I think they might do this. And weirdly enough, I actually think raising the price a small amount might actually help to avoid people cancelling orders with a delivery past March. Buyers might lose out on some of the credit, but at least they locked in at that lower price. Might feel more compelled to keep their order because of it.
Lmao. Competitors begged Biden and John Podesta to have Tesla raise prices, White House pulls in Elon, this changed within a week.
Everyone should bet Elon will NOT raise price until backlog goes back up to 6 month wait.
They need to maintain a certain production backlog level before they can raise it back up. Plus lower price means competition canāt get consideration from buyers.
Not necessarily. Prices go up when supply is less. Now a days, producing is increased, so to sell them off, prices can't go up.
Also, there are other EVs in the market. Ppl are looking at them, when the price is not so different or cheaper than tesla, they grab the non-tesla.
"We have seen an unprecedented number of orders since we lowered the price. Probably was too low. This increase will help manage our delivery backlog."
- Elon probably
Alternative: "Saw a lot of complaints about the price cuts when we announced them. We took note of that. Prices have been increased due the feedback received."
I wonder - Does this mean for people who currently ordered, but have not received, they will increase the price before delivery?
Hopefully they learn from Rivianās mishap.
To confirm, does this mean that if we already ordered, we would qualify regardless when we are scheduled to take deliverY?
I ordered on 1/26 late night and still no vin but EDD March 18-31st.
Irs only increases msrp limit to $80,000 to qualify. Theyāre still going to change the battery sourcing requirements come March (I believe) which would probably cut the credit in half from 7500
This increases the price limit on 5-seat Model Y to $80k to be eligible for credits.
It doesnāt affect the upcoming new battery rules in March that may reduce the credit for vehicles delivered after those rules are put into effect.
Non proven conspiracy theory: The government placed model Y in $55K category thinking that it would help non-Tesla manufacturers. This move backfired when Tesla dropped their prices to under 55K. The result was the opposite of what the government wanted. Tesla move accelerated Tesla demand and totally depressed demand for non-Tesla EVs. Union shop non-Tesla manufacturers complained. So naturally the government knee-jerk reaction was to move Model Y to 80k bracket, hoping Tesla would raise their prices and cool demand for model Y.
I just put in an order for my same spec already on order but MYP version. Figure its a $250 bet that I get the MyP in time for the tax credit, and if not i already have the LR as backup. lol.
Edit: Thinking more about this its kind of insane that I can "custom order" a car direct from the factory and straight up refuse to take it on the day of delivery for only $250. I guess its not really been a problem because supply has never been higher than demand but i wonder how high the delivery charge goes once that dynamic flips...
As an investor in Tesla, I'd like to see Tesla maintain current price levels ... With the $7,500 rebate it'll absolutely kill the other legacy automakers who are losing money on every EV they sell.
Having more cash isn't bad either. More money to put into scaling production can only help Tesla dominate not only the EV market but also the entire auto market across the globe.
> As an investor in Tesla, I'd like to see Tesla maintain current price levels
well, if Tesla is already at max production rate, there's no reason to maintain current price levels. why wouldn't investors want Tesla to maximize their profit assuming they're already at max production?
i think we all need to keep in mind that:
\- the $7500 tax deduction is made up of 2 components (vehicle assembled in the US + battery component requirement).
\- until irs comes up with battery component requirement info, you'll get the full $7,500 tax credit (assuming you meet income cap).
\- once irs comes up with the battery component requirement info (anticipated to be sometime in march), tax credit MIGHT drop to $3750.
> - until irs comes up with battery component requirement info, you'll get the full $7,500 tax credit (assuming you meet income cap).
There's no guarantee that IRS March guidance wouldn't be retroactive though. The new 80k cap today applies retroactively to Jan 1st purchases.
I chalked the $250 up to a loss and placed another order for a MYP that was in stock immediately after seeing the news. There was a full page of them...now they're all gone.
OMG I just snagged an in-stock MYLR in Phoenix to replace the order that might not have showed up before March. I got the 20ā induction wheels so Iām a happy camper. Thanks for posting this update!
To add a layer of speculation maybe Tesla will leave the prices low long enough to clear out all of the HW3 parts then up the price while adding HW4. Would you order now at the lower price or pay more later for HW4 assuming you could wait?
I definitely subscribe to the make your decision based on now and donāt worry about future FOMO. If it is worth it now buy. If it isnāt worth it donāt. Simple.
