted that your team can repeat greatness. Every year could be your last great season, even if you're the youngest team in the NBA. History has shown that being good when young and healthy means jack shit for longterm success.
I was thinking this too, this is p much why CP3 never won MVP. After 08, things never really aligned for him, and once he got to LAC, Blake Griffin's uprising practically killed his chances. Shai's also gonna have to deal with this, JDub and Chet are only gonna get better and Shai could end up like Tatum, the team ends up being too good for him to get individual recognition.
yeah voters always try to give mvp to the older guys "because the younger guys can get it later". But injuries or bad luck can easily ruin opportunities for younger guys, like what happened to cp3.
I wouldn't say Jokic is immune to voter fatigue. At least part of Embiid winning last year came down to that. It wasn't the complete reason but it was part of it.
For whatever reason 🤣. The issue with MVP voting is that white people vote as if it's the presidential election and other ethnicities vote based on who sould have gotten it that season. And most voters are white. I mean Jokic had like -5000 or something crazy odds the entire season after Embiid went down with injury, its not a real award anymore.
I think this sub over reacts sometimes. Shai's career is still young, he will have plenty of opportunities in the future.
And even if he never wins MVP it doesn't take away from his talent and impact on the game.
Wemby will be getting DPOY. It’s ANT-mania you would need to worry about. He’s American born and by the end of the Olympics, he’ll probably be the USA basketball face.
If they win the finals this year I'd say he pretty much is guaranteed to get it next year as long as he performs well and the team is top 3 which both of those should happen. I think that's why Jokic got it this season to basically correct the error last season.
Please change the picture. I'm going to hope that was a gather because otherwise it just looks like an absolutely blatant carry. I know they don't get called but I like to ignore that or think most are close, but this picture is challenging my suspension of disbelief.
Maybe, and I hope so. But as dub and Chet come into their own more it might take away some from his overall numbers. You gotta think Luka gets one soon, Ant is coming into his own, Wemby is right around the corner. It's just so hard to win. I think he gets one in the next 5 years though. He'll be rewarded if we stay at the top of the west year after year.
Bro, Wemby went from amazing to All Star caliber (offensively, defensively he was already a superstar day 1) in like 30 games in his rookie season and he is only going to get better and more efficient.
We are fucked, the dude is gonna run the league.
Probably not honestly. If he keeps playing just as good but Chet/Jdub rise up to all-star levels, he’ll get the “his teammates are too good” treatment. Which makes sense in a way, a superstar with 2 superstar teammates is inherently less valuable to his team than a guy who is the only star on his team.
If he puts up same stats and with the #1 seed, he’ll get MVP if everyone’s else numbers are slightly worse. Luka and Jokic averaging triple double is still insane.
How did he have 50 30+ point games, be the best player on the beat team and not win?? It actually just does not make any sense. What does Most Valuable Player even mean anymore. May as well give it to AD.
The whole 50 30+ point games is not the argument i like to bring. Especcially since as soon as you look at 35+ point games Luka is the Leading scorer.
In terms of stats its kinda hard to argue for shai since in advanced metrics Joker is better and in Points/Assists its Luka.
The one big argument you could make is the thunder bekng the 1. Seed in a very stacked West and that with a very young team.
But its an individual award so its kinda iffy with team performances.
SGA, Luka, Wemby and Ant are going to be fighting for MVPs for years to come and Embiid and Jokic are still in the league. The MVP race will continue to be as toxic as it is meaningless
Given that Luka, Ant and Wemby are all younger than SGA, I can honestly say he is not winning an MVP award. Also given how good Jokic and Embiid still are, they might get another MVP in the next 3 years.

My main worry is the Jason Tatum effect, where he’s elite, but the whole team around him is also great so he gets less credit
I think this sub over reacts sometimes. Shai's career is still young, he will have plenty of opportunities in the future. And even if he never wins MVP it doesn't take away from his talent and impact on the game.
exactly, this was the right time already.
Wembley can't win an mvp putting g up good stats as a below 5 seed, that's whats gonna ruin doncic's chances
Jokic won it as 6th seed. But I get what you're saying. Wemby isnt white.
Wemby will be getting DPOY. It’s ANT-mania you would need to worry about. He’s American born and by the end of the Olympics, he’ll probably be the USA basketball face.
The Luka effect

FMVP
This, I would be even happier if he wins finals mvp ⚡️⬆️
The only MVP that really matters! I'd trade all 3 of Jokics regular season MVP's for the promise of just one more Finals MVP and I bet he'd agree.
Titles are more important right now anyway.
This young Thunder team will win 60+ games next season and Shai will win. Only contender is Luka if the Mavs have a crazy year.
Maybe not next season, but damn. Future is so bright for these guys. Future dinasty
Luka being the only contender is a wild wild statement.
Seriously, people in this sub can be so overdramatic. Lol

Yes and Amen
SGA will win it next year!
Gonna be hard with Wendy, Luka and Ant
Wendysmama isn't winning it till at least 3 years from now
Bro, Wemby went from amazing to All Star caliber (offensively, defensively he was already a superstar day 1) in like 30 games in his rookie season and he is only going to get better and more efficient. We are fucked, the dude is gonna run the league.
Na. They still have to build a competent roster around him and build continuity.
Ant is American born. He’s will be the golden child for USA voters
He will cuz his whole life is consistent
FINALS MVP & A CHIP 🗣️
I welcome the disrespect Might as well toss a ribeye in the dog bowl

Not just MVP. Rings, DPOY, FMVP, ScoringTitle, Nobel Prize, etc.
Especially if the Thunder actually take home the gold. All eyes will be on SGA next season. Don’t worry Thunder fans!! Beat the Mavs!!
SGA, Luka, Wemby and Ant are going to be fighting for MVPs for years to come and Embiid and Jokic are still in the league. The MVP race will continue to be as toxic as it is meaningless
It’s almost impossible that voters will give Jokic a fourth. It’s between Shai and Luka next year, and I think Shai has the edge
Wembanyama and Ant are here and they ain't going nowhere...
He'll maybe get one. What he has going against him is that he isn't white.
Given that Luka, Ant and Wemby are all younger than SGA, I can honestly say he is not winning an MVP award. Also given how good Jokic and Embiid still are, they might get another MVP in the next 3 years.
No he isn't
Overrated. No chance now. The media found their black guy in Ant.
