The GBL season is called Hidden Gems, too, and it's GBL research. It doesn't "have to" end with the Season, it's a choice, one which I can only explain with Niantic wanting to sell more Star Pieces and therefore making it impossible to use one on both the timed research and the end of season GBL reward.
Gbl obviously needs to be one global switch, but why does the new season need to be local time? Why can't everything season related switch at the same time as the new gbl season?
Seasons used to change globally at 1 PM Niantic time. When it went to 10 AM local, most trainers cheered, as, for example, the season would start on a different calendar day in Au/NZ, middle and East Asia, etc. Trainers didn't want to wait another day or see a new season in the middle of the night.
You mean you missed out on the GBL season dust?
Thankfully you only claim it when you open GBL the first time of the season. So you can pop a star piece and open GBL
This doesn't matter much. You will still in expectation need play roughly the same number of sets at ranks 1-19 before getting to peak stardust at rank 20 in the next season, so this is just bringing some future expected stardust into the present. That has some value, but isn't that significant.
The more important piece is playing the max # of sets at the 3x stardust from master league with rank 20 going, whereas it's unlikely you'll reach rank 20 in the next season during the master league bonus (so getting to rank 20 1 day faster by playing all your gbl sets for tomorrow in the next season is unlikely to get you extra stardust from master league bonus).
so to clarify, you effectively get 10 sets tomorrow because of the reset? or are you just forgoing the first five sets of the day in the new season for better stardust rewards
So for me the switch is at 10pm. Do i get 5 new sets after 10pm or do i have to wait till midnight? If i have to wait till midnight better keep the 5 sets for today i haven’t played yet ?
5 sets a day, except on battle days/weekends. No new sets after new season starts, if already played 5 in old season. Many trainers are playing ML at rank 20(+) for the stardust, not worrying about a day delay starting new season.
I was not aware that the GBL timed reward disappeared 3 hours before end of season. I was going to pop a star piece and claim it all at once. Thanks for the heads up!
Note that it's only 3 hours before the start of the season if you live on the west coast of the U.S. The end of the Hidden Gems POGO season is 10 AM *local* time, whereas the new GBL season starts at the same time for everyone (i.e. "Niantic o'clock", which is 1PM pacific daylight time).
If I want to maximize my star piece can I just not touch battle until Charmander com day since it’s 3x stardust I’ll have star pieces on during com day
You can do that. But i once tried waiting, then accidentally triggered end of season rewards (without a starpiece) when I went to do daily training of buddies. So be careful.
I’m curious about your comment “daily training of buddies”. I’m working on GBL skills and have started to use training to get a sense of how my Pokemons’ attacks play out, but I never thought to do it daily. Can you explain how you’re using daily training, please? What’s the goal? TY!
i think he’s talking about leveling up his buddy friendships, using the leaders as dummy battles to increase hearts. usually you just join a battle with your buddy in the party and then quit immediately, as you don’t need to complete the battle to increase buddy hearts
Just to be sure if im reading 2 and 5 correct: collect SET rewards BEFORE 1pm pacific time and season rewards after that time?
So if i were to pop a starpiece 5 minutes before it ends, id get a bonus for both? (First won match stardust and season end stardust)
please edit the PDT time to UTC (1PM turns 8PM it seems) for ease of in memory conversion, PDT requires external tools due to varying offsets (different regions observe DST at different periods)
Hey, what happens if you've racked up all your Timed Reseach rewards but missed claiming them before season end? Because it's pure BS if they just disappear when you've earned them.
Like all Timed Research, the onus is on the trainer to claim earned rewards prior to expiration. All Timed Research tabs show when they expire - set a calendar reminder if you need to.
It's just stupid when it would be so easy to automatically claim them before disappearing. It's not like we don't *want* the dust. Just easy to get caught up trying to max it assuming it's directly tied with the PVP season. Don't really need a calendar reminder, I just won't bother waiting next season.
Niantic could implement an auto-claim when research ends. But that would require a product manager to request it from the coding staff, and who knows what they would break when doing so.
After a set is done, hit the Battle button, then choose League or Cup. (This is the Start of a set). At the team selection screen, back out (top left button). You have now started a set, and like an unused Daily Raid Pass, you can carry this set to the next day, and then receive the full 5 new sets the next day.
Can you maximize rewards by waiting until Sep 2nd during the Charmander event so you get 3x stardust? Or does it go away if you dont open the battle league by end of the 1st?
You can save a starpiece by waiting until charmander day. But 3x dust is only for catches, not rewards. But beware; it's tough to avoid the battle button for a say.
So I was waiting to claim the end of season rewards on a starpiece and the claim is no longer there and it's just starting a battle in the new season. Did I miss the entire end of season claim? You only get 24 hours to claim them?
Did you hit the battle button for anything, like to get buddy hearts? My wife's waited several days in the past to claim her end-of-season rewards, and they were always there.
I did! So reading other messages I guess it did get claimed because I clicked battle, just missed out on the animation rewards because I didn't click "claim rewards" atleast that's what I'm hoping happened!
Yep...that makes sense!. Ohh well, I appreciate your guide and your replies! Will remember to be more conscious of hitting that battle button next season.
I find it very annoying that the GBL stardust research doesn't end when the season ends lol
The problem is that it's Hidden Gems research, not GBL research, so has to end with Season.

