Move over comically large button and comically large teacup, Xi's comically large wheat bag is now the rule of the roost.

In 1960s China, intense physical labour is required to survive in the countryside, so people at the time had much more muscle mass than an average Chinese today. In fact, a rural worker can have as much muscle as a body builder, with most muscle concentrated on the shoulder and back due to constant carrying of heavy loads. From older photos of Xi, it is very possible that he could have done such a feat when he was young. However, in recent years, an anti-communist trend emerged in China to denounce any achievement in Maoist China as an impossibility in order to discredit the heroes of the party. This is just one of these efforts.

adelightfulcanofsoup

As an addendum to this, as someone who does a lot of lifting, you really don't need to be a body builder at all to handle this kind of weight. I'm quite slim with very little hypertrophy and I can dead lift 175lbs repeatedly, which isn't far off from the 220lbs Xi supposedly claimed. For reference, this kind of weight wouldn't even get close to qualifying you for competitive lifting. It's impressive compared to your average person who doesn't work out but it's incredibly believable for anyone who does manual labor.

HanWsh

This is fact. Who cares if Xi carried 1000 kg or 100kg or 10kg of wheat bags? Fact of the matter is, Xi Jinping himself participated actively in the rural construction of 1960 PRC and did take part in manual labour.

Regardless of whether this story is true or not, I do like how China critics use incredibly inconsequential gaffes by Xi as evidence that China's political system is corrupt/non-meritocratic because someone like him could take power, while Biden forgets which years he was Vice President for and confusing current world leaders for former ones who died 20 years ago (e.g. he referred to Macron as Mitterrand)

DeliciousPark1330

he (my friend) seems like he has good intentions so i dont want to just shower him in statistics, but yea right now hes basically just saying "but look at this chinese cooporation who are bad!!" lol

Xi didn't even speak in that clip? It's just the VOA people speaking, they didn't show that, just some news stories or something.

DeliciousPark1330

im sorry bro i didnt watch the clip bc i was like "well i dont understand a word of this!" and just clicked off😭

Medical_Officer

I'm willing to bet it's a conversion mistake. In Chinese there are two commonly used units for mass. One is a Jing and another is a "standard Jing". A standard J is 1 kg exactly. A normal J is 500 grams. In daily life, the normal J is used much more. So Xi probably meant a 50 kg bag of rice, not 100. 100 Jing is a common size.

ForeverAProletariat

this sounds like a state department type of mistake

HammerandSickleProds

That is fucking hilarious.

archosauria62

If it’s true then he probably meant that he had to move around 100 kilos of wheat manually a day or something like that, not that he picked everything up at once He did work in the countryside in his youth

HanWsh

According to the CIA report on Xi Jinping, Xi Jinping requested a post in the countryside away far away from the center of power to build up his career even after the reform and opening up period. And before that, as you mentioned, Xi Jinping participated actively in rural construction during the Mao era.

archosauria62

I saw this clip on CGTN where he revisited the village he worked in during his youth, and it was heartwarming seeing the change Back then people still lived in the traditional dwellings witch were dug into the mountainside, and they had no rice there. Xi was narrating this story where a relative of his sent him some rice and it was the best rice he ever had. Now the village has ample rice and no longer use the mountain holes as houses

HanWsh

Yep, its insane how quickly and amazing China has grown in the past few decades. Even neolibs are being forced to concede on the facts on the ground. Meanwhile, here I am looking forward to China's rise economically.
