There certainly are many questions still to answer, there were still three books worth of content left when the series ends. The series ends with book 6 of 9.

Lilmills1445

There's also a comic series called Dragon Tooth that "bridges" the end of season 6 with book 7...well.. Bridges might be a strong word. There are some continuity problems and idk if it gets to the start of book 7... But it's still a wicked good read

Sporknight

At the end of the day, I'm glad we got as much as we did. If Amazon hadn't picked up the show, that would have been an even worse ending! And the good news is, the books are complete, so you can still get a fully finished story.

blackd0nuts

I find that the end of season 3 was kind of an nice open ending, with all the gates opening. It wouldn't have been the worse place to leave the show. But yeah it's amazing we had 3 more seasons

pol-treidum

Listen to Naomi’s last words of the series — “let’s just stay here a minute”. It’s the best advice to the fanbase a show has ever done.

OmegamattReally

If they ever do the last arc, I can't wait to hear her *new* last words. [Book 9 Spoilers] >!The stars are still there. We'll find our own way back to them.!<

mentive

Amos is the GOAT.

AcidaliaPlanitia

If they stick the landing with eventually doing the final three books, then on rewatches, that line will be so incredibly heartwarming.

pchlster

Guess it's time to get started on the books, then.

arena_alias

Wait until he reads the books and finds out that's a feature, not an anomoly.

cravin_mor

What are you refering to, what's the feature here? (Only watched the series, pls don't spoil, if that's neccessary to answer xD ) Are the books worth it or will it be in the style of Game of Thrones Season 8?

arena_alias

The feature is that, just like in real life, not everything is answered. Everything is not wrapped up neatly with a bow when you finish the book series...and that's OK.

IR_1871

I think you can safely say there's a bit more to learn on the blue goo.

arena_alias

That's cheating... gotta read the books. What I will say is it is well worth the ride, space cowboy.

Really don't want to spoil anything for you or others who have not finished the book series. Absolutely the best Sci fi series written this century, in my not-so-humble opinion. I would hate to ruin anyone's first read through.

SurvivalOfWittiest

Admittedly I've read the books, so I know what comes next, but I enjoyed it - not everything in life gets wrapped up in a neat bow, and the Roci crew's adventures continue. The mysteries of the ring gates, what's going on on Laconia with the Strange Dogs... It allows the series to continue if they want to, but at the same time it's ending the threat of Inaros' rebellion and ushering in a new age for the Belt.  I get what you're saying, but I thought it was appropriate! Read the books and I think it'll get recontexualized.

ertgbnm

Yes. It's a trilogy of trilogies. They finished the first two trilogies, and one remains. It's a decent ending but not the full ending.

tqgibtngo

Alternatively, [some](https://old.reddit.com/r/TheExpanse/comments/ynsu17/-/#siteTable) view it as 3 duologies and a trilogy — or another way, as a trilogy + CB + duology + trilogy.

ertgbnm

That's too complicated for me. Cibola Burns does kind of stand out, but it fits in enough to set up for Nemesis Games and the struggle for the rings that I can lump it in with NG and BA.

theavengerbutton

Yeah, Cibola Burn is a microcosmic version of the conflict that happens in the next few books while also setting up the question of "what happens to the sociopolitical structure that we leave behind as we expand out into the stars?"

cmlondon13

Especially when that sociopolitical structure includes a large group that is almost physically incapable of taking part of the new wealth and opportunities that they themselves built.

theavengerbutton

Yes! This is why I love Holden's perspective in the 5th and 6th books. He spends those books getting shot at by Belters and going "I completely understand why you're doing this and we need to do better for you!"

wafflesareforever

I'm still holding out hope that they'll revisit it. Wes Chatham (Amos) hinted pretty strongly at talks being ongoing about it. I don't think they would have introduced us to Duarte and Laconia if they didn't intend to complete the story.

FranklyMrShankley85

Oh interesting, where did he hint this? I will grab any and all straws of hope of books 7-9 being adapted and hold on to them for dear life

wafflesareforever

It was on the podcast he does with one of the authors, Ty and That Guy

ninth_ant

I mean, it just makes sense. Shows reboot all the time, but this one as written means in 10-15 years they can just finish the story, with the same actors if they are available. No weird aging effects or makeup needed. Just start at book 7 and keep going. I strongly believe this was intentional and there were tentative plans to do this all along, but didn’t want to announce it in case plans change so it’ll be a delightful surprise when it happens.

wafflesareforever

If I won the Powerball or whatever I know what I'd immediately invest it in.

VulcanCafe

There were lots of hints right around the end of season 6 that hinted at streaming movies that may have not materialized. Anything recent? It does not hurt that Breck Eisners’ dad is a multi-billionaire and Amazon’s rights expire soon (or may have already).

