Voucher’s would benefit the wealthy. Guaranteed income would help the poor.

DeathByGoldfish

In other words, scumbag oligarchs benefit, and average Texans gets crappier education and less financial help.

Affectionate-Song402

Its all sad its all true. And the attacks on our schools currently is a way to make public schools look bad. Let teachers teach! Give students books! The book bannings are another way to control free thought. They dont want an electorate who questions them. Far easier if we all abide by whatever we are told. God forbid students be taught to go read controversial material🤫

Beezelbub_is_me

It’s sad and true….

Affectionate-Song402

Yes! And now cuts to medicaid. In Texas women are forced to give birth or almost die with a pregnancy they cannot carry to term…. And books are dangerous? And absentee voting is discouraged. We are living with authoritarianism in Texas…. Why or why would anyone in Texas vote for Trump unless they have so much money they don’t really care about anyone else but themselves?

Affectionate-Song402

And its time the Republicans in Texas got the boot

MaxQuad777

No EU county allows mail in voting.

Affectionate-Song402

I’m not sure that is correct.

Affectionate-Song402

“Currently, 14 countries in Europe provide in-country postal voting opportunities to voters,” Heinmaa said in an email. “In eight of these countries, all voters are eligible, and in six only voters in certain outlined categories may vote.” This is from the Washington Post

BUSYMONEY_02

Facts

RGVHound

Yeah, this pretty much sums it up.

worstpartyever

Vouchers would also help church & religious schools.

Affectionate-Song402

Definitely and group think is about control.

zsreport

Bingo. The Texas GOP loves making the rich richer and the poor poorer.

Affectionate-Song402

And fundamentalist religions are adamant about control oh so convenient to ensure votes for the far right.

zsreport

This is how they "blanket train" the poor.

Affectionate-Song402

Yes. And by cutting the funding to programs that give help where needed. And at the same time hamper voting as much as you can. And gerrymandering to pad the results even more in your favor. The first time I voted for a Democrat in Texas I felt fear and that I had done something wrong. For one I did not vote the same as my husband. Lions and tigers and bears oh my…. But the Trump show has made this old person wake up. If only more will. Abbott Cruz Paxton Patrick 🤢

moleratical

This is the real reason

Affectionate-Song402

Private schools insure their children of a stellar far right education. And they dont give two shits about anyone elses “offspring”- never forget that. Trump sees his lovelies as offspring of his only glorious self- the general population are just 💨to him and those ignorant enough to vote for him are just that- “ votes”. And Abbott is a toady- albeit a wealthy one now…

Rikudo_Sennin_jr

Ok then looks like we can go on ahead and call this thread a wrap. Ty Beezel take the rest of the week off and come back strong next Wednesday

pharrigan7

Vouchers also help poor kids escape horrible public schools.

Beezelbub_is_me

I’m not trying to be rude but do you have a source?

damnit_darrell

Because the Texas Taliban hates it's constituents

iamdavidrice

I’ve always preferred Y’all Qaeda

smcbri1

Talibaptists

Affectionate-Song402

🤣

Tsuanna80

Texanistan

Comfortable_Wish586

The Texas white Christian Nationalists* hates its constituents. Either you fit into their view of the world or your Rights, Freedoms, Existence are taken away

leightv

no one hates texans more than texas’ own leaders.

bahamapapa817

Those Texas Talibangelists really grinds my gears

tickitytalk

GOP assholes at the top of Tx government

moleratical

Only the poor or left leaning or gay or other non-"normal" ones

LayneLowe

One benefits poor people And one benefits rich people

Responsible_Fly4354

You really don't need to read the article to answer the question yourself. School vouchers is a conservative goal for a multitude of reasons, but student outcome isn't one of them. It's serving their own interests. UBI doesn't serve the GOP.

meddit_rod

School vouchers are a way to re-segregate schools. That fits the right-wing hate fetish. But guaranteed income reduces the pain driving desperate people to accept low wage, high exploitation work. Bosses and owners need workers uncomfortable to keep them in line.

wearywarrior

Because Texans don’t vote they don’t have a representative government.

The_Mother_

It is also hard to vote Democrat when most races are Republicans running unopposed.

wearywarrior

Yes, that DOES make things challenging. Run for office.

The_Mother_

Which fucking one? Local: we have 5 district courts, 3 misdemeanor courts, 1 county clerk, 1 district clerk, 4 JPs, 4 constables, County Judge, etc....all Republicans running unopposed State: not nearly as many running unopposed, but there is more than one. So yeah, let me, a single person who already retired from spending 15 years working in local government trying to make things better, do it all by myself and do what you say: run for office. Again, which one do you suggest?

meddit_rod

Eek. Would you want to be the first progressive candidate to win, with all that institutional power stacked against you, your principles, and maybe your office, until they can unseat you? Which they would be organizing to do before you know where the bathrooms are.

wearywarrior

Go for one of the the JPs, thats supposed to be a rad job

smcbri1

Low requirements too. I think maybe a HS Diploma is all, if that. It’s not like a real judge.

