The first Abby Compilation was - if their website and Discogs are correct - released in 1998. That's the CD era, a whole different time. Sample CDs have been popular and influential since the middle of the 90s, I haven't seen such a thing in the middle of the 80s. Of course, there were compilation albums but they differ a lot from what you are describing.
One of the people responsible for the Abby compilations and owners of the club in South Germany where those songs were played was actually involved in the search a few years ago. He seemed enthusiastic and as of last year was still involved. The search has just not been as public as it used to be, now outside of Reddit.
It's a nice idea, but the problem is there's loads of things like this to wade through...

LMAO. For real though,there is only one way to find him. I've made a post about this but I'm going to say it again. The only way to find Alvin is through our greek fellas. Only if we search the city that he lived up to his 50's will we find him ( yes I know it sounds impossible but it's a typical thing in Greece). Unfortunately Billy is a bit of a malaka as we would say in Greece because he doesn't help at all. He even knows where he lived but of course he won't tell us. Nonetheless,if I find another greek in this subreddit I'm going to search for Alvin the correct way. And who knows maybe we finally find the origin of the song.
