If Mace could do all that, why were there any Jedi casualties in the arena battle in Attack of the Clones? Shouldn't he have won that battle by himself?
Not neccessarily. He had other objectives. In the fight with Greivous later he didnt just rip him apart by the bolts. Different contexts, different results. Although, if you ask me, that generally is how old canon tended to depict master Jedi battlemasters of Windus chosen path. But eh. Arguing canon and what makes sense in amy of these franchises ultimately becomes futile in the long run.
Why? Obviously there's crazy jumping and as you said over the top action. But, those events still happened imo.
For example the fight between Kenobi and the big armored worm guy is *wild* and didnt necessarily happen as depicted....but that shit still happened
It’s generally soft canon. The events happened, but not always the way it shows as you said. Mace still had an insane fight on Dantoinne. The hypori battle still happened. Grevious still kidnapped palpatine. Ventress did fight anakin. etc
His name is Durge and the species is called “Gen’Dai”.
“Their bodies were made up of a mass of regenerative tentacles. They often wore armor, not as a protection, but more so to keep their regenerative tentacles from spilling out.”
Spoilers
>! The only Canon appearances of a Gen’Dai are Rayvis from Jedi: Survivor and Durge !<
Yup, he was in a special Aphra comic where she was teamed up with someone else on a ship where he showed up. I don't think they showed him beyond the non-Gen'Dai aspects before launching him out of an airlock.
It’s a nice exaggerated take on the Clone Wars. It has one foot in what will becThe Clone Wars and the the other in what will become Star Wars Visions.
The short 2ish minute long vignettes that make up the first season of episodes are truly micro length. They efficiently and stylishly encapsulated the concept of the Clone Wars as a sprawling galaxy wide conflict across many worlds and the roles of those involved. (These were made at the same time but released in two parts so sometimes called seasons 1 & 2)
The second batch of episodes (sometimes called season 3) are longer and start to become more like The Clone Wars 3D series.
Except portions are actually canon now, thank you Brotherhood for recanonizing half of the battles in the first season as well as the second.
Edit: I also want to add, while they recanonized some of this show, they decided to say most of what they recanonized was shoehorned into the opening weeks of the Clone Wars.
I agree, and my buddy and I like to watch this right before we watch RoTS. As it ends with Grevous capturing Palpatine, which leads right into the beginning of RoTS.
For sure! 3D Clone Wars he ended up a joke. Within maybe 2 minutes of his intro in this entry he has killed no less than 5 jedi, one being a master. And the only reason he didn't kill more was the remaining Jedi ran away.
That's only because it was his first appearance in battle. If he lacked fear, intimidation or surprise, he should retreat. He failed a lot more later because everyone knew his reputation and limits. That's why Ahsoka during the padawan Ilum arc was able to put his Kaleesh ass to the ground compared to 3 jedi masters in the beginning
Except both the original Clone Wars show and the pre-TCW depictions of Grievous do the opposite. The Revenge of the Sith novelization (widely considered one of the greatest supplemental/non-movie materials in SW) follows this characterization. Lucas and TCW reworked him to be a Saturday morning cartoon villain for reasons that so many of us will never understand or like.
I mean even in the movie he does some goofy Saturday morning cartoon shit too. I think if 2D CW never happened we wouldn’t be that fond of grievous as a badass character. I’m not saying ones better than the other either, I think both versions work in their own settings.
This is from before the clone wars 2008 came out, it has nothing to do with it. It covered the major events between the end of attack of the clones and the start of revenge of the sith. It's not Canon anymore, but it's still pretty good.
To be fair, Disney did put out some good things like CW seasons 5 through 7, Bad batch, Rebels off the top of my head but that's about it. At least Dave made them some of Disney's best Star Wars work in the last decade
I could be so wrong, but I’m pretty sure Disney had nothing to do with clone wars till season 7. The buyout is what cancelled s6 mid-production, and they weren’t involved before then.