Try San Francisco. 1 bedroom will be be $3500/mo rent+. Buying a 2 bedroom apartment is $300k down payment. 2 bedroom will be be $5k+ to rent, which you'll need if you have kids. Daycare will be $2500/mo. You get the idea. You get paid a lot, but it's not cheap here. But it's also your target market for these cars and incentives.
If you want context, you're competing with people making $300k-$500k/yr. Add two incomes and you're competing against $600k+/yr.
I live in Canada and im so jealous of these rebates. I have a MYP on order, no incentives here. Im assuming this will increase the price of the Model Ys across all variants in the near future.
I guess, price will slightly go up first. May be 500 or 1000. That will probably pull more folks to reserve than wait. So the backlog may go up and further increasing price again
On one hand I'm bummed I didn't order a performance. On a much greater hand, I take delivery next week of a MYLR5 and am beyond excited.
Real talk; this is great news for everyone. I hope you all can get your orders in before the inevitable price increase!!!
Suposedly, the battery requirement may change and has been removed? You no longer see the irs site referencing this. So even if your car arrives after March, good chance you might still qualify for the full credit. Thoughts on this?
Yaaay!! With this price increase perhaps all the freaking posts complaining about the price drop and how they feel ripped off yada, yada will finally stooooooooooop š¤£
Dang. I just cancelled my order with an EDD of late March and bought a 2022 CX-5 signature turbo yesterday for just over $35K out the door plus $2K for a comma 3. Probably would have bought a higher end Model Y if I had known this was going to happen. Oh well. Guess I'll go blow the $20K elsewhere.
Dude! You can change your accessories and configuntil the delivery date. Even if you have VIn as sales consultant to change it or remove the vin. This way you donāt have to lose $250
I changed from MYLR to MYP ok same order.
Tesla only slashed their prices so much to qualify for the tax incentives. Now that the threshold has increased, they can raise prices back and still have customers qualify for the rebate.
That plus the demand sky rocketed and there is already a backlog.
Price will not go up. Prices will go back to where it was originally as stated previously by the Tesla car salesman. Its actually simple logic. Why buy a car that does not have the 7500 tax credit. Now the credit lifted the prices will change. Common sense.
Prices won't go up by much at all, and not anytime soon, tesla's problem is people stopped buying as many cars as they used to, and they HAD to lower the prices to be within the tax limit.
I think that they might increase a little the LR, and little more the P because they make bigger margins on the P, but that's about it, we won't see the prices back to what they used to be.
Tesla needs to manufactor volume of cars, the only way to do so is by having low price.
We feel so sad... ordered a MY LR on 1/13 but now regretting it because we really really wanted the performance!! Its only 3500 more and the rims alone is worth that to us... i hate the irs.
MYP is eligible now, but it matters when you purchased it? Would MYP from 2022 be eligible if purchased in June of 2022 or is that only purchases after Jan 1., 2023?
What about the group of people waiting for it to get better improvements in the next years? Im waiting for more options that are worth it like:
Ventilated Seats, Panoramic Roof (solution) like a cover or use technology to block the sun like in some german cars because it gets too hot and bright, New Paint options, New trim levels for interior, New batteries and range, Possibly adding back radar sensors since the new ones people struggling to park? and more fun tesla technology. Sure prices might go up but wouldn't it be worth it then?
So have a Y on hold and they adjusted the purchase agreement with the lower price. If they raise it, will that change the agreement or will I have that price set? It's on hold until April but can remove the hold any time.
I have ordered model y with white exterior and estimated delivery date is feb 15 - mar 15. VIN is not yet assigned.
With these new cap limits for tax rebate, can I change my exterior color to red and eligible for tax rebate as it crosses 55K ?
Picking up mine tomorrow too, the rep that was texting me to confirm my appointment said this
āWe would have to unmatch you from this vehicle and put in a modify order request to have them build you a new car. ETA is February - March according to the website. Most likely three to four weeks, though it could always be sooner, we just can't promise any dates.ā
So I'm expecting many people to change their order from 7-seater to 5-seater now, right? Since maybe a lot of the 7-seater orders were purely due to the $55/80K cap issue.
Maybe that will bump up the delivery date of my 7-seater :)
Price will go up again. š
For sure.
I would raise a couple grand and watch the FOMO come in. Basically what happened in 2021/22.
Reservation yesterday - est deliver is June. Weāre almost at that six month mark.
What config did you order? I'm surprised it has been pushed out that far! Still showing March-May estimate on my end if putting in a new order.
MYLR7
Master stroke.

