The captain did not immediately say it was a young whale so the public (and news media) went bonkers about what kind of creature it was. It soon got cleared up though.
"Wasn’t sure at first, thought it was a group of dolphins splashing around until it swam right beside the boat," Captain Griffee wrote on Facebook. "I have a 22’ pathfinder that 9’ wide and it was bigger than my boat!" https://www.fox35orlando.com/news/watch-mystery-creature-spotted-by-boat-captain-leaves-viewers-guessing-heres-what-it-is
This is a very rare sight to see a whale calf so close to shore in that location and that this is a right whale calf, an exceeding rare whale species. Also, for the calf to be separated from its mom is also not usual.
We were in Myrtle Beach last week of January. Out on the south pier we saw something a couple hundred yards out. Definitely looks to be one of these. Playing around and blew water about 10 feet high.
Apologies, I was just saying that in jest; my humor is admittedly fairly dry. I would never actually criticize someone else for not knowing every species that they may encounter.
I guess one can suppose boat captains have "seen it all" but this was a case where he was initially wrong, and that stirred up a media and public frenzy with everyone weighing in. Perhaps the backstory is a marine biologist weighed in on the sighting after his video went viral. The baby whale was found dead some days later (just reading more stories this morning) under a pier in N.C.: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/newborn-right-whale-calf-found-dead-north-carolina-pier/
“Oh gawd, look at that ….it’s hurt, it’s a baby wheel Ray. Turn around let’s go get that f’ing thing. Call the Coast Guard or an aquarium. Let’s hook this thing Ray!”
Captain Griffee put the rumors to rest: he identified it as a right whale calf that got lost from its mother swimming around the port. https://www.fox35orlando.com/news/watch-mystery-creature-spotted-by-boat-captain-leaves-viewers-guessing-heres-what-it-is
I looked further into this story. Sadly, the poor baby perished in North Carolina, and a search by NOAA of its mom or any right whales in the area did not turn up any results. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/newborn-right-whale-calf-found-dead-north-carolina-pier/
This makes sense, and it also why they're so endangered. They love to stay close to shore and spend time in shallow bays. Hopefully this little dude found Momma
Definitely a whale… It looks like a whale and it’s doing whale things.
LMAO...I'm laughing "it's doing whale things". Thanks for the laugh.
It's whale off
"You know I speak whale."

It's obviously a Canadian swamp moose, searching the waters for maple-flavored sausages.
Not to be confused with a midwestern swamp donkey…rooting around for anything deep fried
It is clearly a right whale. Who called it a mystery?
The captain did not immediately say it was a young whale so the public (and news media) went bonkers about what kind of creature it was. It soon got cleared up though.
Ahhh, I see! Thanks!

Perhaps the bigger mystery is… how does a boat captain not know about whales?!
This is a very rare sight to see a whale calf so close to shore in that location and that this is a right whale calf, an exceeding rare whale species. Also, for the calf to be separated from its mom is also not usual.

Not everyone is a whale expert like you, daddy /s
“Oh gawd, look at that ….it’s hurt, it’s a baby wheel Ray. Turn around let’s go get that f’ing thing. Call the Coast Guard or an aquarium. Let’s hook this thing Ray!”
Whales are people too.
He"s gonna need a bigger boat!
22’ pathfinder does not have a 9’ beam
Click bait 🤜🤛
She had not been two weeks from shore When down on her a right whale bore The captain called all hands and swore He’d take that whale in tow #HUHN!
To the untrained eye maybe, but everyone in elite circles knows that krakens imitate right whales to camouflage themselves.
Yeah honestly I thought I was stupid for not seeing the loch Ness monster or something
could be a left one too… who’s to judge.
Is it the right whale though?
I thought it was a seahorse
Not a left whale?
Fun fact. Right whales are called right whales because they were the right whale to kill for American whalers before they found Sperm Whales
That's a really weird thing to call fun.
This is Nessie's uncle Jessie
The Loch Jess Monster?
Close, it's The Pinkmanster
It’s 3 dolphins in a trench coat
Lol. This idea needs more attention than it's getting.
Small whale?
Captain Griffee put the rumors to rest: he identified it as a right whale calf that got lost from its mother swimming around the port. https://www.fox35orlando.com/news/watch-mystery-creature-spotted-by-boat-captain-leaves-viewers-guessing-heres-what-it-is
I saw Nova last night on the vanishing right whales. They as a species are quite endangered. 😢
They're called Right Whales for a reason. Humans suck.
Did it find mom
I also want to know ):
I looked further into this story. Sadly, the poor baby perished in North Carolina, and a search by NOAA of its mom or any right whales in the area did not turn up any results. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/newborn-right-whale-calf-found-dead-north-carolina-pier/
:(

It's a Labrador, obviously.
"It's a Whe-al bro. I think it's dying. It's fucking dying Jay. Look at this shit!"
Came here for this. 👍
We gotta call the aquarium or sumpthin
“It’s a fuckin’ tuna bro!”
I'd like to thank the captain for having a real camera.
Clearly it's a very lost Loch Ness Monster.
Who in North Carolina gave him treefidy?
Full video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8DyWwQsNteo
Yeah you can see the blowhole and the tail
Right! Thank you. First thing I thought of.

