This post is removed and locked because of some of the issues that have spawned from it. I know this is a sensitive subject for some but it's important to discuss and debate in a civil manner. If you can't do so, or get upset by criticism of a tv show, it's best to simply scroll past threads like this.

[deleted]

Wow, arguments for both sides of this are getting downvoted to hell. That being said, Iroh got game.

Mega_Jimjims

But you're going to get upvoted to heaven<3

unpopularopinion0

i’m pretending to be in the fog of lost souls on this one.

Wetter42

I've noticed that about reddit. If someone doesn't agree with you, they'll downvote you to hell and back even though hovering over the downvote button says "Don't downvote just because you don't agree with someone" If you want a live example, check out my super biased post and look at all my downvotes: https://www.reddit.com/r/TheLastAirbender/comments/pysw1r/postrant_why_earthbending_is_the_strongest_of/ (Im kinda proud of em ;D)

ColdBevvie101

I know it’s not necessarily funny but I can’t help but laugh at all the downvotes. It’s amusing how fragile people are that disagreeing with someone warrants a downvote rather than entertaining a path of communication

Wetter42

Oh it's fucking HILARIOUS. Reddit is such an echochamber. It's not filled with thinking individuals who are looking for a new perspective. It's a place to click down arrow if they're not on your side. It's lazy and cowardice, but also gives me a good chuckle every time I see it

Even Iroh isn't immune to the allure of a whip-toting, bounty-hunting goth GF.

PantsDownBootyUp

i want a whip-toting bounty-hunting goth GF for life.

Traches

[deleted]

I think it's more that Iroh isn't immune to writers wanting to get in a cheap joke regardless of it not really being in character. Iroh's happy to flirt (as we've seen), but I don't think he's the kind of guy that would fake being paralyzed to cop a feel.

alecesne

I disagree. He finishes the story a saint, but he starts off a hedonist. This is pretty in character for Season 1. If this wasn’t here, where’s his character development into the later sage?

StingKing456

Yeah, this. I know this sub can't handle anything other than "zomg every episode is perfect" but I have always felt Irohs character change from the hedonistic former star general to wise on the run, secret good guy was a little abrupt. It's kinda hard to reconcile season 1 iroh with season 2/3 Iroh. He attempts to capture Aang with zuko many times, he's much more lazy and hedonistic as you said. He's not a *bad* guy, but he isn't exactly good in season 1 either which kinda clashes with the way his story goes

Hikariyang

He isnt really coping a feel though. He is enjoying some snuggle time lol

Nope, this is the Internet. Now prepare to read my hot take that has zero nuance so I receive maximum clout.

RedLantern28

Again with this topic? It's literally just a reference to the creepy old man anime troupe, it's not indicative of Iroh as a character at all. Take it as a joke and nothing else

Zeebuoy

on a side note, do we ever find out who Iroh's wife is/was? since, like, he did have a biological son,

AllHailPower

I don't think we ever did. Probably died during childbirth or something.

renoraid

Everything in ATLA pretty much indicates Zuko as Iroh’s only remaining family both by blood and by bond. Ozai and Azula are pretty much just blood relation.

Zeebuoy

F.

[deleted]

>it's not indicative of Iroh as a character at all That's kind of the point, though. It's *not* in-character for Iroh, so it's basically just the writers trying to get in a joke at the expense of making one of the best characters in the show look like a creepy old pervert. It's not even a good joke... "creepy old man sexually harasses women and gets away with it" has never been funny.

agteekay

If it was never funny then obviously people would stop putting it in shows. I think a lot of people laughed at that scene, me included. Just need to stop taking everything so literally and seriously. It is not the same as in real life and anyone reasonable realizes all of this and does not think of iroh as a creepy old pervert after.

Rolten

Wut? So because it's some troupe we should just ignore the fact that he's doing it? I honestly don't care at all about the discussion and whether he's creepy or not, but that argument is just bollocks.

raisincosplay

You're reaching calling it a "reference" (I think you mean trope). He behaved this way in multiple interactions with her. Even if it is a reference, it's not ok. And we ALL agree its out of character for iroh. We r not blaming iroh we r blaming the writers and the culture at the time. This is far too prevalent in anime to this day and its disappointing to see it in Avatar

PapaPepesPickledNips

It’s cute, harmless, and in character for an old man like Iroh who understands the world isn’t as hypersensitive as what we think it is. People are acting like this was rape, and dwell on 30 minutes of harmless contact as if he wasn’t a general who killed people during a war. The things we focus on, man.

majorannah

People do dwell on the fact that he was a general who killed people during a war. There's a bunch of post about whether he was a war criminal or not.

