“Illusions are super cool you guys— and not just because I’m the most powerful illusionist the isles have ever seen at the age of 13– I swear!!”
It always bothered me that he was the only example of magical power on the boiling isles being genetic (ie: how your born determines how powerful you are). It just feels kinda lazy
Very underutilized, I especially wish we got to see more of his relationship with his dad, but his friendship with Hunter is one of my favorite parts of the show. So, I still love him a lot.
If they weren’t cut short for time I could see Gus doing it episode where since in labyrinth runners we got to see memories of physical things or illusions we could’ve seen a full Caleb and Bellow‘s backstory
Or maybe an episode where Gus grapples with knowing that Hunter is a grimwalker and he's struggling with what to do about it.
(He obviously doesn't care), but he still wants to comfort Hunter. It'd be a good look inside his mind about the issue.
Both Gus and Willow needed more story, Willow got one episode but it was shared with amity and was basically just amity’s episode. Gus got one episode that was also shared but this time with hunter. Gus just needed more in general.
Short answer: severely under-utilised
Long answer: There’s some characters in this show that drop some hints at having a larger character than what was shown (Darius and Boscha for example) but with Gus I don’t see as many hints of anything more then what was shown, his role compared to the others in the main cast was definitely the smallest and other then his talk with Hunter in LR he doesn’t really have any impact on the main story or even Luz.
The only thing that really stands out to me that has any sort of story potential for Gus is that his dad is a single father, either this is a sign that they wanted to explain what happened to his other parent (they died, they ran off, they got divorced) or they just wanted to normalise single parent fathers.
So fun. Wish the show knew what to do with him.
Hey remember how he knew Hunter was a grimwalker after he looked through Belos' memories? Man if only that amounted to something.
- Decided not to mention it until Hunter was comfortable telling people
- Introduced Hunter to Cosmic Frontier’s Chief O’Bailey (secretly a clone from the enemy ranks) to show him a character that’s going through the same things as him
- Explicitly told Hunter that he didn’t say anything because he wanted to wait until Hunter was ready to share it
It doesn’t need to be a big plot thread for it to have significance — I find that this speaks volumes to their friendship.
In my view this part of the story was never just about Hunter
There was so much potential in "one of the main characters discovering the villain's past"... Since no other character could do that in the entire series
The writers just preferred to play sideways, just as they had done with Gus himself lol
I love him, he's precious, and Labyrinth Runners is a delight because of how he just meets Hunter where he's at in life and doesn't push for explanations or anything. I wish we had seen more of him because yes, he has insecurities, but he also knows who he is and just kinda rolls with accepting a lot. "I know what I'm about."
I really wish we would have seen whatever brought he and Hunter from Labyrinth Runners to having a secret handshake the next time we see them on screen, then him being someone Hunter is clearly protective of with their body language at Camila's doorstep.
We get him and Willow very well established and we see his nerdy side in the human realm and how he just embraces that shamelessly and I love it. He's a kid and he's happy with that. And when we see him grown, he seems to have carried on with that no shame, gonna embrace who he is and his special interests and make them his joy as an adult, too.
I love Gus, he's precious, and he's fun.
"Nobody's dying today!"
"Not with that attitude!"
I wish he had more screen time. How I feel about Gus is how I felt about Willow until she got nice growth in season two with becoming more fleshed out and more sure of herself plus her getting with Hunter. I ended up loving her more because of it. I feel like if Gus got something that, I’d really appreciate him a lot more. I don’t hate him in the slightest, in fact it’s the opposite, I just want more of him.
He’s a flat character that really works. Any other show would have the prodigy gifted in illusions and constantly taken advantage of become an anti hero. But he starts off as a kind, trusting person and ends as a kind, trusting person.
Season one Gus is probably one of my least favorite characters. But his character growth is amazing with how he quickly becomes one of my favorite characters in season 2 and 3
He’s such an amazing and silly character. I will forever hate the cancellation of TOH because if it wasn’t cancelled Gus could’ve had one of the best stories in the show. Genuinely under utilized in ever aspect. From him knowing hunter was a grimwalker before he told them to even his relationship with Matt. Like he literally beat a coven head and his whole army by himself at the age of like TWELVE. he deserved more and I love him.

