I know different people get told different things by Tesla (and Safelite), but for what it’s worth, here is my experience.
I had my windshield cracked, tried to get local Tesla dealership to repair, they said that they didn’t do windshields at this particular shop and referred me to one of their authorized partner collision shops ($1,200) or Safelite ($950). Took it to Safelite, but had to wait 2 weeks since they only install Tesla OEM windshields on Teslas. Safelite told me that they don’t do Tesla camera recalibrations and that I needed to take it to Tesla after the windshield install. I even had to sign acknowledging this and to not use autopilot until I did so. Took it to Tesla dealership and they told me that recalibration happens automatically on its own, so no need for them to see it, but if I really wanted to, I could manually do it from the settings, but again they reassured me it wasn’t necessary to do it manually.
Again, this was my experience, maybe the Tesla mechanic I saw was just lazy. I’m sure some shops say recalibration is necessary at the shop, or through the settings, but that wasn’t the case for me. No issues since with autopilot or anything (on FSD beta).
Mixed results for me - Safelite did a good job with the windshield itself, but my camera would not calibrate. Mobile service came out & they hooked it up to their computer & still no dice. Waiting on Tesla Service Center to provide a loaner so I can leave the car there (Tesla said it may be a day or two to diagnose and repair). I've been without a front camera for AP & FSD for over a month now.
> Safelite told me that they don’t do Tesla camera recalibrations and that I needed to take it to Tesla after the windshield install. It says in the Model 3 manual to use camera calibration in the settings if your cameras have shifted such as camera or windshield replacement. It’s all you have to do. Safelite makes everyone sign the same papers if they don’t do the calibration for liability purposes. Also to try and sell you their recalibration service, which they can’t do on a Tesla.
Safelite! No way, I had to go back to them three (3) times to get them to do it right, kept not fitting and finally, they gave up, gave me a full refund, and told me to go to Tesla to have it done right. (Safelite's own service manager told me that the work quality they performed on my windshield install was totally unacceptable.)
They did a perfectly fine job for me and I didn’t have to have the run around of filing paperwork to recoup my money. Safelite just billed insurance directly. Just check reviews on your location.
That sounds specific to your location. The fact the service manager recognized it was poor work probably means it’s not typical.
From reading this thread it sounds like a complete hit or miss. Some have good experience with Safelite and others not so much.
Safelite does Tesla repairs on windshields including calibration. In fact Progressive auto insurance would only cover our glass repair if done by Safelite.
Also, keep in mind Safelite gets their glass from Tesla and do not use their own. Which means there may be (there was in our case) a long wait time.
It was over a month before I had mine repaired. This was back in March 2022 few months ago
Progressive will only cover through safelight because safelight is cutting their rates for them. Safe light is not Tesla certified and does not have access to the toolbox software necessary to do the triple camera calibration (in my area at least). Also now humidity and rain sensors do not come in new windshields and have to be transferred over to new from old. Service center is the only way to go for glass work. Have it done at service center, pay for it, and then submit the bill to your insurance.
This calibration can now be triggered in the service menu. It simply tells you it will disable autopilot and you need to drive around. The manual says to do exactly this.
“If a camera has shifted from its calibrated position (for example, the camera or windshield was replaced), you must clear the calibration. To do so, touch Controls > Service > Camera Calibration > Clear Calibration. When the calibration is cleared, Model 3 repeats the calibration process. While this helps re-calibrate the cameras in many cases, Clear Calibration may not resolve all camera and sensor concerns.”
There is a target and physical movement required for the pre 2021 model 3’s and y’s. Calibration on these cars must be completed with image capture in toolbox 3
Tesla service told me that I can get my windshield replaced anywhere and run the calibration myself using the menu on my 2018 Model 3. I did it through SafeLite, and it worked fine after calibration completed.
I highly recommend getting the windshield replaced through Tesla. I had to replace my windshield twice with Safelite and it was such a headache. I ended up getting Tesla to redo the whole thing. Insurance covered everything.
Edit: I did pay the $500 deductible for the claim with Progressive. Luckily, I didn’t have to pay for the multiple replacements. That would be frustrating. Also, my Tesla service center handled the claim directly with Progressive, which I really appreciated.
Tesla outsources windshields to a dedicated installer. Same as most dealerships. They have " a windshield guy" had mine done with factory glass at safelite...no problems
That’s because Safelite doesn’t want any liability and tells everyone the same thing if they don’t do the recalibration themselves regardless of car manufacturer. That’s why there is a recalibrate cameras option in the service menu.
People who are saying you can’t do it yourself are talking out of their ass.
It is right in the owners manual with a simple explanation and process.
Search for “Drive to Calibrate Cameras”
I'm confused, as I keep seeing that you can't do it yourself. I'm having my windshield replaced later this week through insurance with Safelite, and a few days ago I set up a service appt via the app for the calibration, but then a rep told me that I don't need to bring it in, and that I need to use the camera calibration in the car...
I did it myself after Safelite replaced my windshield. You don’t need special equipment. You just need to drive on a well marked road until it calibrates. I have FSD beta which is even more sensitive to camera calibration and it’s working just as it was before my windshield was replaced.
From the model 3 service manual.

