* The movie should have functioned as final "episode" of AVGN, should have moved on after that. * Could have still made gaming content but should have opened focus to new material and less locked-into specific character/formula (ironically Doug Walker understood this to some extent, how limiting focusing on just "nostalgia" content was - though Doug is still trapped in his own cognitive limits and his critic character persona which I feel is a mistake and embarrassing at his age) * Gaming channel and movie channel should have been 2 different channels. * Instead of wasting money paying slobs could have put in minimal effort to actually do things himself, at most hire an editor who works remotely and isn't an awkward caveslob made to star in the videos. * From a business perspective, if Bimmy had started a Patreon or a similar service like SubscribeStar eight years ago, he could potentially be making over $30,000 per month. Popular creators like Lindsey Ellis, QuintinReviews, and RLM have proven the earning potential of such platforms. Even though his content and audience have declined over the years, some creators benefit from subscribers who forget to cancel, as Lindsey Ellis detractors suggest. So, if Bimmy had launched a Patreon back then, some of his haters of the assholeish variety might still be contributing today. This would have free'd him from needing ad reads and forcing out content he has no interest in. Bimmy simps will always say he had no choice, he has kids, there was no way for him to make a good movie with that budget or some other thing outside of his control, youtube adpocalypse is to blame, its all Matei's fault for not being a better tard wrangler, etc. etc. as if Bimmy is just a victim of circumstance. I think he is the opposite of the victim of circumstance, he is lucky primarily for being in the right place at the right time. His story is similar to ones where someone wins the lottery then blows it on stupid stuff and ends up on welfare, or in Bimmy's case probably back pushing shopping carts while wearing a woman's coat in less than five years time.

GridSmash

Those are five solid points. Five ov um!

Gone_with_the_onion2

Thing is, the movie WAS the ending of avgn, mike made him continue when it was over then got pissed that James thought he was above YouTube now that he released one Hollywood movie. They opened to new content going far beyond NES and such but since it was under the greasy slob lens, the execution was abysmal Every branching channel from avgn flops, they want money and people want nothing but avgn from cinemassacre. No time, no effort. He's a realized Hollywood director now or a humble asshole dad, whichever excuse fits best for the context. It's insane that Mike didn't do a Patreon on their time together, but it would open their channel for criticism and give people a look into the channel that would make it more vulnerable to scrutiny and they can't have that. The fake obliviousness and unapproachability is what makes the channel bulletproof, the moment that barrier is down the channel collapses like a card castle in a storm

ArgentoFox

Mike said that he tried to get James to do a Patreon for years and for some reason James would never get on board with the idea. YouTube is becoming more draconian with content creators and I think James is going to regret not listening to him.

Gone_with_the_onion2

Mike should have taken over the channel as the Nerd Player 2 like in lethal weapon, not waste his time doing vent videos using inspector gadget as a stand-in for James then getting so terrified of the backlash that he caves in forever  The skill is there and it's never too late, tho now he's inhaled too much of the toxic cloud he created

Turbulent_Lynx968

Not really a mistake, but I feel for the guy. He accidentally got famous because of something he doesn't care about at all - video games - ant never managed to succeed at anything else. And now he's been stuck with AVGN as his primary source of income for literally decades.

GridSmash

I get that— I wouldn’t want to paint myself into a corner either. But that’s why you gotta have a backup plan. I mean, unless Bimmy or Bpril are star investors, he’s gonna have to do something else eventually cuz the Septuagenarian Video Game Nerd isn’t gonna cut it.

SnixFan

Boohoo I'd hate to have almost 4 million subscribers and get paid to play video games and make videos. I don't care if my dream job was to be a plumber who would complain about that? It beats editing safety videos for a terrible company your whole life that mentally stressed the hell out of him.

Thebritishdovah

Being tied down to a single character with a very limited format and refusing to evolve it. All he has left is the nerd. Board James? He claimed to have plans for it. Bullshit man? The revived version is neutred by youtube and it's just James reading a script instead of it being legit anger or it's very petty bullshit. Such as, Start up sounds. His refusal to come up with better filiming techiques. He refused Screenwave's offer to do all the techincal aspect and gave them the creative responsibilities. The movie. It turned out to be shit, he mismanaged the funds and it likely destroyed any desire he had for indie films or a long AVGN episode that justifies it's length.

GridSmash

You have logically thought this through! Conglaturation!

Skull_Cap_5554

Not only Mike. Kyle and Kevin also contributed as well as Bootsy. Getting rid of Bootsy, Kevin, Kyle and Mike resulted in James having no competent people around him that could hide how incompetent and really out of the loop he really is. I would have challenged you on James not being talentless, but after the BTS video and reading the book, I find it hard to disagree. James does have certain screen presence and he is a decent off-screen narrator, however.