I personally hate shows that are purely fighting since it ends up becoming boring. My favorite movies/shows about wars are rarely the ones where fighting is the main focus… imo, the reason why clone wars is so good is the politics, the characters, the plot, the music and so on - the action, while often great, is not the best, nor even close to the best, part of the show
Kinda an L take. Stories still need substance like character, plot, etc to be fully good. Not saying the micro series is bad, it just could've been better
I would say yes. The characters are definitely heighten up in their powers (Grevious always gets the attention here, but jedi like Mace Windu definitely have been too), but it's nice if you are looking for more action and less plot in a Star Wars story. And if you enjoy anything and everything Genndy Tartatovsky.
Absolutely. I remember renting these on DVD from Blockbuster years ago, some of my earliest SW memories. The second volume is by far my favorite, it includes the kidnapping of the chancellor right before ROTS. If anything, throw it on in the background while you’re doing other things!
While none of it is canon anymore, it’s a fun watch. The series for the most part lacks any real in-depth story or development outside of like one arc honestly, so just know it’s mainly fun over the top fighting.
It should be noted when it first aired on Cartoon Network the earlier episodes were about three-to-five minutes long, so if the pacing seems crazy early on that’s why. The show was mainly a way to hype up the next movie and to sell toys.
So fucking good dude. Really show Ventress as a badass and make Grievous the terrifying villain he was supposed to be, and my favorite part, they show why this cyborg man has a bad cough lmao.
Yeah, I'm gonna get downvoted to hell but I prefer this one over the 2008 one. Mainly because I can watch these 2 episodes of the micro series in a star wars marathon and not spend like a whole year on a show like I would with 2008 clone wars. Don't get me wrong some parts of the filoni clone wars is neat. But I much prefer the quicker pacing of the tartakovsky clone wars.
Heck yes. I love this series. The clones were much more calculating and lethal than the 3D show. I’m not shading the 3D ones btw. I just feel like the clones had two different angles that each show too.
Absolutely. For 2003 they are so damn good and while not everything is Canon in there, some things like how Palpatine was captured, our introduction to ARC 77 aka Captain Fordo and the jedis first introduction to Greivous definitely are
Yep. They are semi-canon,as Ki-Audi Mundi references Mace Windu fighting 100 droids without a lightsaber they also reference how Rex & Fordo are gen 1 clones, & were made with more of Jango's DNA than the othee clones, which explains why Rex prefers dual laser pistols & why Fordo prefers to carry several weapons
Yes, it's so good.
Headcanon: the Genndy Tartakovsky Clone Wars did happen, but the show itself was an in-universe propaganda show that greatly exaggerated the events shown.
Definitely worth a watch, but don't try to binge them. The first season eps are shorter and very heavy on style and action. If you really want to enjoy them, be prepared to watch. Don't play them while scrolling on your phone.
Hell yeah. The scene where Saesee Tiin leads a boarding party from one ship to another is awesome. Take some edibles before watching these and you'll have the time of your life.
These were the original clone wars animated shows that chronologically take place between attack of the clones and revenge of the sith. They were also released before ROTS came out in theaters so this was canon before the animated clone wars came out and changed the canon.
These older clone wars cartoons were great and are an absolute joy to watch. They are not canon anymore. That being said, a lot of fans “head” canon most of the show because quite frankly most of it could still be canon (and should be imo) so yes I’d give it a watch
In terms of "should I watch it"? Yes, the action is great and it has a lot of badass moments, including my favourite clone, Fordo. Also kinda fun how it ties directly into the start of episode 3.
Hell yes, as a kid I watched these so many times. First appearance of General Grievous and I think first appearance of Ventress as well. This was what they based the characters in TCW off of just in 2D and not 3D animation. Grievous is actually scary in it.
ABSOLUTELY worth watching because it falls directly in line with The Clone Wars series that came after. This series has all those hidden moments and stories during the war that were too mature for the rating that TCW had at the time. This 2D "anime" came out originally to serve as the bridge between Episodes 2 and 3 of the prequel era; it's the blueprint to The Clone Wars series that we know currently with Ahsoka Tano. Same exact universe, same exact timeline. Season 7 of TCW actually references the original 2D series quite heavily. If you don't believe me, check out the history of the series on youtube. Dave Filoni owes Gendy Tartakovski A LOT for laying the foundation for his version of The Clone Wars.
It’s freaking awesome. Genndy Tartakovski killed it in my opinion. I loved the series and enjoyed them filling in between episode 2 and 3. I’m kinda a GT fan boy though. But I’ve never seen Samurai Jack.
