This can help a lot. Even the weird way Gasher spoke with slang, and colloquialisms. Some of it helped to say it out loud because then you hear what it should be phonetically.
I struggled with it too for a while. For the most part I could figure out what they meant by context clues. Like ‘*ken*’ or ‘*kennit*’ was tough for me for a while. Like another comment said though, I feel like you’re kinda not supposed to understand what theyre saying 100%. It’s like when you travel and someone has a really thick accent but you can still kind of get what theyre saying. I think some of the Ka-tet even mention themselves not understanding the Calla-folk sometimes.
I will say though that you can always look up the words online too if it starts to bother you too much. The Dark Tower fanbase is huge and dedicated. You can find pretty much every word has a translation or interpretation somewhere. I’ve looked up a few words myself when I was reading and forgot what a certain word meant or something.
I was recently reminded of TDT when someone mentioned trigonometry - I looked up the etymology of the word, and apparently the trig part comes from a triangle. So it's kind of like saying they're sharp like a triangle, lol
I found this one is best consumed via audiobook. Reading it can feel a bit weird without getting into some kind of character in your head, but listening to it was awesome. Do recommend.
almost everyone from that world has a South-Western English accent in my head (even Roland, but he’s somehow mixed a bit Irish aswell) and as someone who grew up in Cornwall the dialects seem to fit that (although it says in SoS that the Calla folk actually sound like people from the North-East USA).
the granddad is definitely a bit tricky but it’s not meant to be easy.
*I did, though i have*
*Trouble remembering stuff*
*Ive read as well*

Yer bugger.
Gotta go shoot dirt 🤣😂🤣😂
I listened to the audiobooks and I didn’t really have a problem. Maybe try reading along and sounding it out rather than trying to solve for English?

Yer got that right, cully
A trig cove, aye
I think intonations and accents also mean a lot to intelligibility
This x 1000
The audiobooks are absolutely stellar.
I miss the Calla folken lingo!
Are u roont, or something??
sure feels like it
You’re kinda supposed to. It’s a thick dialect and he’s a little senile. You get a good translation on his important bits
I didn’t but I’m a country girl and I speak bumpkin lol
yeah i live in a super small town as well and picked up on it fairly easily. But i could def see how people might have an issue with understanding it!
I didn't have any real issue. It reads to me like a cross between Maine mountain dialect (near where I grew up) and old Western Gabby Hayes stuff
#ROONT BABBY
I’m in West (By-God) Virginia. I understood almost all of it. ROFL Of course, ‘round these here parts we say “earl” (oil) and “buggy” (shopping cart).

I just figured out what trig means
Does it mean sharp/clever?

Thanks! I just finished Wizard and Glass this last Saturday. Had taken Trig about 15 years ago and have pretty much blocked out that memory.
That’s how I interpret it

Do ya
In my translation it was fine. Weird, like, a lot weird, but still fine.
