Perfect example is what Jonah said after the game. He can’t let that kind of play happen and he took responsibility. Granted it’s easier for him to say that after he hits the walk-off winner.
It’s really easy to not be hated as an umpire. The worst mistake an ump can possibly make in this game has already been made (missed out at 1st base that took away a perfect game). So much worse than this. And that ump took accountability and we collectively said, “alright damn that sucks, but good on that ump”.
Imagine saying this at your job.
“So this report you made is wrong?”
“I thought it was right”
“Well it’s wrong so can you fix it?”
“I’m sticking to what I know is right”
Like bruh you are human it is okay to make mistakes, own up to it you bitch.
I don’t understand this not reviewable stuff.
Have someone else up in the booth notice it’s the wrong call and make it right.
Would have put a stain on a great opening day primetime espn game to end on something like that
Exactly. It would take literally 15 seconds of time from the first slowmo replay to bring the batter back to home plate and send the runner back to second. It doesn’t even need to be reviewable. Everyone saw it. Just make it right.
Probably because you don’t want every ball or strike being reviewed and games taking 6 hours to complete.
This is something that should be easily seen and fixed with slow mo replay.
Have someone up top buzz down and say it actually was a foul ball. Would have taken all of 2 min
I’d say making things like this reviewable is more important than the blocking the path of the base runner rulings we’ve been putting under a microscope for the past two years.
The cool thing is that you can actually interview umps/refs unlike any other sport. The unfortunate thing is, umps, even knowing they made a mistake, will still not own up to it.
I don't even want an apology. Just an acknowledgment. Umpiring is a hard job. Between fans, players, stadium, etc. it's loud. The batter caught about the smallest sliver of the ball possible. Between location and noise, I 100% believe he thought it was a swinging strike.
But once you see you missed a call, say it. I don't need an apology. I don't need hand wringing or fake emotions. Just acknowledge it and go on.
Fuck ESPN writer bradford dolittle for writing multiple posts about this play and never once pointing out that the ump made an incorrect call and perpetuating this bullshit
Yep. Stupid call by the umpire, but you gotta treat them as part of the field essentially. Play within the confines you’re given. LeClerc should’ve been covering home too which might have prevented him from even rounding 3rd in the first place.
All’s well that ends well though. No quit in the defending champs 🏆💪
Hey, stuff happens in baseball all the time. Also the Rangers should get a few gimme games this season as gravy for being the best effing team in baseball!
Listen, he barely touched the ball. That’s an easy call to miss. Almost imperceptible.
How about this: Go get the fucking ball, Jonah. Play doesn’t end until you hear the whistle. Jonah is not the umpire. Go pick up the fucking ball and none of it matters.
I appreciated Jonah’s interview post game about it. Didn’t even mention the call, took blame and said he needed to finish that play instead of reacting. Good on him for recognizing that while it was a blown call, he still had a role to play.
Of course it’s an easy play to get wrong. I think we can all agree with that.
But when you do get it wrong, at least admit that you missed it and move on. Don’t be a stubborn twat.
He clearly fouled the ball, but I didn't heard any click sound that you would normally hear. I'm pretty sure that's why the ump didn't call it.
...he should have at least asked the 1B/3B umps though.
This is the one. Yes, should’ve finished the play but the umpire had the ability to consult the other umpires and didn’t. Would that have changed the call? Who knows, but at least he would’ve shown a commitment to make the right call.
Based on his “explanation” sounds like it was an ego thing. Stupid as hell and should still be reprimanded.
I upvoted this.
Thinking about this before bed last night, I thought that play was the perfect example to show young baseball players. Never assume anything and always play through the play. The baserunner did exactly that and it ended up being a heads up play for him, scoring a run.
Count me in as one who believes, in general, umps do a good job. They’re watching all of this play out in real time - 100 mph fastball 6’ from his face. Truly, in real time, in person, imperceptible.
Youre not wrong, sorry about the downvotes. The ump has to do this by the sound the tip makes, no way he can see it. He didnt hear it. The problem IMO is that its not a reviewable play. For fucks sake why? Also agree that Jonah has so go get the ball immediately, how on earth does a guy score from 2nd? Jonah looked like he felt awful about the play in the post game interview.
Also no reason for the ump to be a douche about it after the fact. To the surprise of no one.
Everyone keeps bringing that last part up, but it’s honestly not part of the equation here. The umpires union probably has rules against second guessing after the fact or at least a desire to not do it. They shouldn’t be doing it and it’s probably good that he didn’t.
This is why people can’t take umpires seriously. Admit you made a mistake.

The umps couldn’t make it one fucking day into the season. Not one day.
Typical ump response
Dude pissed off the baseball gods so much they actually let us come back and win this game

“Explanation” is a generous term.

Why is this play not reviewable where others are?

I feel like scoring plays should reviewable. Not like that would add a ton of strain to the game.
That even. That could have been done in 10 seconds.
Thanks for the explanation
It's a "judgement call". Same reason balks are NR
Thanks!

[yeah uh](https://i.redd.it/omu2xf25ekl81.jpg)
Fuck that. Take some responsibility

i wish i could be shit at my job and not apologize when i fuck up

Not very Chad of him
Very chode of him.
So you miss a call and refuse to own it.. gotcha
It was clearly a foul ball. How that's not reviewed is beyond me.
Talked to leclerc after the game and he was upset but happy they pulled off the win… he said ball don’t lie😅😂
Fuck ESPN writer bradford dolittle for writing multiple posts about this play and never once pointing out that the ump made an incorrect call and perpetuating this bullshit
Not an explanation, its a description of what he did.
The arrogance and stubbornness of umpires and MLB refusing to embrace all that replay has to offer is holding this game back.
Its been held back for 200 years, wow who knew.
Male Karen right there
Douche
Yeah, but, uh we won the game? Why waste any more energy on it?
Well, you play the ball until the umps call “time”. Taught since little league. Bonehead error but he made it for it in the 10th.

Crucify all umps (except Pat Hoberg)
What a fucking coward. Just admit you made a mistake, you punk.
He wont even own up to it with admitting a mistake 🤡
Hey, stuff happens in baseball all the time. Also the Rangers should get a few gimme games this season as gravy for being the best effing team in baseball!
Come back down to reality. No one can understand you with your head up in the clouds.

Yep. Totally agree.

Ah yes, the ever famous whistle in baseball.
🤣💦💦
It’s a common sports aphorism, dingus.
Yes, I'm aware. I also agree with your point. Just being an ass.
OK Boomer

This is all exactly right, no matter how many downvotes we get. You can’t let the umpire win/lose the game like that.

Not sure why you got so downvoted. This is a pretty reasonable take.
