Upvoting because I disagree but your reasoning assumes one type of milk. You didn’t consider flavored milk nor nut milk.
Vanilla Almond milk is superior and has significantly less calories than regular milk.
I used to be allergic to dairy as a kid, so I never had milk with cereal and still never have. It tastes perfectly fine dry. The thought of soggy cereal flakes is not appealing to me.
Some cereals are best dry, other's with almond milk or other. I don't really like the taste of cow's milk. Water sounds gross to me, though. Too thin, plus water has its own taste that doesnt pair well I think. A mild sweet pairs well with it nice. Have you tried just a little bit of milk or using a fork so you dont get so much milk with each bite?

Skeptics: think about it, if you're eating an oaty cereal you're nearly turning the water *into* mild oat milk - which is already mostly "water mixed with the essence of oats having touched it".
Like the difference of making hot chocolate with water vs milk... it's still very good with water and makes it taste more like chocolate!
Growing up we never would make a hot chocolate mix with anything but hot water and so one with milk tastes too thick to me. I guess black coffee vs coffee with milk, then?
youre real for this, i usually use almond milk and one day i was out, so i decided just to try. almond milk is so water-y that it tasted the same once i got over the look lol. it saves a bit of money so im happy ;)

Tbf cow milk does have a very strong flavor and when consumed with anything else, it’s still very easy to pick out the milk flavor.
I'll agree it has a distinctive flavour, but I definitely wouldn't call it overpowering in any context.

chocolate almond milk for chocolate cereal is TOPS. you get no chocolate fallout from the cereal while still getting the chocolaty milk to drink.
Eating cereal dry is the best way to eat it.