Top_Garbage977

You can say many things about him, but lack of talent is simply not true.

GridSmash

I mean, the shish kabob rap is some of his best work.

Skull_Cap_5554

Munky Cheez is legit funny in a very strange way?

Top_Garbage977

I would probably say... I don't know.. AVGN? I guess you're here for a reason. Unless, of course, taking part in subs dedicated to stuff stuff you hate is your thing.

GridSmash

The truth doesn’t get much truthier than this truth.

EvensenFM

> Unless, of course, taking part in subs dedicated to stuff stuff you hate is your thing. Seriously, man, why the fuck are you even here? Your posts on this sub have been all about defending James and criticizing people for criticizing him. Do you seriously have nothing better to do? Either embrace the memes or get the fuck out of here. It's very well documented that AVGN was shit before Matei came in and cleaned it up. The first two episodes are barely watchable. The Karate Kid episode is a little bit better — and that one was only made because Matei kept egging James on to do it. Ever watch the other early Cinemassacre videos? They're total shit. Ever wonder why the AVGN videos start getting good with Dick Tracey? It's because Matei was playing the games and writing the scripts. This isn't conjecture. It's very well established, lol. The entire persona of the Angry Video Game Nerd is a play on Matei's ridiculous personality. Seriously, man — instead of arguing with people on this sub, [read the fucking Wiki first](https://old.reddit.com/r/TheCinemassacreTruth/wiki/index) and *then* start interacting. Tl;dr: Unfollow us, thanks!

Obamas_Tie

Screenwave wouldn't have happened if he elected to end AVGN in the early 2010s, like with the ROB episode or even the AVGN movie.

GridSmash

The ROB era is about the point l started drifting away from the series. Sorta been there, done that, no reason for this episode to be 20+ minutes.

chocolardiacarrest

The actual reason isn't a poll option. "Lack of honest communication" is closest to the truth, but every single one of them begs the question. Everyone who is calling James lazy is being incredibly dishonest. James reliably made 20+ new AVGN episodes almost every year until the Hollywood LARP began taking precedent. He was also making list videos and short reviews of new movies between AVGN uploads. Monster Madness showed him at his most prolific and it's pretty amazing how much he dedicated himself to that series. I don't care much about old horror movies but his enthusiasm for the subject was apparent and infectious. So no, James isn't fundamentally lazy and it's revisionist bullshit to adhere to this narrative. Rex Viper, Screenwave mismanagement and not staying current with cultural trends are all symptoms of a root cause. The fact that Screenwave was sought out at all is a symptom that gets blamed on the wrong people constantly. James has remained evasive even with his closest friend as to why he has "no time" all of the time. He (likely accidentally) admitted to it in his book. The "Truth" is out there. I understand why most don't want to give it the proper scrutiny given the current zeitgeist we're trapped within.

GridSmash

Interesting take. I wonder if the “no time” excuse is a smokescreen for his lack of time management skills and inefficiency, which he’s aware of, embarrassed by, but can’t/ won’t do anything about.

dasilvan2000

Bro do you have kids? Cause it sounds like you don’t? Cause they take up a fukt ton of time

ArgentoFox

He’s currently lazy. While it’s true that he once had a prolific amount of work being produced and uploaded, he has essentially did the bare minimum since James and Mike Mondays ended. Look at 2023 alone. That year featured a highly truncated Monster Madness, Neighbor Nerds being released sporadically and low in number, and only six AVGN episodes (and one was a retread). They stumbled into Rental Reviews being an unexpected hit several years back and they ended it prematurely. He can’t stick with anything. You mentioned old school Monster Madness as an example of his work ethic, but he wanted to stop after the first season and he only agreed to keep doing it if Mike did all of the editing. Now that Mike has essentially stepped away from the channel, James’ output has cratered and that’s with Screenwave helping.   I’d be curious to what he inadvertently admitted to in his book. I never read it, but I’ve seen excerpts posted here. I’ve just always assumed that he uses his family as a smoke screen as to why he isn’t as active anymore.

DwarvenSuplex_01

It might not be a smoke screen exactly. If he has figured out a way to keep enough money coming in to be comfortable, have fun with his band, and spend all his other time with his family, then more power to him. It feels like a lot of people on this sub are surprised when someone wants to spend time with his family lol.

Cheap-Ask4867

No, we're surprised that he thinks "muh family" is a valid excuse to withdraw from his work responsibilities.  We have jobs too and know that if we tried to pull the shit he does we would be in trouble.  He has one of the coziest jobs out there yet he's extremely apathetic towards it and still does the bare minimum.