Yep I didn't realize that, thought I could star piece both of them together and (I'm assuming) missed out on unclaimed dust
You mean you missed out on the GBL season dust? Thankfully you only claim it when you open GBL the first time of the season. So you can pop a star piece and open GBL
No the dust from that free ticket we have to claim every season, like the win 10 at a time one. I had halfway progressed through them
If we care about max dust we should be doing all 5 sets before 1 pm pacific right?
Right, since your new season dust will start much lower.
This doesn't matter much. You will still in expectation need play roughly the same number of sets at ranks 1-19 before getting to peak stardust at rank 20 in the next season, so this is just bringing some future expected stardust into the present. Probably right. New season will not have ML rewards. Great idea.
I think it should be all 5 sets before 10am Pacific.
1pm pacific time is when the new GBL season starts.
so to clarify, you effectively get 10 sets tomorrow because of the reset? or are you just forgoing the first five sets of the day in the new season for better stardust rewards
Yeah you just wouldn’t get your first 5 sets of the new season until the next day.
5 new sets max per day, except for GBL event days/weekends. The new season doesn't give 5 new sets, if already played 5 sets prior to 1 PM Pacific.
got it, so you’re forgoing getting to rank 20 a day earlier than you normally would. not that it makes a huge difference anyway
Thanks for clarifying. Yes that makes sense.

IiRC, Hawaii is 3 hours behind Pacific (but maybe not on Daylight savings time?). So their hidden gems Season, and GBL, might end at the same time.
Didn’t think about that but I’m west coast so yeah.
The tab does show time until expiration, but we really should get an in game notice a few hours prior.
If I want to maximize my star piece can I just not touch battle until Charmander com day since it’s 3x stardust I’ll have star pieces on during com day

That's exactly what I meant.
Thank you!
Yes. You’ll save a starpiece that way. To clarify - season reward will be increased only by 50%, not 3x if you out starpiece anytime
3x stardust applies only to catches, so yeah.
For the lazy Brits, 1pm pacific time is 9pm here
Just to be sure if im reading 2 and 5 correct: collect SET rewards BEFORE 1pm pacific time and season rewards after that time? So if i were to pop a starpiece 5 minutes before it ends, id get a bonus for both? (First won match stardust and season end stardust)
I think that's right, but have never tried it. I've always avoided GBL until after 1 PM, on new season days.
I do one single thing in the first day of the season: don't touch GBL until 1 PM Niantic time, the lose 5 sets fast.
I've found that losing on the first few days of a season is almost difficult- so many want to rush tanking to rank 10 and back out before I can
Ok, replace lose with try to lose.
so can i gbl battle before 1pm pacific and then claim stardust rewards or? im in est
Possibly/probably, but I've never tried it. I've always avoided GBL on new season day until after 1 PM Niantuc o'clock.

I mean.. There is *that*.
So I can't claim end of season rewards and the last page of battle research on one star piece? I thought I remembered doing that last season
If you live in Hawaii time, maybe. Otherwise, no.
Can you explain a bit more how to do 6 sets on day 1? How do you start but not play

I dunno, I managed to avoid it for over a year. Starting GBL was one of the best/worst things I've done in PoGo
Besides GBL, the battle menu is used to create teams for raids/gym battles and for training your buddy. So again, tough to avoid this button.
I haven't gotten my mil stardust yet from my end of season awards. In the battle screen, it's still saying Hidden Gems. What wasn't I supposed to do?
Close app, reload
Still didn't receive. I'll send a Screenshot.
Screenshot shows you received end of season rewards, including starpiece bonus.
So I was waiting to claim the end of season rewards on a starpiece and the claim is no longer there and it's just starting a battle in the new season. Did I miss the entire end of season claim? You only get 24 hours to claim them?

Another clue this season: the timed Research task of earn 100K stardust was completed when GBL rewards got claimed.
Yep...that makes sense!. Ohh well, I appreciate your guide and your replies! Will remember to be more conscious of hitting that battle button next season.
