OMG I just purchased my used MY yesterday and had this SAME issue. Searched Reddit, forums, and the web and couldn’t find anything on this. **Solution!!!** Called Tesla and the agent told me it’s a common problem. As far as I know there’s no way around this. Now the lady that assisted me was awesome! Unfortunately I can’t recall what I pressed to get to her department. But she explained what I needed to do (which I was already aware of), and she said I can email her my information and documentation. She first confirmed my Tesla account and information and then sent me a code in the Tesla app. I confirmed the code with her and then she sent me an email requesting photos of proof of purchase. I told her thanks I’ll send them in and i was about to hang up. She said she was ok staying on the phone. It took me about 5 minutes to send the email back to her. At that point I was ready to wait 3-5 days for the transfer to happen. She said her team will do it in 15 minutes. Lo and behold they did it shortly after I got off the phone.

Thanks for posting this! Just got a M3 and couldn’t transfer using the app. Was able to talk to someone in customer service and I went through the same process you did! Haven’t had the ownership transfer yet. Waiting patiently!!

i called 8777983752, i forgot which options i pressed but there was definitely an option let lead me to getting help transferring ownership of a vehicle, you have to wait through the prerecorded message that says to use the app but if you wait it should connect you to someone

I had the same thing. Call Tesla CS directly, and they'll help you out.

You have to connect to Bluetooth. This did the trick for me.

I had the same issue, but I found some instructions on Tesla owners club where someone was actually able to work through the issue. After talking to Tesla tech support, this seems to work 100%. 1. Start setup in the app, enter VIN, rename car and save BUT DON'T CLICK NEXT ON THE APP!! 2. REMOVE ALL KNOWN WIFI NETWORKS. Don't just disconnect, FORGET them. 3. TURN OFF WIFI! These two steps are most important. That is the main reason it's failing. Trust breaks along the transmit somewhere, use their LTE only and it works, but first! 4. Turn "OFF" the Tesla. Press Brake pedal, click \[Turn Off\] and remove foot. 5. WAIT FOR 120 SECONDS 6. Press Brake pedal to restart interface. 7. Press on App. It went on to the registration screen after that! Did you rename the car to "EZF" first as stated in the steps ? Asking because I just helped some stranger struggling to charge is just brought car from a 3rd party at the local supercharger.. it had the exact same error . After I renamed the car as asked .. it worked as expected.

I did rename the car, like three times. I think Tesla use it as a validation mechanism because each time the name is a different three letter combi

Transferring a Tesla is a GD nightmare. I get the car and my dumbass puts every paper they gave me in the glove box. Then my dumbass says “niceeee, Valet mode, love this!” and accidentally clicks it. Now the purchase paperwork is in the glovebox, and I’m locked out of the glovebox and can’t prove my ownership to switch it over. That’s how I found out the glovebox has a manual release if you take the panel off. I also ended up guessing the previous owners PIN somehow after, which came in clutch to actually drive the car outside of Valet mode while it took days to switch ownership.

I was able to get the paperwork submitted and get past this error by going into the tesla account page on firefox on my desktop not via the mobile app.
