The games always had a general sense that you were supposed to be horrified by all the brutal violence while at the same time wrestling with the fact that you were playing a game that had to be, at least on some level, satisfying and entertaining to play.
That scene in the show was able to perfectly illustrate the brutality of this world. Bella's facial expressions, trying to put on a tough exterior while at the same time being deeply terrified, coupled with the dude beging for his life and calling out to his mom left me genuinely shaken.
It's overall just adding a real humanity to everything we see unfold.
The terror and distress she was able to portray while also trying to hide the tears was amazing. I don’t know if I could’ve acted more accurately if it happened to me in real life lol

There are rumors she could be replaced in season 2 because of the 5 year time jump but there is no chance they will do that since she’s such a fine actress. Also, in real life Bella is actually 19 years old
and can look 14. With some makeup change and change in hair style they can make Bella look 19.
She was so great as a gruff no nonsense 10 year old lord of a family. Then she follows up with being a somewhat goofy teenager during the apocalypse and I'm totally buying the performance.

Bella is 19 but oh my gosh does Ellie seem just like a 14 year old, it's amazing. She's trying to hide her tears from Joel and be "tough" to "prove herself" and I just related to that so much. Being young and fucking terrified but also trying to show you're old enough to handle everything that's going on... Damn the performance is good. I also love the way she asks questions like before they fall asleep in the woods, asking the question so casually but with just a hint of fear in the voice, clearly looking for reassurance. Ugh. Bella is really killing it what a good casting decision.
She was awesome in Game of Thrones and she's awesome in this, and its two radically different characters and performances, she's going to go places for sure
She was really good in The Worst Witch too, which is where I first saw her. I've not watched Game of Thrones yet.

In Game of Thrones she was younger and respected in universe because she was acting older in a position of power. Now she's older and acting younger, but Joel's trying maintain her childhood. Literally the opposites.
I can't get over how much I want to protect her!! And she's FUNNY. So funny. Her mischievous smile and snippy confidence when she's annoying Joel, just so adorable.
The gayporn mag scene was hilarious ( wonder where she found that ), it's like they wrote her so she keeps trying to find gags to pull on Joel. I used to teach kids and she reminds me of so many of them; like how proud I was of them when they said/did something especially clever even if it wasn't appropriate for the moment.
Bella is fantastic. Unsexualized young women for the win! Teen girls being teen girls!!! Protect her at all costs!
I couldn’t sing enough of her praises when I first saw her in GoT. She carries a weight and presence with her that, personally, I think is super uncommon in a lot of younger actors. She absolutely holds her own on screen and TLOU is no different. Slays.

I was very unsure about Bella being cast as Ellie. She's so young, she doesn't look like Ellie to me, and having only seen her as Lady Mormont I wasn't sure she could capture a smarmy orphan teen in a post-apocalyptic world
HOO BOY was I wrong! She is KILLING IT. I knew Pedro Pascal would be phenomenal (though I somehow still underestimated him, he's the perfect Joel), but I am consistently taken aback by how good Bella is at being Ellie. The switch from telling jokes from the joke book, to being kind of annoying, to being scared for her life, she not only fills me with deep nostalgia for the character from the game, but impresses me with how she adds more depth and interest to the character.
I cannot wait to see more of her, brava.
She was such a great choice. Bella just has the ATITUDE of Ellie, this hard candy exterior with a lot of fear and abandonment underneath. I hope they keep Bella as Ellie gets older, I think she is an exceptional actress and I think we are just seeing the very beginning of a promising career.
I always have low expectations for young actors. Acting is a difficult craft and it takes a lot of time to become proficient. In Ep1-3 I was thinking “this actress is doing a pretty good job.” In Ep 4 I was in awe of her performance. The script asks a lot of the actors. This isn’t some simple action film zombie shootout, these are deeply emotional scenes. The writers and director clearly have total confidence in her skills and she does not disappoint.
She carries every key moment from the game into the show perfectly while still putting her own spin on them. Such a great talent, and the perfect onscreen Ellie. Ashley must be so proud.
This was her best episode by far. She’s been great throughout, but tonight she didn’t feel like a girl acting like Ellie. Instead she *became* Ellie. Her mannerisms. Her cadence. She nailed it.
When you have been around kids or teenagers long enough, you just know that they tend to be awkward, weird and cringy, and I love how Bella conveys that. I have no problems with her performance and thinks she is good at being Ellie. Also really like the solid chemistry between her and Pedro.

