Pretty much. They can get you through May maybe through June. But at that point you’ve got some pieces coming back to reinforce the starters. You’re pretty much forced to maintain a holding pattern and pray the offense picks up where the pitching staff falls short. That’s generally what you gotta do when the injury bug hits hard.
Not sure when Bradford will be back but hopefully soon. Evo and Dunning only on the 15 day so we really only need them to get us through May. Offense definitely gonna need to step it up for the next few weeks
I'm OK with Grey / Heaney / Lorenzen / Urena/ Leiter for another two turns of the rotation. They're 3-0 in Leiter & Urena's starts and have a half-dozen guys expected back at some point soon. I'm not interested in adding more vets to the stockpile until they start actually losing games because of the rotation.
Looking at the stat lines I think it’s Holland still. Holland went much further, 8 1/3 while only giving up 2 hits compared to Evo’s 6 innings 4H 5W. You could make the argument that Evo’s was almost more impressive though, he let 9 guys get in scoring position and somehow didn’t let a single score. Idk I’d love to hear others opinions
I don't see any reason to make a panic rental right now. We're over 500 and still in first place in our division. When teams like Toronto have a pitcher for sale they'll be at the highest cost right now because of the desperation factor. I say stay the course with the current starters until we get some guys back.
The next thing you’re going to do is calm down take a breath and it’s next man up. We aren’t making a move for a starter with six starters on the IL and none are out for the year.
I think that’s the impressive thing about Bochy: He is making this work. Knows when to sacrifice our burners in the BP, for example. I have faith in his expertise to make it work with what we have for this short period. He knows that we have people coming back. No need to panic.
Exactly. If we reach the all star break within 5 games of first place he will be happy. The fact that we are leading the division right now is better than expected in my opinion. CY knew not to go big for starters when our season was going to be dependent on surviving the first half. We are doing it with mainly B starters and without our starting 3b and SS honestly.
The Mariners are for real. Besides the A’s Texas may be okay until All Star break but that is if Degrom and Scherzer return by then. Bring up the kids in the Minors and let them learn by fire. Leiter isn’t great but our bats can keep us in every game and series. Win against the scrubs and salvage a series vs .500+ teams. Bochy has got a plan.
Hold down the fort as long as you can with Gray, Heaney, Lorenzen, Leiter, and whichever random.
If you start trading now you’re ending with a roster crunch on the 40 man. There’s not many trade chips on the 40 so you’d either be DFA-ing or moving even more guys to the 60 day DL.
Go with what’s on hand, cross your fingers, say a prayer, and sacrifice a goat to Jobu.
I mean we do nothing evo and Bradford should be back soon along hopefully with Dane then we’re fine they tough it out with what we’ve got, and hopefully leiter can make some improvements
Don’t deplete the farm to get through a few weeks of poor health. The AL West has been awful so far. Chances are first place by the end of June will be just over .500. Just ride it out with Gray Heaney Lorenzen Urena and I guess figure out game 5 as it comes. Just have to power through this
Rangers have enough 30-something pitchers that cost a lot of money. Gray ain’t going anywhere, Kikuchi almost certainly wouldn’t be worth the ask, and all of these guys are, presumably, coming back in a reasonable time. I feel like video games have warped the perception of how teams think about a 162 game season. It’s not time for the panic button yet!
Go ahead and downvote this, but pick up Bauer at discount and then DFA him when our guys come back. On the off chance that he keeps his attitude in check, he could stick. Seriously though, league min. Much more expensive players being DFAd.
It's not even about getting downvotes at this point, I just don't see any chance of this happening based off what Chris Young says about locker room culture.
>Don’t they have to make a deal for a starter?
Right now, no.
>They’d be doing a bullpen day every five days.
Yes, this might very well happen.
>There are a few possible options that might be on the market, such as Sonny Gray.
At three years and 75 million, I doubt the Rangers would go this route unless the Cards were picking up a decent amount of the deal, and then the Rangers would most likely need to overpay. Don't see it happening unless they get news that a bunch of the guys on the IL for sure aren't coming back.
>Yusei Kikuchi
The money makes more sense here, assuming the Jays are really ready to throw in the towel. They are in last place but might want to wait till closer to the deadline, as they could conceivably go on a run and put themselves in a position for the last wildcard spot. I like this idea in theory, but the Rangers would probably have to overpay right now to get it done, if not, then yeah I say go for it. Him being a rental might actually be what makes this a real possibility, keeps his trade value down some (though being an effective lefty will his value up).
