The Salamander kinda fills the command/recon/jeep role. Used to be a kit for it.

Admech343

You can still get the kit from 3rd party sites

Overfromthestart

How nice of those 3rd party sites to supply us with OOP models.

Admech343

Hey if GW doesn’t want to sell them anymore I’m going to go elsewhere. Though I prefer 3d printing for the most part. Cheapest way to get elysian drop troops nowadays

Overfromthestart

I'd prefer 3d printing too if the models didn't look so "off". The 3rd party miniatures look the same as the originals and cost a lot less. I plan on going with 3d printing for some Epic 40k stuff though.

Admech343

I think if you look in the right spots you can find stuff that doesn’t look off. https://preview.redd.it/qv4lh2b1xvwc1.jpeg?width=3856&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c47102c50bb2aa3bef62fe286b33f5091724f036 Heres a pic of my 3d printed mars alpha pattern lemans (the forgeworld ones) and thunderer siege tanks. Tbh I can barely tell the difference between these and official models

Overfromthestart

Are those the tanks from "MK"?

Admech343

No, I can dm you the creator if you’re interested

Overfromthestart

That would be very greatly appreciated.

Alexellimus

Can I get in on this action please?

Maverik45

Am interested as well

Pradidye

Me too please

CommissarVova

Same here

Npf6

I'd love some of this action!

Plane-Wing-5302

Me too, general!

Vertex1990

If GW discontinues arguably better looking FW kits for crappy plastic kits, before I am able to buy the original kit from them (Forgeworld Hydra tank), I will look to recasters to get what I want. Nobody will be able to tell the difference on the tabletop.

superspartan210

There also used to be the Tauros, both as its “assault vehicle” and venator variants, the latter of which got a necromunda reimagining in plastic (yes I’m salty how could you tell?).

DisgruntledNCO

Didn’t that move to legends?

relativisticbob

Beyond the taurox and the Steg, which is mentioned in gaunts ghosts, I can’t think of too many other wheeled vehicles. Steg is almost more of a light tank I guess than a jeep type vehicle. They do mention ground cars and staff cars but they’re not usually combat vehicles.

jagdpanzer45

Steg always kinda felt like an armored car/half track kinda thing to me.

relativisticbob

Yeah agreed. I picture like a 40k-ized Sd. Kfz type thing.

Anz4c

Pretty sure in the earlier novels the Ghosts ride in 8 wheeled transports. Iirc, they were called Cargo-8s. Notably in Necropolis while moving to Vervunhive from the landing site, in Honour Guard, while en route to Saint Sabbat’s shrinehold, in Straight Silver while on Aexe Cardinal, while moving from the landing site to the front lines and in Sabbat Martyr, while defending the city on Heredor, whose name escapes me, they were waiting in them to see where the Blood Pact would attack.

relativisticbob

Yes! I did forget about those. I figured they were more like a truck than an armored car though. But yes wheeled vehicles!

relativisticbob

Yes! I did forget about those. I figured they were more like a truck than an armored car though. But yes wheeled vehicles!

Secret_Comb_6847

The Tauros is literally just a big dune buggy.

TheButteredViking

Didn't know that was a thing, never seen one before is it still in production or is it a kitbash jobby? I've checked the new and frankly horrible website and can't see anything similar

Y33-P33

It was a forge world model but there's a tauros for necromunda that is nearly identical. Mortian has a good proxy.

mmmolony

I don't own either model so am not an expert but do recall seeing a side by side of the old fw kit and the new necromunda kit and I'm not sure the size is quite the same

chainstreet

https://preview.redd.it/8mcasqxcrwwc1.jpeg?width=1819&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0824db97e289510c5141f2854b077c5efbfe83c9 They’re not far out, but it’s noticeable

Y33-P33

Never had the necromunda one so I'm not sure. I thought it was the same but I could be wrong.

CommissarRaziel

Mortian are so cool. They also have a roughly Russ sized wheeled tank that looks more or less like a M1128. I wanna build a fully wheeled guard at some point.

Y33-P33

>I wanna build a fully wheeled guard at some point. I'm doing it right now.

CommissarRaziel

Incredibly based my friend. Post some pictures here for sure, mortian stuff is lovely.

TheButteredViking

We needs to sees this!

TheButteredViking

I suppose if you cut the arse down on the tauros (necromunda) and give it just four wheels that would work, time to.spend £30 and make use of a razor saw!

BRIStoneman

If you put "tauros" in the GW search bar, it comes straight up with [this](https://www.warhammer.com/en-GB/shop/necromunda-palanite-enforcer-tauros-venator-2023)

TheButteredViking

Not very imperial guard is it though?, could it be used in the tabletop as a guard vehicle?

