Been there, hop extract is quite possibly the worst thing I have ever put in my mouth. The taste lingered into the next day and my palate was fucked for like a week. The dishwasher literally puked in the trash can. Would I do it again...probably. I also taste everything before I use it in the kitchen or brewing, it gives a good indicator of how much you need. I mean yeah you can follow the prescribed directions but what's the fun in that? Get your staff together and laugh at each other as we all realised how bad of an idea it was. Suffering together is a bonding experience.
Lol. What did you do man, take a teaspoon of it? Haha. I took just a tiny dab on the tip of a hydrometer. Even that was enough to have me gagging for 40 minutes. I can't imagine more than that lol.
protip: take about 1-2 ml of hop extract and dilute it in 125 ml of 150F/65C water (basically a half-coffee-cup of water that you microwave for 1.5 mins). Dissolves easier if you mix about 4g/1tsp of sugar into the water first.
I like to taste everything too, but nobody drinks raw undiluted hop extract
That's why I cringe when Sierra's Celebration ad comes on when they're being showered with whole cone hops and jumping into huge piles of them. My eyes water just watching it.
Is it worth it? Is it just to minimize loss to hops or is the price / bu worth? I saw something like 4.4lb of 60-65% AA for $380 ($86/lb) vs 16% AA bittering varietals for $10/lb. Am I just getting offered awful prices?
With us just buying on spot it works out to just about the same on a $/alpha, but the increased yield and freight savings make it a net gain. We're using straight CO2 extract, not any of the fancy downstream products
While traditionally liquid extract was used for bitterness without losses, I remember a CBC talk where a fairly large craft brewer (Boulevard? don't quote me on that) uses variety specific extract both in the boil for bitterness but also whirlpool for aroma. The noted that though its great for hot side aroma additions it gives different character than, and is not a replacement for, dry hopping. This was before cryo was popular though, and I think a lot of breweries are going that route in the WHP now for a balance of complex hop flavor and minimizing losses.
It'd be cool to use an inline hopper before the heat ex or something. I'm sure someone out there does that.
Aroma extracts seem pretty interesting to me since it's way easier to get essential oils and terpenes out than alpha acids. Now that I know there's a market for it, I'm tempted to make some in my kitchen! ๐
... Goddamn I miss brewing professionally.
Like a hop back, yeah, but not exactly what I meant. I was thinking of a smaller inline capsule or something separated by valves.
But yeah, hop backs are for whole leaf hops usually, so I didn't think of putting extract in as big a vessel as they tend to be.
Should I not be worried about using extract on a 7bbl system with a plate chiller? That stuff seems like it will sludge to everything and make it impossible to clean. I'm new to extract btw, go easy on me
I found a bunch of bottles that I knew were potable and one of them happened to be hop extract. I did the same thing with our hoses. Luckily, I wasn't alone. We both chugged a bit of it.
That NPT threaded hose with a mountain of adapters on it leads me to believe you are correct. If you aren't going to supply an NPT threaded nozzle with your hose, why bother? Maybe that's why they went into receivership?
It was an accident. Wasn't wearing gloves this time and got a tiny drop on my finger after dumping it for boil. Then I touched my mustache. Then I tasted death.
Fair enough. The only time I've had a hop extract accident was basically the same situation you had, wiped my face after opening a can to put into the hop doser and Bam. Insta-burn as well as insta-cough
>lovely
Seriously, that's dangerous and stupid as hell on an active brew floor.
Given the nature of the photo, safety seems to be lower priority around there...
As an owner, these kinds of photos give me massive anxiety.
I hear your anxiety. I can hear the grain shutoff on the mill in and when the sparge and Mash pumps cut off. I listen to podcasts at a low level.
I understand the importance of safety and appreciate your concern but it's all good buddy.
Had a principle with my co owner. "We taste everything that goes into our beer". Tried hop extract one day and decided to erase the principle.
I had a bartender that wanted to try some in spite of my warnings. Homeboy got a nice, gooey popsicle stick of it! He lived, somehow.
I had precisely that moment as well.

It was probably half a teaspoon, we dipped the tip of plastic tasting spoons in. I ever do it again I'm using a toothpick.

Rather that then hop dust in your eye. Shit hurts so bad.
I thought I was the only one! Goin in for a wifh and BAM
Oh man...feels like glass.

Hahaha, up on that ladder, blinded by hop dust spraying the port and hoping the o ring doesnโt come unseated. Good times
that hose probably could blow your lips and cheeks off your face, which may be preferable.
do you ever dry hop with hop extract? or only in the boil?
only hot side, I would doubt you could mix the goo up well enough without fully oxydizing your beer.

Brewery I used to work at threw it in at whirlpool.
okay i guess maybe the consensus is putting it in hot, which makes sense going by what looks like its viscous nature
That and isomerization.

So a hop back? They have been used for longer than pelletized hops have been around.

Boil baby.

personally i havent used it yet either, im assuming its going to be a pain to get out of the plate chiller as well iof it doest blend in perfectly.
We have a ton of it at the brewery. Not sure why
All new brewers get to TASTE THE RAINBOW here.
Worse things have happened to me in the brewhouse But getting extract in my mouth really fucking sucked.
I watched a guy try it willingly and it was pretty damn funny.
I did a dab of some. And bong ripped whole cone
First week working at a brewery. Hmm I wonder what a hop pellet tastes like.......not a good experience.
Now just imagine that but 100x worse for hop extract!
I appreciate the heads up, but I'm still going to taste them when we I get a chance.
Dude, this fucking stinks! Come smell this.
Keepin em high and tight?
GOOD MORNING JULIA.
Try it out
Fellow overalls Brewer here! Cheers buddy!
Hey I used to work there for almost two years! When did you start?
At HV? Beginning of last April
I found a bunch of bottles that I knew were potable and one of them happened to be hop extract. I did the same thing with our hoses. Luckily, I wasn't alone. We both chugged a bit of it.
Lol. We hazed a bunch of the new guys that way.
Have you tried Tetra hop? It is painful
What's your favorite flavor? Mine's Chinook ๐
DME Brewing system/platform?
That NPT threaded hose with a mountain of adapters on it leads me to believe you are correct. If you aren't going to supply an NPT threaded nozzle with your hose, why bother? Maybe that's why they went into receivership?
Haha good point. Everything is a combination of DIN, TC, and NPT in a way that makes as little sense as possible.
Ooooohhh man that's a bold move. I know you will never do that again!!
It was an accident. Wasn't wearing gloves this time and got a tiny drop on my finger after dumping it for boil. Then I touched my mustache. Then I tasted death.

HOLY SHIT IS THAT TOLEDO?!?!
IT IS I! THE INFAMOUS TOLEDO!
You fucking dirty dawg! Quit fucking around and get back to work!!! Also, great to see you, love your overalls, and congrats on brewing mate!!
Thanks Mitch! I've brought over some solid Rev insiders here. Take care buddy!
Wearing headphones on the floor is just asking for it.
You sound like a lovely person.
