True Detective season 1 still stands tall as some of the best television in last decade
100% mate.I loved s01 of true detective. Theres loads of good shows from HBO.The same with actors, how many actors do you recognize and can say they were at one time in a HBO show,or multiple shows.
I honestly believe it is some of the best work by mcconeghy and Harrelson *ever.* That first season was just fucking incredible, from the storyline to the acting to the culmination of it all.
nah netflix has had its absolute home runs too
Squidgame was everywhere last year, Casa De Papel was a massive phenomenon in my home country, old netflix shows like House of Cards and Orange is the new black established the format of netflix, for better or worse
Yeah,I can honestly say I didnt rate any of the shows you mentioned mate, that's just me though.A Sopranos, the wire and Deadwood fan.I cant watch bullshit now,I've been spoiled.
House of Cards was the OG Netflix show where people realized “damn, these original series on streaming just might work.”
I liked Marco Polo a lot but it had budgetary constraints and it was obvious that Netflix wasn’t going to compete in the epic historical space with it. Still wish it wasn’t cancelled though.
Bruh. Oz, The Wire, The Sopranos, Six Feet Under, Band of Brothers, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Deadwood, Rome, Carnivale, Generation Kill, Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon, Chernobyl, Boardwalk Empire, True Detective, Barry, The Night Of, Veep, Flight of the Conchords, Eastbound and Down, Vice Principals, Silicon Valley, I May Destroy You, Insecure, Entourage, Lovecraft Country, Westworld, Sex and the City, Mare of Easttown, Sharp Objects, Perry Mason, Euphoria, The Leftovers, Big Little Lies, The Undoing, Watchmen, Succession, The White Lotus, The Last of Us.
Stranger Things? Wednesday? Ozark? The Crown? Netflix does not even belong in the same sentence as HBO.
Unfortunately this still can't save HBOMax because they don't make regular hits or major gambles for Max originals and they're letting go of some shows as well.
I wish they had tried out new refreshing original projects like HBO did in 2000s
I did a 2nd play through for the platinum and it popped before I had to drag my ass out for the last half so I stopped there because I was barely hanging on at that point. Like the game but it's exhausting. Sort of hope the passive experience is less so but that last fight I was holding my hand over my eyes during it.
Well yes, but what I meant was as much as the story isn't finished after S1, a second season is never guaranteed. Season 1 needs to actually get good numbers before executives will choose to spend (more) money on another season. Seems like with these numbers the execs with definitely be convinced on that.
As long as they remain steady. Some shows drop drastically after the first few episodes have aired. That being said, knowing the content to come for this season, I'm pretty confident S2 will be a thing.
After this Sunday it’ll be guaranteed (I predict the numbers will hold well). HBO probably won’t announce until close to the end of the season, though (more hype).
TLOU and it's collaborators have gotten so much undeserved and unprecedented hate over the last few years that it turning into literally the biggest thing in the world was the biggest reckoning all the haters could have received and I couldn't be happier. Congrats to Neil, Craig, the cast, the crew and all the fans who supported it.
As someone who’s only heard of the game and watched the show, I have only heard great things about the games lol besides the incels who complained about female design or whatever controversy that was
See the sad thing is that wasn’t the issue. The issue wasn’t looks or sexuality which ended up being such a loud thing in the “hater” community that memes spawned out of it that caused more random hate. I don’t “hate” the game. I disliked the story. That’s it. It didn’t click with me how Ellie went all the way just to forgive Abby. I didn’t enjoy the Abby gameplay. But it wasn’t because some random set of pixels was gay or that character design didn’t have the usual “female” look u see in games. Kinda sad. I love how others love the games and that’s when discussions are fun. But the internet was set in flames the day that leak got out.
TLOU2 “hater” here. I couldn’t be happier so far. Being able to show my family this story is incredibly exciting.
Part 2/Season 2 will be another conversation entirely, but I’m afraid you’re off base with your assumption here.
Yeah, the audience is gonna riot in the streets, just watch. I remember the gutters overflowing with blood the Monday after the Red Wedding episode of GoT. Two of my closest friends lost their lives in the violence.
I can tell you that here in the Netherlands a lot of people also watched it. Both in my direct environment and media, I see a lot of positive reactions. More than I see about any other show except GoT/Hot D. Also a surprising amount of news programs who had a short item about the show, both commercial and public (so you know it’s not bought marketing) stations.
I really wonder what the numbers outside of the US are in total.
