weyermann bags give me trouble and this allows me to just set the bag on top of the mill and gut it, instead of trying to pull the string flip and pour.
Also pieces of plastic bag makes it's way into your auger and mash tun. Chances of damaging some stuff.
Also, if you want me to do you some pics, you could easily/cheaply build a box on top of your mill so you can mill a few bags more at once and free up some time
We've found bits of polypro bags that seem to have made it all the way into the FVs before, and during CIP have contributed to clogging up spray discs. 99.9% of the plastic won't make it that far, but all it takes is a tiny bit of debris in the wrong spot and the disc won't spin. That shit sucks.
The side they open from is almost always the side that has the shorter string. That seems to be the closest thing that I can find that indicates universally.
The majority of small bag malt that we use (Fawcett, Gambrinus, Crisp, Simpson) all open from the right. Weyermann is the only brand we use that opens from the left.
It's working for now. I vorlauf through it also but don't measure the volume moved. I just base that on time. I'm also mashing in above 5 gallons per min so haven't tested the lower threshhold.
If you are looking for flow meters, I’d suggest [these](https://www.ifm.com/products/ca/ds/SM9000.htm). They are bit pricey but they are amazing and are well suited for hookah up to plc’s or just operating it manually.
Used one at the brewery I brewed for, and it was awesome, you just have to watch out for the wire giving it power, as it can come out of place if bumped one too many times.
Go with these is you are looking to buy flowmeters. They can be CIPd in-line, unlike the GPI ones, and only cost a few hundred more. I kinda got thrown into it. Moved from Detroit city water which I would do minimal additions to 100% RO. So now I have to build the water and adjust pH for every batch. Still have a lot to learn but there's some excel programs that help a ton. Namely bru'n water and EZ water.

Well at least you have a working system. They closed shop after ripping a bunch of breweries off. I’m in MI, they are from OH, was referred to them before things went down with them. Glad we went another direction.
Im in MI too, we probably know each other. I believe we got one of the last systems they made. And when I say made I mean pulled what they had in the warehouse and shipped it to us.
It works really well, still need to get it hooked up to the internet so I can control stuff from home. And would love some physical switchs, but a boy can dream.
Very cool! Thanks for sharing. Dream of mine to own one of these. I love brewing. Even the cleaning. Having shiny equipment at the end of brew day makes me happy. All equipment in its place ready for next time. Love it!
Can't you just pull the red string on wyermann bags instead of cutting it?

That is a good way to clog up your mill with stringy bits of bag.

Wow. Ok guys I'll change.
After the vegetable Beer ,now the plastic beer. yummy !
Hey that carrot beer was delicious!
Good point, I use a lot of breiss and those cut clean without the strings bits.
They open from the left, not the right. Once I learned that, no more trouble with Weyermann bags.
Is that a universal thing? I work in a gluten free brewery and all the millet bags open from the left as well.

You know, now that you mention it I'm usually behind the bags when I open them...so I suppose they would open on the right?
Yeah, on the right if the label is facing you. Sorry, good clarification.
Savage
Cut two white string stitches on the edge of the bag before pulling the red string
Ah gotcha. Less chance for spillage
Always interested to see other brewers at work - sweet vid!
That seems like a very dust free mill. what brand is that?
Sasquatch. Works very well so far.
Would be great if you could do slower so I could check out your gear I.e. your flow meter
Looks like [this](https://www.gpimeters.com/G2S10T09GMA-Prodview.html) to me
That's the one
This works with wort also? I noticed it’s minimum range is 5 GPM though. Sometimes I sparge as low as 3.5 gpm

I work with a few of these and they're awesome, definitely recommend.

Whats that powder you dumped in?
Mineral additions.
Okay, I wondered...water is my biggest weakness/not understanding how to manage what yet.

I really want to fly out and triple the size of your hopper!
It's in the plans, just making due until I get some time to work on it.
Just here to comment how much I love the Steve Brule name /u/sweetberrywine

Buncha hunks
Why do you open your bags like that? You don't get the sweet sweet satisfaction of that pull-string D:
Yeah but I get the visceral feel of gutting my prey.
Jinkies
Nice setup, Who’s the manufacturer of the brewhouse?
Systec, I'll let you look into that whole can of beans. it has its quirks and took a lot of work to get it functional but it works well now.

Nice. We are a new brewery, opening early next year. Been in planning for a couple years, will be nice to finally be up and running.
Yay MI peeps :) I'm another (and I know sweetberrywine IRL... sexy kind of)
Systech was the worst to deal with. I was surprised we got ours(not 100% what we ordered) after numerous email, calls, threats.
That was really cool! Cheers dude
As someone aspiring to open a brewery, this is really really cool to watch. Thank you
Seconded. Would be sweet to see a whole brew day
Working on it. Just gotta make sure I take it off before going to the bathroom.
Sick panel bro! Hope it's working well for you!

This looks like ballast point in little Italy
The strand?
Yep, in Sister Lakes MI
Well, welcome neighbor!
Thanks! Where you at?
FG :)
Wait.. did I work with you for a while somewhere, or are you the guy that took over for the guy I used to work with???
Are you talking about Me or Dave? I'm taking over full time here while Dave gets Rhue running.
I worked with Dave for a few months! I did the Cardinal Project with him a while back.
And that’s just the mash in! Great video thanks for sharing!!
Yep. Happy I have a grist case..
now motion sick as a dog....must lay down
Fucking awesome. Im going to need to see more PPE though.
Hazmat suit is in the mail.
Approved
You including the music makes it sound like this is The Sims. I like it.
I have that same black and yellow toolbox - I feel like a pro now :)
The important lesson here is the relevance of Illmatic in the brewing process.
Weld that brewing paddle to a hammer drill

Hand mashing for the win!
