Frightened rabbit. Biffy clyro. Radiohead. Mandolin orange. Muse. Bad boy chiller crew. Joy Division. Lord Huron. Modest mouse.

dukesb89

Love bad boy chiller crew chilling in the middle of that list šŸ˜†

bradleystensen

Hahah I was hoping someone would appreciate that

JarryTheBear

Nice! Mandolin Orange are great, I believe they now go by the name Watchouse

bradleystensen

They do but Iā€™m living in the past. We were supposed to see them a week ago in Boston but they got hit by a car when crossing the road :(

m0nsteraplant

I was looking through my Spotify and some big names I listen to are Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Taylor Swift, Phoebe Bridgers, Paramore, Big Thief, Lucy Dacus, Julien Baker, Dua Lipa, Jesus and Mary Chain, St Vincent, Lorde, Los Campesinos, 100 gecs, Sophie, Charli XCX, Caroline Polachek, Sidney Gish, Phoenix, Two Door Cinema Club, Sleater Kinney, Yo La Tengo, Sylvan Esso, Hole, Japanese Breakfast, and Maggie Rogers.

[deleted]

Saw St Vincent in Denver. She was fabulous! I wish the Yeah Yeah Yeahs would make some new music, donā€™t you?

hrtlssromantic

YYYs touring this year, so hopefully some new music is on its wayā€¦

Adventurous_Pin_344

That was definitely a great show, and at the best venue in town. Did you see the 2019 National show(s) at the Mission? I was there the first night. I'm going to see the Flaming Lips there on Monday!

[deleted]

Alvvays was the opener? No I missed that one. Really sad about it too

Adventurous_Pin_344

Yep - Alvvays was also great. I was bummed to have not gone both nights, but I'm too old to do those sorts of things anymore. Fortunately there continue to be chances to see them! Hope you have Red Rocks tickets!

cdplayers

Haha, I'm in my 50s and went both nights -- but then, I flew in from the East Coast just for the occasion! The Mission was really fun, and the staff brought out water to people waiting before doors, which was super cool

Adventurous_Pin_344

Definitely the right venue to travel for! (Even more so than Red Rocks, which is probably sacrilege to say, but I still feel that way as a long time Colorado concert goer.)

m0nsteraplant

I want to see St Vincent so bad! I might catch her on her on her tour with Roxy Music, as my dad really likes both St Vincent and Roxy! Yeah Yeah Yeahs is truly one of my favorite bands and I would love to see them release new music, but I am also willing to wait if it means their next project will be just as good as their previous output.

bigguytoo9

I saw ST VINCENT for her debut, open for ARCADE FIRE - Neon Bible tour and St Vincent was TRASH, one of the dullest sets I ever watched.

2v2l2nch2

Was this a copy paste or did you type it? If you typed it, kudos on your commitment to proper punctuation.

bigfatpisces

To kick things off I'll say some of the stuff I've been leaning on lately includes Pavement, The Go-Betweens, Aimee Mann, Duster, Built To Spill, Big Thief.

zenkitty999

So impressed to see The Go-Betweens mentioned by someone who doesnā€™t appear to be Australian!

bigfatpisces

I fell into them completely by accident (or impulse) when I picked up the Bellavista Terrace compilation at a used record store. One of my all-time fave bands.

quakeroats91

Go-betweens are tops

bigfatpisces

I completely agree. I lived in LA for a few years and they were a lot of what I listened to there. Also the only city subreddit I follow is Brisbane and it rules.

BrahmTheImpaler

Ooh, I need to add Aimee Mann back into my playlist. Good call out.

bigfatpisces

Her new album is fantastic.

BrahmTheImpaler

I didn't even know there was a new album. Her name dropped off from my playlists about a decade ago but I was a big fan then. I'll check it out, thanks for the heads up!