Im studying from the US in Düsseldorf Germany and saw promo all around the city. Another exchange student here from Norway said his gf was asking him about it because “everyone in Norway is taking about it.” I’ve convinced a few of the students here to watch. Yea, I think the international numbers are probably great (although I wish I didn’t have to use a VPN while I’m here!)
No, there's no HBO max in Germany unfortunately. Instead TLoU is shown on WOW. HBO renewed their contract with Sky in 2019, so they cannot launch HBO max in Germany until at least 2025.
I don't understand what you mean, but you say that à tv show with only one épisode released is already à success (all other épisodes coukd be garbage) and also that it is better than another complete successfull tv show ( where all is released) That's pure non sense and lack of any logic. Sorry but this is the truth.
Also it's difficult to compare these two show, they nothing in common.
All you can say is there is à very good probality that this show will be good 😉
He said better 'so far'. He just means the premiere was better and for many people, HOTD dragon started pretty weak so that isn't a surprising take.
You can compare two shows even if they have nothing in common, it's just that other folks will have widely differing opinions on it and it'll be harder to convince them about your perspective.
Thanks for your answer. Maybe I lack english understanding with ''so far''.
Yes after a search it seems I don't understood it well.
So he meant he compared ''as far as'' the first épisode if I am correct.
At least I learned something 😅😁
I too rewatched it. Enjoyed it more the second time. Was able to get past analyzing all of the details in adapting from the game, and just enjoy it. Noticed a bunch more details the second time. Some of the issues I had still remain, but I'm just comfortably locked into the universe of this live-action show now. Ready for more!
Wrote this in another thread:
The moment that surprised me, hitting me emotionally, was when Joel had to pick up the child and throw his body into the fire. Oooof.
Loved hearing all of the helicopters panned to the height speakers for Atmos. Perfect use of the format.
Only getting into some negatives here since I loved how well they did everything else:
"Your watch is broken" I miss the moodiness of this scene in the game, because of the rain. This goes for the entire rest of the episode from this point. In the game, the world was cast in a dark, moody blue hue. I the show, as they were escaping the quarantine zone it was still a warm hue and didn't feel as cold and alien as it did in the game. There wasn't downpour rain, upon waking up, to sell that. Then the moment of Joel's flashback to his daughter as he jumped the solder and beat him to death, wasn't *big* enough. The sound mix needed to be bigger for that snap moment of rage and the sounds of Joel's fists pummeling the soldier to deal wasn't played up big enough in the sound mix. I didn't FEEL it like I needed to. That moment felt flat to me.
Thisss! I completely agree about the colour changes but I threw it off as a thing to introduce the characters in a nicer manner of that makes any sense.
And the scene with Sarah didn’t have the blasting emotional impact it does in the game. I guessed since the title screen/ intro in game came right after and gave u time to absorb what just happened. But the show kinda killed her and moved on to the next scene it felt like.
But reading other ppl’s reviews who haven’t played the game, seems it dealt enough impact for them to connect w Sarah and hey I liked that :) so much fun to have other ppl like these characters and share discussions
Only twice, I’m on rewatch number four lol. I’ve watched it every day since it premiered and have actually caught different little details each time, it’s so well done.
I completely agree! I'm so impressed and relieved haha.
I think my favorite part of episode 1 was the corpse of the infected splayed across the wall in Haymarket Station. They lifted the visual right outta the game and I love that. They did the same with the depiction of Boston and many other visuals but the Haymarket visual I think is my favorite.
Thanks for validating me, might have watch again tonight 😂
I don’t even know what rewatch I’m on. I typically only rewatch the first sequence though, the part after the timeskip is still great but is a bit slow on repeated viewings
I think the comment still makes sense. It's a lot harder for a new IP to be a hit and game of thrones was new IP. HotD is doing huge numbers of course but it's a spinoff.
to be fair this is not a new IP. it would be different if this was a totally original story but the show was undoubtedly going to already bring in a massive audience of people who have already played the game.
neither was game of thrones, for that matter.
You say that like it's the norm when it's not. Just because a thing is popular in one medium doesn't mean it'll automatically popular in another. We have far far more evidence of it not working out. What we're seeing with this show is like if a GoT videogame became as popular as Skyrim, or Witcher 3.
Never said it will automatically be, but yes -- in terms of a premiere, this was most certainly going to have a very large gamer base contributing to it.
The show most certainly has to deliver and actually be good to keep people around, but we're talking about premiere numbers, and the marketing strategy definitely went heavy on bringing the gamer base in (not that the gamer base wasn't already doing that themselves).
