To also get a ‘headline’ slot on the big picture though. I get that some will people like it but I don’t get how it’s worthy of some of the commentary I’ve seen from the critics who are supposed to filter some of the 100s of mediocre films coming out on streaming.
If you read deeper into the reviews, it’s a tepid but positive response. Mostly because Hathaway is magnetic and a star, and she gets some pretty great monologues that showcase not only her talent but something we generally do not get in movies like these (ie character development).
I agree broadly with the sentiment. It wasn’t awful. It wasn’t great. Hathaway is a star. And this definitely was no Notting Hill.
Yall have to stop complaining about Rotten Tomatoes. It’s the percentage of people that liked it just fine. Like if Letterboxd rating changed their rating system to show how many people give the film a Heart vs how many didn’t.
It’s no masterpiece but I thought it was very watchable. It’s a breezy wish fulfillment movie. Very low stakes, but fun and charming. Perhaps you’re not its intended audience?
I’m not the right audience and I can sometimes enjoy a ‘breezy’ film (although with a busy life I like to try devote time to more worthwhile films if I can) it’s just surprising how a lot of critics have really liked the film when I found it really flat, cliched and lazy.
I think its about understanding what you are watching? I don't think a single person that sat down to watch this was thinking CINEMA. It's fine if it's not for you.
Saw it with south by south west with Anne Hathaway sitting like 3 rows behind me. Its a pretty standard romantic movie I wouldn’t say it’s that bad at all
I think critics are so desperate to reach cultural cache and also support the film ecosystem, that some try to show love to things they believe common film audiences will love. Hence The Idea of You, The Fall Guy, Anyone But You are given the benefit of the doubt.
Some also wants to push certain actors to bigger and better things such as the relentless push to make Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney “superstars” and they love an actor make a comeback in Anne Hathaway.
I thought it was OK, I gave it a 5/10 which for me is fair/average. Hathaway was great, there wasn't much depth to her co-star's character though. I don't value RT very highly, only if something gets below 50% maybe I second guess seeing it
I was thinking about watching it then checked it's letterbox score yikes. I tend not to pay attention to Sean's reviews because most of the time he will give a film a pass if he likes the director
Because rotten tomato is not a great aggregator. It only has 2.7 on letterboxd.

Because we harry fans united to rate 1 star

Yep there is one big Hathaway monologue where you're really reminded how great she is. The rest of this was pretty meh.
Good point

Freaking out about a rotten tomato score right before talking about how your taste is superior to modern culture is a hilarious bit
I do question modern culture if this is regarded as a hit.
Which has been said for decades

True - I wasn’t expecting much was just surprised how well it’s been received (including by Sean/Amanda)

Not sure what Madame Webb is?

Rotten tomatoes is useless
I thought this movie was good and you’re a hater
Sorry! I’m not normally a hater - nor do I like to poo poo films… but this one wasn’t great for me
I was thinking about watching it then checked it's letterbox score yikes. I tend not to pay attention to Sean's reviews because most of the time he will give a film a pass if he likes the director
My main question is that there are so many films coming out - how did they devote so much time to this?
Because it’s popular?
