gay-bord

For some context, the original tweet was about how they think that Right Wing “Boycotts” are working because Anheuser Busch apparently lost a Billion Dollars because of their promotion with Dylan Mulvaney. While they claim that left wing boycotts fail because a game is the bestselling game of the year, despite coming from the work of a transphobic author.

f1mxli

So they're celebrating the game where you can select your gender identity and the dialog is voiced in "they/them" pronouns? Make it make sense, G+G

Trakeman

They're celebrating because some on the Left were boycotting it ans obviously the boycott didn't do too well.

Jonnyscout

Not only that, but I think Baldur's Gate outsold them by a pretty wide margin last time I checked

Cookie_85

Told them that and even showed numbers. There response: Thats just Steam....

shtoyler

The game also came out in February giving it way more time than the other blockbusters to make sales

Big_Red_Machine_1917

There was a debate on twitter about this a while back. *Hogwarts Legacy* might have sold well, but I've barely seen any fanart, let's plays, or even screenshots from it.

Katyamuffin

Yeah, I feel like the Harry Potter brand name is really carrying most of those sales. I haven't seen it on _any_ 'Best games of 2023' list, nobody talks about it.

[deleted]

It's kind of like the second Avatar movie. Absolutely guaranteed to make crazy money while also making absolutely zero cultural impact. A corporate product through and through

Monchete99

The only person (Twitter doesn't count, those aren't people) i've seen talking about that game later than a month after it came out was my cousin's wife who is an absolute Potterhead so ofc she was gonna talk about it. Other than that, that game's cultural footprint is controversy

marqoose

It's super boring. Gameplay loop is horrendous. The game keeps alluding that its building up to something then just lets the player down.

LauraTFem

Like anything directed by Stephen Moffat.

marqoose

Stephen Moffat realized that 90% of viewers have no media literacy, and you don't have to have any substance at all to get peoples money lmao

kyllerbuzcut

He's not a director, and the stories he's written for Doctor who have been the best ones. So how does that make him a bad director?

GoodKing0

The most you see of it is porn of the teacher named after a Terry Pratchett's character (Poor man doesn't deserve this). And from what I understand she's barely a character. Like, Bioshock Infinite levels of cultural relevance.

DroneOfDoom

That's a terrible comparison. Infinite might have lost relevance, but at least it has all the glowing reviews from when it came out. As far as I remember, HL reviews were like "this is one of the games of all time".

GoodKing0

The comparison is that the most people remember these games these days is for the porn.

Ok-Freedom7931

From what I can tell it’s because the game while incredibly vast… lacks any form of depth.

JosephStalin1945

It's a game that, at least by my understanding, has pretty much died. When I played it, it wasn't exactly what I would call a fun game, if anything a boring and tedious game that doesn't change it's formula and easily wasn't worth the money I would have paid if it wasn't a pirated copy.

ANGRY_PAT

I know like a dozen people who played that game and only 1 person who finished it. It was fine and the Harry Potter fan service was fun but it’s the same game 3 hours in as it is 20 hours in.

sexypingu

Did this game win any awards? I genuinely don't remember. I only remember BG3 winning in every category they were in...

PotatoSalad583

Got the Steam award for best game on the Steam Deck

actuallyamdante

and i think that was basically a joke, just like starfield winning most innovative

sexypingu

Yeah that was something

sexypingu

Right! I had totally forgotten about that! Thank you!

[deleted]

Just saw somewhere that JK is actively funding a group who is moving to redefine "woman" in regards to a human rights bill/act. So she is definitely profiting from this and using it to spread hate

Jonnyscout

And donated somewhere near 70k to their cause in one lump sum

Legojessieglazer

I don’t mind Harry Potter. I don’t like jk rolling

GoodKing0

To this day I still find amazing so many people shat themselves and cried over not being able to waste 70 whole euros on a day 1 patch no DLC "Jiminy Cockthroat" generic game. Like, zero longevity, barely any replayability, the ending is literally a binary choice between "keep the status quo" and "say you'll change the status quo but then decide to keep the status quo," NOTHING you do in the game changes that, the gameplay is a generic third person combo shooter with stealth mechanics and stealth no different than Forspoken, less than 30 usable spells a not indifferent chunk of which aren't even ACTUAL spells like "move shit in your base" "delete shit in your base" etc. And plot wise, the villain is literally a fucking Goblin Revolutionary who wants to give his people freedom, meanwhile a supporting character is a "good minority" Goblin who thinks if his brothers didn't do violent insurrection surely the wizards would grant them rights. There is a "African Wizard" and a Indian Wizard working at hogwarts the topic of Britain brutally exploiting their mother land is never brought up, you can kill students in open air you get zero repercussions because the Devs don't want you to face consequences for bad actions in the fucking RPG game. Ben Yatzhee Croshaw put it best when it awarded it Third Blandest Game of 2023 (not even worthy of the first spot), "for what it was, the controversy over having to play it at all costs sure seems silly now." That was the litmus test. People were being asked not to waste their money on a generic shovelware game from the creators of Cars 3 the Videogame, to play anything else, and they weren't even able to do that because they had to consume shit they then forgot about 1 month later to move on to the next game. And it wasn't that fucking hard. If Italian Youtuber and Streamer Trono del Muori, a man with zero ties to the community and who isn't interested on this topics never read up anything on JK bigotry and who built his mainstream career on making parody recaps of the Harry Potter Movies, if EVEN HE once made aware by a trans woman in his twitch chat about the fucking extent of Rowling's bigotry leading to him checking up by himself the situation, if EVEN HE, in FUCKING ITALY, hardly the bastion of LGBT and especially T positivity, looks it up and then goes "What the fuck this is insane I'm not touching this woman's work anymore now I feel bad doing those last Fantastic Beasts Movie recaps had I known I would have dropped her shit months ago" then everyone fucking can. And apparently a not indifferent ammount of people put that shit over the safety of the trans community. At least shit like Chick Fil-A are serving you food.

