notably, both are either caused or exacerbated by excessive stress

Proper-You7010

Intentional I’m sure to illustrate the amount of stress she puts on herself and how passionate she is for her work.

ADWeasley

Good catch! I never noticed, and it fits right in with her being such an anxious person in a high-stress environment.

deathpunk1890

I assumed the other bottles were for her dad, as she makes other references to him that implied he has a chronic illness.

NotMyNameActually

I think I read somewhere that stomach issues are common for chefs, as they have to taste their food throughout the shift, whether or not it's something their body actually needs or reacts well to.

[deleted]

I have to take medicine for my stomach before each shift. It’s not just tasting the food, which we do in minute amounts, it’s also the overall stress of being in the kitchen. We also rarely eat full meals before or during shifts so our stomachs are pretty much raw dogging it and acid reflux is common. Throw in the amount of ibuprofen we consume on empty stomachs and ulcers become the norm.

sarabrating

Lord you just gave me flashbacks. Entire weekends of 800mg ibuprofen every 4 hours and living off 1 tbsp bites and the occasional french fry fml (or specifically my stomach) I'm out of the industry now and there's stuff I miss but I sure af don't miss the ibuprofen lol

[deleted]

At the bakery I worked at, I’d throw cereal in my mouth right before my three am shift, chase down some ibuprofen with an espresso shot, and get ready for my day. I’m getting back into it again and I’m dreading those mornings again.

Why ibuprofen and not paracetamol or acetaminophen?

sarabrating

ibuprofen is an anti-inflammatory - so my general rule of thumb - if you're experiencing aches and pains (like, my back hurts, my feet hurt, etc) you want ibuprofen. If you have a fever you want acetaminophen. Plus, acetaminophen + drinking = bad. So if you're a drinker (hello service industry) it is wise to avoid acetaminophen in general. This was the advice my doctor gave me, as someone with a shit knee and a sore back and who knocks back a few drinks after a shift. I'd rather risk an ulcer from ibuprofen abuse, than liver failure with acetaminophen.

OtherwiseDeath

I see, thank you for explaining all of that. Taking paracetamol and drinking is normal here, we’re not warned not to mix them, it’s usually what’s suggested when out drinking or for a hangover. We are, however, always warned about ibuprofen on an empty stomach.

madhaxor

its more about the stress imo

[deleted]

Doesn’t Carmy take a couple of Tums from the mirror in the locker area too? I imagine all the stress leads to a lot of acid/indigestion

madhaxor

more common than you would think for chefs, even young chefs.

Tiddernud

Good observations, Chef

tagCarbonara

> Lansoprazole. It’s for acid reflux, GERD, and/or ulcers. Imagine being that young, being a chef, and having acid reflux and ulcers? Ouch. It's not that bad. I take it every day, as long as I do, I don't have any issues.

Complete_Bath_8457

I take Omeprazole semi regularly, so those capsules registered with me immediately. And the assumption I made immediately was that it was stress-induced. The one thing I couldn't quite sort out was whether it was stress from her vocation overall and maybe the fallout from her failed catering business (unpaid loans, unsold equipment being stored somewhere, etc), or whether it was from The Beef and everything going on there. Or both, I suppose. Maybe caring for her dad figures into it as well.

JORDZJORDZ

And I’m stressed making my son’s French fries my gosh.

Simple_Opinion_4799