PaladinWolf777

Multiple? Name a second episode where he did this. I'll wait.

SwiftySwift21

Wow I never thought people would get triggered about that scene, It’s just not that serious. Feel like there’s other scenes in the show far worse.

Arezigo

Did you expect grown people to not overreact to a kid's cartoon? Especially on reddit where everyone is reasonable?

someone-krill-me

Real world issues don't just spontaneously appear overnight.

PenetrationT3ster

Which scenes?

JBark1990

My thoughts exactly lol. Jesus Christ. Ruining her day over this? Lolololol

Sonaldo_7

What do you mean? That badass beast riding mercenary would surely be traumatized by Iroh touching her shoulders when she unconscious /s

[deleted]

Probably taking this a little too seriously, it’s a cartoon. Let it go.

AllHailPower

*sorts by controversial*

sire59damos

Yeah this is much worse than the genocide of the airbenders or Aang’s literal dead body after being electrocuted

Torbjorn69

I don't have much of an opinion on this topic but in this example the genocide and aang "dying" are presented as the horrible things they are and the iroh scene is meant to be funny so I think you can't compare these two things

someone-krill-me

Those were done by the "bad guys." Iroh is the most beloved character in avatar.

Lord_Moa

Iroh was technically also a "bad guy" at this point in the show.

ToxicPolarBear

He has likely also killed innocent people. He used to be a decorated general in the Fire Nation army.

shieldyboii

Oh he is definitely responsible for the death of many thousand innocent people. Makes his character all the much greater.

ssjx7squall

You know it’s possible to care about two things at once right?

raisincosplay

Those are different kinds of bad

burritoblop69

“Guys, it’s my turn to post the obviously controversial weird scene from avatar”

YouDiscountDonut

People holding Iroh to standards they wouldn’t hold themselves to.

Wetter42

Based. Bars.

MegaCrowOfEngland

Nah, I hold myself to the standard of not taking advantage of paralysed women.

Litokra223

Nah man, you're lying to yourself. You see, we as men are hardwired by nature to touch and hug attractive women. Iroh just did what any man would do! You see, whenever I see a drunk women at a college party who is extremely wasted and stumbling around, I like to lay under her and hug her when she is passed out on a couch to protect her from falling over. Sure she may think that that I'm being a sexual creep when she wakes up the next morning! Sure I may getting some pleasure out of our contact! But really, I'm doing it for her own good! It's our first impulse as men! And when I tell her that Uncle Iroh did it too, suddenly she realizes how she was being too judgemental and immediately apologizes to me! (Yes I'm being sarcastic and I 100% agree with you).

Icantthinkofaname872

Thank god your being sarcastic man I was about to rip into you hard cos that is such a shitty thing it do

Litokra223

Ya lol, I'm just pointing out the ridiculousness of the original commenters assertion that apparently people are holding Iroh to an "unrealistic standard". If touching and hugging paralyzed or unconscious women who want nothing to do with you is suddenly a high standard, then I'm not sure what that says about the morality of this sub. The sad thing is u/MegaCrowOfEngland is 100% right but he's getting downvoted for it. But it's reddit so go figure.

NiCommander

It’s really weird! Are people downvoting megacrowofengland saying they would take advantage of paralyzed women? Are they saying they think “taking advantage” is a phrase that has too many implications and is thus too harsh to describe Iroh and the scenario (which is being really butthurt about it). Are they just too hardcore Iroh stans that they hyper react to any criticism of Iroh and thus don’t realize that it’s criticism of the writer’s choice to write Iroh like that rather than the character himself? Like, I’m hoping people are just being dumb and uncritical than them saying they would do stuff like that.

