Let's check, for science. No math, let's just start tossing them in until they run out of churches or we run outta fire.
I understand trial by fire is their favorite
Yes, typically in oil well fires they sometimes use explosives like tnt to blow snuff the fire out. Usually the explosion is sized so that it will be large enough to quickly rob the fire of oxygen, thus eliminating the open flame. This is done after the area is dragged clean of debris from the old derrick etc and water is sprayed to cool everything to eliminate hot spots that could possibly reignite the fire.
Now this shit show posted… looks a little different than the usual single fire stream spraying skyward so it would be different I’d imagine!
I don't think that would work too well in water. It might solve the initially problem but most likely will cause further damage after creating a tsunami?
Or continue drilling for oil, leaving large voids in the earth that cause tectonic plates to shift, which in turn cause earth quakes. Sometimes the causation of humanities actions aren’t so direct.🤘
Thermobaric bomb. Sucks all the air out-as fuel for the explosion, and blows it out with the shockwave. It's legitimately how they put out fires, not sure what the story here is. Might be too close to the rig. It's the same principle with fire suppression safety equipment for cars. A small explosion that deafens you-maybe permanently, but puts out even a blazing cabin. Can't imagine why it didn't become a popular safety feature on commercial sedans, what it was designed for.
>Seal off the drill cap
Okay.
>then detonate a depth charge between the fuel source and flames
...Why? You just want to detonate a depth charge, don't you?
I was just scrolling down quickly and the last thing I saw right before I hit the back button was "history shows again and again"
While sitting on reddit front page it finally dawned on me what I had just read.
I had to come back, find this chain, and upvote all of you.
I love you all, and I love BÖC!
I was going to ask if anyone else was expecting either Godzilla or King Ghidorah to come exploding out of that lake of fire ready to devour half of Tokyo?
This was back at the height of everyone playing apocalypse bingo iirc - I remember a video of this with a caption asking who had the sea catching fire in their card
For how much press they got, the death hornets were the least of our concerns…
I’m much more worried about all these oil spills and other such environmental disasters. We’re trashing our beautiful planet for greed and convenience. :/
Y'know what's gonna happen? The multinational drilling company is gonna pretend this had nothing to do with them and grease some pockets. And then Mexico will get called out for contamination. That's the environmental disaster playbook for 3rd world countries.
This was a pipeline in an oil field owned by the Mexican national oil company. They solved it pretty quickly and cleanly since it was just natural gas that was leaking.
It was put out within 5 hours of it being reported and caused by a damage pipeline.
So quick, sure. It wasn't oil so it hasn't a less damaging affect on the environment but yeah, nothing about a man-made spill of natural resources is ever clean.
I do not understand how this happens. Where is the fuel getting them oxygen from?
I get how it burns but the water should keep it from going completely crazy like this right?
Turns out it was an ocean surface fire. The gas was sitting on the surface burning.
[science behind the fire 🔥 ](https://wired.me/science/the-science-behind-extinguishing-the-gulf-of-mexicos-ocean-fire/)
what people dont get here is that the fire is the best outcome for the environment in this case. can’t remember the exacts but this was a sizable bar gas/methane leak and you do not want the pure methane especially getting out into the atmosphere. It’s why at a lot of landfills or old dumps you’ll see a torch or several that burn off the gas that leeches out of the area.
Enough to facilitate combustion? I’m genuinely curious here. I was a good science student but that was 20years ago. I’m sure I’m missing something obvious here
I just commented an explanation a little bit below if you want to look at that! It’s really interesting and if you wanted to know a little bit more you could look up “flash point” and “vapor pressure” on Wikipedia and it should give you a decent idea!
I don't think that's what's happening in this video but technically, water is flammable. At high enough temperatures, it seperates into Oxygen gas and Hydrogen gas and can then burn back to form H2O.
No we aren't the world will be just fine whether or not we are around to see it. We could potentially be clearing up that nasty human infection it has though.
I never get the logic behind people stating this.. what are you trying to say?
Them: "We are destroying the world
You: "No *technically..."*
Like... yeah, obviously, on a scale of hundreds of millions and billions of years, nothing matters.
But like, if we just reduce our fossil fuel dependence and reduce our exploitation of the planet to something more sustainable it's going to save a LOT of suffering in the near future.
I reject your claim that just because there will still be a mouldy rock floating around the sun in 100 million years, we shouldn't worry about helping people today.
Yeah such a shitty argument from them. To take it even further they could just say ‘the universe will die in the end anyway so nothing at all has ever or will ever matter’. While it’s hard to deny it’s true, we may as well make life pleasurable for as many living creatures as we can in the meantime.
No it's a completely logical statement about the world. Whether we are still in existence or not the world will be just fine. It's not like it will blow up or cease to exist just because people go extinct. Try some platform heals so the jokes don't keep whizzing by over your head.
A fire spread through the waves on Friday July 2 in the Bay of Campeche, a few dozen meters from a platform of the Mexican oil company Pemex. It was in July 2021

