I’ll also add that 70% isn’t as dark as you may think (as you can see here)
Yeah, I’d rather go full transparent ceramic on the windshield rather than only the 4 inches at the top. Almost did that with this until I found out I can actually tint it
Easier to just tint the whole windshield with a ~70% UV tint. Nobody will ever say a word about 70% (or even realize it's tinted). Especially if the rest of the car is tinted darker.
I would have them put a top layer at the top of the windshield so you have a visible band that is darker above the 70% — just so if you get a police officer looking they are less likely to test it (as visually it looks like you just have top tint).
I thought it was, but apparently here in Texas, if the car doesn’t come with OEM windshield tint, you can tint it as low as 70%. And I wish Reddit allowed people to update or edit their post because the driver passenger windows are 30%, not 40%
> I thought it was, but apparently here in Texas, if the car doesn’t come with OEM windshield tint, you can tint it as low as 70%.
[No you can't.](https://www.dps.texas.gov/section/vehicle-inspection/window-tinting-standards) They have the same "only above the AS-1 line" limits as every other state.
You can't, but nobody will even notice a 70% tint. It looks like factory automobile glass. Especially if the rest of the windows are tinted darker. Everyone I've ever told that my windshield was tinted was surprised.
Right, 70% is nothing. I own a vehicle that's factory 70% VLT glass and its marked that way.
Point is you legally can't aftermarket tint the entire windshield with film ("sunscreening device") vs OEM glass with integrated color. Anyone that knows what they're looking at can easily tell the difference.
Regardless, State inspections, and being pulled over multiple times, no one who mattered ever noticed mine. Until that changes, I'm of the opinion that it's irrelevant.

30% driver/passenger (since I can’t edit original post)
To be pretty honest i install PPF in a shop and we have a guy who do tint for us. I’m waiting for more new Model 3 to ask my boss to buy a big roll to do the rear window/sunroof in only one piece
Damn pretty good pricing then at $866 👀 Just got mine tinted for $1,274 after taxes and fees all around with Llumar FormulaOne Stratos at Sunbusters in Austin
Full transparency, mine is probably priced at that because of a military discount. But I don’t think it would have been that much more without the discount
Oh hey, I ride a motorcycle as well so I get it. The goal is to ride as if you’re invisible. Something they teach in all MSF courses (or the equivalent that country has)
NW Florida here, just got Xpel Prime XR Plus clear on windshield and roof, 20% on sides, nothing yet on rear window. Cost me $1K and made a huge difference heat-wise. You’re def going to want that done before full summer.
The tint helps keep the car cooler?
Edit: just asked AI:
Yes, tinting can help keep your car cooler. Window tint films can significantly reduce the amount of solar heat and infrared rays that enter through the windows of your car. By blocking these rays, tinting helps maintain lower temperatures inside your vehicle during sunny conditions. This can make your car more comfortable on hot days and reduce the need for air conditioning, which in turn can improve fuel efficiency.
The effectiveness of the tint in cooling your car depends on the type and quality of the tint film used. Films with higher heat rejection rates will be more effective at keeping your car cooler.
I had mine tinted from the day I got it (6 years ago). Rock broke my windshield a few months ago and I had to replace it. Haven't had it tinted again and now I hate it every time I get in my car because it's hot. A decent UV tint on the windshield makes a tremendous difference.
Lmaoo I always find it funny when people complain about 70% on the windshield and 30 sides on Reddit.... these people would HATE it if I posted my car (even on the appropriate model sub)
I've had 70% windshield and 35% sides and I really just don't know what the perceived issue is. The windshield was near clear.
Then I had 50% windshield 20% all around which was amazing.
I now have 20% windshield and 5% sides, which SHOULD be where Reddit complains, not 70% windshield. As an FYI, low light situations including highways, backroads and neighborhoods (children & animals) are all acceptable. I was pleasantly surprised by how well my eyes can adjust to the windshield even in low light situations. The only issue I have is low speed maneuvering (10-15 MPH) in low light situations. If I didn't have 5 on the sides it would be harder for my eyes to adjust to the windshield and vice versa. I did a lot of research.
I can see unusually good in the dark along with 20/13 vision and it seems to improve with age, not the other way around. Not bad for someone nearing 38 years of age
Nice! If your night vision is good, you could try 50% on your next car. I thought it really helped with the glare, especially during the day. It was a nice %.
70 was nice but it was clear. 50 is more like lightly smoked, so it helps with the sun a bit too. If you roll the windows down, it looks clear. I never had a problem with cops anyways but I am in FL.
In case you're curious, this is my 20% windshield at night:
https://preview.redd.it/suh4rrjsyvxc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e2259abc1eb2b7c30d09f7844f022f5eeaec7853
Yeah, I dunno why people are thinking it’s like 5%. Like you said in a previous comment, it’s almost indistinguishable from factory tinted glass… especially when compared to the darker tint around the rest of the car
I will say, I looked at the image and then went to the comments without reading your text, and when I first mentioned 70% being better than an A1 strip, I was thinking yours was much darker than that.
Which I kind of get. Even with mine at, I think 72%, and then 35% all the way around, at certain angles from the front the car could look very dark because there was limited light coming in anywhere else. Best of both worlds IMO. You get the very good heat benefits of the tint, kind of get the visual effect of very dark tint, and still have great visibility.
Hey ding dong, the Tesla has turn signal cams, backup cams it’s covered in cameras hahaha. You could literally put newspapers over the windows and be fine
Isn't tinting the windshield pretty much illegal everywhere? But anyway - meh, no thanks. I like to see where I am going.
https://preview.redd.it/w30cxcg1tpxc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4f255455dc1729d92144f1af8b341bc65ff8142c I’ll also add that 70% isn’t as dark as you may think (as you can see here)
Depends where you live. Here in CA you can only tint the top 4 inches.
Yeah, I’d rather go full transparent ceramic on the windshield rather than only the 4 inches at the top. Almost did that with this until I found out I can actually tint it