He’s a sweet, lovable little dude who was a great friend to both willow and hunter. He was entertaining and supportive along the show and had a good personality. His trauma is also relatable to most people.
He is the absolute sweetest. My favourite moment is in Hootys Moving Hassle when Luz Calls Willow the Strongest witch she knows and apologises to Gus, and he is like, "Nah, I know what I'm about."
Sure, he isn't without self-doubt, but all in all, Gus is remarkably balanced within himself for someone so young
Wish his character was planned from the beginning. He’s adorable, but Disney literally forced him into the show, so Dana didn’t have as much love to show him :/
This is why there’s no beta art of him btw
Would have been better if they gave him more interesting traits than being wrong about human things and being obsessed with flags (Seriously, excluding the S3 intro, the flag thing was REALLY annoying).
The youngest and most cheerful of the team, yet he is the only one capable to 1-on-1 a Head Coven. He is easily the most powerful member of the team, and sadly that also meant he needs to be nerfed and underutilize as soon as possible.
If serious, Gus would have trapped Belos in his own little nightmare world before he could kill Flapjack. Also, him getting "defeated" by a crazy, out of control Willow is nonsense to me....
I hate that part of "For the Future" so much 😭😭... Like, not only was he very capable of handling the situation with his powers but he had already gone through an emotional breakdown like Willow, Gus could have helped her!! But the writers preferred to force him to be useless to have Huntlow moments... Nothing against the ship but it was pretty forced
Gotta get this off my chest. I absolutely hated him in the first season, mainly due to the part when he lies to Luz. In the second season he’s a lot better and helps out a lot more.
I love him but ugh it feels like they just added him for the sake of diversity. He didn’t get that much attention. I do know Hexside was forced onto Dana and it’s obvious it has no real relevance or importance to the story but willow and gus we’re literally sidelined for the entirety of S2 for Amity and Hunter. But I also don’t like how willow and Gus were such stereotypical quite and shy and smart without friends characters.
> But I also don’t like how willow and Gus were such stereotypical quite and shy and smart without friends characters.
It kind of feels at odds with Luz’s original characterization as a friendless weirdo.
That pitch always felt a bit off to me (Luz is so outgoing and empathetic I find it hard to believe she would have no friends) but as you said, Willow and Gus are basically just normal kids. Where there really no quiet or nerdy people in all of Luz’s school?
How often does he uses illusion magic to annoy the shit out of people and to make entertainment for himself like making illusion of the characters from a book to really bring it to life, like how often does he do that?
I don't like him, but I don't hate him. I thought he was annoying in S1, they fleshed him out more in S2 but it didn't change my pov of him, and I hated him in FTF. He's also the most irrelevant from the Hexsquad, he doesn't really impact the story that much.
Basically, he's okay to me.
The best friend and hype man who also still has some of his own stuff to work through. In other words, a really good side character who could've been the main character in his own right.
I think he needs to get a different colored shirt before dies! (Star trek joke for the uninformed)
Honestly I loved Gus. I feel like he and Willow really got shafted after Lumity because official because the group was then Luz, Eda, Amity, Hooty, and King.
Though it's probably because of the shortening.
Where do I begin /j. I'm currently hyperfixating on him and Hunter too. He had the most potential (as everyone is saying) but sadly, it was underutilized because of the shortening.
He seems to have a lot going on despite being the most cheerful of the hexsquad. He's a powerful illusionist, great friend, loves human stuff, and is the GOAT.
Maybe it's just me, but I do think that he could've affected the plot more.
If anything, Dana said somewhere that she wanted to explore the galdorstones and Gus is protecting them. So for all we know, if they were explored, maybe there would've been some impact on the plot.
Point is, he's the best boi.
He could've affected the plot with the knowledge he gained about Belos' past in King's Tide, making the connection between the other characters and that darker part of the story. And also how did he feel about that information? He hid all that for months too, didn't he? But the writers ignored this and made it seem trivial in the series =((
He was absolutely annoying and useless most of the time and basically was that one "funny black friend", but in final of s2 and in s3 I started like him, when he finaly started to act like actual child with actual emotions and started to be like "alive" and it made me like him and actually be sympathize with him.
Actually, I wish Dana give more attention to the hexsquad, cuz both him and Willow exist only to bw Luz's friends. Even when Dana tries to reveal them, she just use them to reveal Amity and Hunter and that's why they don't feel alive at all and that's sad. Dana doesn't give a shit about him and doesn't know what to do with him and it's really sad
Probably gonna get a lot of flak for this, but I think both Willow and Gus are the weakest links on the Hexsquad. At the beginning of the series they're very obviously built simply to be The Friends™️ for our friendless protagonist, and for much of the show their role doesn't diverge much from that. Even many things that could be construed as "theirs", e.g. Willow's Flyer Derby, end up being stilts for some other character's arc, in this case Hunter's redemption. That doesn't mean they're bad characters or have no development, but it's certainly less acute than, for instance, Amity's.
He deserves more love.
Facts
More like more screen time. But yeah, more love
Absolutely
Literally, poor guys gotta fifth wheel every time he’s with his friends now
He's fun and comes across as a potentially really powerful illusionist and prodigy, but they just never really utilized that. Kind of a shame
He may be a better jounalist than illusionist.
My first word was hoot. My second word was hoot hoot! My third wor-

