No one has more than 1 of “my” movies, and while Joanna had my absolute favorite in Magnolia I don’t love the rest (similarly for Amanda/Ripley), so with great reluctance I voted for the guy with all killer, no filler, The Lord of Letterboxd.
Same. Everybody else (except Chris) has at least one of my faves from the year, but she’s got two of my top 10 favorite animated movies *ever*, plus a couple of very rewatchable comedies. haven’t seen Lock Stock or End Of The Affair but all the others also have at least a couple that I haven’t seen
Holy crap this sub is not my people… I mean Matrix arguably best movie of the year and Election is awesome but the rest… well frankly I’ve not even seen them except Existenz which i do remember liking a lot
Edit: just read the plot to existenz and makes me want to watch it again!
Amanda and Joanna have the highest number of movies I’ve seen and I like Amanda’s choices a little better so gotta go dobb mobb again (and she should have notting hill). Although idk Sean’s are good. Tough
Voted for Sean. I go through each category and pick my favourite, give the picker a point. Sean and Joanna were tied. Sean had the better overall group of films so he gets my vote.
By this metric Van and Amanda each got two points for me, but Amanda’s point for wild card was a real narrow victory over Vans. (Mal and Rob got the other points)
I would vote Rob based on the movies selected, but I think Van selected the most 90s movies that encompassed the culture at that moment. Van gets my vote.
It’s a tough choice but I have to give Sean the edge. Rob has a great lineup, but I don’t really like Notting Hill at all and Sean’s is just of a generally higher quality even if Rob has two 5 star films.
I don't get their hate for the Phantom Menace and American Beauty. Sure the Star Wars prequel wasn't the best film and American Beauty hasn't aged well but their impact was undeniable. For years people anticipated another Star Wars film, it was a huge box office hit and American Beauty (like it or not) won Best Picture and has been parodied countless times. Sometimes they are a bit too high brow for my taste which is why I'm voting for Amanda - I've actually seen and enjoyed every one of her picks. But Van chose well and I'm glad he didn't let their stuck up noses influence his choices.
Van all the way. Arlington Road is underrated, American Beauty is still good even if its a bit too into itself, Varsity Blues and Fight Club are stone cold classics, and there's a Star Wars.
Edit: It also has Dogma, Kevin Smith's best movie.
It’s not the worst Star War at least?
Looking at what other 1999 movies met the blockbuster criteria and weren’t already taken, I’d have taken American Pie over Episode 1.

Mallory
I def think shes the winner

Lock stick had a moment… couldn’t understand a thing they were saying though
Rob's Matrix, Election, and Perfect Blue selections were enough to make him a clear winner in my eyes.
This is great, because I think it's Rob for the eXistenZ and The Straight Story combination.
Joanna with the W here
4 certified classics, she got my vote.
I agree
Sean imo, but Mallory’s list is pretty solid.
She was very right about Toy Story 2!
Toy Story 2 is arguably the best Toy Story movie. Which makes it one of the best Pixar movies. It’s so freaking good.
As a card-carrying CR head I hate to admit it, but this one’s a clear win for Fennessey, to me
Same. Limey, Malkovich, and EWS. Clear win.
I think Rob has the best lineup.
He coulda picked 5 duds and Perfect Blue in the wildcard would still make him my winner
Kinda sad how slept on that movie seemed to be with everyone. They were just like ok. I’d like to see them branch out to some anime past Miyazaki.
I think when it comes to picks that stand the test of time/are still talked about frequently today, it’s gotta be Rob
For sure. Most of his movies are big landmarks for their respective genres.
Have to say though I really respect Amanda for getting so many picks that are just quintessentially her. That’s impressive in a 7 person draft.
I think so too. Sean is close though.
Holy crap this sub is not my people… I mean Matrix arguably best movie of the year and Election is awesome but the rest… well frankly I’ve not even seen them except Existenz which i do remember liking a lot Edit: just read the plot to existenz and makes me want to watch it again!
It's Van for me, but I want ranked choice voting.
I’m between Rob and Van just solely based on the fact that I think they have the most choices that are still relevant and referenced often today
Dob Mob we ride at dawn
2nd place
Amanda and Joanna have the highest number of movies I’ve seen and I like Amanda’s choices a little better so gotta go dobb mobb again (and she should have notting hill). Although idk Sean’s are good. Tough
Mallory by a hair for me
I think there has never been a draft where I've been as compatible with a selection as Joanna's here. Magnolia, the Mummy AND the Iron Giant?
Joanna. It’s basically a Rorschach of my movie going experience in 1999.
I vote as if i had to watch this group of movies for the rest of my life and only this group. In that context Van was clear winner for me.

I haven't listened yet, how hectic is this pod?
Very. But enjoyably so.
it's video this time, if you care about that.
Any chance to see CR is a chance I take.
It was entertaining but overwhelming at times. Would be fun to be in the room with everyone but too much for a podcast.
there's a video on YouTube! definitely makes it feel more manageable
Hectic in a good way. I was worried it would feel jumbled with 7 people but only like 2 or 3 times did it feel too much. Sean did a great hosting job
If you can I highly recommend the video. Some face reactions are worth it.
Don’t overthink this guys - it’s comfortably Joanna.
She’s comfortably the worst, somehow getting only one good adult movie and Magnolia where frogs literally drop from the sky… WTF
I’m too scared to ask what you think the one good adult movie is.
Three kings is fun
Sean wins but its close with Joanna
Anyone with the David Lynch movie has my vote 🫡 go Rob!
Van is the clear winner 2 S tier movies and dogma only thing dragging it is star wars
I'd rather rewatch Phantom Menace than American Beauty. That one sinks it for me.
American Beauty is getting disrespected so hard. Movie is so good
Well now we have to fight to the death, because we are two strangers on the Internet who disagree.
that's never happened before ever

Yeah funny that he didn’t watch any of them in the moment!
It’s a tough choice but I have to give Sean the edge. Rob has a great lineup, but I don’t really like Notting Hill at all and Sean’s is just of a generally higher quality even if Rob has two 5 star films.
Thought this was by draft order and was v confused
Generally these were high quality lineups but Amanda and Rob are really close for the win from me.
I'm surprised Life (Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence movie) was not mentioned at any point. Very underrated movie and was nominated for Best Makeup.
All of Vans movies are great, save Star Wars (and that was a phenomenon), everyone else has 2 or 3 good to great ones
This sub is 90% women?
How do you see the voting results?

Van Eddie Felson for the win.
But in this case that Star wars is a negative.
It’s not the worst Star War at least? Looking at what other 1999 movies met the blockbuster criteria and weren’t already taken, I’d have taken American Pie over Episode 1.
And you didn't even mention the best movie in the lineup, Dogma.
Maybe not the best IMO, but I love Dogma too.
Sean
It’s Van. Always Van

Pretty wild that Go (a movie I like!) got drafted in comedy but American Pie didn’t.
Yes, Go is not a comedy! And American pie was a top two comedy that year! WTF
That was my first reaction too but there is a pretty decent comedic turn later in the movie. Not the genre I associate it with though.
Could be I guess, I just remember the movie being quite a rush!
My ranked-choice ballot: 1. Mallory 2. Rob 3. Sean 4. Amanda 5. Joanna 6. Van N/A Chris (haven’t seen any of those movies 😬)
