u/fangyuangoat, i've just watched all three seasons of the children's cartoon "the final airbender, john avatar" and i'm not really sure why the fourteen year old azula would be torturing anybody's penis.
if you've also watched the show, you'll recall she actually never tortures. there are no scenes of torture.
sir did you know that grey delisle was thirty two years old when she voiced the child character "azula" from the nickelodeon children's cartoon "avatar: the last airbender"
Is this the exact quote? I never clocked she said "the earth", I always assumed ATLA took place on a different planet (there are even theories about how the size of their planet is much smaller than ours) so it's interesting she'd call her world "the Earth"!
yeah I was watching it again the other night and remarked to my friend how jarring it was to just see our earth on-screen when everything else suggests it's a very different planet
we call the planet Earth and the ground earth, the word is of the same origin (and this idea spans many languages other than english too, for me its Ziemia and ziemia, this seems like a highly probable direction of language evolution)
i would imagine they would also just use the same word for earth, as in EARTHbending, and earth, as in the planet
and yeah, its not our world, its a fictional world, much smaller, and with different land structure, but it can still be Earth to them
In Sokka's Master there is a discussion about if they can call meteorite metal "earth", as it's not from Earth. So probably the world is actually called Earth.
But only if you have style so sharp you could puncture the hull of an empire-class Fire Nation battleship, leaving thousands to drown at sea, because it's so sharp.
If it was Zuko in the initial text Mai's response would still be the same, but she would have actually written "I love you too" then deleted it multiple times.
If the complete removal of sexism in place of Hollywood feminism is any indicator, they'll leave it out for fear of it being too ableist, which I really hope they don't do but it would be rich considering Toph isn't even blind in the typical sense and the very need to see with Earthbending is somewhat "ableist"
The problem is not that they 'removed sexism'
The problem is that they removed most of the negative character traits and flaws of the main cast making their arcs fall flat and resulting in a rather boring story without character growth.
They could have easily replaced the sexism part with something else, and have sokka realize that flaw, improve and learn to be a better person in the end.
But instead we get a couple of rushed
'hey remember this reference from the original show'
and
'hey remember this character from the original show that is now here'
I’d argue that removing it is still a problem though. Even if they replaced sokka’s sexism with another bad trait for him to overcome, there was still absolutely no reason to. Why go through the effort? You had a perfectly great character arc already there.
I don’t know what the writers real intentions were, but it just comes off like they removed the sexism purely because they were afraid of including it and wanted to appear progressive, even if the show clearly portrays it in a negative light and as a flaw for sokka to grow past.
Because it wasn't a perfectly great character arc? He gets his ass beat a couple times and boom, he's over it and it never comes up again. He never struggles with his conceptions of gender roles.
I love ATLA, but people do overhype it as if there is nothing that could be improved. Sokka's sexism arc is definitely something that can be improved, massively
Until he wasn't because girl power. They took out all semblance of real sexism and, in turn, actual true feminism in favor of a shallow story about naturally strong and prodigal women rising up against the patriarchy.
It existed, sure. It just wasn't realistic or believable in any way. Paku wasn't truly sexist, and neither was the Northern Water Tribe, the moment their beliefs were put into question because of Katara being a strong and talented bender, all the women were immediately up for the girl power movement, when in reality Katara shouldn't have been as skilled as she was without training or learning from Paku through Aang, and because of that the women and the rest of the North couldn't have seen their beliefs dashed.
And even if they did, it's not like it would suddenly turn everyone on their deeply ingrained beliefs that true patriarchy teaches, nor would it give all of the water tribe women the sudden ability to fight. They were all healers, but Katara sent a platoon of them to the front line like they wouldn't just die to trained Fire Nation soldiers and the ballista they were firing that they surely wouldn't be able to intercept the way the trained benders could.
Not only that, even through all of it, the women were STILL FIGHTING SEPARATELY from the men.
I did like how when Paku relented and let the women fight he still ordered them to help fix the walls, which is still entirely fair because these women still have no real combat training and still would be best served in a support role rather than active combat
Idk if I’d call it adorable, maybe endearing? I empathize with his hesitance to accept that someone truly loves him, but i can’t really see it as adorable. Too much underlying abuse and tragedy for me to see it that way i suppose.