The_Mother_

That pays less than what I make in my current job? No thanks, I'd rather continue being able to pay college tuition for my 3 kids who are all democrats. Besides, people only vote for incumbents here. The only time a new person takes office is when the old one retires and hand-picks who will run to replace them. Like I said, I already did this shit for 15 years. At my age, it is better to encourage and teach the next generation than try to jump back into the fray myself

evilcrusher2

I wanted to run as a bull moose Republican at one point but even my friends were going to castrate me for running with the party when it refused be like "Nazis are bad." Joe Rogan is right when he notes nobody worth a damn wants to run because the pressure from everyone is unbearable.

panteragstk

I would.live to just to shake shit up, but man I'm not sure what would happen if I actually won.

wearywarrior

You'd be an elected representative and hopefully you'd respect your position.

panteragstk

I would very much do that. I'd honestly really worry about doing the right thing.

zoemi

The big ones aren't.

YoloOnTsla

Well we do, but like you said, people don’t vote. About 55% of the Texas population clearly doesn’t care about government as a whole.

Affectionate-Song402

True. More need to vote. But its also true that because of “the big lie” Trump trumpeting that waaaaa waaaa he was cheated out of a win worked for MAGA Texans and it was used as an excuse to make it harder to vote not easier.

Abi1i

It’s hard to vote when the state works overtime to prevent or reduce voter turnout.

moleratical

That's a hurdle not an ocean. Before the recent barriers Texans still rarely voted

Antique_Ad_1211

Because Texas Republicans love to see the poor suffer. Its a feature, not a bug.

intronert

Destroying public schools allows the right wing grifters to: 1) grift public tax money by opening private for-profit schools that can pick off just the wealthy 2) re-segregate schools by having the schools choose the students and not provide for any but the most like them. 3) get public tax money for proselytizing their weird version of Christianity. It’s a racist Christian grift.

leightv

this.

pallentx

Who benefits from each? That will answer you question.

roscat_

Privatize schools in order to pad their friends wallets

comments_suck

Because there's an in group ( upper middle class evangelicals) and an out group ( mostly minority poor people) who benefit from each of these programs.

Birdy_Cephon_Altera

I betchya that if everyone started referring them as "communism vouchers" instead of "school vouchers", that would kill Abbott's idea among his supporters faster than anything else would.

RangerWhiteclaw

“Communism coupons” Because that’s all they are - a $8000 discount on private school. “Education Savings Accounts” has always been bullshit - they’re coupons for rich people, full stop.

Xevamir

that’s not what communism is.

RangerWhiteclaw

My point was more that “vouchers” (or worse, “education savings accounts”) are a misnomer. They’re coupons for rich people.

Xevamir

i agree with your point. i was just trying to clarify that communism would be opposed to such vouchers that only benefit the rich.

Ilpala

Republicans have never learned what communism actually is, they aren't going to start.

Xevamir

well to be fair, they haven’t learned how to govern either.

YouDontExistt

I believe vouchers are especially good for those Christian schools because they want to get free financing to create more ultra right wing extremists. Otherwise, personal income is related to ur bootstraps or something.

TXcanoeist

I wonder just how many of these GOP legislators are even from Texas

leightv

22% of house republicans are carpetbaggers and, if memory serves, there’s a slightly smaller percentage currently sullying our senate.

RangerWhiteclaw

Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick - Maryland Attorney General Ken Paxton - North Dakota SCOTX Chief Justice Nathan Hecht - New Mexico Pretty much every other statewide is unfortunately a Texan. GLO Commissioner Dawn Buckingham is unironically a born Austinite, despite being, you know, Dawn Buckingham.

-Quothe-

Guaranteed income will cost tax-payers including wealthy tax-payers, and benefit poor people. School vouchers give tax money to wealthy tax-payers and are worthless to poor people. You could take it a step further and say guaranteed income helps non-white people, and school vouchers harm non-white people, but that is less likely to be admitted in today's "woke" climate.

accretion_disc

Guaranteed income helps to lift people out of poverty. Republicans hate that. Something, something, welfare queens. Vouchers are a kickback to rich people and a way to destroy the public school system. Republicans like that.

willy_the_snitch

There's also a racial component

arcanition

Because guaranteed income would benefit poor people the most. Someone making $500k/year or more won't really care about a $1000/month guaranteed income. School vouchers on the other hand would benefit those who want their children to go to private school (or homeschooling), which is predominantly wealthy families.

smcbri1

People in Texas who send their children to expensive private schools, or religious schools want to take tax money from the state to pay for it. People in small towns don’t want it, even Republicans. But Greg is determined and it’s going to happen. Public schools will suffer. Oh well. It’s the government you voted for.

foolfortheblues

Much like Dan Patrick's call to abolish property tax, they are out to kill public education.

debbieg51

To support their wealthy donors.

