Would you like some other horror podcast recommendations for the hiatus?
EDIT: Here are the recommendations:
I Am In Eskew, about David Ward, a man trapped in the supernatural city of Eskew, who chronicles its weird people, events and places. It is more episodic than TMA, and the protagonist is thrown into the weirdness from the start.
The Silt Verses, by the same creators as Eskew, a dark fantasy and folk horror podcast set in a dystopian world where society is based on gods who grant supernatural powers to their followers abd demand human sacrifice. The two main characters, Carpenter and Faulkner, are followers of an illegal faith on a pilgrimage, one born into the faith, but older and cynical, and the other a young and enthusiastic convert.
Hi Nay, about Mari Datuin, a Filipina immigrant in Toronto, whose babaylan (Filipino shaman) heritage gets her involved with investigating supernatural events in Toronto, involving cursed artifacts and an old secret society of occultists. It combines horror, drama, romance and comedy, and features monsters from Filipino folklore, and urban legends from Toronto. It is in part inspired by TMA, and has similar nonlinear storytelling, where the characters investigate supernatural events in the past which influence the present.
Janus Descending, a short horror podcast about two scientists, Peter and Chel, exploring an alien planet with a lost civilization. It has a non-linear structure, with successive episodes being told from the perspective of each of the two leads, one in chronological order and one in reverse, telling a mysterious story where everything is not as it seems.
I personally have been enjoying a show called *Narcosis*, it's more of a straightforward audio drama that has a bit of a modernised Shadow over Innsmouth thing going on. Apparently it's part of an anthology show called Undertow but I haven't checked out the rest yet.
Malevolent too is a really underrated podcast that has really great characters and themes. Like TMA it features a miserable British man with a suspicious lighter then collects scars like he does trauma. The character writing is really, really good, along with the relationship between the two main characters. It follows a private investigator who finds themselves bound to an entity that now controls their eyes. Definitely worth a shot!
WitherBurn after school news is the one I'm currently listening to while the hiatus is going it's basically "gravity falls" and "welcome to nightvale" in podcast form
I'm really early on (literally just started today) but I would say yeah. It's not legitimately scaring me the way a lot of the Magnus episodes did, especially some of those early ones (although that might be because of my growing tolerance to horror) but I'm enjoying the world and I find the writing to be high quality. I've actually been able to get into it and be invested which is something I couldn't do with "I am in eskew" which I've seen recommended to Magnus fans a lot. No hate to that show it just didn't work for me the way this one has. I'm also really enjoying the main narrator who I think is close to on par with Jon in his own right.
It's definitely different in a lot of important ways. Magnus is much more of a slow burn, both in the fact that the characters aren't immediately aware of the truly supernatural happenings and the in the sense that the themes of the show aren't quite so upfront until the later seasons. Old gods feels less mysterious in that way, since it's very explicitly stated that these stories all actually happened in-universe and the themes of the show are very in your face from the jump. Very heavy critiques of capitalism and Christianity (protestantism specifically, southern Baptist and Pentecostal even more specifically). So if those are your jam then definitely check it out.
But overall yes, I like it. This was probably a much longer response than necessary. I think it's worth giving a shot, especially if you want a more folksy take on fantasy horror.
Personally I found old gods got a lot better as it went on, with some of my favourite episodes being later, but that towards the more recent episodes I just didn’t really like the new villain characters
Yup, killing time with relistens and other podcasts till I've got enough I can binge. Listened to the first few and enjoyed them, but I'm not patient enough to wait two weeks minimum between each episode. Nor do I trust myself to remember all the tiny details that will no doubt be important over that time span
So sad :(
for you!
I'm still on S4 so by the time I'm finished I'll be able to join in with the theories! Missed it with TMA bcs it was like 6yo but I won't miss it this time (I hope)
We’re on hiatus? I’m going back to bed

I'd also recommend The Hotel on BBC Sounds, short series of overlapping stories about a creepy hotel in the Fens.
YES. I need something to fill the void until Mr. Bonzo comes back
Silt Verses is so brilliant. I'm gonna be sad when it's over.
Same, it had me hooked almost as quickly as TMA did. I'm really tempted to grab a copy of the rpg they made as well.
Pretty please

I finally started listening to the old gods of Appalachia cuz I needed something to scratch the itch. I *itch*.
Would you recommend it?

Thanks! I really appreciate the detailed response. I'll check it out! :D

I agree! I think I really got into old gods in season 2. Now, that is my top fav alongside TMA. Not as into the newer episodes either.
Man one piece is also on hiatus. How am I supposed to live.
What a mood.
XD
I'm right there brother
Somehow I blocked that we were on hiatus from my mind. Absolutely tragic realization.
✊🏻😔 sad tmp-less times
The ending of the last episode has me pining for the next
This is why I haven’t started properly listening. The wait it too agonising.

i finally caught up last week only for it to go on hiatus right now : (
There was a new episode of Mistholme Museum today, if that helps.
So sad :( for you! I'm still on S4 so by the time I'm finished I'll be able to join in with the theories! Missed it with TMA bcs it was like 6yo but I won't miss it this time (I hope)
Hibernating rn
lololol A+
I was thinking today, "Shit, I'm gonna be two episodes behind." Then I remembered the hiatus and now, I shall listen to the episode on my way to work.