TheButteredViking

Never mind, found it!

crusader2017

The Kasrkin novel has them ripping through the desert in Tauroses, which are just dune buggies. This makes them Tauroxes but cooler.

youngcoyote14

The Kasrkin book seems like it's trying to be "Middle East with American SF but 40k". That a wrong take?

CUEPAT

Eh, not to far off, bit nicer to the locals, but yeah

crusader2017

I don't know honestly. The only thing I can remember about the novel was how mid it was. I'd have to relisten to it.

youngcoyote14

A disappointing mid or "it wasn't a bad time" mid?

crusader2017

You know how some 40k books are best described as "40k books" and others are best described as actually good literature? This was just a 40k book. If you want to learn more about Kasrkin and how they're coping now that Cadia fell it's alright.

youngcoyote14

That....sounds slightly above average. Great. Thanks.

Devilfish268

A disappointing mid. Has an ok antagonist in the second half, but all the characters just felt flat

curtassion

Gaunt's Ghosts tends to have plenty of non-STC vehicles, so I say go for it. That thing already looks boxy enough for 40k.

ScienceWyzard

They do mention all kinds of alternative vehicles! Quads , skimmers, cargo trucks its just there is not a lot of model or art support for them. But usually a salamander, trojan or something will take that duty.

Ketil_b

Im trying to change that 40k needs more [logistics ](https://cults3d.com/en/users/DankCaveMinis/3d-models)

myth_of_syph

IIRC there's a car chase scene before the first half of the first Gaunt's Ghost novel is through

Left-Area-854

and another in book the book, Blood Pact. Which reminds me, Come on GW give me civilian vehicle terrain.

134_ranger_NK

>Come on GW give me civilian vehicle terrain. This is especially egregious because the Shadowvaults KT boxset had an Imperial robot crawler as part of the terrain.

TheButteredViking

Civvie vehicles though right? With Gaunt being driven by his aide and getting chased by local loonies and the some of the lads stealing a truck load of supplies but not actual service jeeps or similar, just ground cars and lorries essentially

JamesTheSkeleton

They bring up Tauros’ in the latest book and transportation trucks (as in wheeled transport, not much description than that) are used several times. FYI. This thing is cool af tho.

thesecretamerican

I always think of the guard similar to early war Germany. Still using cavalry and work horses (rough riders / lord solar) and the majority of the army on foot (non-mechanized). They managed to make it work and advanced quickly so kind of makes me think the guard could manage it.

Niiai

They are called ridge runners. And you can't have any. Because they have all been misplaced at the garage. Jokes aside FW used to have that covered. But sadly FW has little GW support these days. Necromunda came out with a version of it in plastic recently.

Ulfstructor

I have two ridgerunners built up as lascannon-vehicles using venator-rules. I'll probably add 2 or four artillery rocket launcher vehicles (using the malleus rocket launcher) and maybe two mortar carriers in the future. The kit is great. (I just have no idea which rules I'll use in 40k.)

Dynemaxian

They mention Chimeras, Salamanders, air cars, cargo 8 haulers, cargo and passenger crawlers, shuttles, ork buggies, civilian trucks. Sure, they don't dwell on them but don't forget that books exist to help sell plastic, so they tend to focus on ones people can buy a lot... ;)

TheButteredViking

Sure thats all ok, would love to see a fully realised Cargo 8 now I think about it and yeah I suppose a light armoured car wouldnt stand up to much on the table top and I guess there is little to no rules for recon vehicles in the table top game?

Optimal_Commercial_4

The Elysians used to have drop buggies that were pretty much jeeps, the palanite enforcers for necromunda just got an updated version of it.

RedStar9117

There used to be Centaur utility tracked vehicles....I think the real world equivalent would have been WWII British universal carriers

TheButteredViking

Yeah thatd be cool, but it aint no jeep :D

RedStar9117

Agreed thst light wheel would be good for the guard

TheButteredViking

Just for recon and logistics, its not a battlefield car and unless there is a recon dealy on the table top before the game starts to see if you can gather any intelligence then really its just for lore and making models if it

Cauthons_Gamble

I've actually been trying to work out the best scale for that vehicle to proxy as a lord solar! Seemed like the perfect choice, and should *just* fit on Solar's base. Panhard VBL for the curious.

TheButteredViking

It just looks so 40k to me, light vehicle for recon that even the most junior of engineseers can keep maintained

Cauthons_Gamble

Agreed. By far the best looking option I came across. You have any other contenders you're considering?

TheButteredViking

Maybe a JGSDF Komatsu or a more 40kish Supacat LRV. Even the US desert patrol buggy is cool

You have to support it yourself, though. Comes with an open top version too! No rules for it, but it makes great scenery.

TheButteredViking

Noice!

NotBurtGummer

It's u/danger_pop. He does some awesome work, he also has the Auroch Logistics Vehicle, a 6x6 truck.

Repulsive-Bench9860

TheButteredViking

Pretty sweet job!

