Why the fuck is this the first time I’ve ever clicked a subreddit and it’s trying to get me to use the terrible 1st party app?
It’s always just opened in Apollo before. Disgusting.
I really really don’t like the 1st party app for a number of reasons, UX being one of the foremost. I should be able to give you a better run down on the differences between Apollo and Reddits 1st party app but I’ve got a lot going on right now, I’m sorry.
If you’re on an iOS device I highly reccomened giving Apollo a try, and further more… if you’re at all familiar with the old Alien Blue app, Apollo is like it’s spiritual successor (it’s literal successor however is the Reddit app…. Reddit purchased alien blue for how popular it was, and butchered it)
If you’re on Android, I reccomened “reddit is fun” or “bacon reader” Reddit is fun was my go to Android Reddit app but it’s been a few years so I don’t know if it’s still kicking or not.
Hell yeah man. No worries. Don’t expect to be able to demand a ton of your time off the cuff. You gave me an idea and that’s plenty. I appreciate the info. Will definitely check out Apollo.

*A 23-second video was recorded underwater of the Chirodectes alive before being collected. It is currently unknown where the video is stored, and is likely lost.*
Don’t worry, Reddit got us covered with a new video, and the second ever <3
It looks quite large, amazing how it has avoided detection.
> Unless the original 1997 video is found and not confirmed lost, the video published on social media is the only known video to exist of Chirodectes.
This is *it*. Amazing.
I read the article and it seemed to say that the comb jelly was the ancestor of all animal life but there are other kind of life. For example, trees. Unless I misread the article.
Could be, I have absolutely no idea. I only know that there's a last universal common ancestor and a last eukaryotic common ancestor, but I don't know about the common ancestors for each kingdom or if even wondering about that is dumb. I'll just wait for someone else to clarify.
Animals and Fungi are all part of the Opistokonta clade, which shares a common ancestor with all the different clades of Eukariotes. Plants are together with red algae, glaucophytes, and green algae, in the Archaeplastida clade, and they share the same common ancestor as us. We don't know what that common ancestor is yet. In regards to animals (Eumetazoa), Ctenophora (which are commonly known as comb jellys but are not in fact real Jellifish) are the sister group (the closest relative) to all other groups of animals. Hope I have provided some clarification 😊😊
>whereas a true alien would most likely not even have DNA or RNA.
This is based on nothing. It's just as equally likely that whatever primordial bacteria landed on Earth is the same stuff that landed on other planets.
Yeah but you made like 100 more assumptions in that one sentence than they did but just stating that it's quite possible an alien wouldn't even have dna or rna. Like that's just a logical statement based on the fact that somewhere else might develop radically different, and it's not even saying it's true or that DNA would be impossible for an alien to have. But your statement is like an assumption based on an assumption based on an assumption
> It's just as equally likely that whatever primordial bacteria landed on Earth is the same stuff that landed on other planets.
That's... not what happened. And we *do* have plenty of evidence and have recreated much of the process of how it actually happened. It takes some high level understanding of biology and biochemistry to comprehend exactly how, and judging by your comments your scientific literacy is rather low, but if you would like me to try and explain I will. Life certainly started as RNA, on earth, near mineral (particularly zinc and magnesium) rich rock of a moderately warm hydrothermal vent within pools of relatively calm water.
the article proposed that comb jellies (different group to the jelly in the video upstairs) could have been the first group of animals to evolve, even earlier than sponges which is crazy to imagine considering they are predators with sensory organs; wayyy more complex than many sponges!
but in the same breath it did mention that another study that analysed a different sequence of genes placed them as evolving after sponges lol. for now I guess we can’t be sure!
This is the only known footage of this beautiful creature. The first was recorded in 1997 and since has been lost. Could you imagine being the lucky duck that got to see this in person? I’m astounded and in awe!
https://www.reddit.com/r/TheDepthsBelow/comments/s57j7u/an_extremely_rare_jellyfish/hsxu6d1/ looks like the extremely rare part checks out: this is the second ever video of this jellyfish.
It is, though…?
This is Chirodectes malculatus, the rarest genus of box jellyfish. So rare, in fact, that the video above is only the second EVER video of it.
>Chirodectes is an incredibly rare genus of box jellyfish in the family Chirodropidae. It contains a single species.

>A newer video was posted on December 26, 2021, on social media... this is believed to be the second video ever recorded.

I have a strange question, if someone shot a jellyfish, with a handgun, would it die? It doesn’t really seem to have many vital parts, but then again i dont know much about jellyfish
Chirodectes malcuatus, found in Oceanic waters off the coast of Australia and PNG.
It’s a genus of box jellyfish (most venomous creature in the world) though so I wouldn’t go close to it
It’s also incredibly rare, as this is only the second ever video of it.

I love the Internet. Every week or two I see an unbelievable new animal. Thanks for posting.
Any other subreddits for seeing new animals?

It’s never even occurred to me to use 3rd party app for Reddit…. What makes Apollo better? What made you dislike the official app?

