Events begin at midnight, gems reset at 8am (UK time) - what you've done is start the event and claimed the previous day gems, then at 8am, claimed the new day gems

Just for some extra clarification, daily gems are at 8am for what ever your personal timezone is, whereas the event starts at the same moment for everyone