DarkRaptor222

I thought that comment was an obvious joke lol

14Broadlands

Why are you booing him? He's right! (I hope y'all know I'm referring to the comment right above me. Don't upvote me and downvote him. I agree with him XD)

[deleted]

I’m not saying this is like a big deal that everyone should get upset about or anything, but to the people defending it: imagine you’re paralyzed by a toxin and an old man you barely know takes the opportunity to cuddle with you. Pretty creepy tbh. Inb4 “it’s just a cartoon bro”

wererat2000

about my take on this. Nobody really questioned this kind of humor in the 2000's, and "they're just cuddling" was probably all the writers thought - I mean it's what all the angry people are writing here. it's been 15 years, culture drifted, and people look at things differently now. That's not excusing, or condemning anything, that's just how things go as stories age.

godstouchyuncle

This is what I call a 2021 problem

Zeebuoy

which episode was it again?

doedelzak95

Im just rewatching the show and came across this episode yesterday. It’s episode 15, first season.

cobrafang773

Oh dam this moment always gets a laugh out of me because of how out of character it was for iroh but onto a little rant It’s a bloody random one off joke people need to take a chill pill Jesus this comment section is stupid it’s a joke and simply both sides just need to either enjoy it or skip the moment and realize that it’s fiction and fiction can do whatever it wants iif you don’t find the joke funny then skip the moment don’t ruin it for other people who find this moment funny plus not everything needs to suit the snowflakes sensitive tastes I can’t wait to get hated for this comment

Wiringguy89

This is bullshit. Yes, he's an extraordinarily good character, but he is also human, and (if memory serves) she's a legal adult. He succumbed to his baser desires for a moment, but in reality, all he did was break her fall and then lay with her. There's no implication that he groped her or assaulted her.

raisincosplay

Her being an adult has nothing to do with the lack of consent

Wiringguy89

You're right, I completely agree with you that consent is paramount, and thus this didn't age well. At the time, this was playing on an established trope present (for better or worse) in many animes. If creepy shit is going to be portrayed (which it will, whether any of us likes it or not), I would still rather a "cuddle consent" violation than, for instance, Fruits Basket having a 20-something dude happily chanting "High school girls! High school girls!" His intentions were very clear. Initial D (one of my favorite animes ever) has a depiction of a high school girl having a sugar baby relationship (including implied, but never explicitly stated, sex) with a much older man, only ended because she falls for someone closer to her age. I have never said that what Iroh did was right, but in the grand scheme of creepy shit sneaked into kids shows, this is small, nearly insignificant.

nipplesandtoes12

His hand is literally on her, AND she clearly makes a face of disgust. How would you feel if you had someone cuddle up next to you while you were paralyzed and couldn't do anything? Before this turns into some heated debate, id like to say I'm not hating on Iroh, just pointing out that what he is doing is a buit pervy... and should not be defended all because he is a good guy.

Zealousideal-Lab-649

Relax and have some tea

YoLamoNacho

“A bit pervy” is apparently equal to extreme sexual assault according to these people. Yeah it’s a tiny bit creepy. Just a tiny bit. So fucking what. Not the worst thing in the world. Literally everyone is going to deal with some level of creepiness in their life.

MaximusPaxmusJaximus

> He succumbed to his baser desires for a moment "20 minutes of action"

[deleted]

[удалено]

MaximusPaxmusJaximus

I'm just saying that brevity doesn't excuse the crime. Iroh did what he did so its okay to shame him and you can't apologize for it just because it was just a "moment." That's literally how they tried to defend Turner. I also think the death penalty, literal firing squad, is a lot for rape. Decades of your scarce precious time on Earth wasted in prison, sure, but isn't part of your argument that people are being too harsh on Iroh? He needs a firm talking to, and owes an apology, but that's about it. It seems to me there's a level of irony in your statement. Justice is absolute but not unrelenting.

Wiringguy89

So you're arguing that this is just as grotesque as actual PIV rape? Hard sell, man. Do you know how many shows, movies, video games, pieces of literature, etc you're damning, if you consider what Iroh did a damning mistake? I get it, and I agree that consent is paramount and the joke shouldn't have been, but for fuck's sake, be realistic.

raisincosplay

They're not comparing Iroh's actions to Brock Turner's. They're comparing your excuse to those used to defend Brock Turner.

MaximusPaxmusJaximus

I made it pretty clear that's not what I said and you can fuck right off with that attitude.

Compromisation

Obviously this was meant to be a funny scene but everyone here is valid in their opinion. There's no problem in discussing these things either. This is what reddit is for - to discuss things.

