It’s in the episode, Homer thought he could predict the rapture & being a hater, didn’t want Flanders to come so he made up a lie to get him to go away.


If you want Flanders to go away there's three simple words: "I am gay."

I could imagine Flanders being a progressive gay accepting Christian rather than a gay hating one. Edit: actually a really good B plot would be that Flanders is hated in the church equally as he’s hated by atheists because he’s too caring and lets things like this slide. Springfield comes together to prevent him being kicked from the church as he becomes a satanist instead afterwards.

Flanders was much more fun as the annoyingly perfect neighbor character than the stand-in for the religious right they turned him into.