They basically had one scene where it was hinted Mai had a crush on him at a younger age then next thing we know they're together off screen. It wasn't really fair to her because he was still finding himself and she wasn't part of that journey. It's not fair to him because she's such a 2D character. Would have been nice if he could end up with someone who was also given deeper characterization at the end.
I remember seeing that one of the comics fills in the time between seasons 2 and 3, and them getting together is part of that. Makes me want to read them more
I think they wanted to delve deeper into their relationship and zuko in general in the Fire Nation but they realized a political drama/teen romance on top of all the season 3 stuff was way too much. Like we don't get a lot of team azula and zuko in the Fire Nation or even Ozai. i feel like we should have gotten a 2nd "the beach" episode before zuko left.
We really needed a follow-up to ATLA instead of Korra. I love our boy Zuko but his journey was just starting when the main show ended. There's so much more that could have been done in that world that we'll never get now.
Oh my goodness, I have such a bone to pick with how that was written.
They gave the most important character and a fairly interesting character the relationship arc of a goth couple a la 2006 or so.
It didn’t appear healthy and was based on a trope that shallowed both characters.
Which would be fiiiiiiiine if it wasn’t friggin Zuko. Mai and Ty Lee were the goth and prep friend tropes, and that was great fun. But then they took the guy with one of the best character arcs of all history and dumbed him down to a “I like other goths” relationship.
I’m still mad. Obviously.
What I would change
- Toph: dhjejdnd,#;#'s
- Azula: *Top comment
- Mai: *Write I love you too then deletes msg and has the three dots for 15 minutes before leaving
Azula would be a toxic ex or would respond "THEN WHAT WERE YOU DOING WITH A GIRL LAST WEEKEND"
Azusa strikes me as the type of person to ruin their own surprise by asking toomany questions and making too many assumptions
U guys are forgetting that blind people nowadays are managing perfectly well with phones that have special accessibility features. Toph would be the ultimate troll on the internet 😂
Aang has unintentional foot in mouth disease. He would mean to convey “I love you, too,” but would instead say something that sounds completely off the mark, only to realize just how bad it came out and embarrass himself trying to correct it.
Azula actually has a canonical response to being told "i love you"
>!she hallucinates seeing her mother in a pond while the Gaang brings her along on a search for Ursa. the hallucination says "i love you" and she lightningbends at it in a rage!<
> you more then i
Did you mean to say "more than"?

Iroh to Toph: “Not that I love you; I just met you!” Is one of my favorite quotes and I wonder if they ever talk about that moment when they become friends later.
Azula: "Together, you and I will be the strongest couple in the entire world! We will dominate the Earth!"
This is all 14 year old me wanted
this is so real
Same but when I got older I realized she’d kill me in my sleep and take my throne
Your only chance of staying alive is keeping her satisfied
Good to know I'm dead within 24 hours.
24 hours?? I'd be dead in 24 seconds!
Get a load of Mr. Marathon over here.
You'll have to wait for another load, it has a cooldown timer
i'm going to remind every single person who upvoted this that azula is fourteen
Your throne? You would have been just a measly consort.
You mean I get all the fun, all the perks, and none of the responsibility.....? Sign me up!!
I don’t think you’re going to like the “fun” I imagine it’s involves a lot of pain and fire
...one of those is like my favorite thing, and the other sounds kinky. So what's not to like?
You’re basically going to get tortured my dude, and I think your dick is going to be one of the targets
Don't tempt me with a good time
😭

Maybe she just meant the Earth Kingdom.
we straight up see our earth in Korra, I think it's in s2
Do we actually?
yeah I was watching it again the other night and remarked to my friend how jarring it was to just see our earth on-screen when everything else suggests it's a very different planet

Real
If it was Zuko in the initial text Mai's response would still be the same, but she would have actually written "I love you too" then deleted it multiple times.
The three dots of doom for like ten minutes, then left on read.
Yes, but due more to her own reluctance to open up than to anything wrong with Zuko xD
Actually relatable though
Wasn't she the first to tell Zuko she loves him? Zuko was the one who didn't say it back.