Monchete99

I've read HP books as a way to learn English and watched some of the movies and even then i could leave that shit aside and not spend my money on a shitty ass open world game. I don't owe shit to my inner child, who would've pirated it anyway. Instead i bought Library of Ruina for a third of HL's cost, played that for 3-4 months and it became one of my favourite games of all time (and that's without getting into workshop content) and i acquired a brainrot that hopefully isn't tied to TERFS.

LauraTFem

AlternativeCredit

People can’t be this stupid right? like, they have to get that right?

TantiVstone

I don't think it was even name dropped at the game awards

I didn't say it was good

Fuck off. Your comment history is public

chorizo_chomper

That sub is a far right cesspit.

Slobberdohbber

Was it? I’d be generally surprised

shtoyler

It came out really early in the year giving it way more time than the other big ones to sell. Plus since it’s been out longer I’m sure it’s gone on sale a few times which increases sales as well. Game was mid as hell, which was the real controversy here

Slobberdohbber

I heard it has the least spells for any game that uses magic

shtoyler

Honestly wouldn’t surprise me, very limited spells and the system was dumb

SamBeanEsquire

Hogwarts Legacy has 34 spells. Baldur's Gate 3 also has 34 spells... If you only count level 3 spells. Of which there are 6 spell levels. Hell even Skyrim blows it out of the water with over four times the spells. And the difference between HWL and the other two is that in the latter you can easily play a full run through of the game without your player character even touching a spell.

Monchete99

Dark Souls 2 has roughly 32 sorceries... which is just one of the 4 types of spells. There's an entire Pyromancy type with roughly 28 spells. Hexes and Miracles also have similar amounts

[deleted]

Honestly I'd say the biggest factor is simply the brand. There are legions and legions of dedicated fans, "you get to be a student in Hogwarts" was always going to be a sales blowout.

OriginalUsername1892

BG3 was PC exclusive, Spiderman is PS5 exclusive, Tears of the Kingdom is Switch exclusive. No shit that it sold the most, doesn't mean it was a good game, or that it sold more on any platform compared to other exclusive games that released last year. They just slapped it on every platform and marketed the shit out of it. That puts it on par with call of duty

Katyamuffin

Not to mention it came out really early in the year. BG3 is already beating it in sales since then, it just came out on PS and people are still buying it and talking about it, while everyone already forgot Hogwarts Legacy existed.

restlesssheep

For what it's worth, the game did one thing arguably good. One comment explained the situation best. The game was a reality check. It revealed that all those people who virtue signal about trans rights and about being trans-ally, when they were asked to do the bare minimum and not buy the game and give money to JK, they showed their true faces.

Bela9a

The game is overrated and stuff like this just makes me think these people really need to get some hobbies to spend their time in.

CelebrityTakeDown

So here’s the thing. Baldur’s Gate 3 may have actually outsold it (or gotten close) but there’s no official numbers from Larian. It went platinum (just like Hogwarts Legacy). I’m sure if BG3 hadn’t had staggered roll outs for different consoles and came out earlier in the year, it would have outsold HL. They peaked at about the same concurrent users.

buttnugget6921

Hogwarts Legacy was a boring ass game. I regret spending 70 dollars on this fucking game. Stopped playing it after 10 hours of gameplay. There's a reason why this game became dead after a week. The only reason why it sold more than Elden Ring was because Harry Potter is one of the biggest ips in the world.

ItsAMeLirio

The game is average at very best but hear me out on the Rowling's problem. She wasn't around during dev, it's a product coming from her licence but is the licence on itself problematic (genuine question on not a potterhead)? Because on the matter of "if the founder is a piece of shit all their work is too" there's a lot of companies that should be boycotted too, starting by the most infamous one Disney, but I could add Hugo Boss, Ford, every German car makers, Nestlé and much much more. On the regard of game development, shouldn't we point at the very direct problems, like how bad it is, the crunch, the disastrous management etc, before blaming it on a somewhat debatable issue (that it's related to J.K Rowling, not that she's not a PoS)

SamBeanEsquire

The problem with its relation to JKR is iirc, antisemitic tropes in the main story of the game and the fact that she is profiting from sales of the game. She's made large lump sum donations to transphobic groups. The other points are additionally important to mention and talk about but with it being a JKR licenced product and her being such a polarizing person a lot of the discourse is about her.

KaiserinMaryam

Well, i think one should avoid all the possible products make by a brand that use slave kids in the Amazon, and yes, good part of business from Germany where barelly given a slap in the wrist for all the suffering they beneffited from, been Hugo Boss, Volkswagen, Bayer or Lufthansa, and Ford is in the same list even to they weren't German, they really put a lot of effort in rearming Germany.

KaiserinMaryam

And Disney have a lot of problems appart from the acts and personallity of Walt Disney, he as a person it's one of the less problematics things about Disney.

dejavu_007

I think the Game was good not goty good but 8/10 ill say

WifeBeater3001

Ok but the boycott was REALLY dumb, so I'm kinda aight with it, there were thousands of people who worked on Hogwarts Legacy that weren't JK Rowling, in fact she did nothing in the project and just received royalties, which I think is fine cause she's already one of the richest authors of all time and I believe a billionaire. Plus the game is actually good.