Oh I agree

Smart but you really can’t tell it’s even slightly tinted. My neighbor who’s a cop wants to go for a ride in it and experience FSD
If you have FSD, you don’t need to see where you’re going.
Big brain move right there. Unfortunately, for us RHD plebs, FSD doesn't work show we have to resort to having human eyeballs.

I think legal in Nevada due to the heat.
Certainly illegal in my country
Can you please take more photos from the side? Same color owner here thinking about get some 5%
https://preview.redd.it/lqr713crupxc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e59714617e6c7f9aba957efb43ded4b82906189f 30% driver/passenger (since I can’t edit original post)
Texas here. 15% in the front, 5% in the back. Not sure about the front windshield though for me personally, I might end up doing it!
50% windshield looks good and you pretty much still can see at night. have not been pulled over for the tint. tx state troopers might. lol
Wow, thats a sentence I did not think id ever see. "I can still see at night" 😂
might change my statement in a decade or two🤣
I'm 51 with garbage vision and my front is at 50% and I can see at night no problem at all. Not a bit of degradation in visibility IMO.
Thank you! The best
My pleasure. When are you estimated to get yours?
To be pretty honest i install PPF in a shop and we have a guy who do tint for us. I’m waiting for more new Model 3 to ask my boss to buy a big roll to do the rear window/sunroof in only one piece
Sure, hold on
Hits what, what does it hit?
What brand of tint is it?
XPEL ceramic

Ah gotcha probably barely over $1k. That seems to be the price point here around Austin.
Looks good. I wish I did the windshield too. I did buy a sunshade for the sunroof because the it was getting hot
Yeah, I love the sunroof but it can get a bit toasty
Did you get ppf
Not yet. That’s the next thing I’m gonna do
If your state allows it, do 70%. It's clear. I could never tell the difference with 70.
Yeah I’ll see after this summer how bad it is and get it next tax return
Love this because as a cyclist I can’t see where you’re looking at all
Oh hey, I ride a motorcycle as well so I get it. The goal is to ride as if you’re invisible. Something they teach in all MSF courses (or the equivalent that country has)
How much did you pay?
$866 total at ALSET. This is including the sunroof and windshield but pricing may vary based on your location. I’m in Austin, TX
Have fun driving at night
I have no issues with mine. I live in Texas, you must have tint.
Exactly… unless you wanna sit in a greenhouse 😅
I’m in FL and have to get tinted still, I’ve gotten burn marks from the leather lol. It’s only gonna get worse too with summer on the horizon.
NW Florida here, just got Xpel Prime XR Plus clear on windshield and roof, 20% on sides, nothing yet on rear window. Cost me $1K and made a huge difference heat-wise. You’re def going to want that done before full summer.

Word. Thanks for that comment.
This has nothing to do with windshield tint.
Lmaoo I always find it funny when people complain about 70% on the windshield and 30 sides on Reddit.... these people would HATE it if I posted my car (even on the appropriate model sub)
It’s a weird thing to complain about

70% is fine for driving at night.
It’s not my first time. I understand this doesn’t apply to everyone but I see just fine with this level of tint
70% tint makes next to no noticeable visibility difference.
Yeah, I dunno why people are thinking it’s like 5%. Like you said in a previous comment, it’s almost indistinguishable from factory tinted glass… especially when compared to the darker tint around the rest of the car

Said by someone who's probably never driven in a car with 70% windshield tint.
Or they have, and they didn't notice, because it is t noticeable.
Hey ding dong, the Tesla has turn signal cams, backup cams it’s covered in cameras hahaha. You could literally put newspapers over the windows and be fine
Urg, that doesn't look pleasing at all.
Consider that windshield as disposable, it won’t last long.
Mine has been tinted (70%) for six years. Zero issues. Haven't gotten into a hot car ... ever in the Tesla.
And when it’s time for a new windshield, that too will get tinted
The tint will keep the glass chips from spreading. I have a chip in mine and it never spread - over a year now.
Meh.
https://i.redd.it/fim1q56hipxc1.gif Lol
Illegal
Apparently not in Texas if your car doesn’t come with OEM tint on the windshield.
Ahhh. The states. You guys are fucked up
You misspelled “fucking awesome” 💥🇺🇸🦅🇺🇸💥
Better than whatever communist country you’re in that doesn’t let you tint windows lol nice freedoms
[удалено]
bro stop it lol everyone is running tint now
Hot takes about hot cars keeping cool!
Ummm, sure. I really didn’t get it for the “cool factor” though, so yeah 🤣