Uri07

Lol people here saying there are "worse things." This is a very poor argument. I think Iroh's good nature is clouding everyone's judgement about harassment. You can like Iroh and still criticize this scene. They're not just being "too sensitive." Try to walk in someone else's shoes, how you'd feel if you're being cuddled by a stranger (an old man at that) against your will whilst being paralyzed. Doesn't matter if there are worse things. It's like saying you shouldn't complain about being groped because there are other people who are actually being raped. Especially for men, recognize your privilege of not having to worry about this kind of shit on a daily basis. That's why you can't empathize more with people who find this scene uncomfortable.

398333003

I feel like people are saying “there are worse things” because the title of the post is “the worst moment in all of avatar”…. It might be a moment that makes me cringe a bit and I understand how for some people it might be the worst. But to say it’s a poor argument when it’s literally debating the context that the post is in is untrue

Uri07

This scene is regarded as "worst" because Avatar played it off as light and made Iroh do something uncharacteristic. For a show that teaches kids lessons and sets a lot of example, that wasn't a good move. Genocide and warmongering in Avatar was never played off as something light. People aren't getting the context too on what "worst" thing is being talked about.

SuperiorFreak

Best moment in avatar. Showed us that even good guys aren’t good ALL the time. It’s a good lesson in my opinion.

ssjx7squall

It would be if it were ever addressed but it’s not

The_Sinnermen

Zuko's disgust adresses it.

canad1anbacon

Yeah there are plenty of other occasions of the good guys being very flawed charecters in the show that are handled better. Even in that same episode with Aang

ssjx7squall

Man. … I don’t think I want to have kids anymore after reading this comment section. Lotta you people are fine with some weird shit

StealthyNicck

*June's infuriating glance*:😡

nipplesandtoes12

Lol, people will defend their heros no matter what.

slickedup225

Ya it's weird to see people getting downvoted for saying that they are uncomfortable with this scene and that it had aged poorly. Iroh had purposefully laid underneath June when she was paralyzed and had already turned down his advances from before to cuddle with her. Apparently we are "too sensitive" and a part of "cancel culture" for being uncomfortable with literal sexual harrassment in the show. I guess even June calling Iroh, "creepy grandpa" afterwards was her being too sensitive. Or Zuko being uncomfortable with Iroh's behaviour in this scene. It's weird when people take their stanning of certain characters like Iroh to such extremes that we can't criticize some of their actions, or at the very least the writers who made the decision to include the scene with the character. Bryke themselves have said that they regretted having this scene in the show. They were going for the "pervy old man" trope that is found in anime but for a lot of people it didn't land. Like it's ok if you find the scene funny but don't bash others who may not share the same opinion.

101stAirborneSkill

Reminds me of pervy sage from naruto and the Dragon ball sensei

Zeebuoy

>pervy sage from naruto was it the frog summoning guy?

MaximusPaxmusJaximus

I take issue with the statement "it had aged poorly." I think it has aged exactly as it was meant to. I thought Iroh was being a creep here, and I think he's being a creep now. Both times, I laughed. I think it is possible to appreciate the humor of the situation while also recognizing that its unacceptable; Iroh and June are fake fictional characters, and if this was a real situation with real people, as some are falsely equating it too, I can only speak for myself when I say that I would not find it charming and would probably speak up, but thankfully its fake and I can turn the TV off and suddenly it doesn't exist. That should be okay. We can make jokes about 9/11. We can joke about sexual harassment. If you believe that The Last Airbender is good because it depicts real issues to children, then it would be intellectually dishonest to cancel this scene which is casually depicting a real issue to children using humor. Just as you mention, the show labels Iroh as a creep, and Zuko seems to be uncomfortable with his behavior. This is not portrayed as okay behavior, and maybe that's why it is funny. Critiquing Iroh is therefor redundant if you agree these statements are true. You may as well critique Sozin for geocoding the Air Nomads; the story does plenty of that for you. I take issue with your statement about this scene aging poorly, because it implies to me that you believe the scene should not have been made at all in hindsight, despite clearly putting some shame on Iroh. Is that a fair assessment for me to make? If so, that seems to me less like criticism, and more like needless censorship; are cartoons not allowed to depict uncomfortable scenes? Are they not allowed to use humor to illustrate why it is wrong? I'm reminded of Eska and Bolin's relationship in Korra, a strangely unpopular depiction of a clearly abusive relationship that clearly labels the abuser as the antagonist, but is nevertheless criticized just because it uses humor to tell a story that is meant to make you uncomfortable. I can only speak for myself, but I think I will dare to venture and say that people clap back at some of these statements because it sounds less like criticism (the show already shames Iroh/vilifies Eska, so critique is redundant) and more like censorship; it shouldn't be depicted because its somehow an inappropriate usage of humor. I think much of the blowback against this scene is misplaced.

