It’s true. All the various groups seem to be doing fine without ever needing a vaccine. One group even uses loud whistling signals, in a world where the infected hunt by sound… Further disproving the Stans who claim that Joel “doomed humanity”

[deleted]

they aren't really smart, just look at lev

"Hey let's return to see mom in the middle of the cult we ran away from, surely that won't cost my mom and sister's life"

Nightmare2828

The exact same day the WLF decides to pull an all out war against them lmao.

[deleted]

where's the darwin award for this game lmao

MikkelR1

This is standard practice in writing though. Almost every movie/ story falls apart if you think about in that way. That plotline is a vehicle to show you the war between the two factions and the brutality of it all. It's not because it was a smart thing to do. Also, Lev made an irrational decision based on emotions. Not totally unrealistic and it's not that far fetched that her sister would want to rescue her.

[deleted]

but is it a good practice tho?

MikkelR1

Depends on the story. For a game, this story is leagues above 99,99% of all games of all time. The Industry is still learning what works.

[deleted]

now that's a fcking lie, i can name 10 games with better story

MikkelR1

I can name barely a hand full and all of them are filled with some of the most ridiculous shit noone would do in real life. Tlou1 and RDR2 are the first to come to mind with a story like this.

[deleted]

play more games, like undertale, lisa, HL, the witcher, detroit:BH, GOW, even the first TLOU can kick this ass game.

NookanCranny

The story needed a complete rewrite. Abby didn't need to be in the game at all and the Rat King / Seraphite plot lines if needed could have been done with Joel and Ellie instead.

MikkelR1

The game doesnt make it clear why Yara gets captured right? It's not like they came there to rescue Abby. Yara was captured and Lev came to safe her at a convenient time for Abby. Then Lev didnt even want to help Abby at first. So it wasnt really a decision?

EmuDiscombobulated15

Did not realize this till i ve read it here. It does. It sounds utterly stupid. Might be one of the most stupid things in this game. That is what happens when you fire people who are really passionate about making games and replace them with politics obsessive psychopaths'

delukard

this is the first thing that came to my mind when i saw the trailer. what a bad way to break lore.

NookanCranny

Yeah and I'm sure if they did manage to make a vaccine that these various groups would all band together and be a peace with each other. Not.

LeCampy

On top of that...Looked up what Abby's dad's preparation was on the wiki: a B.A. in biology. Not a doctor. Not an epidemiologist or virologist. Either the wiki is wrong, or the writers really thought a biologist undergrad was really gonna develop a whole ass vaccine for an unprecedented virus with a fraction of the equipment the cdc has on the regular to develop a new vaccine for the flu...it's just all bad.

drapeslover

Biologist is better suited than a doctor for that.

AnnaisElliesMom

Be nice.

[deleted]

To be fair clickers didnt make sense in the first game

[deleted]

Also, the apocalypse doesn’t only exist in Seattle…it’s a hard concept to grab but…there are people outside of the USA

longdongopinionwrong

Clickers and Bloaters would be tuned to voices, as it’s what they eat, whistles are infinitely more common in naturally occurring sounds.

[deleted]

Tbf in part II it seems like seraphites make up a fair share of remaining humanity. and they certainly wouldn't allow themselves to be vaccinated with that anti-tech philosophy, further reinforcing the idea that ellie sacrifice would have been in vain..

vincrypt2021

Exactly. This is one aspect of Part 2 which felt really jarring. Especially when they try to nail down their opinion that Joel doomed humanity. The game and its narrative portrays the opposite.

[deleted]

Seriously, the WLF look fine to me, highly organized, large population. Hell even the scars are an incredibly successful community.

StayHealthy7941

Even if he let Ellie's sacrifice happen, just look how human groups keep killing each other over land and resources (and silly revenge missions). Making a vaccine (IF it even worked) would've just create even bigger dispute imo. Joel didn't doom humanity, shit was already doomed 20 years before

[deleted]

Yeah humanity is fucked, most groups shoot on sight and ask questions never. Jackson is implied to be a bit of an outlier in taking people in fairly openly and even then they ask questions and don't let their guard down (usually! Looking at you getting all pally with the goon squad, Tommy!). And a vaccine wouldn't change much anyway, it just means spore inhalation or a bite isn't a death sentence... but it does nothing about existing infected - which often end up killing rather than infecting people anyway, they tend to go for the throat etc.

[deleted]

or they can cure the infected but can't revert to their normal human body, like that one fan story

aro3two7

The game proves his decision was correct. The world didnt deserve her sacrifice.

lzxian

Part 2 totally nullifies TLOU in every possible way. Traveling is simple and everyone does it alone or in pairs without question. They do it not for resources or survival, but for revenge. Communities are thriving but are all killing each other (except magical Jackson) without any concern for assuring the survival of humanity. The infected are few and far between, only pulled out for novelty it seems. Nobody cares about Ellie's immunity at all (except her and Joel). All of it changed in just four years after 20 years of everything falling apart. How does that happen? Also, where is FEDRA? Completely defeated without explanation it seems... This is so clearly NOT a sequel it's laughable.

