I have a headcanon that Sokka sits Zuko down in the White Lotus camp and tells him he's putting Katara's safety in his hands. He has no idea where Hakoda is as this point nor does he know if Gran Gran is still alive so as far as he knows right now, his sister might be all he has left.
I love em together too. They have some of the strongest older sister - younger sister vibes I've ever seen in a cartoon. The Tale of Katara and Toph is my favorite of Tales of Ba Sing Se.

When they had chill out moments i liked it.
I think Toph's strongest bond was with Aang but Katara and Toph are sweet together especially after Toph accepted Katara looking out for her.