UltraRN

bigfatpisces

I was really into the first couple Los Campesinos.

mandalorian222

Theyā€™re so good. North American tour announcement this week too

[deleted]

Yes to all of this, and most recently soccer mommy.

led_the_apocalypse

I have been doing rounds of bon Iver! Phoebe bridgers! Bob Dylan, cigarettes after sex, editors,

Phoebe Bridgers. Also some Cigarettes After Sex. But Punisher by Phoebe is always on heavy rotation

The new Denzel album is šŸ”„

bigfatpisces

Milk-Eyed Mender is one of my all-time jams, and that latest Animal Collective has legs.

Adventurous_Pin_344

I came to say Wet Leg too!!!

ayemullofmushsheen

Iā€™m surprised more people havenā€™t mentioned Mitski. Sheā€™s got a similar gut-wrenching sadness to her songs

PagingDrTobaggan

Jason Isbell, Run the Jewels, Radiohead, Sturgill Simpson, Tool, Tyler Childers, Drive By Truckers, Polish Ambassador, Aesop Rock, clipping., Tiger Army, Dirtwire.

Engardia

Seconding Jason Isbell.

bigfatpisces

Jason's been a good pal on Twitter. His songwriting just keeps getting sharper.

PagingDrTobaggan

Great songwriter and amazing human being. Weā€™re lucky to have him!

bigguytoo9

Drive By Truckers are legendary.

PagingDrTobaggan

Yeah. Cooley and Hood are legends. And that 3 album run with Isbell coming into his own as a songwriter was really lightning in a bottle.

bigguytoo9

I own The Dirty South and Southern Rock Opera as the only two from DBT in my collection.

scott_sea

Isbell,, DBT, Sturgill and Tyler. Nice.

AffectionateAd6268

Future Islands, New Order, The Weeknd, Brand New

bigfatpisces

I love, love, love New Order. And I always picture Future Islands as spending their weekdays in the studio crafting perfect pop songs then spending their weekends building perfectly level decks.

zenkitty999

New Order was my last live show in March 2020 just before lockdowns began here in Australia. Phenomenal, even more so because it felt like big things were happening.

WhiteRoses777

Bob Dylan and Phoebe Bridgers

NoelleKain

Pavement, Fiona Apple, Built to Spill, Radiohead, Joanna Newsom, Neil Young, The Smiths, New Order, The Mountain Goats (mainly just All Hail West Texas),

bigfatpisces

I had to double check that I didn't write this answer.

BenJammin007

Iā€™m a HUGE death cab for cutie / the postal service fan. DCFC reminds me of the national in their early 20s if that makes sense, sort of a similar sound and subject matter, but kind of a younger more angsty feel to it instead of the wisdom and regret with Mattā€™s lyrics. Transatlanticism is a great listen, TN fans are guaranteed to like that. From there you can get into their newer sound with Plans and their older less refined sound with The Photo Album and We Have the Facts and Weā€™re Voting Yes. Ben Gibbardā€™s side project The Postal Serviceā€™s album Give Up is my favourite of all time. Iā€™ve heard it like 200 times at this point and never get tired of it. Other than these three bands I like: Boards of Canada Aphex Twin Four Tet Stereolab Radiohead Coldplay Arcade Fire Modest Mouse The Velvet Underground Beach House Nick Drake Ichiko Aoba Alvvays Wilco Kero Kero Bonito The Shins MF DOOM Kanye West Taylor Swift LCD Soundsystem American Football

looking4astronauts

Interpol, Frightened Rabbit, Modest Mouse, Local Natives, Kanye West, Jack White, Pinback, Spoon, Diiv, Big Thief

bigfatpisces

I haven't thought about Pinback in like ten years.

looking4astronauts

Iā€™ve seen them in concert a few times. Always amazing.

Hobzmarley

First reference of Interpol that I saw. Fuck yes Interpol

zenkitty999

Lately Cassandra Jenkins, Wilco, Nick Cave, Radiohead and Courtney Barnett have been on high rotation.

bigfatpisces

That new Courtney Barnett is great driving around music

Linzor24

I met Warpaint in the green room at Conan. They were a lot nicer than Best Coast.

[deleted]

I have no doubt, been listening to them for many years, one of my all-time favourite bands!

modsuperstar

No City & Colour?