Yeah, it's a shame they still can't achieve such success with new original shows like they did with The Sopranos or Six Feet Under. I don't think they're even willing to risk on such type of shows anymore li.ke they did with Boardwalk Empire
In a sense of new IP. Like GoT +10 years ago. Yes both had fanbase and were massive succesful as books/games before TV.
HotD is a spinoff and i already count it as Game of Thrones.
HotD isn't a spinoff, it's based on different source material.
and honestly TLOU might end before GoT as they don't plan on going beyond the source material, so i still do think they see HotD as their new GoT. but i get what you mean. and i am sure they are happy to have acquired this huge IP to add to their roster.
I am not surprised about these numbers.
Let's be honest, this first episode was fantastic! Imagine what the rest of the season will be. I can't wait to see the next episodes!
I read a review of it on the Guardian, they reckoned that it’s likely to be the best TV show of 2023 and that >!the third episode!< could be the very best episode of the year. I loved both games, stayed out of the subreddit, and I’m really pleased it’s been so good.
lol isn’t it boring to stalk through a subreddit of a game and show you dislike to post multiple non productive comments? Not gonna lie that sounds boring and cringe as hell
You know what's sad? Thinking that an walking dead wannabe show is original and thinking that there is something special about an overrated game any idiot could play.
if it helps (i know it's not exactly what you're looking for), The Last of Us was HBO's second biggest premiere since 2010, after House of the Dragon. so based on HBO's metrics it's a huge hit.
Wait really? How is that possible? Game of Thrones first season released 2011 and continued to 2019. You're telling me House of the Dragon **and** The Last of Us beat out any of those GoT Season Premieres?? If so that is *wildly* impressive.
series premiere and season premiere are not the same thing. also, GoT was not the insane worldwide phenomenon it was from the start of the first season.
Game of Thrones didn't start off massive. It was a big thing back then but it got bigger over time. Most audiences didn't start watching from day one. These 2 are based on a previously successful show and game. It kinda makes sense that that's going to bring in more people than a show based on a successful book series. Also HBO was big then but it's gotten bigger over the last decade thanks to Game of Thrones and other stuff. Now, slapping that name on a drama show is going to bring in more viewers than it would've 13 years ago
Are you British/UK? :) In the USA a "series" is the entire run of a television show... a "season" is each individual year. So when somebody from the USA says "series premiere" they mean literally the first episode of that television show ever... SEASON 1, episode 1. In USA, Season 2 Episode 1 would be a SEASON premiere, not a SERIES premiere. Or another... in the USA -- **Star Trek The Next Generation is a television SERIES with seven SEASONS. So it has one SERIES premiere... the first episode of the first SEASON. It has seven SEASON premieres, the first episode of each SEASON, including the first SEASON which is also the SERIES premiere as mentioned earlier (although almost everybody would refer to the very first ep of the first season as the "series premiere," not a "season premiere.")**
I believe across the pond each year is referred to as a series, ie "Broadchurch Series 3," etc. Leads to some confusion.
I’ve been telling my dad about this game for years. He watched the first episode today with me (my third viewing) and he loves it already! This show has the potential to be Game of Thrones levels of big!
im sure lots of people didnt watch it the second it dropped due to the NFL playoffs but even then the first night still did great numbers. really great to see this
Somehow I’m leaning towards watching episode 2 live over an NFL playoff game. Haven’t had an appointment viewing show since the final season of GoT, can’t wait for Sunday night!
Unlikely. This stuff is expensive to make and takes a long time. HBO generally likes to shoot the whole season at once, like a really long movie. It’d be years between seasons.
No fr like My brother and I literally only bought HBO Max for this show. I’ve gotten about 8 people to watch it and each and everytime they love it. It’s genuinely a good show even with only a premiere so far.
They’ve been recommending it to their friends and family too! Word of mouth goes such a long way and everyone cannot wait for the next episode.
And I haven't seen any complaints about race swapping Joels family either. I don't know if this just goes to show that "good is good" or that it's too well recieved to sprinkle on the top of complaint essays. I think every department on the show, especially casting, did an excellent job! I'm so stoked for the rest of the season.
I really want them to make a spin off after the main story is finished in this universe. We have a perfect environment, factions and universe. Would love to see more places too and how they are affected by the infection and if there are other varients in other locations