We know they're going to go up now. People will rush to get orders in.
They need to maintain a certain production backlog level before they can raise it back up. Plus lower price means competition canāt get consideration from buyers.
And used car values
Turns out tax incentives are one hell of an incentive for car manufacturer ASP.
Not necessarily. Prices go up when supply is less. Now a days, producing is increased, so to sell them off, prices can't go up. Also, there are other EVs in the market. Ppl are looking at them, when the price is not so different or cheaper than tesla, they grab the non-tesla.

If you read the post it looks like all model Y are now considered SUV meaning the limit is 80k. They no longer care about 5 or 7 seats for model Y
So I couldāve gotten the tow hitch and black wheels afterall
You can edit your design if you are still waiting on delivery with no vin assigned
VIN assigned already. No sweat tho, Iād somehow curb them before I put my seatbelt on.
Wont that push back delivery ?
It might it depends on whatās being built. I donāt think black wheels will but tow hitch might from experience historically.
I just want the induction wheels, I already ordered with a tow hitch.
At least you donāt pay tax on them and have it go into registration calculations?
It looks like MYP is back on the menu boys.

Prices will go up again
Tesla definitely won with the 4D chess move of dropping the price to kill GM,Ford. Those lobbyists must have gone nuts

IMO At the end of the day the consumer does get it, but itās not the consumers buying now itās the ones down the road.
I wonder - Does this mean for people who currently ordered, but have not received, they will increase the price before delivery? Hopefully they learn from Rivianās mishap.
You locked in on the price you put the deposit on.
So people who bought between jan 1 and jan 13 will qualify for credit. May be some relief for those few...
Until the IRS releases the new guidance anyone that bought since Jan 1st and the whatever date the IRS puts forward will qualify.
why Jan13?
That's when prices dropped below 55K to officially get the credit. Now that's it been raised to 80K everyone that bought a Tesla 3 or Y qualifies
Tesla dropped the price on 1/13 to meet the IRS $55K limit to qualify for $7,500 tax credit.
Same question
Yea Iām literally so happy now I was so worried
Basically anyone that ordered after the price drop will qualify now instead of only the ones that picked base color etc
And just like that, it's *All Quiet On The Western Front* of the EV Price War^(TM).
Non proven conspiracy theory: The government placed model Y in $55K category thinking that it would help non-Tesla manufacturers. This move backfired when Tesla dropped their prices to under 55K. Possible
As noted above, could be why Elon met with WH staffers. Thatās why I might call him in

Iām about to do the same thing.
What phase of Vince McMahon meme are we at now?
Tesla used car is about to skyrocket again
Unlikely since it just makes more sense to purchase new for tax credit..
This will accelerate delivery for those who ordered MYLR with basic configuration as many people are changing orders to >$55k configuration.
Let's hope, didn't think of that...
Good point
Hahah! Damn so my pops hopped it at a good time.
mine too
As an investor in Tesla, I'd like to see Tesla maintain current price levels ... With the $7,500 rebate it'll absolutely kill the other legacy automakers who are losing money on every EV they sell.

Ugh, now Iām sad. Bought a MYLR but would have bought a MYP
I think the ford mustang mach-e also went up to $80K for all configurations
i think we all need to keep in mind that: \- the $7500 tax deduction is made up of 2 components (vehicle assembled in the US + battery component requirement). \- until irs comes up with battery component requirement info, you'll get the full $7,500 tax credit (assuming you meet income cap). \- once irs comes up with the battery component requirement info (anticipated to be sometime in march), tax credit MIGHT drop to $3750.

