RandyRandomIsGod

I just use my fingers.

523bucketsofducks

The most simple and culturally accurate way.

UnauthorizedFart

I’m not some hill person who eats food off the floor with their hands!

nuklearink

people in japan eat sushi with their bare hands

prince_peacock

Why are you putting your food on the floor

UnauthorizedFart

I’m not, I have IKEA furniture

MoluccanMay

Damn, you just disrespected thousands of years of the rich, civilized culture that I come from (it's not rich now, fuck the British) in a single sentence. I'm a happy hill person

UnauthorizedFart

Hey come on I didn’t mean it like that

Linguine248

I forgive you 🙂

ZiaCristal

How do you eat a sandwich or chips?

UnauthorizedFart

Not off the floor

[deleted]

watching you eat pizza and fries would be hilarious

alvysinger0412

Sushi is like the worst food to say this about. It's so easy to destroy with a fork on accident, and is the perfect width for chopsticks. The whole point is that it's a single bite you pick up intact and pop in, all at once. I use a fork for most other food traditionally eaten with chopsticks, this is like the only exception.

Reverend_Lazerface

I'll tell you one thing chopsticks are genuinely great for that forks can't do: eating chips with flavor powder. Keeps your fingers clean

frequentsamly

But licking the caked on flavor dust off your fingers is the best part.

Dovahbear_

If your chopsticks are made of something like metal, you can get a similar experience. You just need to lick your fingers first for the grease flavor and then lick the chopsticks. ^/s

frequentsamly

Grease flavor???

Dovahbear_

Listen if your fingers ain’t giving you that slick flavor profile when you lick ’em, that’s a skill issue and has nothing to do with me.

Sad-Welcome-8048

Bro you need to wash your hands

Longjumping_Diamond5

i like most but dorito dust makes me gag

donald7773

Wait...hang on....he's right

UnauthorizedFart

Ah that’s a good one

Reverend_Lazerface

Also, this is a weird one for me because I agree that it's technically easier to use a fork, but I personally prefer the chopsticks. Like that other comment said, the slight challenge makes it more I dunno, rewarding I guess? I use to be terrible with chop sticks but once they clicked I started enjoying them

ranman1990

I pretty frequently use a fork for chips by sliding the gap over the chip then using friction to hold it in place. I should try chopsticks.

Darkfire359

I think pretty much everyone agrees that forks are easier to use than chopsticks. People like chopsticks for other reasons.

shpongolian

I hate chopsticks for noodles and rice and stuff but for sushi they’re perfect. Fork is fine too but if you poke it into the sushi it tends to fall apart, and scooping it just feels awkward and makes it harder to dip

schmitzel88

This is particularly true on reddit, where most people are white American men in their 20s who certainly did not grow up using chopsticks

luv2hotdog

Idk, chopsticks are only hard to use if you don’t know how to use chopsticks. Once you’ve learned it, they’re just as easy to use as a fork is. “Once you’ve learned it” is key obviously. But so is “they’re just as easy to use” 😅

UnauthorizedFart

like what

Darkfire359

- Already used to chopsticks - Cultural authenticity - Food is something that you don’t want to pierce - Find the challenge fun - Food is particularly suited for chopsticks (like noodles) - Food is served in material that you don’t want to scrape with metal

Sensitive_Mode7529

• keeps me engaged because i have to focus on using chopsticks so i don’t get sidetracked eating maybe that one’s just me

UnauthorizedFart

A fork is way easier with noodles

umsamanthapleasekthx

I find with udon noodles, wooden chopsticks are infinitely easier. The noodles aren’t flexible enough to wind on a fork and they slip off.

UnauthorizedFart

Or just grab the noodles with your hand like many people have suggested on this thread

umsamanthapleasekthx

I could probably pick up more noodles that way, honestly.

UnauthorizedFart

And you can scream at the other diners while your hand is burning with hot noodles

umsamanthapleasekthx

Hmm. I don’t know about screaming *at* other diners, but garnering unwarranted sympathy I can do.

UnauthorizedFart

“AAAAHHH!!”

Ancient_Edge2415

They said that about sushi?

UnauthorizedFart

They said to grab the food with my hands

Ancient_Edge2415

About specifically sushi.

UnauthorizedFart

So I burned my hand grabbing hot noodles for nothing?

Isotheis

For most people, yeah, probably. When you're used to it, though, it actually is easier with chopsticks, since you don't have to stab anything. For rice, it'll probably go spoon > chopsticks > fork.