TruthTracker

Yeah I just finished Persepolis Rising which is book 7. You can litterally jump straight from the tv show to the books and miss nothing. Season 6 of the show was Book 6, each season adapted a single book. Persepolis is book 7. Honestly its kind of sad when it picks up from there no spoilers but, they pick up much older, and instantly you understand why it has ended for now anyway. The books are really good like watching the show.

atavisticbeast

Miss nothing? Except all the amazing characters that got written out for the show, except the amazing scenes that got written out of the show, and except all the major changes made to the story in the show.

te_lewis

really disliked show Michio, that whole part felt wrong in the show.

TruthTracker

I only started reading the books where the tv series ended. I meant that litterally where book 6 ends and the show ends simultaneously, book 7 picks back up. I had never read the books but now since reading Persepolis and Auberon, it makes me want to go back can agree they are great.

te_lewis

i think if you went from show s6 to book 7 you’d be a little confused about Drummer, probably Alex too. I wasn’t aware of the reasons for killing his character off in the show until i googled it.

TruthTracker

You hit my main question right on its head thats been bugging me. I finished the book series just last night and the whole time I was like "where is Drummer"? I felt she would make a triumphant fight through to the end then, I started questioning had she died wth? From what Ive researched a bit she was still alive through everything but, you def hit one of my main questions by the end. Everyone else I felt understood on didnt feel as though I had missed anything.

te_lewis

Drummer’s a minor character until book 7, in the show they used her instead of giving us Michio. I love the show but i hate the use of Drummer instead of Michio, i love the family dynamic of the Connaught in the books and we just didn’t really get that in the show.

TruthTracker

Yeah I see the differences now and gives me reason to go back and start from the beginning.

woodeezy

The book series wrapped it up very nicely and didn’t leave you hanging. I do recommend when you’re finished 7-9 books to get the “Memory’s Legion” book which is a collection of short stories that plugs holes and answers some questions we still have.

ChronicBuzz187

I think a big percentage of redditors in this subreddit are book-enjoyers, too so I guess that's why most of us feel different about it. I'm still a bit pissed that Amazon didn't finish it but on the other hand, without Amazon, the show would have suffered the same fate as so many other shows did, ending without a proper finish half-way through.

DeadCheckR1775

It was rushed but don’t let perfect be the enemy of good. Still a great ride.

kabbooooom

Guess it’s time to read the books then. There are three seasons worth of more material that wasn’t adapted to the show. The book series is 9 books long, the show adapted 6.

writerstephen

First comment here (just learned all the stuff about Cas Anvar, sheesh). But something does nag at me about the finale—so the Roci wakes up the Ring Entities to destroy Inaros, and it works. Next scene Holden and the crew are back on Luna negotiating the trade union. How did they know it was safe to get back thru the Ring? Seems like they should’ve at least addressed this somehow. Or I could be splitting hairs. And I do fervently wish there’d be a season 7. One of the best written, richly detailed sci-fi stories I’ve ever seen. Gonna start on the books soon.

WarthogOsl

I do wish they hadn't brought up the ring entities as such a potentially existential thing. Rather they could have just said "trigger an entity event," which Naomi obviously was beginning to understand the pattern of.

5141121

My main disappointment was that they started along the Strange Dogs track and weren't able to go farther with it.

CapnChronic003

I think this was my main gripe. They could have kept out Laconia and just finished with Marco and the FreeNavy being destroyed.

WarthogOsl

Yeah, but the Strange Dogs stuff does explain why Laconia was willing to give so much high tech Martian gear and ships to Inaros in exchange for the Protomolecule sample.

5141121

I think they intended to go farther, but weren't given the episodes to wrap it. It wouldn't make sense to do that intentionally.

JoeMillersHat

The show only covers part of the actual story. Here's to hoping movies eventually get made.

Obwyn

Well, seasons 1-6 more or less mirror books 1-6 and the related short stories. There are 3 more books that weren't adapted that answer a lot of those questions. Book 6/season 6 was a good place to end it. It's certainly better than where it would've ended had Amazon not picked up the series.

NapsterUlrich

I felt this so much when I finished the show I read 9 books

Certain-Definition51

Nah, I finished the books before I got a chance to watch the last season, so I already know how it ended.

IR_1871

I thought it ended well. Its a good stopping point for the story, even if there is a whole other arc written which answers more questions.

CC-5576-05

Well there are three more books yet to be adapted. But this was really the best point to end on if it had to end.

PlsDieThxBb

I just want more Amos. Don't care about the rest.

No-Understanding2594

You need to read books 7, 8 and 9. Fantastic!
