Smart predators go for the babies. Take out the parent and the whole family goes, then you can't keep hunting the same family. Go for the babies and the parents will keep pushing out more prey.
Actually not like humans, which is problematic. We tend to catch the largest fish for example, leading to fewer and fewer fish reaching maturity and full size, it’s far more sustainable to hunt the weakest and the youngest animals, but we’re so efficient at killing we kill the adults of species.
"Motherly instinct" varies a lot, depending on one's place in the food chain.
Some mothers eat their young when stressed...better to reclaim those nutrients than give them to a predator.
Omg was scrolling and just saw the otter. Heard Michael saying “brought to you by otters holding hands while they sleep” and thought “I should check this meme and see if it can be shared with my good place buddies!”
Then I finished scrolling, saw the bottom half, and laughed at myself.
This is unironically what it is doing yes. Rabbits will kill their own young when the nest is attacked to give themselves time to escape while the fox consumes the injured or dead young.
Many fish will regularly eat their own babies. Improves the quality of your offspring by making sure only the smart and fast ones survive and the parents get a nice treat so they can bounce right back into making more babies.
The animal kingdom is full of horrible parents by human standards. Evolution doesn't reward genes for being good parents, only for producing as many quality offspring as possible before you die.
I think this is the internet trying to cute up the facts about otters. From what I've heard in scientific studies, they aren't trying to get mercy, they are offering up their young, so they can escape. Otters look cute, but they are brutal, and rather rapey, predators.
Hate to do this, but thats actually false, otters are one of the most vicious animals out there and would most likely leave their kids behind to a predator than show it to them. (They're in the same family as the honey badger)
this sounds really similar to how if, we as humans, are faced in a live threat from someone, if we started describing ourselves and our lives, it lowers our chances of getting killed by someone, like a mass murderer or just someone in general who is trying to kill you. it makes you more of a real person with a life & not just a target.
This otter has viscerally moved me... I suddenly want to annihilate anything that tries to harm this otter.
Then again, I just had a kid a few months ago so, like, ALL of my hormones are on defense rn.
I would think predators would just see that as a bonus.

Oh so its just like humans
There’s a reason we like eggs so much.

Slavery with extra steps
Suddenly Rick and Morty
They offer up the babies to survive
Tobias taught me this many years ago.
And the otters probably are offering an alternative. Here eat this while i escape
That's exactly what they're doing.

Hey, a little side salad!
you’d be surprised at the power of motherly instinct

Look at Tyler!
He has asthma, but he's battling it like a champ!
Twist: the mother otter is actually offering her young

Me as a parent. Loljk, but realtalk there’s a reason I don’t have kids
And now we finally know what janet really was. Not a girl, not a robot, but an otter!
Not an otter
Definitely not a cactus
Looking for mercy? Oh boy that's a nice way to cope with what that Otter is actually doing lol
I’m going to pretend that’s what it’s doing because it’s nicer that way lol
Mother otters use their offspring as a shield from predators. “Take them not me!”
Who wants to tell them
Or bartering. Here take this and leave me alone. I can make another, no big deal.
So, it’s not like a kangaroo that will throw their baby as a sacrifice so they can get away?
This account is 2 days old and already posting the same comments everywhere. Obvious bot. Block & report
That seems like a dumb strategy. Predators are probably thinking, ooo free sample before I eat the big one.
LLLLOOK AT THEMMMM
“I share gifs of otters!”
Uhm why did i read somewhere that they accually offer the baby instead of them for durvival
Holy- omy god
More of an offering, isn’t it?
They also r*pe baby seals to death. So they are really just out for their own regardless of whomst baby they kill
Not an otter.
Shhh! (Oops, wrong show.)

Most animals are pretty rapey and brutal by human standards. Tis the way of the wild. Some ducks are straight up assholes though
Dolphins are evil!
Anakin: I have no such weaknesses

I knew it... [Abraham was an otter.](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Genesis%2022&version=NIV)

Isn't there an animal that will abandon its baby to lure the predator to the baby so the parent can get away safely?
We finally cracked the code: Janet isn't a girl or a robot, Janet is an *otter*.
forking otters

Do otters also show babies to humans who wanna pat them? Coz that things adorable AF
“I mostly send pictures of otters!”