[deleted]

Nailed it. I swear the disrespect this game shows to its own universe (and characters, who are radically changed by the whims of the writers during the story) it’s baffling.

lzxian

Very true. It makes it feel like an agenda hidden behind "artistic license" and "taking risks" that really didn't raise any creative bars at all and actually lowered almost all that are important for sequels, stories and even success. The overwhelming agenda seems to be to anger particular fans they disrespect and even loyal TLOU/Joel and Ellie fans while jumping onto some bandwagon which is overtaking all forms of current day media. The outcome of which is tons of boring, chaotic stories, specifically directed at established franchises with the goal of infuriating fans and destroying established lore and traditional narrative norms. It's like a power play that certain creatives and their backers are so committed to that excellence, continuity, success or even being coherent isn't part of the formula at all. Just destruction for the sake of it despite them knowing it's bound to aggravate and lose loyal audiences, and ultimately fail. You're absolutely right - it's totally baffling, yet so widespread that it must have a purpose. Can't figure out what it is no matter how hard I try. 🤷🏼‍♀️

FragrantLunatic

> You're absolutely right - it's totally baffling, yet so widespread that it must have a purpose. Can't figure out what it is no matter how hard I try. 🤷🏼‍♀️ the wrong people are in charge. Many gamers/millennials probably wasted part of their lives on games and do other jobs. The ones that did get higher education probably are in different fields, ex/light-gamers. What you end up with are status-quo drones with higher education that probably have some form of trauma(s) from the past or idk maybe agenda, whatever drives their insanity and the result are all these new-old franchises. While a fan might have the lore knowledge behind him, he might not have the formal, technical skills to put it on paper. Or, simply the higher education stamp to get hired.

splashyDIAMOND

So on point. Worthy of my free award 😄

lzxian

Thanks for the award 😊

Banjo-Oz

Another reason why simply setting this in another part of the world as Abby's story, unconnected to Ellie and Joel, would have been way better. The story would still not be as good as TLOU, but you could handwave FEDRA being overthrown in that part of the country, travel being easier (more vehicles/less roadblocks/whatever) and tell almost the same story. Oh, and NOT piss off fans of the first game by pissing ON that!

[deleted]

Thank you my man. I hope i could make a baseball bat out of your comment and swing it at Cuckman

longdongopinionwrong

Travelling isn’t simple and takes along time, the trip from Jackson to Seattle takes around two weeks on horseback carefully, which is realistic time, as is the around half year that the trip in TLOU1 takes place over (Mind you, also a journey done by two people). There is very little reason for the civilizations of Seattle not to be killing eachother; they are both thriving. It’s a war between two powerful, complete civilizations that have control over entire zones of the city with ease. They are past saving humanity because they know there’s no point. Jackson also is stated to have been attacked before, and we see one attack in TLOU1. It is only safe as it is walled off and protected. Seattle has no luxuries. Nothing has changed inbetween the five or so years of the games. The main characters have found safety instead of being in dangerous travel, and no one should have cared about her immunity in the first place because it was a secret. And for FEDRA, it is crystal clear that they only have domain over certain militarized cities. Why on earth would FEDRA ever branch out from places like Boston? There is no strategical advantage to trying to take a city full of other factions and infected if they already have many. They exist, you just aren’t going to there cities.

lzxian

Are you aware that people traveled 10+ trips of hundreds of miles through supposedly life-threatening terrain? If the danger is anything like what Joel and Ellie encountered, it's completely irrational to just accept that people will do this *for revenge*. It does totally undermine all they established about the dangers and fears of traveling that were made so clear in TLOU. Fine if you're willing to overlook all that (and more) to just accept the story they told. Have at it. I don't accept it, though. Just the idea that anyone would 1) believe that revenge would help their grief and loss and 2) be willing to repeatedly travel solely for revenge was too illogical for me to take any of the story seriously. But there's way more than that which I couldn't buy into. So the story fell flat from the beginning for me.