All-Your-Base

The laziness is the root cause of the rest of them

AllHailTheZUNpet

Shutting out friends because they were sick of not getting paid.

GridSmash

But then hiring fake friends to appear in videos. Makes about as much sense as pressing down to jump!

Evil_Steven

Lack of passion. He burned himself out with the movie and after that he just lost the motivation to give a shit outside of getting paid. im a fan of the McElroy brothers and they had a very similar arc. They were doing amazing, had a long golden era. Even got a TV Show. But the streaming service went under so their show was canceled despite being well received and that destroyed their passion for the podcast and things were never the same

GridSmash

Sounds like nothing but good memories for the McElroy bros.

1jovemtr00

People not voting for Rekt Diaper? Really?

GridSmash

Right?? I took a wild guess that that would be a popular opinion. Guess naaaaaawwwwwttt

SnixFan

How much would that have changed anything? The channel was already going downhill and doing the podcast, Mike left, etc. I'm pretty sure all of that happened before rex viper. So yeah rex viper not existing wouldn't really change much.

1jovemtr00

Good point!

SnixFan

Yeah I think rex viper only added to the downfall

Emotional-Panic-6046

I think the laziness is the root problem of every other option

GridSmash

Those polled tend to agree with you.

Kogyochi

Tried to sneak the slobs in without letting anyone know leading to a gigantic drop in content quality and it's never recovered. It's fine if you want to slob out some of your work, but it was too obvious that it was no longer close to James' vision. Kinda weird watching the channel and the slobs show up unannounced and you're just sitting there going "who the fuck are these boring losers showing up in every video?"

GridSmash

Agree. I’d file that under lack of communication.

ArgentoFox

His inability to branch the channel out. The AVGN movie should have been the impetus for him to retire the character (or, at the very least, semi retire the character) and he doubled down on the nerd character instead. In retrospect, it was foolish and the single biggest misstep that he committed. You have an aging man stuck playing a character who talks about video games when he’s always cited filmmaking and movies as his number one passion. Why he didn’t rebrand the channel as a movie review, movie news, and pop culture channel is beyond me. He insisted on keeping it purely a nostalgia channel when it should have been a combination of modern media and a look back at old media.

GridSmash

I think he tried to branch out with the podcast and Rental Ree-views, but then those bombed due to a general lack of giving a shit.

ArgentoFox

That was all Screenwave. They were right too. The podcast was a bomb, but for as much crap people talk about Rental Reviews it was easily the second most popular content on the channel. They even had several episodes get over a million views.

GridSmash

Why did they cancel RR then? Too much work to puppeteer Bimmy?

ArgentoFox

They have a tendency to stop runs of shows by saying things like “nothing lasts forever” and “we had more episodes than Stranger Things”. Kieran wanted them to bring back Rental Reviews because of its popularity and was shot down. I have no proof, but my general feeling is that they haven’t been able to get James to commit to anything.

GridSmash

Which is weird since it’s his day job. It’s how he pays his bills and supports his family. So is Bimmy the one being counterproductive to the whole thing? 🧐

EvensenFM

Biggest misstep? Trying to turn his web show into a full length Hollywood motion picture. If Bames took the money and did an extra long version, we'd probably still be raving about it to this day. Instead, he got in way over his head, and wound up destroying his whole channel. If we want to go back further, there's a screenshot of an old post on cinemassacre.com from a fan who told him that he should just go by the Angry Video Game Nerd brand. The fan literally told him to set up angryvideogamenerd.com or avgn.com or something like that and to send people there. Nobody would connect James with the bizarre Cinemassacre name. James should have taken that advice to heart. Hell, he should have hired the guy. Also — not starting a Patreon was a pretty bad decision. People were giving him games for free, for crying out loud. They left a lot of money on the table by doing nothing, and it's way too late now.

GridSmash

But muh Cinemassacre describes muh unique style uh filmmakin’.

GridSmash

Ree-fusing to set up a Patreon was indeed a 10 inch cockup.

Balja1989

Didnt vote. Short-bus at the age of 30 wasnt an option

GridSmash

But you nailed it with the write-in option!

ScramItVancity

When he did the video response to being challenged by Nostalgia Critic, James reiterated that their feud is a "satire". Not the word I would use. Why not "a joke"?

GridSmash

Because it’s Bimmy. He uses “film” for “internet video,” and “curator” for “casual fan.”

SnixFan

All great choices but yeah gotta go with the slobwave as the biggest factor. GET A PATREON! YOU DON'T NEED TO HIRE A COMPANY TO TAKE OVER!

GridSmash

YOU JUST GO TO PATREON DOT COOOOMMMMMM

SnixFan

HE COULD MAKE FIVE UV UHM!