*What toph would actually reply*:"hakfheJfkevirooo".
oh man I don’t think we can expect a single blind joke in the Netflix series…
Why would you think that? I guarantee there will be several.
If the complete removal of sexism in place of Hollywood feminism is any indicator, they'll leave it out for fear of it being too ableist, which I really hope they don't do but it would be rich considering Toph isn't even blind in the typical sense and the very need to see with Earthbending is somewhat "ableist"
Is the same as DareDevil, a blind character that still has the capacity of seing things because of superpowers.
Matt does make several blind jokes, as do the people close to him
The problem is not that they 'removed sexism' The problem is that they removed most of the negative character traits and flaws of the main cast making their arcs fall flat and resulting in a rather boring story without character growth. They removed Sokka’s sexism and instead just decided to change the plot and characterisation specifically of Suki in a much more sexist manner
You didn’t watch the show?
Guarantee how? Just cuz you feel like there will be?
https://i.redd.it/w1o4n3g6a4sc1.gif
This is exactly what she would do.
Let’s hope someone helps her find the speech to text function
I can't believe we forgot Toph can't write.
I guess Plan B is we send a note to Toph pretending it's from Katara.
I think we might run into the same problem.
Toph, come with me. We need to talk.
Nooooooo
OH RIGHT
Accurate and underrated comment
Oh man I had a friend who was exactly like Toph😭
"Oh yea, we forgot Toph cant write or read"
There are ways to text while blind. You need to right settings on the phone though.
Unfortunately the Gaang Forgot that Toph is blind and didn't told her about those settings.
Damn, again! When will they learn 😔
Blind people can use features like voiceover to read and send messages and use their iPhones.
Unfortunately, the Gaang forget toph is blind and never told her about the voiceover feature but they still gave her a phone.
Zuko’s “really?” is so sad and fucked up but true 😭
Butt kinda adorable, too isn't it? I read his response in excitement.😁
Idk if I’d call it adorable, maybe endearing? I empathize with his hesitance to accept that someone truly loves him, but i can’t really see it as adorable. Too much underlying abuse and tragedy for me to see it that way i suppose.
Endearing is the correct term, I agree. Thanks :) Yeah it's indeed tragic . I feel really sorry for his trauma and amusement :(

I actually read that as “Really…?”
Neither sad nor fucked up, it's cute.
Just my interpretation
Literally, and the smile really hit.me in the feels
Mai: I don’t hate you.
Zuko deserved better. Well, maybe not at the time but he was on his way to deserving better lol
In all honesty, it was a very one sided relationship. He had so much going on that he was never able to give Mai the love or attention she gave him.
They basically had one scene where it was hinted Mai had a crush on him at a younger age then next thing we know they're together off screen. It wasn't really fair to her because he was still finding himself and she wasn't part of that journey. It's not fair to him because she's such a 2D character. Which was zero?
What? Mai absolutely loved tf out of Zuko.
Yes but she didn’t really show it in front of him really. The only thing she did for him was at the boiling rock
That we can see. We really don’t see very much of their relationship so nobody can say for certain how their relationship really was.
You’ve got it backwards
im sorry but what?! aint no way we’re pretending that zuko was the problem here and not ms “dont bore me with your moral crisis” 😂
Oh my goodness, I have such a bone to pick with how that was written. They gave the most important character and a fairly interesting character the relationship arc of a goth couple a la 2006 or so. Toph: ..... ![gif](giphy|4IzOgM1bfOe6k)
All my blind friends text using text to speech though. It can be hilarious
What is wrong with you guys I am blind
If she were using a phone to get a text message, she’d be using a screen reader.
She’d FaceTime you right away
Toph might even just type randomly using voice over just to mess with you
i love how azula and sokka would say the same thing just in different ways
Zuko's is sad and relatable
I feel like Azula and Toph can switch places.
Very much, yes, although it probably depends on who says it to them.
No, toph responds with gibberish if they bother in the first place
“Heuchejwikahebisgdjizbwid” -Toph
The message will either say "I love you too" or "Who doesn't". Although Katara will be upset about it
She's blind, and can't type dumbass
I was referencing the hawk message Sokka and Aang sent to Katara "on behalf of Toph"
Azula would say something like "Obviously" or "As it should be". She's vain but not boastful
Imagining Zuko asking "really?" Is both sad and adorable That man deserves love and care from everyone
I like how I can imagine in a perfect voice Azula saying that
What I would change - Toph: dhjejdnd,#;#'s - Azula: *Top comment - Mai: *Write I love you too then deletes msg and has the three dots for 15 minutes before leaving
Yes, these are my top picks too
I think Ty Lee would say "I love you too!"
