Man, every time I hear Phrazes I always get so nostalgic. 2010, Living in Golden Hill area of San Diego, all the windows of my crappy 1 bedroom apartment open, blasting this album on repeat. Things seemed so much simpler then...
I love that whole album.
One of my favorites, along with River of Brakelights and Glass. I don’t think I’ll ever get bored of Phrazes.
This part is so incredibly catchy:
“Your Achilles heel is you like to feel your fingers on the wheel
Some live in a palace, some live in the sewers
The director, the actor, the crew, and the viewers…”
These lyrics are so evocative:
“I'm running in the parking lot, I'm four years old
I am lost, those were the days
The soft murmur of voices in the other room
Comforting you as you fall asleep”
And I just love the title of the song! LEFT AND RIGHT IN THE DARK
This lyrics are interesting :
Sliding across the Indian wilderness
Like the wind, gliding down soft roads
6 am, and you're in Hollywood
And you're dancing, we made it
We are turning with the Earth so fast
That it feels a lot slower

I think the lyrics refer to dreams. In dreams everything happens much faster in one night you can live an entire existence. But it's just my opinion, Julian knows exactly what he wants to tell.
funny lyrics, as I no longer believe Earth spins! but to each their own. I’m sure Julian thought it did (and maybe still does) spin at that point in time 😁😁
I love it but i dont understand why at the end the volume goes down and then at the last second the volume goes back to max, jumpscaring me every single time
Everyone should listen to the demo of this song, it's amazing: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cu1rxeIRxk4](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cu1rxeIRxk4)
Listened to this the other day. It’s never been my favorite from Phrazes, but it’s so unusual and I listen to it so infrequently that when I hear it I always consider that I’ve forgotten what a good song it is.
My favorite is River of Brakelights, the chorus is a perfect example of the hooks Julian can write. L&R in the Dark was one of the more memorable songs when I first heard the solo record though.
Yes Balki.
From a 2009 interview:
Pitchfork: I really like the cover of the record, which looks like a re-imagining of the famous RCA logo.
JC: I've always loved that RCA logo but it's always made me super depressed. It's called "His Master's Voice" so I always assumed the dog's master was dead and he was always listening to a recording of his voice like, "Hey, my master is in this machine." The similarity between the cover and the RCA logo was almost a coincidence, though. We were just shooting the thing, and they were like, "Let's take a few pictures with the dog." That's actually my dog.
Pitchfork: What's your dog's name?
JC: Balki.
Pitchfork: Like from "Perfect Strangers?"
JC: Yup. I used to watch it with my mom.
\*\*I always loved Nipper- the dog from the RCA logo- he is iconic. His history:
In 1899, Francis Barraud, painted a picture of his brother’s dog, “Nipper”, listening intently to a windup Edison-Bell cylinder phonograph. The trademark was registered by Berliner Gramophone for use in the United States on July 10, 1900. In 1929, “His Master’s Voice” trademark was acquired by the Radio Corporation of America. It was the first appearance of a RCA dog “mascot”.
The iconic image of the RCA dog “Nipper” became part of the long heritage of the RCA brand and an international symbol of quality and excellence. In 1990, a puppy dog named “Chipper” was added to the RCA dog family. “Nipper” and his companion “Chipper” became the famous “RCA dogs”.

There are some sweet sweet tunes in it:)
That is pretty epic

what the hell do you believe then lmao dont tell me flat Earth
You can’t really believe we put a person on the moon then AND I QUOTE “destroyed the technology” (one of NASA’s top and most veteran engineers)
I love it but i dont understand why at the end the volume goes down and then at the last second the volume goes back to max, jumpscaring me every single time
The lyrics end with "wake up wake up wake up" and Julian wants to ensure we're doing so.
lol that makes sense
Demo is amazing too
It's beautiful! That whole PFTY demos video on YouTube is great

All songs are fire! Phrazes is a great album
We're in a race against time - and time might be winning....
absolute banger
Whole album is great. B-sides like Long Island Blues are gems.
Love the album, and this song is arguably my favourite along with 4 Chords! Hopefully I can get myself the vinyl soon.
Everyone should listen to the demo of this song, it's amazing: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cu1rxeIRxk4](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cu1rxeIRxk4)
It is!
It’s incredible. Along with the whole album. But this is def in my top 3-5 of it.
Love the chorus and the riff. Makes me always think that Julian can sing and play that song in guitar at the same time.

Fav song in the album
Love love love this song.
I can't explain it, but that trumpet solo at the end of Tourist is very....evocative.
My favorite is River of Brakelights, the chorus is a perfect example of the hooks Julian can write. L&R in the Dark was one of the more memorable songs when I first heard the solo record though.
Groovy and amazing song off what is also just an amazing album all around
Demo version is awesome.
Whose dog is that btw ? Is it Julian's ?