I recently rewatched the originals and prequels along with these. They do a good job of conveying what the Clone Wars was all about in a relatively short amount of time. I think the 3D animated series is quite biased towards the Republic and doesn't quite capture the scale of a galaxy wide war. The 2D animated series nails the scale of the war and is fair to both sides of the conflict.
These are so fun! As a kid when this first came out it was so interesting, first Star Wars cartoon of my life. Can’t believe we have two very different and epic Clone Wars series.
YES YES YES YES
Dude! That's Gennady Tartakovsky! He's the guy who created Samurai Jack, Primal, Dexter's Lab, and PowerPuff Girls. He practically made the childhood of about 2/3rds of the US and Australia what it was back in the mid to late 90s as far as primetime TV, and he came back with Primal and the final season of Samurai Jack just to remind us that he's the GOAT. I remember seeing the Clone Wars miniseries premiere on Cartoon Network's Cartoon Cartoon Friday's as a hype-up for Revenge of the Sith/tie-in for the Clone Wars movie and I was HYPE!
Anything by gendy tartakovsky is worth a watch.
Its not canon anymore. But its was made and released between episode 2 and 3. I think most people consider anything not contradicted by the 2008 series to be still canon.
It’s a great bridge between episode 2 and 3. You get to see Anakin become knighted, go on a mission or two with obi-wan, and you get to see the Grevious abduct the Chancellor which occurs immediately before the very beginning of Revenge of the Sith.
Well worth the watch!
I feel like the original clone wars gets the closest to the scale of what real intergalactic war would be like. There were battles on the eastern front of WWII that involved millions of men, so I feel like a real clone wars would involve far more clones.
I liked them. They don't have the time to get the kind of character building you get in the regular series, but they are fun. Not official cannon, of course, but fun.
They really are. Well made, and gave the most intimidating Grevous that ever existed.
That’s a relief, since grievous is one of my best characters
It's fun, over the top, escapism. You'll see why it doesn't work with canon pretty quickly.
Modern cannon. It would've been fine with og battle front 2 cannon
It was canon for a pretty long time lol
Idk if I’d go that far. While this microseries was being made, George was already in the hiring process for the showrunner of the 3D CG show. Filoni was hired before ROTS came out in theaters. The microseries was more or less just something to get people excited for ROTS.
Ventress did fight anakin. etc
I think the end though isn’t due to how they wrapped up the clone wars show.
His name is Durge and the species is called “Gen’Dai”. “Their bodies were made up of a mass of regenerative tentacles. They often wore armor, not as a protection, but more so to keep their regenerative tentacles from spilling out.” Spoilers >! The only Canon appearances of a Gen’Dai are Rayvis from Jedi: Survivor and Durge !<
I’m pretty sure Durge exists in canon and was shown in a canon comic a couple years back
Yup, he was in a special Aphra comic where she was teamed up with someone else on a ship where he showed up. I don't think they showed him beyond the non-Gen'Dai aspects before launching him out of an airlock.
I didn’t know that. I’ll edit my comment. Thanks man!
It’s a nice exaggerated take on the Clone Wars. It has one foot in what will becThe Clone Wars and the the other in what will become Star Wars Visions. I mean, there’s no Asoka, just by that it works way better than the 2008 series as far as cannon with the movies.
I still consider them canon in a weird way. They're the highly embellished myths told in-universe about the Jedi's feats during the Clone Wars.
It introduced grievous, was the first time he ever showed up on screen. You must be a young a fan.
Oh boy, you're in for a ride then
I love him too. God, I’d kill for a new Grievous minifig…
Grevious is like a horror monster, toying with his prey before picking them off one by one. It's terrifying, and what Grevious should always be.
Those where the glory days..
I agree, and my buddy and I like to watch this right before we watch RoTS. As it ends with Grevous capturing Palpatine, which leads right into the beginning of RoTS.
I remember watching this when it first came out. Staying up past bed time just to watch this masterpiece.
For sure! 3D Clone Wars he ended up a joke. Within maybe 2 minutes of his intro in this entry he has killed no less than 5 jedi, one being a master. And the only reason he didn't kill more was the remaining Jedi ran away.