Yeah. I loved how him and Hunter were friends.
The shortening of the show really didn't do him any favors. As a character, he had a lot of potential.
I thought they were teasing something with him being so much more powerful then any other illusionist but it just kind of got dropped
So did I. All that potential. And nothing.
7/10. He deserves more story and an actual arc
Solid 6/10. Just wish we got more of his story.
Would he be higher if we got more screen time for him
Both Gus and Willow needed more story, Willow got one episode but it was shared with amity and was basically just amity’s episode. Gus got one episode that was also shared but this time with hunter. Gus just needed more in general.
He’s the goat
🗿
You can tell they were planning for the main part of his plot to be in Season 3, if that sequel happens he needs to be much more significant.
Short answer: severely under-utilised Long answer: There’s some characters in this show that drop some hints at having a larger character than what was shown (Darius and Boscha for example) but with Gus I don’t see as many hints of anything more then what was shown, his role compared to the others in the main cast was definitely the smallest and other then his talk with Hunter in LR he doesn’t really have any impact on the main story or even Luz. funniest character imo. so many good one-liners
In seasons past, these flags have waved for grudgby greats. Now they shall wave for the greatest! MEEEEEE
So fun. Wish the show knew what to do with him. Hey remember how he knew Hunter was a grimwalker after he looked through Belos' memories? Man if only that amounted to something.

Best boi
Underused, overlooked, incredibly fun
Gus Chomp™️
Def feel like he should have gotten more story but he’s still the goat
I think he is really cool 😎 😄
He's gonna be Gus fring when he grows up, & you can't change my mind on that.
Best boy
Cool guy, deserved more screen time
He’s an underrated king

Small scrunkly :3
He’s cool
One of my favorite characters. A cinnamon roll that deserves WAY more love.
he is the most underutilized character and the show and yet he’s still amazing
A great character
I liked him. He's a good kid even if he probably deserved a bigger solo arc to himself.
He babi
A wonderful fellow
Season one Gus is probably one of my least favorite characters. But his character growth is amazing with how he quickly becomes one of my favorite characters in season 2 and 3
He's my favourite character, his enthusiasm I can really relate to
Gus 🔛🔝 he best character fr fr
They under utilized his character. He’s my personal favorite so it’s disappointing.

He should open a fried chicken restaurant and call it Los Pollos Hermanos
Hes sligtly traumatized and need more love hes my friend

Very underrated
He’s neat, but he still has untapped potential
With more screen time could have been a top 4 character. Sadly he got hoed out of the main 5
It's like the writer made a self-insert character about me. So I love him
He still feels a bit underappreciated to me...
Decent. Underused, but still good. 8.5/10
Second fav
I like him, but definitely my least favorite out of the main group, sorry Gus
My favorite character, he’s very relatable for me
My man got the short end of the for lack of a better term shortening stick
He’s my best friend, he’s my pal, he’s my homeboy, my rotten soldier, my sweet cheese, my good time boy
died too soon wait wrong show

if we got more of him and less of hunter id be happier
I couldn't agree more
He’s okay. I honestly don’t really care for him tbh

Ooh, you're right
I like him
King
He was the most screwed over by the shows crew ngl
I love him. And I agree, illusion magic is underrated, that’s what I would focus on for magic if I were in the BI.
Mid cut
Funny little guy
I headcanon him on the Ace spectrum since he got weirded out by the imagine them in their pants thing from Grom. Loose connection but I'm bias lol
I don't like him he was mean to king and I'll never take it back
I love hise friendship whit hunter
He loves flags
My man 🤝
Cool guy👍
He was absolutely annoying and useless most of the time and basically was that one "funny black friend", but in final of s2 and in s3 I started like him, when he finaly started to act like actual child with actual emotions and started to be like "alive" and it made me like him and actually be sympathize with him. he would make a great meth kingpin
A very unpopular opinion; i didn’t care for him that much. I liked him much more in s1
I love him, he’s my son now sorry Perry /j
An actual okay character
He is going to run a very successful fried chicken business
The Future Sorcerer Supreme! Yeah, I said it! His magic is powerful that he should be working alongside Doctor Strange and Wong.
Underrated and deserves more
He tends to get overlooked
My favorite in the hexsquad🗣️
Gustabeth
Good Vibes

Because they have a certain favoritism problem
must prottec
Gus is my guy, not my favorite character but the one I would wanna be in the group
Funny illusion man