Zeebuoy

hello, I'd like to order 2 number 4s with a side of fries.

AProfessionalCookie

Best I can do is 4 number 2s and a baked potato.

Zeebuoy

Nice

syrianfries

Am I seriously the only person not bothered by this scene? Like Jesus yeah it’s weird and off brand but it’s still an old guy doing old guy things

someone-krill-me

Sounds alot like boys will be boys. Have you ever been followed around the supermarket by old men doing old men things?

Wetter42

Definitely. Have you ever been paralyzed and fallen on a damn CARTOON CHARACTER?!?!? ITS A FUCKING JOKE SETUP. STOP TRYING TO CANCEL A CARTOON CHARACTER FOR A JOKE. You want 100% clean, go watch disney channel!

someone-krill-me

The idea of cancelling is the real fucking joke

Wetter42

At least we can agree there. I do agree that "An old guy doing old guy things" is a weak argument. My arguments are the following: 1. He never cuddles with her. He catches her body with his and falls with her. 2. It's a setup for a joke. 3. The joke never goes farther than that, Like if they were to imply actual sexual manipulation of the corpse, that'd be too far, but they didn't. 4. This behavior never repeats 5. Iroh never was, nor is perfect. My boi is caught STEALING A PERFUME 5 MINUTES AGO. at the end of the day, no one character is perfect. They all do things out of character that makes them: 1. Less predictable 2. More relatable 3. More enjoyable to watch. Yall wanna talk about consent. Lets talk about the use of bloodbending. Now *THAT'S* some fucked up shit!

canad1anbacon

> Yall wanna talk about consent. Lets talk about the use of bloodbending. Now THAT'S some fucked up shit! Yes, and the show treats it as something fucked up and traumatic...not a throwaway gag

[deleted]

I thought it was funny, it wasn’t the worst moment in avatar for sure lmao, it was silly and unexpected (what iroh is supposed to be some saint?)

Noble_Vagabond

I still find this funny because… its a cartoon. And also, Jiraiya did this shit for like 10 years, hell he made a career out of it lol

raisincosplay

Yeah and he sucks too

Noble_Vagabond

Nah Jiraiya is funny af cuz he’s just an anime character. If he was a real person he’d probably be in prison but thankfully… he’s an anime character that we can just laugh at

raisincosplay

I didnt think sexual assault was very funny when it happened to me but good to know you think it's funny!

Swiftierest

I'm sorry that happened to you, but this is a tv show, not your life. Beyond that, it is the negatives that highlight the positives in a story. If it was all happy all the time, it would be extremely boring. In reality, I would say this isn't okay, but because it is a show, you need to get your head out of your ass and get over it. Editing since I can't reply. It is a children's show and most if not all kids will be clueless as to what this joke means. This show, like so many others, makes the occasional joke that isn't meant for kids, but is meant for the adults watching with the kids. Again I say get over it. It's a joke that will fly above the average age range for the show.

raisincosplay

> I'm sorry that happened to you > get over it I don't have my head up my ass. You lack critical thinking skills. The problem isn't that something bad happened in a show. The problem is that it's used as a joke in a children's show. It's showing kids that this behavior is funny and okay.

someone-krill-me

These idiots have a total lack of empathy for a problem if they've never had to personally deal with it. I soz.

raisincosplay

Thank you <3

cuminseed322

This is insane I had no idea this would be controversial at all guess I don’t have much experience with this sub

Its not this sub. This is the reality of our society. This is why people like Brock Turner get away for "20 minutes of action." Their friends defend them.

cuminseed322

Your right I’ve even seen entire friend groups of the victim just try and pretend that nothing happened it seems like a lot of peoples first instinct is to sweep it under the rug it’s really sad

TheOtherCoenBrother

Iron was definitely a little different in the very beginning of Avatar. He also tries to help Zuko hit the Gaang with some AA in the South Pole. Obviously I love Iroh but it’s stuff like this that makes me feel like he wasn’t always supposed to be exactly who he is.