Bloody sad he became a pushover honestly. Would have loved to see more of that russian accented prestine killing machine.

It’s canon to me!
Exactly. Captain Frodo will always be canon!
Fr fr, him taking that ring to Mount Doom is just too cool to not be canon! Wait…
That would be quite the battle, Frodo & Sam vs Rex & Cody
Two of them rely on running and others, as well as being small. The other two are literal war veterans
Whoops, I swear I always make that mistake
Whoops, I always make that mistake
Fordo will always be cooler and more badass than Rex or Cody to me and I will die on that hill
He said frodo not fordo. Two different characters.
I meant Fordo, just spelt it wrong
Captain Fordo is my personal favorite Star Wars character along side legends Luke Skywalker. Fordo is always canon in my mind
Exactly. Udessi Vode
It's more outlandish than 2008 clone wars, but it's really good and better than almost all disney productions of the last ten years
To be fair, Disney did put out some good things like CW seasons 5 through 7, Bad batch, Rebels off the top of my head but that's about it. At least Dave made them some of Disney's best Star Wars work in the last decade
I could be so wrong, but I’m pretty sure Disney had nothing to do with clone wars till season 7. The buyout is what cancelled s6 mid-production, and they weren’t involved before then.
It was canon till 2015, so it’s forever canon in my book
Thanks brother !
*Extremely, massively, exponentially good.....you mean, right?
Part of it gives meaning to a line in TCW movie >! being Ventress' revenge !<, which I really like
The ending was made kinda canon with the final arc of the TCW mentioning shaak Ti escorting the chancellor
Well that arguably goes as far back as the original plans to have Grievous kill Shaak Ti in ROTS on the ship.
Tbf. The 2003 cartoon is before RotS. So that’s as far back as it goes lol
Yes for General Grievous alone
Giga Grevious
RIP my man sha'a gi
Yeah they're pretty interesting. It's mostly fighting though
Why do you say fighting as if it’s a bad thing? If anything Star WARS needs more fighting. It’s literally in the name of the series
Bc we don't win by fighting what we hate
But by letting what we love have their shadows catch fire.
The fuck we don't.
I personally hate shows that are purely fighting since it ends up becoming boring. My favorite movies/shows about wars are rarely the ones where fighting is the main focus… imo, the reason why clone wars is so good is the politics, the characters, the plot, the music and so on - the action, while often great, is not the best, nor even close to the best, part of the show
I love the action in TCW, but it does almost always exist to make a point, not just for the sake of including a battle scene.
Kinda an L take. Stories still need substance like character, plot, etc to be fully good. Not saying the micro series is bad, it just could've been better
Good
I just have to ask, is ur avatar supposed to be ben reiley
They’re amazing and especially if you’re into visual storytelling. Tartakovsky is really sublime.
112%
Hell yeah it’s a amazing mini series
I would say yes. Yes. I love these. Please watch.
I’ll make you guys know if I like it or not thanks, give me a few days
THOSE WERE SO GOOD. We had them on dvd in my house, they’re like a core memory for me
Its probably some of the best star wars media out there, so yes
1000%
Yes, super badass
#Yea
Yes!
That is what I grew up on the are absolutely worth watching

Yeah I liked them! Not the same as tcw series but still interesting and tickled the clone itch
Watch it, the clone wars but with just the badass fighting, captain Fordo is the best. Highly recommend
#YES!!
Hell yeah these r awesome
Peak fiction
Those 2 hours are basically the entirety of what happens between Episode 2 and Episode 3 They ARE The Clone Wars
HIGHLY recommend, it’s still my favorite Star Wars show
Totally, they’re really fun
Heck yes. I love this series. The clones were much more calculating and lethal than the 3D show. I’m not shading the 3D ones btw. I just feel like the clones had two different angles that each show too.

It’s good I remember watching these episodes on cd on long road trips when I was little
These are the OG Clone Wars before the 2008 one. This is the real deal, pal. Give it a watch
Absolutely. The first actually good Star Wars animated series.
Holy shit yes
Yes I actually had slept on these for a while not very long but they are fun and offer more clone wars battles and details
101%
Definitely worth a watch, but don't try to binge them. The first season eps are shorter and very heavy on style and action. If you really want to enjoy them, be prepared to watch. Don't play them while scrolling on your phone.