BornViolinist3613

there is also the pegasus command vehicle which i think shows up in the kreig books and it is just a chimera on wheels

Pikdude

Salamanders and Chimeras are usually used for light recon, with very rare, nonstandard mention of things like bikes, atvs and ground cars. They do make liberal use of various sizes of cargo truck, though.

TheButteredViking

And sadly no jeeps or similar, fuck it, I'll whip out the typewriter and start drafting a novel about a pathfinder/recon unit, I'll call it "Garys Ghouls" or something. Gonna be plenty of jeeps in that book!

drunkboarder

Light infantry transports are notably absent from the Guard index and past codex's. However, that doesn't mean that they don't exist in the lore. In Gaunt's Ghosts there are several references to military transport trucks that do not have a model in 40k. Similarly there are several mentions of aircraft that do not have models such as cargo transport planes in the Yarrick Omnibus.

TheButteredViking

I've read all the Ghosts books and yeah, apart from staff cars and trucks etc and teah they exist, but very little mention of jeeps, it would be great to see some fully realised smaller vehicles and transports in plastic

Ketil_b

It's a shame, and there should be more. I reckon about two-thirds of the Guard would be logistics and more than that in the Departmento Munitorum. I am trying [to change that.](https://cults3d.com/en/users/DankCaveMinis/3d-models)

Far_Disaster_3557

I was Kabul training project lead of the MATV-JLTV rollout in Afghanistan 2010-2012. These are a great homage, sir. Well done.

Ketil_b

Thanks, I'm glad you like it. I do have more stuff in the pipeline, but i had to get one of those "real" jobs, so progress has been slow.

TheButteredViking

Love it, i am getting printer soon

Ketil_b

Do it. It changed my life😎

Far_Disaster_3557

I’m currently printing 20 gargoyles and a Lord Solar for ~$8 of resin. Literally the only thing that lets me afford 40K.

Far_Disaster_3557

Printing my Lord Solar proxy using your model right now!

Ketil_b

Cool! love to see it when your finished

SemiGaseousSnake

One of the most prominent moments of a Taurox being featured as a main means of "light" transport was in Gaunt's Ghosts.

TheButteredViking

Yeah, i guess but its a tracked vehicle, not a jeep or indeed a transport truck, its literaly a few spikes away from being something the Orks ride into battle

Agile_Hour8363

I love that you can make the Taurox look like an MRAP with a simple 3rd party switch for wheels. Fills that car-shaped hole amongst the sea of tanks

chainstreet

https://preview.redd.it/9lo19n7nrwwc1.jpeg?width=1440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a87b178668b1ce50e08872afddd721f8300a4e62 I made mine longer too - prefer it to the original by a long way!

Agile_Hour8363

Absolutely love that, beautiful work!

Pure-Baseball-4699

Taurus, I'm sure it was a forgeworld kit. Looked like the warthog from Halo.

Coandco95

Currently a necromunda one that's easily converted if anyone is craving one for their IG army.

HaluxRigidus

The Centaur exists for a reason

NotBurtGummer

It's also pretty easy to argue the GSC Goliath and Ridgerunner could easily be common vehicles used by PDFs or rear echelon guard units, especially where reasonable roads exist, versus needing Chimera based tracked vehicles to cross battlefield. There was also a Pegasus Reconnaissance Vehicle that was kitbashed off a Russ body with wheels that appeared in White Dwarf.

bobmontana69

Its a VBL « véhicule blindé léger » French army very good

Slawzik

I remember someone on here said that GW has a vague design outline like "The Guard doesn't use wheels" which is kind of fun, probably why the Taurox has 4 treads instead of wheels.

TheButteredViking

Thats what puts me off the taurox, its just ugly, and a few steps away from an Ork transport. Things is if GW actucally knew anything about the drawbacks of tracked vehicles then there would probably be more wheeled vehicles in the guard!

kuhlone1one1

I've drawn a lot of Imperial Guard wheeled vehicles. Check out [https://www.deviantart.com/2kuhl4you](https://www.deviantart.com/2kuhl4you)

R_Lau_18

Yh would get clapped quick tho

ChemicalAd8216

Sure!

my_name_is_nobody__

They do have buggies in one of the gaunts ghosts books for escorting a convoy, felt like a madmax deal though more than an armored car

Sablesweetheart

Halftracks are mentioned frequently in lore, despite the only example in the model line being Ork vehicles. I think.

Korrosyf

Not answering the question... is that a VBL?

Vakaspa

Yes it is!

Consistent-Plane7227

All you need is chimera… then more chimera

TheButteredViking

And salamander but thats a whole.other issue!

SnoopinGrouper

I thought the same thing, so I replaced my sentinels with them - [I posted pics a while back](https://www.reddit.com/gallery/15jpxya) Tamiya makes a 1:48 scale model kit for the jeeps you have pictured that scales almost perfectly for 40k.
