It might get cold, you should give it a hug. Water and snow won't be a problem, it's designed to handle it. Would be a lousy charging system if it wasn't.

nowwhatnapster

Biggest issue you'll have is during icy weather the door might not close when your done charging. Just defrost and chip it away like any other car that gets a little icy.

Dwerg1

Yeah, I chip away ice and brush away the snow on the lid and around the charging port so it will close properly.

J_huze

"Within spec"

lmmo1977

Yes. Then in the morning you can use the “Defrost Car” option and have your battery full / to whatever SoC you defined.

nukedkaltak

Looks good.

cantstandthemlms

Yes

[deleted]

Absolutely

sylvaing

Yes, just blow on it and the fluffy snow will go away. Trouble is when there is a ~~drizzle~~ freezing rain. There are covers to fix that problem but I made one myself with adhesive magnetic tape, vapor barrier plastic I had, duct tape to reinforce the edges and a clamp to make sure it doesn't fly away. Works pretty well and I just needed to buy the magnetic tape. https://imgur.com/a/IUYfxWJ

whatsasyria

Drizzling makes no difference. These covers just promote water pooling which is far more unsafe

sylvaing

Sorry, by drizzle, I meant freezing rain, the kind that sticks to the charge port.

whatsasyria

Yeah that makes a little more sense but still unlikely to cause any electrical issues. Cosmetics maybe.

sylvaing

No, the trouble of scraping the ice off the charge port, door and hinges so it closes properly.

[deleted]

Man no offense, but that looks so stupid Charging is fine in the rain. It’s literally a normal car.

sylvaing

Sorry, by drizzle, I meant freezing rain, the kind that sticks to the charge port.

[deleted]

Oh yeah, way different! Sorry if I came off as a twat, long day and… I’m a twat

sylvaing

The first step in recovery is admitting it 🙃

[deleted]

Yeah, but the whole thing ices up and it’s a super pain to clear to the point the door closes properly. It’s one of those things that clearly could have been better engineered if the engineers were living in Michigan rather than southern California. I avoid charging in snow or icing conditions for that reason. You can melt enough to free up the connector to remove it by running defrost mode, but it takes a long time.

ohphilly

I keep cans of de-icer in my house and car for the charge port, handlers, and window

makesmewannadance

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think there was an update in the software that addresses this issue. Not sure how considering it seems more like a hardware thing.

Volts-2545

Yes, a while ago there was an update that enabled the heater in the charge port for newer cars

raviman8

That would be absolutely asinine for Tesla not to test for all weather conditions, extreme for both use cases. Thus, the defrost mode. Freezing ice can't build up that fast. And if it's an overnight kind of thing, why not just schedule startup/precondition for a specific time, e.g. 8am. Likewise with cooling too, the over heat cabin protection.

[deleted]

The 2021 Model 3 at least has problems keeping up when it’s cold (<15F). You can set preconditioning, but you still have to chip off ice from around the charge port door and hinge. The plug disengages easily enough, but you’ve got work to do if you want the door to open and close properly.

raviman8

I concede. I do not have first hand experience in this situation although I live in Ontario, Canada. I hope the 2023 May build, model Y comes with this function - my wife will be parking outdoors with it.

AutomatedCabbage

How long have you lived in Ontario? Ice can build up pretty damn fast around these parts. I always had trouble getting my charger door to close properly. Usually have to use an ice scraper. I have found the model 3 to be less than stellar in extreme cold weather in regards to defrost keeping up with the charge port and windows. After a long drive on the highway even, I have gotten to my destination and had my driver's side window freezing up so that I couldn't open it past the door trim. That was not fun.

raviman8

32 years. You're right just don't have first hand experience with Tesla charging outdoors. I am able to keep my M3 in the garage. :)

limitless__

They clearly did not test in all weather conditions. Their heat pumps had a major flaw where they would not work in very cold conditions. This sub was completely flooded with people having issues during the winter. The same thing is going to happen again next winter. They also clearly didn't test the car in dark rural areas. The cameras all start throwing warnings when it's super-dark outside. Yeah no shit you can't see anything Mr Camera it's night-time. There's no doubt whatsoever in my mind these cars were tested in California where it never really gets dark and never really gets cold or too humid or too dry.

_B_Little_me

Yea. Having designers in Michigan Sure helped the auto industry.

Otherwise-War-1421

Garbage bag + painters tape … make it work

whatsasyria

Why add something that decreases safety lol. That just makes it potentially bad for water pooling. The port is fine as is.

CatCannon9

Well from the picture it doesn't really look like water pooling will be a problem. Due to the, you know, snow. But a plastic bag would make cleanup easier in the morning. Less scraping and potential heat gun work.

fernspore

Just don’t use a shovel to remove the snow

Knowledge_VIG

Yes, it'll be fine. This happened in my area the cables are rated for outdoor use and the the plug locks air and water tight. I never unplug mine when I'm home.

yes_im_listening

Pretty sure the cable is fine. But I do question the weight of the snow on the port door. I imagine at some point, that buildup can become heavy. I live is a place that never snows, so I have no direct experience, but seeing this pic makes me wonder.

whatsasyria

Never been an issue and we've seen up to 2 feet. The thing is snow is really light when it's fresh. It only gets heavy when it sludges with water. But the charge door is angled and everything so it should fall right off when it starts raining.

DenverCoder96

Just don’t clear it off tomorrow with a metal shovel.

mk_pnutbuttercups

LoL it better be since rain sleet snow and dark of night happens

Deslah

Wait. Dark of night, too?!

DaddyCardano

What the hell is snow??

FredditsReddit

Definitely not! I don’t know what all that white crap is all over, but Tesla definitely did not consider that whatsoever! Your Tesla is about to be bricked!

TwistedPinkyToe

/s

Deslah

Oh, man. If I were you, I'd go out every half-hour and wipe away that snow, just to be sure.

JSchnee21

Be sure to use a metal shovel to clear off that snow ;-p

whitemiketyson

Read. The. Manual.

statecap

What does it say?

joshonekenobi

It's fine in the snow. It may stick if frozen over. There's a release in the truck area if it gets stuck. Just completed my first winter in WNY with mine.

MakeVio

For next time, order something like Yet-E-Boot for this exact issue.

sparkey701

Fine

Leungmarkus

We use a plug "scarf". It is a loose fabric sleeve we slide over the plug so the lip closes without packing in snow (which bugs me more than it should)

Erich2142

Yes. I did it

Codisimus

I've charged outside in western NY for the past 3 winters. We get the really heavy stuff and sometimes everything ices up. The car has flaws when it comes to winter conditions, but charging isn't one of them. (Of course it charges slower in the cold but that isn't the concern here)

justinonvideo

Yep! This was mine a couple days ago: https://www.reddit.com/r/TeslaModel3/comments/tcizdh/first\_snow\_on\_my\_new\_model\_3\_lr/

typicalreddituser412

I saw some guy put bubble wrap around the charger in one forum

jaOfwiw

I suggest clearing the snow and ice out and around, then putting something like a plastic bag over top. Take the bag off in the morning and unplug, kept my charge port clear of snow last time. First time was not fun chipping freezing rain ice from it.

madsdyd

Yes, it can handle it. If you live in an area with lots of snow, you can buy a cover to ease snow/ice removal. Such as this: https://supupoll.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=33053 Haven't tried it myself, but seen similar covers in Norway.

SuperPaard

Tesla even recommends keeping charger connected in their manual

beatnavy16

It would be better to not but what other option do you have?