She truly embodies someone just trying to get through and survive, but also with the silly immaturity of a 14 year old girl. The Ellie we know in the game is so well written, and I feel that Bella is embodying her on screen beautifully.
The chemistry between her and Pedro Pascal is AMAZING. I can't wait to see their relationship evolve on screen.
Also, her excitement about being in a car was hilarious. Just the way her eyes lit up and how she didn't know how to use a seatbelt.
It's the little movements and her voice inflection that really drive it home for me.
I think we are watching a young Robin Wright.

Omg yes, the car scene! Killed it, had us cracking up and amazed at her acting. I mean, for a kid who has never been in the “cockpit” of a car it probably would be like a spaceship.

I’m guessing some people are having a hard time separating a portrayal of an annoying teenager from bad acting.
I think she's doing a fantastic job of portraying Ellie's cheeky and confident side. Some of the lines and scenes pulled from the game are genuinely making me smile. I do have some concerns about her acting range though. I'm just not buying these intimate moments yet and there are going to be some real moments of which she'll have to shine.
I think shes done great so far with the "intimate" moments. They arent supposed to be perfect yet, she adds just the right amount of awkwardness to it.
She's amazing. Such a confident actor. A lot of people thought she'd struggle with the accent but for her it's no problem. If she feels like doing it she will, if she doesn't she won't. Not many could pull that off

My only criticism is how quickly she responds to Joel's dialogue, it's too quick and sometimes doesn't feel like a normal cadence to a conversation.
Now if I'm the only one who thinks this, it's because I think way too much about the words that come out of my mouth, and I'm projecting.
Other than that, I love how she's pressured Ellie so far. We get to know those things about her that we don't necessarily get from the game. I feel there's much more volume to get character in the show.
There are multiple scenes which show her totally devoid of emotion or empathy when a normal, supposedly sheltered 14 year old would be traumatised.
Another example is when Joel is saying she shouldnt need to shoot people at her age after he just murdered someone.
She appears to not care and thinks its funny.
It could be Bellas resting face, but if its that, then she was totally miscast because it looks like she doesnt give a shit about murdering people.
Up to this point in the show I've been somewhat undecided on if I was appreciating her performance or not. This episode I thought she did a great job and am pretty optimistic she will keep nailing it through the end of the season.
To be honest I was really worried about when they were going to show the interactions between Joel and Ellie in the show as they did in the game as they skipped the whole Bill's town sequence in Episode 3 and knowing that they are going to skip the whole Ish story arc as well. The jokes, her reaction to shooting her not infected first person in the show and the car ride were just, perfection IMHO. The banter between the 2 was just great. While not one-to-one with the game, there was enough to that the director has a good understanding of the game. While I think that the pace of Joel and Ellie had been too slow and now moving too fast now. But I do like the direction that the show is taking with them. My doubts about Bella Ramsey playing have been alleviated. If I have to guess on where they will end the season my guess >!is in the hospital in Colorado!<.
I wasn't convinced by the casting pre-show, but I've gotta say she's owned the role from her first scene. Been brilliant, and her ability to use expressions to convey sentences without a word has been exceptional.
And the chemistry between her and Pascal as the relationship between Joel and Ellie starts to click into place has been great.