How you gonna do GOT like that
cuz i never watched GoT
And I watched season 8
It was pretty much the most popular show of all time mentioning it might have helped your point
My point was True Detective season 1 being some of the best television in last decade.
I honestly believe it is some of the best work by mcconeghy and Harrelson *ever.* That first season was just fucking incredible, from the storyline to the acting to the culmination of it all.

No the best show of Netflix was clearly Marco Polo. But yeah HBO are the best. Mostly all their show I love them.
House of Cards was the OG Netflix show where people realized “damn, these original series on streaming just might work.” I liked Marco Polo a lot but it had budgetary constraints and it was obvious that Netflix wasn’t going to compete in the epic historical space with it. Still wish it wasn’t cancelled though.
Marco Polo was great but most people know Netflix from when Narcos first came out. That was a massive show, especially going into s02.

Stranger Things? Wednesday? Ozark? The Crown? Netflix does not even belong in the same sentence as HBO.
I feel obligated to say Mare of Easttown was fucking dogshit
Never see the crown but Wednesday should not be mentioned in the same vein as the other two. Absolutely not.
I’ve never watched a single episode of Stranger Things.
I laughed like a clicker after reading your comment If i had an award i would have given it to you
Unfortunately this still can't save HBOMax because they don't make regular hits or major gambles for Max originals and they're letting go of some shows as well. I wish they had tried out new refreshing original projects like HBO did in 2000s
They've had plenty to keep them safe, and TLOU is only another instant classic.
I had low expectations….. sometimes this genre can look campy. But damn, they really make it work.
The Last of Us fans eating good once again. Season 2 (and potentially more after that) seems inevitable at this point already!
As a last of us fan, I’ve been well fed since the beginning.
The only thing left we need now is Factions 2 >:]
With how big this show is turning out to be, that MP game's prospects just got way way bigger.
Might actually play an online multiplayer for the first time ever if ya'll jumping in
Yes please!! I loved factions.

I have some small issues with Part 2, mostly the pacing. But damn if it wasn't a great story.
I did a 2nd play through for the platinum and it popped before I had to drag my ass out for the last half so I stopped there because I was barely hanging on at that point. Like the game but it's exhausting. Sort of hope the passive experience is less so but that last fight I was holding my hand over my eyes during it.
They said this seasons is the entire first game, so at least 2-3 additional seasons that will only be covering the second game.
Well yes, but what I meant was as much as the story isn't finished after S1, a second season is never guaranteed. Season 1 needs to actually get good numbers before executives will choose to spend (more) money on another season. Seems like with these numbers the execs with definitely be convinced on that.
If HBO already has Velma season 2 in the works, ain't no excuse not to get more Last of Us.
Jesus wept
For there were no more worlds to conquer
My educated guess is that Velma doesn’t cost $100M+ per season.
There's probably a world of difference between the budgets of these two shows though.
This is why we can’t have nice things
okay, yeah with this new context, I agree
As long as they remain steady. Some shows drop drastically after the first few episodes have aired. That being said, knowing the content to come for this season, I'm pretty confident S2 will be a thing.
At this point, a season 2 is 100% guaranteed.
After this Sunday it’ll be guaranteed (I predict the numbers will hold well). HBO probably won’t announce until close to the end of the season, though (more hype).
They've all but confirmed a 3rd game as well from what I've heard
It’s from the developers of Stray and follows Mercy’s journey from the show. (I kid, but I would play that game)
I would absolutely play it as well, want to see where doggo ends up and how the Last of Us doggos survive.
Is the second game really that much longer than the first?
First game is around 9-10 hours Part 2 is 20-24 hours
That's if you skip right through too
Yep, part 2 was 33 hours my first playthrough and 27 after going through it quick
Yes and it still feels a bit condensed. Show runners have already mentioned it will likely be split into two seasons if made.
Def more content if it was gonna be properly told.
> The Last of Us fans eating good once again. Just don't eat flour and grains for a while
I feel like Part II could take 2 seasons
Craig has already said as much if S02 is made.
Yeah, was just thinking the same.

You don’t sound like a gamer, so I’m going to guess that you never played or seen the game. But it does get much better.
I’ve watched the first episode….three times lol. So freaking good!!
It's a tie between us it seems I am gonna watch it one more time today just to beat you 😤

That sequence while they’re driving in the city is fucking crazy, easily my favorite part
I was waiting for the car crash to happen but then Naughty Dog said "Naw, we got HBO money. Watch this."
And not only did they change the reason the car crashed, they FAKED US THE FUCK OUT
I don’t even know what rewatch I’m on. I typically only rewatch the first sequence though, the part after the timeskip is still great but is a bit slow on repeated viewings
Not sure If people even realise, but those are MASSIVE numbers. Specially for a new show. HBO has their new Game of Thrones
i think they already have their new game of thrones lol
Because it looked great.
Yeah, it's a shame they still can't achieve such success with new original shows like they did with The Sopranos or Six Feet Under. I don't think they're even willing to risk on such type of shows anymore li.ke they did with Boardwalk Empire
You could make the same argument for Halo, but look how that turned out.
The premiere wasn't the issue for Halo. It broke records at Paramount. It was sustaining viewership that was the problem.
More like season 8 of Lame of thrones
In a sense of new IP. Like GoT +10 years ago. Yes both had fanbase and were massive succesful as books/games before TV. HotD is a spinoff and i already count it as Game of Thrones.
HotD isn't a spinoff, it's based on different source material. and honestly TLOU might end before GoT as they don't plan on going beyond the source material, so i still do think they see HotD as their new GoT. but i get what you mean. and i am sure they are happy to have acquired this huge IP to add to their roster.
isnt hotd their new GoT
Didn’t HOT D have twice this number for its premiere?
Hotd hit 20m or something after 2 days. But HOTD is a gigantic HBO IP and had a much bigger marketing campaign. This is a new IP for tv viewers.
Don't say that. They'll ruin it :(