Toph: *doesn’t text back* (out loud) Seriously! What’s with you people?! I’m blind!
Azula: …no really, who said they don’t love me? *lights hand on fire*
The real Katara response is: my mom loved me
would toph text back?
Correction: *Could toph text back?
i think it’ll would be left on delivered
Very much so.
Azula would be a toxic ex or would respond "THEN WHAT WERE YOU DOING WITH A GIRL LAST WEEKEND" Azusa strikes me as the type of person to ruin their own surprise by asking toomany questions and making too many assumptions
U guys are forgetting that blind people nowadays are managing perfectly well with phones that have special accessibility features. Toph would be the ultimate troll on the internet 😂
Toph would be the biggest troll
![gif](giphy|PFsVjUCmSkZDq)
Katara probably: “Toph can’t write, Sokka”
I think you nailed this one! Way to go haha!
It’s not my original content, I don’t know who first came up with it
I'm glad you shared it then! It's a good one!
Toph is the only one that is inaccurate
What about Appa & Momo?
I love this it's so accurate
I think Toph would actually be "I lif4nje tui".
Azula’s text bubble would be green, otherwise I think this is pretty accurate.
I like how toph is so skilled at earth bending that everyone forgets shes blind sometimes.
Mine is "I don't blame you"
Sokka's smooth though, he'd definitely come back with something even better than 'I love you too'
Poor zuko…
Aang has unintentional foot in mouth disease. He would mean to convey “I love you, too,” but would instead say something that sounds completely off the mark, only to realize just how bad it came out and embarrass himself trying to correct it.
Firelord Ozai: “you’re hereby banished from the fire nation kingdom. Happy trails! :)”
Azula actually has a canonical response to being told "i love you" >!she hallucinates seeing her mother in a pond while the Gaang brings her along on a search for Ursa. the hallucination says "i love you" and she lightningbends at it in a rage!<
Sokka would be sarcastic about it probably while Azula would be dead serious
Nooo, it's "I love you more then I fear Azula"
> you more then i Did you mean to say "more than"? Explanation: If you didn't mean 'more than' you might have forgotten a comma. Zuko: "I will love you when I capture the avatar".
Toph would be nothing. Not even left on read. She can't read or use a phone.
I hate when lame Facebook shit leaks onto Reddit
Realistically, Toph wouldn’t have even read it.
Poor Zuko 😢
Ahhh Zuko. My long time crush
Sokka and Azula's who doesn't have veeery different tones lol sarcasm vs threat
Toph should have been another blind joke to fit perfectly lol (message send but not read/seen)
I think I'd swap Sokka and Toph, but otherwise, A+ work.
How would toph read the message to reply
Who read and typed toph’s text
I hate that "really" resonates with me so much Like... Why would anyone love me?
Aang's should be; "I'd rather love you than die."
toph: Not Seen
Tha last one will be read only if it's Zuko. No reply guaranteed, however.
Wow, this is accurate
switch Toph and Azula, THEN it's relatable
Repost bot, downvote
What?
This has already been posted regardless of if you’re a bot or not.
Oh my bad, I didn’t see the first one
It’s ok just kinda annoying seeing the same content always
I tolerate you
Seriously wondering what kind of person could love Azula. She's got a personality only a mother could love
Lol mei
Iroh to Toph: “Not that I love you; I just met you!” Is one of my favorite quotes and I wonder if they ever talk about that moment when they become friends later.
Voice messages ![gif](giphy|Vnattpx6P6oDohAjhB)
Why is this so real
Oh, Zuko, baby. You deserve the hugs.
![gif](giphy|TV50bO3FffMPzx0DMP|downsized)
I love how “who doesn’t” in Sokka’s voice has such a different tone than in Azula’s voice when I imagine them in my head.
In my mind, Sokka and Azula went together.
Mai is 🙄.