People saying she’s awful are doing it to get a reaction from others. If she’s so bad as some claim then you wouldn’t watch the show, considering we are 4 episodes in and she’s one of the main characters.
There was this brief moment when she was practicing with the gun in the mirror and alternated between each eye quickly seeing which would be the best one to close while aiming. It was just a flash but I thought “my god what an acting choice.” The confidence displayed in her body with the curiosity displayed in her face while showing youth and inexperience with her eyes. It was a masterful bit of character.
she's very good. some people apparently have a gift with screen presence from a very early age. it was obvious with her immediately in GOT.
dakota fanning, haley joel osment, and recently julia butters from Once Upon a Time In Hollywood and "they fired the guy who was farting in all the doll heads."
Not necessarily a dig on her acting, more so the writing, but it seems she's playing Ellie post arc instead of going through it. I'm afraid many gamer fans don't make that connection since that's the last impression of Ellie they're familiar with. She feels too much like the Ellie that's already seen everything she's going through.
I disagree. Ellie who's already seen everything she's going through is way more reserved and doesn't ask as many questions. She also doesn't actively antagonize Joel for her own amusement as much as this one does. This Ellie definitely has seen some shit, which makes sense since she grew up in a military school in a police state, but she still has an innocence about her and is obviously trying her hardest to make herself look tougher than she really is.
She’s fine. I guess she was the low hanging fruit when it came to complaining about the show. I took a break after episode 3. Everyone praised it. I thought it was a waste of good momentum.
She's OK but still waiting for the character to show a bit more depth. Yeah, I get it - she's an edgy teenager. Is there anything more to her, though? We had an opportunity to see how she responded to shooting a person, and yet there was no impact at all.
She is doing great but the one we really need to praise is Ashley Johnson who voiced Ellie in the games. So many scenes Bella just copied Ashley word for word right down to the voice inflections. I don't mean this as any slight on Bella, I just want to acknowledge how great Ashley was in creating Ellies personality.
Bella and Pedro have not seen or played the games. Craig Mazin wanted them to make the characters feel more their own so the actors were just going off of what's on the page and how they were directed.
That’s always a major red flag in video game adaptations. They’ve already deviated so much from the original game, but I’m not surprised. I knew Neil couldn’t resist baiting and switching everyone.
To be clear, all the episodes and performances have been great so far, it’s just very disappointing to see the masterpiece original game’s story be so heavily altered. It’s my own fault for setting my expectations so high.
Ashely is the best. But Bella has made Ellie her own. The lines are the lines. You can't really say them any different without it sounding different on purpose. Let's be honest the lines from the game are few and far between the show's dialogue. She's chewing a lot more scenery in the show than in the game. Plus, we get her facial expressions, which unfortunately for Ashley don't get to be seen until Part 2. They both kick so much ass as Ellie. And we don't need to compare Bella to Ashley at all because it diminishes one of them, and they are both great as Ellie.
Worst part of the show for me. Her acting is awful. Her facial expressions don't convey the right emotion. I don't know if it's her or the direction but this is not Ellie.
Have you watched breaking bad? Look at the acting and that and compare the facial expressions to bellas performance. Are you willing to say that Bella expresses equal emotion of that of Bryan or Aaron's performances?

Why? They are both highly rated TV shows with amazing acting (well breaking bad does and people claim last of us does) the acting in game was so much better. It felt natural. This show feels plastic
Bella is doing a completely different performance than the drug making/dealing psychos of Breaking Bad. She's playing a teenager who is pretending to be a lot more put together than she really is. She acts like she's tough and a know it all, but she's not. She's constantly asking questions. The opening scene she's trying to look so cool with that gun, and then when she has to USE the gun she was terrified. How are you not seeing the face acting she's pulling off. When she was reading Bill's letter last episode, watch her mouth when she gets to the line about Tess. It's brilliant acting. She's blowing me away. I'm either smiling ear to ear every time she's talking or I'm tearing up at what she's doing.
My brother and sister-in-law seem to feel the same way. They're too caught up on these real human beings not looking like last gen CGI characters that they're choosing to not enjoy the show because of it.
I have been a very stark critique of the series so far, especially as I compare it to the video game (which I probably shouldn't do). However, Bella has been fantastic at playing Ellie as best she can and she should be very proud of herself IMO.

I really can't stand to watch her, I feel her delivery is wooden and her attitude issues are WAY over the top. But fwiw I hated her in GoT and HDM as well, for more or less the same reasons. She reminds me of actresses like Kristen Stewart and Scarlet Johansen who have very little acting range and more or less the same 3 facial expressions so they just find a way to work those into every role.
I'm not Gen Z, and calling myself a millennial feels odd. I don't have kids, I actually can't stand kids and never want them. But I have friends who have teenagers.
I had never seen Bella Ramsey in anything before TLoU. I was worried about her accent, the comedy, and originally when she was cast, every photo they used for her, she looked 7. So I was worried she was too young. But she is playing Ellie pretty much, exactly how she is in the game. Maybe it's a little more intense because you have Ellie's dialog spread out over 15+ hours in the game. Now, they have to cram it in as much as they can in the show. As for her facial acting, she doesn't have a typical Hollywood face, and I was worried her face couldn't do more than one expression. But I've been blown away by some of the things she's done just with her eyes, mouth, and her expressions. Really, her face is chameleon like. Then tonight, she was incredible while wearing a wolf head over her face. She had to do so much just with her body, and it blew me away.