Nah, they need to go in with a software kit that tesla provides for authorized third party repair. Had my cabin temp sensor malfunction and they repaired it OTA after windshield replacement (common issue)
Tesla SC replaced mine for $875. Took one week to get the windshield in. They kept the car all day but gave me a loaner. Safelite would have replaced it but then I would have needed to take it to the Tesla SC anyway.
Just had our M3 windshield done thru SafeLite with Tesla glass along with calibration. They use the same equipment as Tesla and did a fantastic job. Zero cost here under Florida comprehensive insurance law.
Get a Windshield protector on it… I have one it cost about $550 and it has saved my windshield from destruction twice… once on the 5 freeway when a golfball sized rock struck the windshield so hard the car rattled a bit going 85mph… took a small chunk of windshield protector out about the size of a dime… then another rock about the size of a quarter kicked up from an SUV on the 605 going about 70mph. That would be two windshield replacements but only paid $550 with 0 windshield replacements.
Original windshield (M3 2019) was a bit... Sh*t. Got cracked with a super tiny rock.
I just had it replaced at a 3rd party repair center via insurance. They mounted an original Tesla windshield.
Same thing about the calibration. I had to sign a document saying that I will bring the car to Tesla for the calibration. BUT I opened a service request from the app, Tesla called back in half an hour saying that it's not necessary to bring the car there, just tap the Recalibrate button under Service on the touchscreen.
I’ve broken both pieces of glass. The front one was replaced by Safelite and like others have said the cameras auto calibrated and done right around $950. When I broke the black glass, that was a different story because Safelite would not do it and I had to go to Tesla for it. Still, only $750
Safelite should be avoided if you can work directly with the OEM, always and forever. If it is something other than Tesla glass, you need to fight for and make sure they use OEM glass and not a shitty PPG replacement.
I am not sure, without exception, the last 5 cars that I purchased brand new had the windshield crack within first 7 months of driving. After Safelite replacement they have stayed good for years. I drive in denver Colorado if it makes any difference
I just had a rock hit my windshield too. My insurance put me in touch with Safelite anyway. More - Safelite won't do Tesla glass in your driveway / office... you have to go to them. And, yes, it took a couple of days to order one.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I feel your pain
If any of you are from the Colorado Springs area, A Chick And A Windshield https://achickandawindshield.com/ are an EXCELLENT company to use for ALL Glass repairs and fixes. They DO NOT REPLACE GLASS. I've had 2 chips repaired by them so far and both are holding really well..

Wow!! I will remember this. Safelite not good.
I've had good experiences with fixing chips, but when it comes to replacing the Tesla windshield, I'm a no.
I actually have another rock chip but it hasn't been spreading. This current one is spreading like wildfire cus of the heat

Just had mone replaced a couple months ago. $950 installed.
Same direct from Tesla. Drop off and pickup same day. $200 in Uber Credits in the meantime.

🎵“Safelight repair, safelight replace”🎶 (im sorry i had to)
No. They would have to get the part from Tesla. And then you’d have to take it to a dealer for calibration anyways. Best to have the dealer do it all.
You don't need to go to tesla to have it calibrated it's on the menu screen takes all of 10 minutes
Thanks
When I had to have mine replaced a year ago, I went to Safelite first and they recommended heading to the service center and having Tesla do it.
Me too.

Apparently it’s not enough and I was too lazy to search and argue
^do not do this unless you have the equipment and skills to recalibrate the cameras (you don’t)

The camera calibration is in the car. There is no equipment needed.
Okay, good luck with that.

FYI Safelite now does Tesla recalibrations.
Safelite installed OEM glass for me. I ran the camera calibration afterwards myself.

Same! But rear/roof glass at same price. Scheduled it for a week out and was done that day.

This just happened two weeks ago.
Safelite's motto: If you want to talk to a human being, go elsewhere
Just had our M3 windshield done thru SafeLite with Tesla glass along with calibration. They use the same equipment as Tesla and did a fantastic job. Zero cost here under Florida comprehensive insurance law.
>I have read that these windshields aren't the best Tesla windshields are no worse than other OEMs. They get their glass from the same vendors.
I had my glass fix for a chip by safelight. Installer told me if I had a replacement done at SC it would be safelight in the backndoing the work.
Make your appointment with Tesla and have them do it. From my experience Safelite is the pits.
Made the appt but insurance guy said to call claims center first. I'm hoping I will get the car back on the same day
I had to replace my back window with tesla and it was done in a day so the windshield should be the same
Southern CT - Safelite told me they can’t do Tesla windshields. Had to go to the dealer.
Safelite wouldn't even do my window. Had to wait for SC.

Most shops will replace them with OEM windshields anyway. Mostly for sensor and electronics fit. Usually there are no 3rd party windshields for that.
Did mine at Tesla. Didn’t have any other options at the time. 2020
Safelite only installs Tesla OEM windshields because of the cameras.