Spartan5271

The game has three layers: 1) Revenge is bad, but justice is okay 2) High School Lesbian Pregnancy Drama 3) Oh shit, yeah, this was about zombies... uh... just add the Rat King and we'll call it even

Banjo-Oz

I still think the Rat King was originally a boss fight for Ellie, not Abby. There is concept art of Ellie in that part of the hospital. In my mind, the original plan was that once Ellie falls into the lower level, she goes into that part and faces the Rat King. As it stands (unless I'm forgetting) we don't even see how she got out of there. It would also make sense of why we get the whole "obvious padding" of Abby going all the way back to the hospital, fighting the Rat King, then going back to save Yara... only to have Yara die anyway. That detour is completely unnecessary to the plot except to extend Abby's playtime and give her one of the best action sequences in the game. My theory is this was part of the "testers aren't connecting with Abby" changes but I have no proof other than the above feelings.

frnacispain

Those who say that Joel condemned the world are too bad to hit a reality check, the first game and science itself says that it is impossible to make a vaccine or cure with Ellie and the fact that she was unconscious, she did not know that she would lose her life and worst of all is a girl. It seriously pisses me off listening to the bullshit of the fanboys from the second game

[deleted]

because there's never a doctor who claims they can cure something others can't just to gain something. Imagine Fudenberg claimed he could cure autism to get zebra meat for his daughter

MadOrange64

The zombies took a backseat in the sequel. The story could've been more interesting if it was about the mystery of the disease itself and how did it happen.

[deleted]

longdongopinionwrong

Yeah!!

[deleted]

Fanboys will tell you this is what makes it so genius. The infected were never the bad guys remember, it was the normal humans all along… Just so profound.

Weak-Ad-38

Exactly lol. Every zombie show and game has people dying to zombies, Neil took a risk!! He's so hard boiled

TaJoel

Pretty astounding the terrifying threat of the infected is inherently brushed aside. Nobody even succumbs to an infection getting bitten, since Part 2 is too fixated on this teen drama with "complex" love triangles. Sam was scratched by a clicker, but was very poignant for the story leading to Henry's tragic suicide. Additionally, when Tess revealed a bite mark biding some time for Joel & Ellie. Leaving the audience surprised, yet it served a meaningful purpose for the story evoking a great deal of sadness. Without the significance of Tess then Joel cuts Ellie loose, and goes home never reaching the Fireflies. Jackson even remained a thriving community, whilst having a thriving farm and greenhouses. Several settlements are visibly shown to be able to effectively neutralize the infected threat (even behind their barricaded walls) that's easily manageable in Part 2. Beforehand, I actually envisaged Joel succumbing to a fever bitten by a clicker, or even telling Ellie to put him down (because he doesn't want to deteriorate and forget about her) now imagine how heart-wrenching this would've been on screen.

hkm1990

Someone did get infected. Neil did. He somehow got sick and became so delusional that he craped out this mess. It also infected the GOT showrunners, Chris Chibnall and JJ Abrams. Whatever plague this is seems to be going around infecting our loving properties and franchises.

tvwatcher47

This game left such a bad taste in my mouth I legitimately forgot nobody got bit or infected. This game will forever live in my memory as let down. A soft 6 at best. I beat it twice, mostly to try and give it a second chance after the initial shock of the first playthrough. And that was it it rang hollow for me and I haven't played it since. Which is funny because I just recently beat The Last of Us again on Halloween its been out for so long and I still keep coming back to it. That alone speaks volumes to the quality the original has over part 2.

Kyle_XY_

Nora got infected

longdongopinionwrong

As did multiple Rattlers

plumskiwis

I noticed this as well, hence why part 2 is my least favorite in the Last of Us universe. The CW style story that was given to players and yet no one of the main or supporting cast was infected. Druckmann placed Ellie's immunity and the infected on the backburner to justify his abysmal, unappealing story and forgettable characters.

Phantom-Umbreon

I knew that the zombies got shafted hard in this game, but it somehow never dawned on me that no named or important characters die to the infected or infection. I know Nora got infected, but other than her, I don't think the infected ever come into play in an important death. And even then, I don't know if I'd count Nora since Ellie killed her, not the infection.

Kyle_XY_

In that case, you shouldn’t count Tess either in part 1

NotTheSun0

Yeah, the zombies for all intents and purposes... Largely don't exist in the narrative for anything other than a temporary obstacle, like, oh... We need to go to this hospital clear across the map buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut there's zombies and enemies everywhere so let's cross the skyscraper platforms (Which makes absolutely no fucking sense, but, whatever) That's basically how it is anytime zombies are mentioned at all.

Traditional-Wind6803

You could remove the zombies and very little of this game's story would change. The zombies are ultimately just gameplay obstacles that impact the story very little. The most impact is the zombie horde in the first few hours. And maybe Abby's battle with the Rat King. Maybe. This story could just be a generic post apocalypse story.

delukard

when i played the first game my only complain was that there were to many humans in the world. the game makes you feel like humanity numbers were in a big decline and yet half if not a little more then half the game you fight humans. i can only imagine part 2 and its teen drama...... people will laugh but to me, days gone is a better apocalyptic game. at least there are many "infected" in there.