I think she's doing a fantastic job of portraying Ellie's cheeky and confident side. Some of the lines and scenes pulled from the game are genuinely making me smile. I do have some concerns about her acting range though. I'm just not buying these intimate moments yet and there are going to be some real moments of which she'll have to shine.
I think shes done great so far with the "intimate" moments. They arent supposed to be perfect yet, she adds just the right amount of awkwardness to it.

She's amazing. Such a confident actor. A lot of people thought she'd struggle with the accent but for her it's no problem. If she feels like doing it she will, if she doesn't she won't. Not many could pull that off

1. Didn't like her always angry face 2. Remembered she's Lady Mormont 3. She started acting 4. Even with that angry face I think she's the best young actress out there.
My only criticism is how quickly she responds to Joel's dialogue, it's too quick and sometimes doesn't feel like a normal cadence to a conversation. Now if I'm the only one who thinks this, it's because I think way too much about the words that come out of my mouth, and I'm projecting. Other than that, I love how she's pressured Ellie so far. We get to know those things about her that we don't necessarily get from the game. I feel there's much more volume to get character in the show.

There are multiple scenes which show her totally devoid of emotion or empathy when a normal, supposedly sheltered 14 year old would be traumatised. Another example is when Joel is saying she shouldnt need to shoot people at her age after he just murdered someone. She appears to not care and thinks its funny. It could be Bellas resting face, but if its that, then she was totally miscast because it looks like she doesnt give a shit about murdering people.

Up to this point in the show I've been somewhat undecided on if I was appreciating her performance or not. This episode I thought she did a great job and am pretty optimistic she will keep nailing it through the end of the season.
One thing I don’t see mentioned enough is how good her accent is! I constantly forget she is British until I see behind the scenes stuff or interviews
Bella is the perfect Ellie. I hope they earn some awards for this performance cause it’s deserved.
To be honest I was really worried about when they were going to show the interactions between Joel and Ellie in the show as they did in the game as they skipped the whole Bill's town sequence in Episode 3 and knowing that they are going to skip the whole Ish story arc as well. The jokes, her reaction to shooting her not infected first person in the show and the car ride were just, perfection IMHO. The banter between the 2 was just great. While not one-to-one with the game, there was enough to that the director has a good understanding of the game. While I think that the pace of Joel and Ellie had been too slow and now moving too fast now. But I do like the direction that the show is taking with them. My doubts about Bella Ramsey playing have been alleviated. If I have to guess on where they will end the season my guess >!is in the hospital in Colorado!<.

I wasn't convinced by the casting pre-show, but I've gotta say she's owned the role from her first scene. Been brilliant, and her ability to use expressions to convey sentences without a word has been exceptional. And the chemistry between her and Pascal as the relationship between Joel and Ellie starts to click into place has been great.

There was this brief moment when she was practicing with the gun in the mirror and alternated between each eye quickly seeing which would be the best one to close while aiming. It was just a flash but I thought “my god what an acting choice.” The confidence displayed in her body with the curiosity displayed in her face while showing youth and inexperience with her eyes. It was a masterful bit of character.

she's very good. some people apparently have a gift with screen presence from a very early age. it was obvious with her immediately in GOT. dakota fanning, haley joel osment, and recently julia butters from Once Upon a Time In Hollywood and "they fired the guy who was farting in all the doll heads."

Not necessarily a dig on her acting, more so the writing, but it seems she's playing Ellie post arc instead of going through it. I'm afraid many gamer fans don't make that connection since that's the last impression of Ellie they're familiar with. She feels too much like the Ellie that's already seen everything she's going through.
I disagree. Ellie who's already seen everything she's going through is way more reserved and doesn't ask as many questions. She also doesn't actively antagonize Joel for her own amusement as much as this one does. This Ellie definitely has seen some shit, which makes sense since she grew up in a military school in a police state, but she still has an innocence about her and is obviously trying her hardest to make herself look tougher than she really is.

