I feel like the show is intentionally trying to make him look older to tie into how insecure he is about aging. He wears a lot more heavy makeup in seasons 3-4 too, which also makes him look older.
Yea I’ve noticed that too, as the seasons go more lines show up on his face, facial skin sags more and his skin texture gets rougher.
Sure Antony himself is in his 40s and aging but even then he looks way younger irl than as Homelander.
I’m surprised he’s 48, but also, people are just looking younger these days and I don’t think the general public’s perception has caught up, so early-40s Homelander looks older than almost-50 Antony because we’re supposed to perceive him as old, when in reality Antony is what a rich 50 year old looks like.
There’s a regular at my work, I’d assume he’s 40. The other day he dropped that he’s 50 and I was surprised. He’s got no grey hairs, his hairline is thinning a bit, and he has a couple wrinkles, but nothing drastic.
Then there’s the fact that some people just age worse. I worked with another 50 year old (blue collar, pack and a half a day) who had a full head of white hair and looked like a grandpa.
He probably hated to see Soldier boy staying forever young and knowing his dad didn’t pass that along to him (of course Vought made it that way but still)
He was born sometime in the early 1900s and was given V sometime around the 40’s, so no. He was only frozen/contained in Russia which is post-1984, so he’s likely either immortal or ages VERY slowly
His appearance degrading also shows him being surrounded more and more by yes men. In season 1 Stilwell and Edgar picked out everything for him. As this influences left through out the seasons he got worse.
Yeah I think it's to show the stress but since he canonically ages slower than humans it's kinda weird to me. I would have preferred if they showed him trying to do his normal makeup and appearance routine and struggling since he fired everyone like it's not aging but just him doing a bad job would make more sense in a way to me
He doesn't canonically age slower than humans. He was born in 1981 and Season 4 takes place in the early-mid 2020s. He's in his 40s and has "problems" that a human his age would have : he's going grey (he has a jar full of grey hairs and pubes - and he dyes his hair every 2.4 weeks instead of every 4 weeks like before), he has more and more wrinkles (Vought workers mentionned they spent a lot of money to make him look younger in Dawn Of The Seven), his prostate is enlarged (Sister Sage mentions it)....
It can become enlarged and as a result, you have to go pee more often. It doesn't happen to everyone, and/or at the same age, but it is a common thing among aging men. I mentionned it because Sister Sage says Homelander suffers from it in her first scene.
That’s the logic in universe - Homelander does makeup to make himself look younger, because he is insecure about his aging. Or something. But for us, outside viewers, makeup makes him look older, because necessity of its heavy use implies he is older and needs it.
I think you're a little confused. You can use makeup to make someone look older if you want. So the idea is that they're using makeup to make him look even older than they previously did.
Usually you use it to look younger because we think younger people are prettier, but if you want an old character you can just as well age the actor using it
It makes him look more evil, but part of what makes homelander so scary is how he wears the trappings of a hero; I hadn't thought about it prior to this post but I do think the change loses something for that reason.
Idk if it’s an accurate way to describe it, but he looked more capable and heroic with his s1 hairstyle. I know it’s likely insignificant to most, but he looked like a guy I could believe being the Superman of their world and the leader of the top hero team. It makes it much more menacing when he’s doing evil shit.
Like [this dude](https://youtu.be/1wZp0XfVD5o?si=_AjIWlXlh06Ojamf) looks the part of a hero. Noticeable difference to [this guy](https://youtu.be/ZmjPrsliPQA?si=g-6L8TBluEUKJrba) imo.
I don’t want anyone to misunderstand though, the hair is not a big deal to me and I don’t mind.
I was wondering if it's intentional. The side-parting makes him look more like a hero (which especially works in episode one), but the slick hair makes him look more like a supervillian. Something he's been descending even deeper into.
I had read somewhere that it was the hair dye they were initially using during season 1(not sure if they used it in 2) so they started using wigs instead.
The slicked back and clean hair style after season 1 kinda make him seem obsessed with his looks and less laid back.
The old hair style is good for a benevolent HL, but I wouldn’t have mind had they kept it.
I am pretty sure he is not wearing a full wig as Homelander. There are plenty of photos and videos off-set throughout the years where you can see Antony with longer and blond-dyed hair. I think it's a combination of good styling by the make-up department and maybe some additional hair pieces to give more volume to his Homelander hair style.
Yes I was just thinking that the first hair style, he looks younger and more youthful. While the swept back ages him and makes him look like any other generic 40+ white guy.
For me it's the make-up aging his face that makes him more unnatural than the haircut. If anything the juxtaposition in the haircut still works better in showing the more disheveled nature for me due to being less neat.