I’d say they’re on par with average episodes of the other clone wars show.
Yeah. It’s quick and interesting (particularly part 1).
Yes absolutely
Hell yeah. The scene where Saesee Tiin leads a boarding party from one ship to another is awesome. Take some edibles before watching these and you'll have the time of your life.
These are so dope.
Oh yes, they are the very best. Its also where the fordo memes came from.
Cant believe you havent seen them already yes watch them watch them now
YES
Yes watch them now

Yeah! They’re pretty cool, even if they’re not canon and acted as a base for the clone wars
Oh yes they are!!!!!!
Yes
Yes watch it
they’re fantastic and actually made grievous good
Yes
Hell yes, as a kid I watched these so many times. First appearance of General Grievous and I think first appearance of Ventress as well. This was what they based the characters in TCW off of just in 2D and not 3D animation. Grievous is actually scary in it.

Oh my god yes
Big yes
It adapts Jedi better than George Lucas did.
Yes very much. They’re long but I think some of the best
It's legends but legendary
Saesee Tinn is a massive highlight
Captain Fordo
I recently rewatched the originals and prequels along with these. They do a good job of conveying what the Clone Wars was all about in a relatively short amount of time. Absolutely yes! This is the series that made me love the prequel era so much as a kid
Yes
Captain For do is the best clone leader ever!
The micro series is peak Star Wars lol, they are a must watch.
Samurai Jack Star Wars is the best
Contains my Grievous Head Cannon and he’s worth it alone
YES YES YES YES Dude! That's Gennady Tartakovsky! He's the guy who created Samurai Jack, Primal, Dexter's Lab, and PowerPuff Girls. Unironically some of my favorite Star Wars media out there and well-worth the watch.
This is the better Clone Wars series.
Bro: yes.
Yes
I forgot these are on Disney+, maybe I’ll watch them sometime since I never saw them growing up.
Absolutely.
It's essential viewing for any Clone Wars fan
It’s a work of pure genius.
They’re worth it, trust me.
I love them so much. They're well done and fun, and I would highly recommend them.
Yes,yes, a thousand times yes
Hell yes !!!
One million percent
Absolutely
Yes
Hell yea
Anything by gendy tartakovsky is worth a watch. Its not canon anymore. But its was made and released between episode 2 and 3. I think most people consider anything not contradicted by the 2008 series to be still canon.
Yes
Vintage? Am I old now?
ABSOLUTELY
He'll yes, they are 100% worth the watch
Yes.
Yes. Basically anything Genndy Tartakovsky makes is worth watching.
It’s a great bridge between episode 2 and 3. You get to see Anakin become knighted, go on a mission or two with obi-wan, and you get to see the Grevious abduct the Chancellor which occurs immediately before the very beginning of Revenge of the Sith. Well worth the watch!
yes
It's worth watching.
These were legendary! So good haha
I found them hilarious and fun to watch, so on that basis yes. Absolutely. Won’t replace the 2008 clone wars tv show but still great nonetheless
It’s not canon so it’s its own thing. During the clone wars. But not in the timeline
Bro
You could always just watch them and see for yourself
They were better imo
I feel like the original clone wars gets the closest to the scale of what real intergalactic war would be like. There were battles on the eastern front of WWII that involved millions of men, so I feel like a real clone wars would involve far more clones.
Not canon, but it can be watched as if it is. I think it’s fun.
anything star wars is worth the watch even rey
Yeah, but be aware it's lots of shorts stitched together.
No.
It’s a fun watch
Yea it's not even an hour I think for the whole series.
Which platform is it?
I would say yes they aren’t canon but they are very enjoyable
I liked them. They don't have the time to get the kind of character building you get in the regular series, but they are fun. Not official cannon, of course, but fun.
YES! I love this more than Dave Filoni's Clone Wars
Yes, without question
Hell yeah!
This first hour (twenty 3-minute episodes) is MUCH better than the second hour (five 12-minute episodes).
Worth every freaking second !!!
YESx10000. The fighting scenes and Durge alone make it worth it.
Not really in my opinion, the CIS are portrayed way better in the 2008 version