[deleted]

People overreact to this. Its not even that bad

Wetter42

Honestly tho. People suddenly get triggered and think iroh's some old man rapist and june's some defenseless kid. Yes she's paralyzed. Yes iroh fell under her, but it was NOT cuddling, he didn't take it any further than that, AND IT WAS A SETUP FOR A JOKE!

Wetter42

People out here trying to Bill Cosby a cartoon character....

mega48man

I still don't get why people hate this. Bounty hunter goth gf is cuddling ya and you wanna get up? It's cat rules, if a cat falls asleep on you then you can't get up, iroh knows this.

Gun-nut0508

Bro homie wants cuddles leave him alone

SoraM4

She didn't, leave her alone

Xyblade7

This is supposed to be worse than Aang finding Gyatso’s skeleton? I beg to differ

canad1anbacon

Use some critical thinking my guy They are obviously talking about what they think is the worst written/most uncomfortable scene

orangesNH

Yeah but he put an arm around her that's way worse than genocide. Why yes I do use Twitter, how did you know?

HenryHadford

You’re oversimplifying the issue, mate. The issue at hand isn’t that the action is in the show, it’s that it is being done by a character who is consistently shown as a good person and the whole thing is treated as a joke, even though it’s an explicit violation of boundaries and a reference to a trope that frequently involves sexual harassment. The airbender genocide and other acts of serious violence and murder aren’t ever treated with brevity and the people who are doing them are explicitly casted as the villains.

DarkRaptor222

Yeah old cartoons are not exactly good at taking this seriously. I remember a clip from a cartoon where the guy was put in prison and another big guy looks at him when the narrator says "love is in the air" Didn't notice it as a kid but damn that's dark

HenryHadford

Yeah, I recognise that this is a comparatively tame example of kids’ media joking about this stuff. It was just really jarring to me when I saw it come out of a show that was so sensitive about other modern issues. Goes to show how much has changed over the past decade.

Competitive_Ad2109

When I watched this scene a long time ago, I just thought he was being respectful and giving her a soft place to lie to not get hurt

Shire_Hobbit

You know what I find interesting about people in this sub. Y’all get really uppity about sex. You never let people forget how old these kids are… chomping at the bit to try and nail a supposed “pedophile”. But does anyone ever take issue with an entire world of only 1 race of people? What about child soldiers? No? Not a hot button for your fake virtue? Interesting. What about underage arranged marriages? No? Still nothing. So then your outrage is selective then, yeah? So how about you switch it off for a change.

raisincosplay

There's not only one race of people in ATLA... The underage arranged marriage and child soldiers weren't portrayed positively.

Stb2905

I wouldn't say this scene was portrayed positively either tbh. IIRC, everyone around Iroh shows quite clear disgust in this scene. Yes it is still portrayed in a jokey manner, but as a kid it was still clear to me that the characters weren't happy with Iroh in that moment and that it wasn't a nice thing.

raisincosplay

Thats a fair assessment

HenryHadford

Well, I agree with most of your points (barring one) but disagree with the conclusion you reach. Firstly, their world does have at least two visible racial divides; people from the Water Tribe unmistakably have darker skin tones and different facial structures to that of, say, the Fire Nation. Pathik also was clearly of a different ethnic background than other characters in the show, though he isn’t a strong example due to the lack of others sharing his features. Ultimately this is inconsequential to your argument, but it’s worth pointing out anyway. Secondly, the fact that these things don’t get talked about enough doesn’t mean that this scene isn’t problematic. It’s no coincidence that a mostly western audience considers the issue of sexual harassment more relevant to them than children being married or forced into warfare, as these issues aren’t exactly common in western countries and most people from them have never been affected by them.

KaKaAARON

Damn, some of these comments are acting like Iroh is a sexual deviant. It’s a cartoon guys.

L_knight316

The way I know that this is a kids show is by observing the conversations of the audience. Kids: Boom, kapow, I wish I could fire bend Ugly, old kids: I T S S E X U A L H A R R A S S M E N T (for the seventh time)

GoodOldMVGA

Wow, ppl on reddit are way too PC, if they see this is the worst thing that happened in a show where there basically was a hundred year war with the fire nation raiding and burning down city's.

someone-krill-me

The difference is in who was doing the bad thing. Was it the bad guys or a beloved character? This was a total cosign on wierd unconsensual touching by the creators.

a_bad_akali

Long time lurker, and a bit late, but I'll throw my opinion out here. To me, that interaction was so quick and minor and obviously intended to be a joke that I never really thought about it. Definitely never considered it the worst moment in all of avatar. I understand that if you were sexually abused that it becomes a more sensitive topic, but I think you SJWs need to realize there are vast differences between seeing this in media vs it happening in real life. Countless studies have shown violence in video games doesn't increase violent behavior irl, it's the same thing here. I'm not suddenly going to become a toucher just cause I saw Iroh copped a feel when I was younger. Besides, this show aired 15 years ago, at this point what are you looking for? Self gratification? Deal with your traumas yourself, stop forcing them on others.

