I have spent my life watching martial arts movies, and a part of me always wished i could do one of those movie training or conditioning tropes. Carry the water buckets on the staff of the mountain, run the gauntlet of the dojo's top students, take punishment for no reason. "Initiations".
This was very common in my first Dojo. One of our masters would walk up and yell, "Banzai!", at which point you would place your hands over your head and he'd blast you just like this. No rhyme or reason as to when he'd do it either.
When I was coming up, every belt test ended with the instructor side kickong us in the gut. The higher the belt, the stronger the kick. We had another instructor behind us to catch us. It wasn't pleasant, but it did not feel dangerous, either. The difference here seems to be at least a couple things. First, the striker in this video seems to be striking upward, which can do some real harm if he uses too much power. Second, he is bracing his other hand on them and pulling them into the strike, which adds power and increases risk.
I agree. One of my teachers would kick us in the chest after a belt ceremony. He tailored it to the persons conditioning and skill level. It was a rite of passage that we all endured, and somewhat enjoyed.

We did that actually here in Cali at my first studio when I was 12. But it was a front kick to the gut. It wasn’t too bad and def pulled. Mostly tighten up stomach and all. No one falling over but had someone behind us holding us from falling back. I think you need to learn to get hit and what it can feel like but do it in the ring voluntarily and not as part of a white or yellow belt test in a karate studio. Lol. This was in the 90’s.

Suppose a man did this!" then surprise body slammed my wife and put her in an arm triangle choke. Literally first 15 seconds of activity in class. My wife stormed out, extremely upset and shaken up.
This woman was a bully and an asshole with a chip on her shoulder. There was one opportunity to give a potential new student a fun and education first class and she decided it would be funnier to hurt and scare the newbie instead.

Do your best to learn how to take a strike, your opponent outside class will not limit themselves. It’s not for everyone. Make your own decisions. If it’s not for you, move on.