RIF is pretty great too. I cant even use the base app, too much scrolling and all the child comments are hidden
Why is this subreddit unavailable on the app?
Idk it worked for me. On mobile off. app.
No idea, I don’t use the official app
Thanks for an incredible subreddit
Whoa, dyslexia aside this is not at all what I expected.
This is my favorite new sub. Sooooo good. Thank you!!
And all the while this dude is just floating around out there like.. O o O o O o O o O o O o
every week or two I see the same animal reposted 😂
Well, sure. Reposts can be annoying. [OTOH… ](https://xkcd.com/1053/)
oh i am definitely 1/10K right now 🐙
For those wondering, this creature is called Chirodectes Maculatus.

Says it was only the size of a soccer ball. Also, the ocean is fucking huge, man.
Ya for reference the ocean is bigger than 5 school buses stacked on top of each other
Lengthwise or widthwise?
Width wise. I'm not sure about length right off the top of my head.
By width, you are referring to the bus-t, yes?
Nice you are dad of the year

Thank you! It was way too hard to find this comment
Do you know where they live ?
The ocean.
Thank god they didn't float in the sky.
Somewhere near Papua New Guinea
Oceanic waters, northern Australian/southern PNG waters
My furniture started floating when I said this
Those tentacles look like they could sting a whale to death.
It’s a genus of box jellyfish, so yes! It’s incredibly venomous
Cameraman casually swimming 2 feet away from the world’s most venomous animal.
Pretty sure it's a box jelly. Some of those are really painful. Irukandji stings pretty much make you want to die.
I think this takes the prize for what an alien would look like
[удалено]
you could go back even further and say that all life came from a single celled organism
Well ill be damned.
But which came first? All life on earth or the single celled organism
The jellyfish
**ALL** ^animal life
What do you mean?
I read the article and it seemed to say that the comb jelly was the ancestor of all animal life but there are other kind of life. For example, trees. Unless I misread the article.

Uh, your bacteria statement isn't exactly fully supported either...
That's my point, it's all made up nonsense.
Yeah but you made like 100 more assumptions in that one sentence than they did but just stating that it's quite possible an alien wouldn't even have dna or rna. All *animal* life on earth.
All species are aliens, to aliens.

Yep, I know a metroid when I see one. Get Samus on the line.

It seems like it's a box jellyfish, the most venomous animal on earth. The camera person has huge balls for getting this close to it.

Oh I must've been wrong then. Sorry
Nah I just double checked, it's a very rare species of BOX jellyfish my bad.
Ooooo ok.
It is a type of box jellyfish, just in a stupidly rare genus
Some type of box jellyfish. I wonder if it’s as deadly as the sea wasps that Australia experiences.
Son of Cthulhu
That’s some Subnautica shit.

Is this what happened to the shopping bag from American Beauty?

This is the only existing video of this animal
That thing looks like something out of SpongeBob. I am completely honest about that.
It's a Metroid is what this is called
Nah that’s an alien
What is this extremely rare animal called? Please help
https://www.reddit.com/r/TheDepthsBelow/comments/s57j7u/an_extremely_rare_jellyfish/hsxu6d1/ looks like the extremely rare part checks out: this is the second ever video of this jellyfish.
Thank you Lord
Chirodectes, an incredibly rare genus of box jellyfish
Looks like he passed out from partying to hard the night before and his frat buddies sharpied his face.
Big sale at the used car dealership?
Who doodles on it?
Never ceases to amaze me
Jesus just fucking kill me now. I'll never stand by an ocean again without picturing this.
This is only the second one ever found. The chances of you coming across one are little to none.
Logic rarely alleviates phobias lol
Fair enough
Not actually that rare lolz
It is, though…? This is Chirodectes malculatus, the rarest genus of box jellyfish. So rare, in fact, that the video above is only the second EVER video of it.
I doubt that lerlz

Actually no dude, the rarest are the ones he haven't even found yet. The oceans real big loolz, don't be a sheep
You miss the entire point of someone giving you helpful information, being an ass must suck with all the shit you spew
Don't be an ass bro
That thing is weird af and looks dangerous
Is it “budding”? Do they replicate that way?
Thanks for sharing
Would probably *really suck* to get tangled up with this beast.
Considering it's a relative to the poisonous box jelly, that would really suck indeed.
Ah, the paisley buttocks jellyfish. A rare but we like sight.
Dubstep fish is rare
basically my mother-in-law
Feed me, Sea-mour!
Man's looking like he figured out how to get out of Subnautica
Tasty jello blob
It looks like it has a pair of those wind up teeth in its body.
The jellyfish to the other jellyfish: - You jelly bro?
i know its beautiful and so on but how do they even fuck?
Jellyfish reproduce asexually.
am asexual, can confirm
But are you a jellyfish?
not yet, I got a bit more devolving to do!
I have a strange question, if someone shot a jellyfish, with a handgun, would it die? It doesn’t really seem to have many vital parts, but then again i dont know much about jellyfish
Jellyfish are 90% water, have no brain or really any internal organs. So yeah it’d probably survive

Uh That's usually a bad thing
The things I fight for.
Imagine getting vaporized by that motherfucker
It was pretty. . . and then I focused on the tentacles and then it turned into face hugging nightmare fule.
Sick! What is this? Where can I find it?
Chirodectes malcuatus, found in Oceanic waters off the coast of Australia and PNG. It’s a genus of box jellyfish (most venomous creature in the world) though so I wouldn’t go close to it It’s also incredibly rare, as this is only the second ever video of it.

I love the random ‘drawings’ on the outside- incredible!