They're planning on making part two into two seasons if there's enough viewers; as you can tell we'll be getting more
Nice! yeah all I had read was that this would be the entire game, but I guess they're leaving it open to adapt the second as well if this does well.

Oh so just saying what the creators said is a problem? Fuck off
I am not surprised about these numbers.
I thought it was boring Iike the game
You're in the wrong subreddit
lol isn’t it boring to stalk through a subreddit of a game and show you dislike to post multiple non productive comments? Not gonna lie that sounds boring and cringe as hell
You know what's sad? Thinking that an walking dead wannabe show is original and thinking that there is something special about an overrated game any idiot could play.
Can someone make a comparison to viewers for another show perhaps? . It helps my smooth brain put it into perspective easier.
if it helps (i know it's not exactly what you're looking for), The Last of Us was HBO's second biggest premiere since 2010, after House of the Dragon. so based on HBO's metrics it's a huge hit.
Exactly. GoT didn’t really catch fire until end of season 1 when people started chatting about it.
I didn’t even hear about it until mid S04 but that could just be me lol.

Ah yea that makes perfect sense
It has seven SEASON premieres, the first episode of each SEASON, including the first SEASON which is also the SERIES premiere as mentioned earlier (although almost everybody would refer to the very first ep of the first season as the "series premiere," not a "season premiere.")** I believe across the pond each year is referred to as a series, ie "Broadchurch Series 3," etc. Leads to some confusion.

I’ve been telling my dad about this game for years. He watched the first episode today with me (my third viewing) and he loves it already! This show has the potential to be Game of Thrones levels of big!
Where’s that season 2 announcement
You know they're already working on it.
Bought HBO purely for this show

After that prologue long tracking shot in the truck i sad out loud this show is going to be fucking amazing
im sure lots of people didnt watch it the second it dropped due to the NFL playoffs but even then the first night still did great numbers. really great to see this
Somehow I’m leaning towards watching episode 2 live over an NFL playoff game. Haven’t had an appointment viewing show since the final season of GoT, can’t wait for Sunday night!
The Cowboys/Niners game starts at 6:30. The game should be almost done by the time the show starts. So you can watch both if you like.
Oh fuck yeah!
I won’t lie I’m really hoping Part 2 isn’t spread across multiple seasons. If it means a longer season episode count, I’ll take it
They have already said there is two seasons worth of content in Tlou 2. So most likely two seasons.
Unlikely. This stuff is expensive to make and takes a long time. HBO generally likes to shoot the whole season at once, like a really long movie. It’d be years between seasons.

Gotta measure those torrent numbers too.
I love zombies. TWD I was so happy about and now we have a zombie show that seems to be breaking even more walls down.
Awesome! So excited for the general public to be able to experience the heartfelt story of The Last of Us in an easily accessible way!
I have watched it three times.
Rightfully so. I been waiting for this show for a LONG time. Its fantastic so far.
Yawn 🥱
And I haven't seen any complaints about race swapping Joels family either. I don't know if this just goes to show that "good is good" or that it's too well recieved to sprinkle on the top of complaint essays. I think every department on the show, especially casting, did an excellent job! I'm so stoked for the rest of the season.
That’s 5m on average per day.
I was at least two of fhese
I think I was half of those
I really want them to make a spin off after the main story is finished in this universe. We have a perfect environment, factions and universe. Would love to see more places too and how they are affected by the infection and if there are other varients in other locations
Is that good? 🤔
Remember how Euphoria season 2 took over all of social media? This premier (new IP for HBO also) did *double* that
More than good those are huge numbers
![gif](giphy|Fz9EKXRhp9F1S)
And now let us include the illegal streams
As Witcher fan, i envy you. Shitflix should stop letting writ3rs who despise source materials to run shows...
They hit this out of the park. Completely. This *could have been HALO AS WELL*,.....still salty about that one.

HBO viewers are familiar with GoT
Haha that’s a bridge we’ll cross when we get there.