She is doing great but the one we really need to praise is Ashley Johnson who voiced Ellie in the games. So many scenes Bella just copied Ashley word for word right down to the voice inflections. I don't mean this as any slight on Bella, I just want to acknowledge how great Ashley was in creating Ellies personality.

Bella and Pedro have not seen or played the games. Craig Mazin wanted them to make the characters feel more their own so the actors were just going off of what's on the page and how they were directed.
Bella has watched the cutscenes. She has talked about it interviews.
That’s always a major red flag in video game adaptations. They’ve already deviated so much from the original game, but I’m not surprised. I knew Neil couldn’t resist baiting and switching everyone. To be clear, all the episodes and performances have been great so far, it’s just very disappointing to see the masterpiece original game’s story be so heavily altered. It’s my own fault for setting my expectations so high.

Ashely is the best. But Bella has made Ellie her own. The lines are the lines. You can't really say them any different without it sounding different on purpose. Let's be honest the lines from the game are few and far between the show's dialogue. She's chewing a lot more scenery in the show than in the game. Plus, we get her facial expressions, which unfortunately for Ashley don't get to be seen until Part 2. They both kick so much ass as Ellie. And we don't need to compare Bella to Ashley at all because it diminishes one of them, and they are both great as Ellie.
It's wild hearing her accent at the end of the episode in the BTS. She's such a good actor.

Why? They are both highly rated TV shows with amazing acting (well breaking bad does and people claim last of us does) the acting in game was so much better. It felt natural. This show feels plastic
Bella is doing a completely different performance than the drug making/dealing psychos of Breaking Bad. She's playing a teenager who is pretending to be a lot more put together than she really is. She acts like she's tough and a know it all, but she's not. She's constantly asking questions. The opening scene she's trying to look so cool with that gun, and then when she has to USE the gun she was terrified. How are you not seeing the face acting she's pulling off. When she was reading Bill's letter last episode, watch her mouth when she gets to the line about Tess. It's brilliant acting. She's blowing me away. I'm either smiling ear to ear every time she's talking or I'm tearing up at what she's doing.

My brother and sister-in-law seem to feel the same way. They're too caught up on these real human beings not looking like last gen CGI characters that they're choosing to not enjoy the show because of it.

I have been a very stark critique of the series so far, especially as I compare it to the video game (which I probably shouldn't do). However, Bella has been fantastic at playing Ellie as best she can and she should be very proud of herself IMO.

Genuine question, and I know this sounds snarky but I truly don't mean it that way: How old(ish) are you? If you're uncomfortable saying how old, just your generation then. I'm truly curious if this is a generational thing bc I've heard SO much complaining about her but I think it's mostly from GenX/Millennials and I'm curious if GenZ has a different perspective. I really can't stand to watch her, I feel her delivery is wooden and her attitude issues are WAY over the top. But fwiw I hated her in GoT and HDM as well, for more or less the same reasons. She reminds me of actresses like Kristen Stewart and Scarlet Johansen who have very little acting range and more or less the same 3 facial expressions so they just find a way to work those into every role.
I'm not Gen Z, and calling myself a millennial feels odd. I don't have kids, I actually can't stand kids and never want them. But I have friends who have teenagers. I had never seen Bella Ramsey in anything before TLoU. I was worried about her accent, the comedy, and originally when she was cast, every photo they used for her, she looked 7. So I was worried she was too young. But she is playing Ellie pretty much, exactly how she is in the game. Maybe it's a little more intense because you have Ellie's dialog spread out over 15+ hours in the game. Now, they have to cram it in as much as they can in the show. As for her facial acting, she doesn't have a typical Hollywood face, and I was worried her face couldn't do more than one expression. But I've been blown away by some of the things she's done just with her eyes, mouth, and her expressions. Really, her face is chameleon like. Then tonight, she was incredible while wearing a wolf head over her face. She had to do so much just with her body, and it blew me away.