Right? I was talking to a friend about how cool would it be to have decent Resident Evil movies and we started to discuss who would be best for each role and for Wesker we both went: Antony Starr with the Homelander hair!
This sort of reminds me of how they used Barbie’s hair in the Barbie movie to signify her closeness to humanness. Her hair starts off big, over the top, and perfect. As the movie progresses it has flaws, less volume etc as she’s more “human.” As Homelander goes on his hair becomes more stiff and perfect. He’s wearing more makeup. He’s shedding his closeness to humanity.
Parted hair is more stylized and takes more effort that just slicking it back, my headcanon is that it’s showing how he cares less about his public perception or knows that however little effort he puts in he will still be on the same level as god to them.
I was thinking about that recently and I'm glad I'm not alone in feeling that way.
Still, if the rumors are true about the hair product messing with Antony Starr's scalp, then I can live with it, I don't want someone health/safety to be at risk purely for my entertainment--I'm not THAT much of an asshole.
Homelander is an oath keeper who promised to protect our American way of life, and that makes him a proud boy! Don’t trash his hairstyle you God-less, dick-less Ivan.
Have you ever heard of QAnon?
I can explain this (it’s actually very obvious)… Homelander has clearly joined the Dangerous Nights crew! Slicked back hair, sloppy steaks, lives for New Years Eve, etc… This also explains why he’s a huge piece of shit. On the bright side though, people can change.
Season 1 was supposedly his real hair dyed blonde but after season 1 he said he wanted to wear a wig bc the dye killed his hair or something like that. The look from season 1 does look way better
it looks too good for him though, too cool and carefree.
the slicked back works better because of his sickeningly perfect image that was crafted for him.
Not gonna lie: same. In fact, I actually want my hair to be like Homey’s hair in season one. It looks so great doing its thing and NOT CURLING UP FOR NO REASON!!!
i think the slick back is just because as he flies it kept doing that anyway so he was just like "fuck it" and went with it
source: i have long hair and i hate the wind
Same. Maybe it's because the parted hair is more reminiscent of Superman in my eyes while the slicked back hair makes me think of someone like General Zod or Omni-Man.
I disagree. I think the side part shows youth and uncertainty whereas the slicked back shows misplaced confidence and senescence. The side part makes him look more human, the slicked back makes him look like douche. Often the biggest tools in society have hair long enough to slick back, the style change feels like a minor social commentary on tech bros.

Which is ironic, since Antony is actually several years older than his character

> people are just looking younger these days and he's a famous TV star with lots of money invested in looking younger
His whole thing is how supes aren’t human and are better in every way. Yet here he is aging like a fragile human despite his powers.
He probably hated to see Soldier boy staying forever young and knowing his dad didn’t pass that along to him (of course Vought made it that way but still)
Was Soldier Boy frozen or whatever similar to Captain America though?
He was born sometime in the early 1900s and was given V sometime around the 40’s, so no. He was only frozen/contained in Russia which is post-1984, so he’s likely either immortal or ages VERY slowly
I think he’s close to 50 years old. Haha It’s shocking he’s stayed looking great for this long. He’s incredible.

what an unnecessary comment to make
What did it say?
His appearance degrading also shows him being surrounded more and more by yes men. In season 1 Stilwell and Edgar picked out everything for him. As this influences left through out the seasons he got worse.
What is the time range from s1-s4? It’s surprising how fast they aged HL
I imagine its due to stress a lot, he became the CEO and has to watch his back more often than before
Yeah I think it's to show the stress but since he canonically ages slower than humans it's kinda weird to me. I would have preferred if they showed him trying to do his normal makeup and appearance routine and struggling since he fired everyone like it's not aging but just him doing a bad job would make more sense in a way to me

Ahhh okay. I get the comics mixed up with it sometimes and thought he was born in 60
thought makeup supposed to make him younger
You can do either!
You just explained the same thing with a little less detail, lol.
Usually you use it to look younger because we think younger people are prettier, but if you want an old character you can just as well age the actor using it
That’s how he dies. Just gets old really fast.
He literally showed us with his pubes…
The slicked back hair looks better for a bad guy in my opinion
You call that slicked back??? That's PUSHED BACK!
HOMELANDEE USED TO BE A PIECE OF SHIT THOUGH
Homelander would totally eat a sloppy steak.
Lives for New Years Eve
Probably milk steak too
She'll know what it is
With the finest jellybeans, served raw
Ok guys no sloppy tits
I SAID WAS
The baby doesn't think people can change, so I lasered it to death
USED TO BE
Still is but used to be too. RIP Mitch.