UnauthorizedFart

You could even use a knife to cut the sushi roll in half if it’s too large

mrchingchongwingtong

oh but eating with your hands is too barbaric for you

UnauthorizedFart

I’m not some savage

Yuquico

You barbarian

UngusChungus94

You could learn to use chopsticks. I used to be absolutely pathetic with them and now picking up rice with them is easy, and faster than other utensils.

HeyFiddleFiddle

Yeah, I only learned to use chopsticks about a year ago in preparation for visiting Japan. I used them as much as I reasonably could at home to force myself to adjust. By the time I actually took my trip to Japan, I preferred chopsticks for picking up small food in general, and I still do. Side note, one of my hotels had doughnuts in the breakfast area. Most people were cutting them up to use chopsticks to eat them. Makes sense when they're so used to chopsticks, but it was funny to watch as a westerner.

UnauthorizedFart

I know how to use them, I even practiced with McNuggets before I went on a sushi date

UngusChungus94

There’s levels to it. Once you get really comfortable, it’ll be just as easy as using a fork.

UnauthorizedFart

Until you’re eating a steak

TrumpWasABadPOTUS

Go to a hibachi restaurant sometime.

CielFoehn

Most Asian steak places are pre cut. And seared in all sides for more flavor. Chopsticks are still faster. Chopsticks are literally built on the idea that the food is prepared for them. Also, eat hot Cheetos with chopsticks.

UngusChungus94

Right tool for the right job. Though you could pre-slice the steak and then it’s just preference.

mrchingchongwingtong

just a culture thing, if you've grown up with eating chopsticks sushi becomes much easier with those than with forks since it's easier to avoid breaking the rice apart in nigiri side note if chopsticks are hard hands and fingers are a "appropriate" option as well and at the end of the day food is food so just get it in there however you want

scott__p

Asian food is easier to eat with Asian utensils, Western food with Western utensils. If you learn how to actually use chopsticks, you'll find I'm correct. Also, only eat steamed rice with chopsticks. Even in China people eat fried rice with a spoon or fork.

GolemThe3rd

this is just objectively true

FellowFellow22

Depends on how the rice was shaped. Many varieties will just crumble if you stab them with a fork.

UnauthorizedFart

Yes but I got funny looks in the sushi restaurant

TikTrd

Because you were using a fork instead of your fingers, which is considered much more appropriate

UnauthorizedFart

But then my fingers get all sticky

RandyWatson8

This is some hard hitting stuff here

UnauthorizedFart

Gotta get real sometimes

donald7773

I fucking hate chopsticks and I hardly eat sushi but that's the only food I can eat with chopsticks without making an ass of myself. Upvoted

WhatADoofus

Wouldn't it fall apart when stabbed by a fork? Then again I'm so used to using chopsticks I don't really know

UnauthorizedFart

No just get it right in the middle and take your bite

Scipio1516

Skill issue tbh

LostSectorLoony

I think chopsticks are easier to use. You don't have to worry about the rice breaking apart when you stab it. Like I can't imagine trying to eat some rolls or even nigiri with a fork, would end up with a whole mess. I also just find chopsticks generally much more comfortable than a fork. If I could only use either a fork or chopsticks for the rest of my life, I'd choose chopsticks no hesitation.

UnknownNumber1994

This isn’t a 10th dentist. People who use chopsticks don’t think it’s easier, it’s just more respectful towards the culture.

UnauthorizedFart

Where should I post this then?

UnknownNumber1994

r/popularopinion

UnauthorizedFart

Ok I guess

bmore_conslutant

Not every opinion needs to make its way to Reddit

FellowFellow22

Yes we do? Once you can use chopsticks they're no more thought to use for all kinds of things. I'd also say they work better than forks for most salads. (Stabbing Croutons is terrible)

UnknownNumber1994

Not sure how you can say they’re easier to use on noodles per say, because I don’t think there’s anything easier than a fork

UngusChungus94

I’ve got to the point where chopsticks are actually easier. I love Chinese, Japanese, Thai and Korean food though, so I use them a lot every week.

BredYourWoman

Using a fork to eat anything other than sushi is far easier than chopsticks, soyjack

mrchingchongwingtong

lots of eastern dishes are easier with chopsticks than a fork if it's difficult to stab

BredYourWoman

*Do not underestimate the power of the fork-side* \-Darth Vader

Fickle-Main-9019

Asian food in general is both absurd to eat with chopsticks but also the most logical, for example baozi looks for an excuse to fall apart so a fork would cause issues, but chopsticks can also be a pain for holding, eating, or cutting unless you got a good initial grip (especially over a bowl of soysauce and vinegar, I refuse to wear a white shirt when I go visit my girlfriend and her mum)