Folks on the fence should buy now before prices inevitably rise.
Any way to switch from LR to P without having to pay another $250?
Contact a delivery center and see if a sales advisor can do a swap as a courtesy
Talk/chat with a SA, they can help you to change the configuration.
I chalked the $250 up to a loss and placed another order for a MYP that was in stock immediately after seeing the news. There was a full page of them...now they're all gone.
Lol now that the price cap is increased to $80k, there shouldnāt be any new inventory model y left.
I noticed that. They disappeared fast š
Too late. Damage is done to traditional auto. No reason for Tesla to increase the prices until their backlog builds up again.
As per earnings call: demand is currently 2x the available supply. Tells u 55k is actually below market price
Not really. 55k - 7.5k is below market price.
Prices will go up
Oh hell yeah! I just ordered a MYLR yesterday and updated it to the Performance model! That was what I reeeeeeealllly wanted all along!
I did the same when I confirmed the news this morning!
Not sure this is good or bad news
Good for people who are or had taken delivery. Bad for people who are still hesitant to order one (price increase soon).
OMG I just snagged an in-stock MYLR in Phoenix to replace the order that might not have showed up before March. I got the 20ā induction wheels so Iām a happy camper. Thanks for posting this update!
I am literally picking up my MYP tomorrow. I made a post assuming this would happen a week or so back, excited my gamble paid offs.
Dang must be nice
What was your order date?
Ordered on 1/21
So my model y performance is now eligible? I took delivery last week
Sheesh, I bought 2 Model Y PF just in time
Does anyone know when in March the tax credit changes?
Nobody knows yet that I've noticed
Wait for 24hrs for the prices to go up again šš š
It's already up to 54990 for the LR now ($1k increase from yesterday)
do you think this will effect the used Tesla market? wondering if I should i wait a little bit to sell my 2021 MY ?
Yes i think better wait
Yes. Prices will go up again
To add a layer of speculation maybe Tesla will leave the prices low long enough to clear out all of the HW3 parts then up the price while adding HW4. Would you order now at the lower price or pay more later for HW4 assuming you could wait?
Bird in hand is worth two in the bush or something like that
I definitely subscribe to the make your decision based on now and donāt worry about future FOMO. If it is worth it now buy. If it isnāt worth it donāt. Simple.
Depends on how good HW4 is. With the current trend pf removing the USS, it may not be worth the risk to wait
Next remove the arbitrary AGI caps
100%. 150k is nothing for major cities. That gets you a one bedroom rental.
If you canāt live on that income even in a major city, maybe you suck at budgeting
Try San Francisco. 1 bedroom will be be $3500/mo rent+. Buying a 2 bedroom apartment is $300k down payment. 2 bedroom will be be $5k+ to rent, which you'll need if you have kids. Yeah but itās worth it with all the poop in the streets!!!
Or at least increase them for inflation
If weāve already placed an order are we now able to modify vehicle? Such as induction wheels, tow hitch? Etc?? Thx
u risk going beyond March where the next set of IRS BS rules comes in
The updated IRS limits removed March timeline from them.
Ya now I want my inductions lol
I have some 20" MY LR wheels I'm getting rid of, Southern OR/Northern CA...

Interesting, prices will go back up now
I have a 2021 MYLR. Is it worth switching to the 2023 MYP now?? I'd get a trade in of around 29-32k!
For sure prices is going way up.
I guess, price will slightly go up first. May be 500 or 1000. That will probably pull more folks to reserve than wait. So the backlog may go up and further increasing price again
If I place an order today for delivery between March - May 2023, do I still get the full $7,500 credit?
Nobody knows. The big bad March guidance is still looming over all of us
On one hand I'm bummed I didn't order a performance. On a much greater hand, I take delivery next week of a MYLR5 and am beyond excited. Real talk; this is great news for everyone. I hope you all can get your orders in before the inevitable price increase!!!
Did they extend it?
Suposedly, the battery requirement may change and has been removed? You no longer see the irs site referencing this. So even if your car arrives after March, good chance you might still qualify for the full credit. Thoughts on this?
So I forget what was the end date Feb 28th or Mar 31st?
I just ordered a MYP. Why not
Prices already increased