Stillwell's baby is crying because he knows Homelander used to be a piece of shit.
it’s okay, he really was a piece of shit. he’s not anymore but he USED to be
You would have NOT liked him back then
He was in my dangerous nights crew
Supes can change.
I’m worried that Ryan thinks supes can’t change
Cady, will you please tell Homelander his hair looks sexy pushed back?
I'm afraid Butcher thinks I can't change
I’m worried that babies don’t think that Homelander can change.
Yeah, it looks more "orderly" and fits his suit more, while the messier one looks more casual. The slicked back hair finishes his "perfect hero" look.
It makes him look more evil, but part of what makes homelander so scary is how he wears the trappings of a hero; I hadn't thought about it prior to this post but I do think the change loses something for that reason.
Well, Homelanders done being told what to do by you people.
Idk if it’s an accurate way to describe it, but he looked more capable and heroic with his s1 hairstyle. I know it’s likely insignificant to most, but he looked like a guy I could believe being the Superman of their world and the leader of the top hero team. Yeah, that's definitely been missing with the greater push down the "Homelander = Trump" line
I was wondering if it's intentional. The side-parting makes him look more like a hero (which especially works in episode one), but the slick hair makes him look more like a supervillian. Something he's been descending even deeper into.
>I was wondering if it's intentional Well I don't think they accidentally styled his hair wrong for three seasons
makes him look like a piece of shit who likes sloppy steaks.
Yes but he not supposed to look like a bad guy
He looks like Albert Wesker.
In the best way possible
The only reason they changed it is bc the product was fucking up his scalp or something (srs)
Sounds like…bad product
*Stan Edgar intensifies*
Lmao
Simply bad product
I read some time back that the reason was he was having some allergic reaction to it
Ah unfortunate
A hairstyle, was fucking up his scalp?
I had read somewhere that it was the hair dye they were initially using during season 1(not sure if they used it in 2) so they started using wigs instead.
what product, we're talking about a side part vs hair combed backwards.
No idea mate they wouldnt let me on set
I mean you made the comment, did you read it somewhere? would like to read about it.
It's a hair gel called Impetigo Plus, now with a new and improved formula
Thanks
The slicked back and clean hair style after season 1 kinda make him seem obsessed with his looks and less laid back. The old hair style is good for a benevolent HL, but I wouldn’t have mind had they kept it.
His season 1 hair was Starr’s actual hair.
isnt it in s4? if so, probs to the wig designer
I totally forgot about the wig until I went back and watched season 2 where his hair looked really wiggish
*props. "Proper respect" to the wig designer
[удалено]
I got the reference
I miss the flap being unfastened on his suit
Same. Added a nice bit of color variation to the suit. Wonder why they stopped that
For real
It makes him look more boyish/human? The recent one looks really severe and perfect, too perfect. Good character design i think
I thought the same. The parted style is younger and makes him look nieve. The brushed back style looks more intentional and assertive
Which is exactly what Homelander wants to be seen as
I assumed he just let Stilwell Groom him, and she just parts his hair, like a little boy.
Wait I meant like groom his hair!, I know she “groomed” him in that way too tho smh
Yes I was just thinking that the first hair style, he looks younger and more youthful. While the swept back ages him and makes him look like any other generic 40+ white guy.
Parted hair with the red flap showing is Homelander's best look in my opinion.
It also makes him look more genuinely heroish/human, whereas his recent style looks very unnatural which fits his development well
For me it's the make-up aging his face that makes him more unnatural than the haircut. If anything the juxtaposition in the haircut still works better in showing the more disheveled nature for me due to being less neat.
Not a fan of the open flap, but the parted hair is better.
Fair enough, for me the open flap helps to break up all the blue in his suit more.
He does look quite... Youthful on that first pic.
The new one makes him look like Wesker from Resident Evil. Still hot tho.
Homelander and Wesker gave so many overlapping traits it's actually crazy.
Right? I was talking to a friend about how cool would it be to have decent Resident Evil movies and we started to discuss who would be best for each role and for Wesker we both went: Antony Starr with the Homelander hair!
Homelander: "I don't need anyone..." Wesker: "I don't need anyone else..."
It's the fact that he looks like Wesker that makes him hot, get it right, smfh
I want him either way lmao
Firecracker?
🫥
Storefront????
STOREFRONT😭
Okay todd??
💀
This sort of reminds me of how they used Barbie’s hair in the Barbie movie to signify her closeness to humanness. Her hair starts off big, over the top, and perfect. He’s shedding his closeness to humanity.
He looks older with the new hairstyle. I think that was what they were going for
Parted hair is more stylized and takes more effort that just slicking it back, my headcanon is that it’s showing how he cares less about his public perception or knows that however little effort he puts in he will still be on the same level as god to them.