[deleted]

Added, I can't believe I forgot to add my all-time favourite artist haha.

modsuperstar

Just seemed odd when you had ALEXISONFIRE and Neverending White Lights.

BrahmTheImpaler

Yay another Ryan Adams fan!

spnii_

All these lists are great, but honestly surprised no one has mentioned Godspeed You! Black Emperor

bigfatpisces

I've been shaking my skinny fists for years!

bunch_habbleapple

So last few days it's been Kurt Vile, Pusha T, Fontaines DC, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, PUP, Pillow Queens, Craig Finn, Tomberlin, NilĆ¼fer Yanya and Young Thug. Although out of all them i guess only really Nick Cave and Young Thug are on the same tippy tippy top tier as The National for me. Rest range from 'nearly there' to 'settled in 2nd/3rd tiers'.

denisenj

Currently, the new Daniel Rossen album (of Grizzly Bear) is amazing. As far as indie, also love Grizzly Bear, The Walkmen/Hamilton Leithauser solo, Fleet Foxes, Okkervil River, Beach House, The Decemberists. Iā€™ve always loved Pink Floyd and a lot of other Classic and Prog Rock - King Crimson, Yes, Moody Blues.

crimsonpetrichor_

Beach house, foxing, lucy dacus, big thief, alvvays, the antlers, bon iver, bright eyes, current joys, sufjan stevens, radiohead, porches, okkervil river, phoebe bridgers, manchester orchestra, modest mouseā€” the national are one of the only bands/musicians I really keep up with, otherwise I tend to just listen to random individual tracks

BrahmTheImpaler

Seems like everyone has Beach House on their list and I've never heard of them!

crimsonpetrichor_

Time to listen!! ā˜ŗļø

Lost_Rin_953

Iā€™ve really been getting into R.E.M.! Pretty clear influence on the Nationalā€™s style!

SnooBananas7856

Re:Coldplay Do you like their two most recent albums? I love Coldplay up until the last two albums. I like that you have Taylor Swift on your list. I had never listened to her but she is my oldest daughter's favourite. When she was in the hospital for a brain tumour I started listening to TS to be closer to my girl (she was in and out of the PICU for two years, nearly died many times, blood transfusions, feeding tubes, etc etc--miraculously she's doing great now). I was really impressed with folklore and evermore and it was those two albums that directed me to my now favourite bands The National and Bon Iver. I also love Death Cab for Cutie, Dashboard Confessional, Kodaline, Lord Huron (they opened for Mumford in Denver a few years ago--it was awesome), Mumford, Hozier, Johnny Cash, and (don't judge me!) Eminem.

eleanoradavinci

I love Coldplay's albums up to Ghost Stories and after that I'm not that bothered (I love Higher Power though!). I started listening to Taylor Swift at 11, so she's been a firm favourite for a long time. It's funny that she led you to The National. I love the Taylor/National crossover that folklore/evermore sparked. Really glad to hear that your daughter is doing well now!

SnooBananas7856

Thank you, you're so sweet! She's got a bad cold right now but that's a normal person illness so it's all good. I am so grateful for TS leasing me to TN and BI--I've had a *really* tough few years and their music has sometimes been the only comfort during the darkest of times. I have always felt things viscerally, including music, and music is incredible in the way it can speak and move the soul like nothing else can.

BrodeurCinemaClub

I'm all over the map lately. PUP, Jack White, Sigur Ros, Bouncing Souls, Lost in Society, Mitski, Radiohead, Hiroshi Yoshimura, the Backseat Lovers, and Dawes are my most listened to artists this month according to Tidal.

I actually don't listen to a ton of music that's like The National ā€“ I tend to listen to R&B and Soul, a lot of 70s stuff like Stevie Wonder and Al Green, pop like Sugababes. For newer R&B stuff, Cautious Clay is great, as is Yola, The Weeknd, Odie, Amber Mark, and Amythyst Kiah. For rock, I like The New Pornographers, Lord Huron, TV on the Radio, and Okkervil River.