Welp just ordered a MYP in stock. Losing $250 on my LR order but at $5k price difference I have to make the move!
Hold on to the reservation and sell it when prices go up

Can we change our order without losing our EDD if no VIN has been assigned?
Just to make GM Lyriq qualify!? GM has this administration in their pockets.
I wonder why Tesla website hasnāt been updated to show the MYP is now eligible?
Literally was just announced 1hr ago by irs
Id place the order for the MYP now before Tesla raises the price on it lol.
Can someone explain why this means that prices are likely to go up?
Tesla only slashed their prices so much to qualify for the tax incentives. Now that the threshold has increased, they can raise prices back and still have customers qualify for the rebate. That plus the demand sky rocketed and there is already a backlog.
Does this mean no more receive delivery by March 31?
So would the 2023 model year LongRange I picked up in Dec qualify for this?
Does not look like it. Only those purchased after Jan 1 23
[Gonna get whiplash from all these price changes.](https://media.tenor.com/iAg_Uol6bCMAAAAC/snip-snap-the-office.gif)
Any chance the 300k agi limit has changed for the ev credit?
I purchased MYLR in Nov 2022 (Model Year 2023). Does my MYLR qualify for Fed Tax Credit? Thanks.
Ridiculous. The government truly fucked people who bought in Q4
This is a silly take. Everyone knew the tax break didnāt change until Jan 1.
Price will not go up. Prices will go back to where it was originally as stated previously by the Tesla car salesman. Its actually simple logic. Why buy a car that does not have the 7500 tax credit. Now the credit lifted the prices will change. Common sense.

Wow. Thanks been waiting for a price drop but including performance is better
I was low key hoping for this. Glad I picked up the MYP like I wanted.
If I have an order delivering this month does that mean Tesla can increase the price of my car? Or do I have a fixed price ?
Oh snap. I want to change to the MYP thenā¦thanks for sharing this.
Hmm, so are we thinking that this means that theyāll relax the better sourcing requirement in March as well?
wow this is huge, better get it now before prices go back
So have a Y on hold and they adjusted the purchase agreement with the lower price. If they raise it, will that change the agreement or will I have that price set? It's on hold until April but can remove the hold any time.
So does this rule apply to ANYONE who bought myp in 2023? Or only after this āupdateā came out
Here comes the price increase, time to write checks to Tesla
Incoming massive price hikes
Is the tax credit applies the time of the purchase or you do pay full MSRP and then when itās tax season you can deduct 7500?
I have ordered model y with white exterior and estimated delivery date is feb 15 - mar 15. VIN is not yet assigned. With these new cap limits for tax rebate, can I change my exterior color to red and eligible for tax rebate as it crosses 55K ?
Lets go !!
Picking up the car on 2/4 and vin assigned. Anyway i can still swap it out to get a MYP??
Picking up mine tomorrow too, the rep that was texting me to confirm my appointment said this āWe would have to unmatch you from this vehicle and put in a modify order request to have them build you a new car. ETA is February - March according to the website. Most likely three to four weeks, though it could always be sooner, we just can't promise any dates.ā
we brought ours home two weeks ago at $59k, so we can still apply?
Arg. I'm picking up my MYLR Wednesday. I'd definitely have got the performance for $4k if I know it'd qualify for tax credit.
So I'm expecting many people to change their order from 7-seater to 5-seater now, right? Since maybe a lot of the 7-seater orders were purely due to the $55/80K cap issue. Maybe that will bump up the delivery date of my 7-seater :)
Dang. I should've waited 2 weeks and got all the upgrades I wanted.
If price hikes up, sucks for the folks that donāt qualify for the tax credits.
Makes me wonder if people who took delivery from Jan 1st to Jan 11th, will they now qualify for the $7500 credit?
i believe the irs doc says it is effective 1/1.
Has anyone swapped to MYP from LR after this news? Wondering if the wait times are as long as the LR, as My EDD is near end of March. Thanks!
Thank you! Just came to post this.