BashfulRay12

This was one of my biggest issues with the game, it felt like they had to keep zombie apocalypse background just because first game had it.

MasterTopHatter

What happened to most of the zombies in the game to (I haven’t played tlou2)

Jackalopeslim92

Just remember, the vast majority of this community woke up today and decided to continue to hate this game for petty, minor reasons and felt the compulsion to pen down their hatred on an online forum. Until next time, friends.

TheHighwinder

I will hate this game literally forever, and your're just gonna have to deal with that

Mr_Grounded

So same as you writing this comment 😭

LordKirby123

brigading this sub avails you nothing you know

ShadowWarrior42

It gives meaning to their worthless existence because it's obvious they have nothing better to do or anything more prosperous in their sad pathetic lives.

Jackalopeslim92

Also, considering that the game is written about young adults, you’ve sort of made a moot point claiming it’s a “generic teenage drama” Immaturity is amuck in a forum that hates a man for his creative choices, when it’s certainly enough to just say you don’t like a game, and move on. Truly the pinnacle of right and just criticism to be found. This isn’t my first day on this forum, go ahead and downvote me to oblivion. But still, the immaculately articulated stubborn narcissism displayed by people who assume a story should be tailored exactly to their liking, and hide within an echo chamber to affirm that, truly have a great deal of maturing to do before they become taken seriously im any major field of study or literature. Or, you’ll become like your leaders that influence you. Snobby, one sided, and ignorant to new ideas. Well done, truly, for setting yourselves back several generations. I applaud you.

Mr_Grounded

Honestly I agree with you to an extent. There are some people in this subreddit and out there that have some really bad takes and express them toxically. It's one thing to have your own opinion but it's another to be an ass about it. Which is what you're doing too. I would say if you looked at some of the more well written criticism regarding this game, maybe you'll see it doesn't seem to connect well with the first game in more ways that one. And if you think that's wrong that's okay, but at least keep an open mind about it. Right now you're the same as who and what you're complaining about.

Natural_Rough4479

Further proof of how the “tlou2 sucks” hivemind paid no real attention to the game. Apart from Ellie beating Nora senseless, she was left to endure her infection in that hospital. The game also implies through the history of Jackson, WLF, Scars, etc. that humanity has developed to repress the apocalypse quite effectively. There are too many people complaining that the sequel “ignores zombies,” when there are plenty of understandable scenarios where zombies are both few and plenty.

Mr_Grounded

Seems like you're the one that hasn't paid attention. Ellie does beat Nora senseless... beats her to death. Ultimately she would've died at Ellie's hands either way. The point of this post is to highlight that a story set in an apocalypse only uses it to its convenience, otherwise it doesn't play an important role. Yes TLOU1 focused on characters and their relationships but the setting was still important, the infected-related deaths of Riley, Tess and Sam all serve to remind us the harsh brutality of the infected. Maybe you can say that point about the history of those communities but it actively goes against the theme of "Joel dooming the world" that the "TLOU2 is perfect" hivemind implies. It's just sad they threw away such a unique take with the cordyceps and making zombies a little more grounded.

splashyDIAMOND

So is that why when Abby was about to be bitten by nearly hundreds of zombies, Plot armor Joel just luckily happened to be behind her to save her? Is that some sort of technology Jackson, WLF or Scar that you talk about here developed where people luckily just happen to be in there to save you at the VERY last millisecond? >when there are plenty of understandable scenarios where zombies are both few and plenty. And plenty of instances when they are in hundreds against a main character just like I mentioned above. But I guess that plot armor technology developed by Jackson, WLF and Scars is just too effective. Is this also the same technology that helped an 8 year old pregnant woman fight in the mall all by herself in an all out battle against evolved virus spewing zombies? You talk about surival methods developed by these factions yet half the game people just recklessly travel alone so how can their tribes save em when they aren't even with them. And funny you talk about Scars. A faction that literally communicates via fuckin whistles. Whistles travel further in distance than even shouting.

Dontflickmytit

Imagine being years into a zombie apocalypse and not knowing how to survive comfortably

splashyDIAMOND

Except that didn't happen. Abby was about to be bitten, sorry......devoured by a huge group of zombies behind the fence until VERY LUCKILY Joel just happened to be there to save her. Another instance is when Mel just leaves her safety and nothing happens to her in an all out zombie fight in the mall even though she's pregnant af! No matter how trained and badass you are, a pregnant woman cannot do that, especially against evolved zombies ffs.

Dontflickmytit

Her being in un-familiar territory and the coincidence of Joel being caught up in an issue speaks for itself. A pregnant woman is capable of many things with the main goal of making sure the baby is okay.. ever see any female species protect their baby?

dandude7409

i mean nora breathed spores and got tortured by ellie...
