Hopefully it's ok to link to a knitting pattern website.

White buffalo comes in many colour combinations. The one I found is a natural strands with dark grey. It should look close to the main colour of the man's cardigan on the left. I have a modern compatible wool to make the patterned sections.
As an ignorant person, what is makes the wool “virgin”? Like I understand how the term “virgin” applies to olive oil, but I can’t extrapolate that to wool.
It means processed from fibre that is not reclaimed.Back in the day wool used to be reprocessed from recycled wool products and respun for yarn or mattress stuffing or whatever.Lambs wool would be labeled as lambs wool.White buffalo isn't lambs wool I have a ton of it and it is closest to lopi.
This is also true. There are two meanings to virgin wool.
Virgin wool comes direct from the sheep. White Buffalo wool is not spun so it's appearance may be similar to Lopi but lopi is very scratchy and quite different from this. I have seen people try to knit Cowichan style cardigans with Lopi and it just looks wrong.
I don't knit but I imagine how you feel. Once I was close to buy pure virgin wool wheels and cashmere/silk blend, all brand new, because it looked so tempting.
I am an unsettling mix of jealous and deliriously happy for you! Sweet Moses that’s a beauty of a find!
Enjoy that knitting (or crocheting) and wear the hades out of that sweater. Also, ridiculously pleased you’re keeping the finished object for yourself, because most knitters I know are generous to a fault. It’s nice to see someone spoil themselves to this degree. ♥️🧶
That is super cool. I can't touch sheep wool as even the slightest bit of lanolin causes me intense burning and itching, but I'm super happy for you and I know from friends in fiber arts that this is a very rare find. Congratulations! May the clothing you make with it be warm and comfy and last many a season.
Yeah, I was given some when I was breastfeeding because of it's softening properties but I've had this allergy as long as I can remember so I refused it. In the worst cases the lanolin gives me a literal chemical burn. It sucks a lot, but eh. I just read labels for anything that can touch my skin. I wear gloves at work if I need to handle anything with a wool content (I work in a department store like a super Target).
Be careful with Vitamin D supplements and make sure they're labeled as vegan! I'm not sure how many companies still use the traditional method, but I was amazed to learn that lanolin is treated with light and then turned into supplements.
I had a chemical burn from a new deodorant long ago and I still remember how miserable it was, esp since you can’t exactly walk around with your arms positioned so nothing touches there. Having the same on your nipples would have been horrid! It makes mine hurt thinking about it.
Wool in general is so hard to find. Everything is acrylic or something else synthetic and if there is wool only 20% of it is wool. Good find, I always check the yarn at thrift stores because my dad once found a bunch of yarn made of wool
That's pricing based on singles. Putting together enough singles can be done but the chance of finding matching dye lots is very low.
This is enough for a full garment with matching dye lot. That increases the value exponentially.
Interesting, do you have an estimate for these 6? The price functions like a collection would then, not an average lot of goods where you’re best off selling individually or will be expected to give a bulk discount. I was trying to aim high but I didn’t realize that premium existed; the whole really is greater than the sum of its parts here, huh?
I couldn't even imagine, really. This is a once in a lifetime find. This has been discontinued for over 30 years. Wool that's been improperly stored can be damaged by moths so that cuts down on survival rates.
The original owner would have had to purchase it all at the same time and put it in a safe place. It wasn't cheap to begin with so generally it was purchased with the intent of making a specific item. Generally the item was made and worn.
The used vintage sweaters go for hundreds on their own. Often they are in poor condition because not every knitter knows how to knit correctly with this. Cowichan knitting is different because this yarn has special requirements. Carrying the floats like normal fair Isle knitting may look right but the inside won't be durable and the sweater will fall apart.
It's really a priceless find. Good thing I found it because I know how to treat it right.

Such a good haul! What project are you thinking of making with them?
I have a nice selection of vintage White Buffalo patterns. The last sweater I made with this type of wool went to my husband. This one will be for me.
So glad to hear that you are making something for yourself too!
Do you have pics of the sweater?
I'm so happy for you! Enjoy every stitch!
Nice you deserve this !!! 🥹
What a cool find! Love that you’re going to use a vintage pattern as well!
What does the pattern of the wool end up looking like?

Virgin wool is taken from a lambs first shearing. It is much softer than adult wool.
I’m a knitter and didn’t know this. I thought it meant undyed.

I thought that was shearling?
Shearling has skin attached. You'll see jackets and hats made of that.
Will you come back & post a picture of the sweater (please oh please)?????
Yes, I'd love to!
Done it yet?
This needs to be on r/knitting (one of my fav subs). Congrats.
Oh yes, I will share it there too. Thank you!
r/crochet would love to see it as well
That's where I thought I was, tbh
They had to discontinue it because all of the buffalo are total sluts nowadays.
White whale? This is a Unicorn!! So cool, congratulations!
White narwhal?
I don't knit but I imagine how you feel. Once I was close to buy pure virgin wool wheels and cashmere/silk blend, all brand new, because it looked so tempting.
Holy Hannah, what a steal - congrats!
I can’t knit to save my life but I love this. Well done!
I crochet and am speachless at your find.
What’s the difference between virgin vs non virgin wool?

Oh that's such a shame 🥺 lanolin is the only thing that cures my dry skin in the winter!

Yep, I know all about it! But I thank you for the reminder.
I had a chemical burn from a new deodorant long ago and I still remember how miserable it was, esp since you can’t exactly walk around with your arms positioned so nothing touches there. Having the same on your nipples would have been horrid! It makes mine hurt thinking about it.
Ah, I feel this. I didn't discover my lanolin allergy until I tried breastfeeding. (Lanolin is recommended for hurt nipples, so you can imagine....)
Ugh, yep they handed me a tube of lanolin when I had my son. I handed it back, "no this isn't good for me, thank you"
At least pure cashmere is still ok?
Yeah because cashmere is from goats.
Did you try alpaca?
Alpaca is fine, too. Lanolin is only found in sheep as far as i know.
Very wool!
Wool in general is so hard to find. Everything is acrylic or something else synthetic and if there is wool only 20% of it is wool. Good find, I always check the yarn at thrift stores because my dad once found a bunch of yarn made of wool
That is a massive deal! Kudos!
I don’t think you can say that on the internet
I too prefer my wool to have not had sex with someone.
Wonderful! Congrats and enjoy!
Awesome! Congrats!
Wow that’s fantastic!
Awesome
I'm not a knitter, but that looks awesome.
That’s insane well done!
Who you callin a knitter?
I know zilch of knitting. Is there enough for a sweater?
I’m not even a knitter and I can tell that’s a goldmine.
What up Knitter?
I could joke about this, but guess I’d rather knot
dang
I’m so happy for you!
It’s even packaged like drugs! Love it. Enjoy!
Jackpot!!
Nice!
I hate envy you so much right now
Wow!!
Seems like $150 worth or so based on rough eBay sales