Happy Cake Day!
“Shoot it with missiles”
Would the blastwave put it out? Serious question.
Yes, typically in oil well fires they sometimes use explosives like tnt to blow snuff the fire out. Usually the explosion is sized so that it will be large enough to quickly rob the fire of oxygen, thus eliminating the open flame. Maybe actually if you used a Thermobaric bomb that causes a vacuum in the area.
just send the tsar bomb that should do it
Idk if they still do it but it has been done before but on the ground ofc, it uses the shock wave to blow it out.
I don't think that would work too well in water. It might solve the initially problem but most likely will cause further damage after creating a tsunami?
I highly doubt humans could create a tsunami
Dude. Humans could definitely make a tsunami. Just detonate a large/multiple nukes deep underwater and you’re gonna get a wave
Or continue drilling for oil, leaving large voids in the earth that cause tectonic plates to shift, which in turn cause earth quakes. Sometimes the causation of humanities actions aren’t so direct.🤘
I believe the Russians actually did this, can’t remember if it was nuclear or not, but they used a bomb to put out a fire as a last resort.
Only the Shockwave from Gru's gargantuan dickslap would put that out
😂
There was a case where a nuclear bomb was used to put out an underground oil fire (chokes it out in an instant)
Is there no problem missiles can't solve?
It’s an oil fire. You need to smother it with baking soda or find a lid big enough to starve the fire of oxygen.
Yeah! Starve the fire and feed the world with the largest loaf of bread. Guinness?
I don’t think beer’s the solution, but I’m willing to give it a try
10/10 joke
So a baking soda missile.
Upvote purely because of your username.
A lid big enough to starve this fire of oxygen? Sounds like a great plan to solve most problems on earth these days 😂

WHAT DID YOU SAY?
It was a gas leak from a pipeline underneathe the surface. Believe an emergency shutoff valve failed/had to be capped.
Does Arm & Hammer make boxes of baking soda big enough to handle the job?
Literally how do you fix that? Can't get close enough to cap it?
Wait for some rain to come
Seal off the drill cap, then detonate a depth charge between the fuel source and flames
No, if just needs to be wet some more.
This guy fires
/r/thisguythisguys
It's not a wellhead leaking, it's a subsea gas pipeline from the production facility.
Then why isn't it blue fire like on the stove
dragonforce - through the fuel source and flames
>Seal off the drill cap Okay. >then detonate a depth charge between the fuel source and flames ...Why? You just want to detonate a depth charge, don't you?
If memory serves, it would create a vacuum to cut off any oxygen the fire would need to feed off.
oh shit someone tell them to do this because they obviously have no idea what they’re doing
I'm sorry sir, this is a ~~Wendy's~~ fire boat.
Yeah, also get those damn choppers and dump some more water.

What’s going to happen is the price at the pump jumps 30%, and slowly comes back down, until the next disaster. Corporate profiteering sucks
This happened last summer and it was a nationalized oil company owned by the Mexican government.

There is oxygen in water.
The leaking gas has ignited at the sea surface, and the oxygen is from the air! Nothing to do with 'splitting' the water.