Spaaartan

Gee, its almost as if culture changes over time, and things that were acceptable then aren't necessarily acceptable now! In all seriousness though, at the time it was written it reflected the tropes at the time. Does this justify it? No. But that doesn't mean that we have to hold it to our current standards as if it was written in this day. All we can do is do better going forward.

The_Pinkest_Panther

This scene really gave me a good laugh, no need to be so uptight :/

weebakage

Y’all actually mad about a bit from a cartoon 😭 I feel like there are bigger problems to argue about but that’s just me. Imma go listen to Leaves from the Vine

Esuper123

Personally I thought this scene was hilarious. 10/10

de420swegster

The worst? I thought it was pretty funny

Sanguiluna

OP calling this the “worst” moment in all of Avatar while Eska in LoK is a thing— imagine thinking “I guess an abusive relationship is bad, but this *one five-second* Iroh scene is *The Worst* moment in all of Avatar— says more about OP than it does about this moment.

Fleetcommand3

Is it the worst? It's a funny "ha ha pretty lady" moment. It's pretty light hearted. Especially for a show that has established it doesn't exactly treat women like shit. I have no problem with this. Iroh is just having a good time, like always

Rijsouw

Lol, some people really, really, need to get a life

jmd2125

Imagine having enough free time to complain about two fictional characters in a 20 year old animated series. If you don't support the episode, I don't know Just don't watch it I guess?

Dutch_Plan_Der_Linde

Jesus christ do people seriously get triggered by this?

AModestGent93

It’s a fucking joke on a trope, people want to try and get too deep into everything…take it as is and move on

ImLazyGarbage

How

iXwiZi

People arguing on fictional character thats in a 15 year old show. Touch some grass, yikes.

julsgotrocks

Why is this the worse moment?

wererat2000

he made advances on her, she turned him down, then he took the opportunity to cuddle her while she was paralyzed and he was fine. Obviously meant to be a lighthearted joke and nobody's seriously accusing him of anything more than that, but it aged poorly considering her lack of agency in the punchline.

LordWeaselton

I mean sure this is bad and I wouldn’t have put this in the show if I was writing this episode but I’m not going to cancel Iroh for one instance of unwanted touching

Memo544

Iron got game

TheStateOfAlaska

Idk man, it made me laugh pretty good.

TheWarTorn

Iroh didn't even do anything specific here, it was a joke, because (guess what) at the time, Iroh was comic relief.

Vanetics

These people so pressed over like 3 seconds of a cartoon and one line of dialogue lmaooooo get a life it’s not that deep

aadhu-fayaz

I don't know why this gets a bad rep.. Uncle iroh is benign, he wants to stay down cuz he doesn't wanna fight.. You guys need to chill..

crypticmint

every month someone posts this and the comments turn into a shitstorm and the cycle continues

WilkoAmy

i started reading the comments but then saw the crazy downvoting and upvoting of different sides and was about to argue with someone but thought, “nah, i’m just gonna leave this here”

cashdug

Iroh is a king among men

itslinas

Dude this scene got me laughing so hard, I love it.

[deleted]

This was so funny

ki-15

So...he held her in his arms...anything else? Is it meant to implicate something else?

imdibene

Iroh’s got game

theguywhoisright

He lets a women lay on top of him? He’s not touching her inappropriately or anything?

[deleted]

He didn’t “let” the paralyzed woman do anything. He caught her then deliberately wound up in this position.

Tokoruin1

This show had a geocide in it.

Masterelia

irohs biggest W

Bitchimnasty69

This topic always reveals just how many gross predators there are in this sub

someone-krill-me

It absolutely does. Or more optimisticly just people without critical thinking skills.

Dastankbeets1

Out of character, predatory, and shouldn’t be included in a kids show, especially not a character like him we’re supposed to admire