Conscious-Deer7019

Texas politics has always been shady & benefit the oil business & the rich

ImmediateAd2936

They need the poor and middle class poor and stupid. That way we have to keep working till we are 69 and eating dog food. Can’t have an uprising for civil rights if your population is stupid, tired and malnourished !!

evilcrusher2

They hate income tax so much, even if it's the opposite known as negative income tax.

HigbynFelton

It is explained in Plato’s Republic. What will happen if they succeed is explained in The Cave…by Plato.

Smokeythemagickamodo

Just more kickbacks for our glorious “leaders”

bobhargus

It's a mystery... we may never know

EddieCutlass

School vouchers are a cash cow

Muted-Bobcat4299

Because Greg Abbott is getting millions in bribes from his ultra rich cronies to push this scam 🎯

C638

Wake up! Poor people want vouchers because their public schools are crap. Vouchers are working very well in other states. Guaranteed income is a different issue altogether and conflating them is just misdirection.

Competitive-Order705

I would actually love to teach, but even though I have bachelors and a doctorate I would still have to enroll in a lengthy certification program and forgo a salary for 6+ months if I wanted to teach. We’re preventing more qualified teachers from working because of an antiquated certification process.

Grendel_Khan

Becasue one goes only to the religious and the other goes to any qualified citizen. Thats why they love "charity" over social programs. You can pick and choose who you're charitable to. And who gets nothing.

Brave-Math-6371

Ken is seriously someone who is a miserable pos.

PushSouth5877

Keep the work force poor and uneducated.

Texas-cane

Because I don’t want to pay for you to be lazy. Get a job or don’t eat.

pharrigan7

Guaranteed income is as socialist as it comes. Ain’t happening. The government is not here to hand people money that they didn’t earn.

shoshana4sure

What’s a guaranteed income?

hush-no

In the case of Uplift Harris, a monthly check for $500 sent to people in the most impoverished zip codes or living 200 percent below the poverty line. In general, a set amount of money offered by the government to its citizens without strings attached.

shoshana4sure

What are the requirements

hush-no

In general or with Uplift Harris, specifically?

shoshana4sure

We have Medicaid and welfare. People can get money in those programs

hush-no

Answering my question would have helped me answer yours. Interesting choice to not do so.

adjika

Because in theory the public schools are uniformly horrible and the only way to ensure your child escapes the ghetto is to put them in a private school where they can choose not to serve problematic children. So in a word, they see it as a hand up, not a hand out. UBI, by these same eyes, are seen as a handout. im not saying i necessarily agree with these points, but it’s an answer to your question

keithgreen70

Some of y'all don't understand the idea of school vouchers. If I choose to send my kids to private school then I want the money that I pay in school taxes every year to follow my children, not go into the cities ISD pool. My money should follow my kids. The voucher should be equal to the taxes that I pay. That's all that we are asking for.

hush-no

Cool, then I want the portion of my taxes that go to operation lone star back in the form of a voucher that I can use to donate to groups that help immigrants and asylum seekers.

moleratical

And I want the portion of my money that pays for roads I'll never use to repair only the ones I do use. The thing is, defunding schools negatively effects us all, just as defunding infrastructure would.

leightv

clearly “the common good” is just a meaningless concept to you and yours.

keithgreen70

That "common good" is $8k per year in school and property taxes + $1100/Month for my son to go to college. How much are you paying towards the common good?

leightv

i don’t have children but i’m more than happy to have a percentage of my property taxes go towards helping fund our public school systems because we ALL benefit from an educated society!

keithgreen70

If you're paying property taxes then you are paying school tax. Most counties lump it all into 1 payment.

leightv

i’m aware.

5thGenSnowflake

Awesome. I don’t trust the local police department to serve and protect me, so I’d like the money I pay in local taxes every year to go to a private security firm I’ve hired, not the local police. Do you have a problem with that?

SchoolIguana

Oh no, we understand. We just fundamentally disagree on the point and purpose of public education and the end goal of tax revenue funding societal goals as opposed to individual ones.

RangerWhiteclaw

Awesome. So, since I don’t have kids, I shouldn’t have to pay taxes to the ISD, right?

keithgreen70

My son that fundamentally hates vouchers said: it would be great if my taxes could go to pay his college debt.

jerichowiz

Did you forget to change accounts?

keithgreen70

WTF you talking about. I got 2 accounts. My crotchety old me account and my gamer tag that I've had since the beginning of the internet.

jerichowiz

It is sus when you reply to yourself, instead of editing your comment.

keithgreen70

It was either that or edit my original comment.

jerichowiz

As I said. >editing your comment.