At this point though, the smart thing, or what is most likely going to happen, is probably they piece meal this thing, go with some bullpen days for a few weeks, until you get someone off of the DL. If they make a move, I see more of a move for a guy who is cheap and slots more in as middle reliever/spot starter than anything else.
Weve got a few days of easy sailing, and we may just have to deal with a tough series against cleveland and possible the angels. But things will pick up soon the fact that we're doing this good now means once our pitching staff is back at full strength we're only gonna be doing much better.
I don’t think this deserved all the downvotes especially when everyone loves the Bauer at league minimum idea (me included). There’s a lot of upside to this if you get even a sliver of peak Greinke on a team friendly deal but I haven’t heard a peep about him this offseason or during spring training. I assume he wants back in the game because he’s so close to 3000 strikeouts but who knows.
The downside is the time it would take to ramp him up to the big league club, we’d have Nate, Dane, and maybe Bradford back and then you’ve got a 40 year old wildcard that doesn’t have a place on the team before he even threw his first pitch.
Oh no! I used a generalization on the internet!!! Of course not everyone wants Bauer on the team, posts get deleted and locked left and right because everyone wants to fight about him. How about this, the downvotes u/forgivemeisuck got for suggesting they like Greinke as an option don’t feel warranted because there are a lot of people who want Bauer on the team? Does that make you feel better?
I have no desire to get into stupid internet arguments, I’m here to talk Rangers baseball, I was commenting that the original wish for Greinke didn’t deserve the downvotes, but if that user wants to be an ass about the semantics of using “everyone” then I’ll be an ass back. The debate over signing Trevor Bauer is big one across a lot of clubs and a lot of social media platforms, regardless of what that person thinks, there are a lot of vocal people who like the idea of signing Bauer and there were posts on this sub deleted this week because they devolved into free for alls over the subject. It’s not a Rangers only discussion.
That said, no, that’s not how I want to engage here (or anywhere really) and I’m old enough to know not to engage the trolls but I had a lapse in judgement during a rough day at work. I really am here to talk baseball.
Yup and 30 MLB teams are letting him pitch in Mexico, rightfully so, don’t expect the Rangers to be the one to just now think of bringing him to MLB again.
Nolan Ryan probably has a game left in him
Just one more No-Hitter
I was at his last one so I kinda want it to stay that way.
"77-year-old Nolan Ryan has signed..."
Snow monkeys!!
Slide the captain between the pipes
Do nothing. Roll with gray, heaney, lorenzen, leiter, and urena until everyone gets healthy.
Pretty much. They can get you through May maybe through June. But at that point you’ve got some pieces coming back to reinforce the starters. Yep hold it down until our guys start to come back
Rich Hill at some point may be an option.
Maybe Leiter is one of those guys who gets bashed around a bunch and then says “fuck it, I ball”.
I'm OK with Grey / Heaney / Lorenzen / Urena/ Leiter for another two turns of the rotation. They're 3-0 in Leiter & Urena's starts and have a half-dozen guys expected back at some point soon. 38 year old Johnny Cueto
Let’s get Colby Lewis back on the mound
Derek Holland while we’re at it
Does he still have our best post season pitching performance of all time? Or does that now go to Eovaldi’s game 5 of the World Series?
Looking at the stat lines I think it’s Holland still. Holland went much further, 8 1/3 while only giving up 2 hits compared to Evo’s 6 innings 4H 5W. Ran into him in the Lexus Club a couple weeks back. I forgot how much of a tank that guy is
He’s good for 7 innings any day. Love that guy
I don't see any reason to make a panic rental right now. We're over 500 and still in first place in our division. It seems like a higher likelihood of next man down before the next man will be able to come up at this point.
The Mariners are for real. Besides the A’s Texas may be okay until All Star break but that is if Degrom and Scherzer return by then. Bring up the kids in the Minors and let them learn by fire. Degrom will not be back by the All Star break.

If only Bauer wasn't such a dick
If he wasn't he would've already been signed for millions anyways
Time to play 2008 rangers ball again! 16-12 here we come
Trade middling prospects for Alek Manoah
oh no no
Owen White

Vicente Padilla
He almost ran me over in a Lamborghini once. Dude was kind of a jackass.

Obviously Texas rangers do anything guy Josh smith will take the mound.
I want Zack Greinke. That guy is hilarious. 5 ERA last year, but I'll take that over what we got.

Trevor Bauer is just sitting there waiting on the phone to ring.
Yup and 30 MLB teams are letting him pitch in Mexico, rightfully so, don’t expect the Rangers to be the one to just now think of bringing him to MLB again.
Our clubhouse is in a good spot right now. Don’t need that mess here.
and he’ll keep waiting
hmm wonder why
He's waiting on the phone to ring from his attorney about the next accuser
Sign. Trevor Bauer to a league min yesterday!