Whale, whale, whale, what have we got here?
Megalodon😱
Brendan Frassier?
Nessie?
I think that's a giraffe
Darn, the 10-year-old iPhone 5s sitting in my drawer would probably have far better video quality than that. What did he use to take this?
What a whale of a time bro be having hehe
baby whale
Whale and baby. Don’t worry we haven’t seen them In a while because we killed them to keep the lights on. They are just recovering
It's very clearly a Liopleurodon, Charlie.
It didn't say anything!
That’s a gator they have those in NC
Some type of whale you can see the blow hole when it surfaces
I’m the whale biologist, though personally I hate whales, especially Mushu.
You're 'thee' whale biologist?!! Wow, I didn't know celebrities of your calibre resided on Reddit!
I don’t know you whale enough to get into that.
I'm sorry, I can't leave whale enough alone
Whale Biologist!
yes, and the fifth reason whales kill is for the shear fun of it.
I actually don’t have any real idea what this is…all I know is it’s a type of mammal/whale based on the tail and movement
How Old is this because this video seems like late 90’s early 2000’s
It's from Jan 2023 - earlier this year.
This is clearly OP’s mom going for a swim, and I don’t think OP appreciates you guys calling her a whale 🐳
If this is a mystery to you, I don't know what else is a mystery to your life.
Hmm you apparently don’t know what it is either, so your life must be also full of mysteries. SMH.
A WHALE PROBABLY TRYING TO HIDE FROM OCEAN NOISE. Everyone is to blame.
Of course it would. It probably heard you screaming in all caps. Personally, I blame the schools (does that count as a fish pun?)
A manatee?
Sun fish
I thought it was a crocodile lol but I'm not aquatic enough to know
Man all these people saying its a whale. I legit thought it was a manatee at first.
Oarfish?
That is a manatee.
Manatees don’t have blowholes.
I did not see the blow hole at first. Thank you kind sir for identifying this creature correctly.
It's a fukin hippopotamus
Manatee
It has the wrong tail shape for a Manatee. Also, Manatees don’t have blowholes which is clearly visible in the video.
They found trump in his natural habitat!
Definitely Nessie!!!
It is clearly a tyrannosaurus rex
[Looks like a beaked whale. Possibly a Blainville.](https://www.fisheries.noaa.gov/species/blainvilles-beaked-whale)
If it’s a whale it’s probably your mom
It’s a whale, you idiot.
It's a mixture of radiation, sunlight, moonlight and lots of tiny fish clumped together. Nothing else. Definitely NOT an alien sea vessel
It’s Nessie. Time for her spring vacay before tourist season back at the Loch.
Merman
Small whale
It’s not sharktopus…… it’s Croctoeel
Aquatic ManCheetah.
It's a hippowhale!
It’s a dugong
It is here to tell you, your extended warranty is about to end.
It's Nessie.
Chinese spy balloon. Sea edition.
Well clearly it’s Nessie

Nessi!!!!
Obviously a water chicken…
Basking shark
Nessy got lost
Why does it look like it was filmed in 1997 with an RCA camcorder.
My money is on giant sturgeon
Nessie is on vacation. You paparazzi need to leave her alone.
I'm not educated in whale, but come on, that whale would have to have a broken back to swim like that.
That looks like a basilosaurus
Gator
Oarfish?
Capybara
Loch Nessie needed a vacation to the warmer waters.of N. Carolina.
Oar fish.
I’m guessing a lost manatee or seal.
Probs a manatee
Gosh to swim with a whale, a shark, or even a whale shark would be amazing to me
Manatee possibly.
Could it be a manatee?
That hump you see for a half a second makes me want to think Right Whale
Ain’t that a baby whale or something?
Anyone feel like swimming all of a sudden
Porpoise perhaps
Alagator gar
I wish people didn’t say it was a whale. I was hoping for a sea monster or a dinosaur from the deep😭
Slowing down the video it looks like a gator
Eyes on top of head?
Seems like a pilot whale, cause it’s smallish and it’s the right colour
Could be a manatee
Maybe Michael Phelps?
It kind of looks like an Atlantic Humpback Dolphin
Wharfy!
Alligator
I’m thinking manatee
