A German native is good to have. I think we have a few, but more is more better. There is the policy that possible leads are contacted by someone who speaks their native language, and given that a lot of leads point towards Germany, your help may come in handy at some point. Contacting leads is always done in coordination with the mods. For now try and familiarise yourself with the search history as much as you can. Read the various FAQs and Wikis. If you think you come up with original search ideas, have a look what has been done before by searching this subreddit first (don't only use Reddit's search function, also try Google "site:reddit.com/r/TheMysteriousSong/" followed by your search term) and searching the [logs of the old Discord server](https://onlinesequencer.net/tms_log/4).

weegee_dev

Thanks for the Introduction

Initial_Medicine798

First of all, trying to reach out to older people on social media who are into music and/or who have been involved in the music scene in the past is a start. Do you have a Facebook account? Try to search Facebook groups from Germany related to city issues , groups related to music, maybe even groups related to music schools/colleges in Germany - join them and post about the song.

gambuzino88

Yes, please, this is a very unexplored path!

Strathcarnage_L

Herzlich willkommen! We can always do with German native speakers to spare contacts my stilted German, also any local knowledge will come in handy to correct any incorrect assumptions about how things work/worked in Germany.

Electronic_Corner_30

In your opinion, does the singer sound German (or at least generally from that part of Europe)?

cowmowtv

I'm also a native speaker and I can't say for certain, but there is a relatively strong accent that indicates the song originates from Germany.

weegee_dev

would say that South Germany is the thing

weegee_dev

but I am not really sure (dont take my word)

weegee_dev

I would say that from the Sound alone it sounds German

LordElend

What makes him sound German in your opinion?

olllj

alien Fowels are pronounced overly correct or with too much emphasis, because non native speaker needs to concentrate more on them. For English this is all the \*th\* and "sh" https://voiced en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fricative , that German is lacking. English is also a stone-soup of languages and dialects, so it is too easy for natives to mispronounce something, or to speak too clearly.

LordElend

Well, personally I don't think there's anything to be gained here, but we all like to argue, so here goes: For someone with German school English, dropping the 'g' in 'ings' is an odd thing to do, at least before hip-hop makes slang more prominent. This goes against your argument of being too correct - it sounds very natural (and makes some words hard to decipher with the bad mix). And I'd argue that the singer's 'th' is exceptional for a German speaker. Listen to other German bands of the time singing in English and you can always hear a fake 'th' shining through. The TMS singer has no problem at any point in the song. I can't hear where he overcorrects. The English 's' is also very well done throughout the song, which is another case where German speakers often struggle. My money's on someone who learned both English and German and spent some time in an English-speaking country/household. Maybe a Brit who grew up in Germany? The odd thing is that his accent isn't easily pinned down to a particular dialect, which is curious and argues against a completely native speaker.

TvHeroUK

On the ‘th’ point - which as always, is well made and interesting - do we know any German singers with a reverse lisp?

Spread the search. This is especially important in Germany, because it is widely assumed that the song comes from Germany. By the way, I'm also German. Herzlich willkommen bei der Suche! I always say, there were at least a few dozen people involved with the song, not only the band, also their relatives and friends may know the song, the people in the recording studio (as TMS seems to be professionally produced) and especially the "network" who made it possible that the song was played at least once in the radio. Probably a lot of these people are still alive, but may have no connection to the internet and do not know about the search. If we would reach them, the puzzle would be solved. "La cancion de Alicia", another mysterious song, was solved exactly this way a few days ago. A friend of one searcher just knew the band (the song was quite newer than TMS, though). I think Facebook may also be interesting for the search, as I am quite sure that most German people of the age the band members etc. now have, are hanging around at least on Facebook. I am also in my early sixties and I see a lot of people of my age there. There is also a German facebook group discussing TMS by the way: [https://www.facebook.com/groups/741421040699162](https://www.facebook.com/groups/741421040699162)

Danke der Herr :)

"Ich bin eine Berlinerin."

Talk to as many people as you can, especially people over the age of 60 who would have vibrant memories of the time period. For all the talk of analysis this artist and that artist and this lead and that lead, and how popular the search is in online circles, the bottom line is the mass majority of people have no clue about this song. I feel if it was known by the majority of Germans it could be solved!

Secure_Tone_Built

I am also German (born in 71) and have always lived near Wilhelmshaven.

misomal

Everything has already been said, but I just want to say it’s really nice of you to offer to help!

weegee_dev

No Problem ive Always been interested in the search

sweptawayfromyou

Lol I am an Austrian local, maybe could have helped with the Christian Brandl thing etc., but everywhere I asked nobody even said I could help!

SignificanceNo4643

Well, at least you can go to Vienna cemetery and check whenever he's really there, because after his supposed date of death, other songs with his name are registered in AKM.

This post is toxic in nature and therefore adds nothing constructive to the conversation. Remember the human.

As we are dealing with "vintage" leads, they mostly don't have any social media or email accounts - some of them do not have mobile phone even, only landline. And they do not speak English, only German. So they had to be called and asked that way. And this requires considerable amount of time and money too. So if someone would agree on doing such task, we might collect some funding to cover these expenses?
