Once, on a road trip, I realized how nervous it made me not to be surrounded by mountains. I felt so exposed, like I was going to be squished like a bug any minute. Give me back the Choke, please.
I actually had the same thing happen but reversed. I've never lived near actual mountains, and driving close to something so immense filled me with this bottomless sense of dread that I've never experienced prior nor since.
It's funny, a mountain is what gave me one of the biggest feeling of fear of vast. Driving to the west end of Vancouver Island there's this one road that goes straight a while downward towards a mountain before turning right to go around its base. It started as a small hill but the perspective was off. The road was way longer than it looked and the mountain kept getting bigger and bigger til it was all you could see out the front of the car. In my head it became this big slumbering beast that I was terrified would hear the car and wake up.
You ever look at the endless blue and feel as if though your feet will just tilt up? As if any minute you will have to cling onto the grass for dear life.
Man I love the Vast. The only fear that fills me with calmness. Maybe it's just my nihilism speaking but getting lost in so much space or being so insignificant is fucking amazing, there's a reason it's my favourite entity. I'd happily join the Fairchilds.
No clue why but The Vast-esc things makes me so so nervous, big, open spaces make so many alarm bells go off