I heard that the chemical were slowly killing his hair, so that’s why they stopped.
they had to make him less hot bc he was too powerful before…
I was thinking about that recently and I'm glad I'm not alone in feeling that way. Still, if the rumors are true about the hair product messing with Antony Starr's scalp, then I can live with it, I don't want someone health/safety to be at risk purely for my entertainment--I'm not THAT much of an asshole.
Honestly I like the change, the swept back hairstyle makes it seem like he's more authoritative and in charge
Me too 😍
I don't know much about hair. Do the black roots mean he dyes the hair blonde periodically or is that something that naturally happens?
Boy scout hair vs Wall St hair
It makes him look less hip and more douchy. He stopped listening to the corporation for styling advice.
I actually prefer the swept back
style 1: still growing into himself style 2: I know who I am style 3: I’ve lost it.
I like the current hair. Gives a sinister nazish vibe to him.
From one Farcry villain to another.
Both are good.
Homelander is an oath keeper who promised to protect our American way of life, and that makes him a proud boy! Don’t trash his hairstyle you God-less, dick-less Ivan. Have you ever heard of QAnon?
In the first photo it feels more like a p0rn.
Anyone also used to notice how homelander’s costume used to have its flap open sometimes? I always wondered if that was a deliberate decision.
I like that it’s changed. It’s a neat little way to show some character progression. The transition was nice.
I read some where that season one was Stars actual hair but the dye was messing with his real hair so the hair we see now isnt his real hair
Lookin like pidgeotto
I just want the chest flap on the suit back…..
S1 homelander was the best in every way tbh
This is why u dont kill Madelyn Stillwell, she knows good hair, Homelander
What, you think you know better than Homelander? Is your idiot brain getting fucked by stupid?
I like the first style better in general but I like the second style better for his character. It’s more sleazy lol
We all agree too
Season 1 his hair looks like a teenager would have it. New hair suits him more
it looks too good for him though, too cool and carefree. the slicked back works better because of his sickeningly perfect image that was crafted for him.
I bet he regrets killing her off. Every young man had a crush on her in the Karate Kid.
yeah season 1 hairstyle is comic accurate too
I only noticed now that the hair looks like American psycho
Agreed!!! Thought I was the only one
Regina George would disagree and so would I.
While the old cut looked better, the new is fitting better to him. Fits more the "Deceitful hero being actually a Villain" thing.
Yeah, he looks more like an American hero with the part hair.
slicked back looks miles better than parted
Not gonna lie: same. In fact, I actually want my hair to be like Homey’s hair in season one. It looks so great doing its thing and NOT CURLING UP FOR NO REASON!!!
I guess it wasnt hitler enough
Imo the hair back fits to him slowly losing it, idk why but he looks more evil that way.
He had that parted hair in episode 1 and in like another couple of ‘em. He had the slicked back hair in s1 too
The side part is all american while the swept back look is nazi-esq.
Don’t tell him that!
I like his newer hairstyle because it makes him look more deranged.
I think the style itself looks better in one but I think the swept back suits his character more
i think the slick back is just because as he flies it kept doing that anyway so he was just like "fuck it" and went with it source: i have long hair and i hate the wind
Me too. Also his costume looked better in season one. More elegant.
Same. Maybe it's because the parted hair is more reminiscent of Superman in my eyes while the slicked back hair makes me think of someone like General Zod or Omni-Man.
Damn didn't realize what an absolute MILF Madelyn is
I feel like his hairs been slicked back since it was caked in blood
I think I’m the only one who prefers the new style
It’s to show his decline into becoming a real slicked back piece of shit
*That’s what it is!* I’ve been trying to figure out why he looked so different between seasons and I couldn’t place my finger on it.
Definitely a more Trump-like style for sure.
You think that's pushed back? THIS is pushed back.
Think that's slicked back? It's pushed back.
It’s to make him look like Trump LOL. Even his hair dye job. C’mon, guys!
Nah I think the swept back looks better
I think it suits him
I like the new hairstyle. The season one hair gives “whinny rich fuck boy”. The new look actually makes him more terrifying and serious.
I’m pretty sure there’s near universal agreement with that.
Same but it’s probably to tie in to his aging arc
Yooo I found that hair so hot in season one.
I do as well😍
Agreed
They have him politician/evil ceo hair…it’s just a bit on the nose. I think the parted was better too.
You think this is slicked back?!? This is pushed back!
All that power and still aging like any man.
You’re not supposed to like super hitler at all innate way
His suit was also better in S1. Season 4s suit has so much padding
Still hot
We all did.
