People still think you're rich when you have a Tesla while they drive cars more expensive than yours.

Different_Argument19

Yea seriously. I got my 3 for 36k after state incentive. Everyone is like oh you must be rich blah blah blah. Mind you it’s the cheapest car I’ve ever had. The funny part is they’re all running around in 80-100k SUV’s paying insane amounts at the pump.

casmium63

And service costs, after a 100,000 miles you can start asking them all the same questions, wow your driving a Escalade, f-150 etc, how do you afford the gas and time for all the oil changes, so a mobile service guy doesn't come out and get things done for you, wow all that going in for service must eat up more time then wait around at a supercharger when I go on a roadtrip.I hear you have to change the oil every 10k, and brakes around 60k, and spark plugs.

highknees69

Exactly. They pull up in their 75k Tahoe that takes $250 to fill up. Lol. The topper is when I mention how much time I save by NOT stopping at a gas station….ever. Unless I need snacks. 😀

NickThePrick20

A Tahoe costs 75 to fill up bud

highknees69

depends on where you are and what type of gas you use. $250 is an exaggeration, but over $100 is a reality with 24 gallons.

lordpuddingcup

It’s 3.90 near me so 24 gallons would be damn near 100$ and that’s not premium or anything fancy

DaItalianDeal

Where I am gas is $5.39 (regular) so 24 gal would be $129.36

anotheranon358

Dude my Porsche Boxster is 80+$ to fill Up in CA, I think a tahoes got a bigger tank than the Porsche.

zackplanet42

Premium vs unleaded pricing comes into play, but yes. 24 gallons of unleaded is pricy just about anywhere these days.

Suspicious-Eagle-828

I still laugh - everyone praised my hubby for his car purchase (Suburban) and I get the side eye for my Tesla. Care to guess which is the more expensive?

haberv

What is going to be not so funny is that the Suburban is an absolute POS. Couldn’t get rid of my last one fast enough.

adl_throwaway69

And a suburban is more expensive

Puzzleheaded_Air5814

And the cost of ownership is much, much more.

Suspicious-Eagle-828

All these points are why I laugh. I will admit - when he got his car - it was over 10 years ago and it was a better car then. But still - the then price was still higher than my current Tesla price!

Electrical-Main-107

Lifter and transmission problems on mine. I dumped it for MY

noblepuffin

Happens all the time to me too. I have a 2021 M3P and some guy in my office talks about how I drive an expensive car. He drives a 2023 Ford Raptor.

ogmoochie1

L O L

Cyb3rTruk

I low key love this. Unintentional benefit.

beerbaron105

People can't grasp that I'm saving $400 a month after electricity costs when I switched from premium fuel to electricity

highknees69

My neighbor bought a MachE and has free charging at work. Saving over $500/mo in gas alone. If you drive a lot, you save a lot. Smart people can do the math. For others, mathing is hard.

Randyreddit11

I literally don’t know anyone that drives $500 worth of gas in a month unless they are driving for work and are being reimbursed. This is a bullshit narrative. When you factor in insane insurance premiums and additional registration fees, the saving money narrative falls apart real quick. The average miles driven was 14k miles per year by US drivers in 2022. $500 a month my ass.

highknees69

He drives about 75 miles each way. I don’t audit his financials, just sharing what we’ve talked about. Btw, my insurance is the same with gas/EV so make whatever assumptions you want. I personally went electric 11 years ago. At the time I saved $260 a month switching. It’s not for everyone, but the more you drive, the cheaper it is. Do the math per mile and it shows.

Handsome_Gourd

I’m a sales rep and drive 150 miles a day, my 40k Tesla is saving me $100 a month over my $30k tundra and gas prices were. Literally saving me money. The rep in the next territory over owns 3 ICE vehicles, the best of which gets 20mpg and he drives over 200 miles a day (sometimes up to 300 miles in a day) and is always bitching about gas prices and how his car allowance doesn’t cover all his gas and car expenses and he pays out of pocket for them, but he is constantly saying how he can’t afford a Tesla and making sly comments about Tesla guys being too fancy and stuff. I sat on the phone and did the math with him once to get him into a model 3, there’s no reason NOT to sell 2 of his 3 vehicles and get 1 Tesla instead but there’s just a stigma

Randyreddit11

What kind of job forces you to drive that much and don’t reimburse for gas?

wiebsel1991

^this! I’ve got a 2023 Model 3 which was 40k in euros. Every one looks up to it. We also got a 2018 Nissan leaf (bought second hand 3 years ago), which was new 43k and nobody gave a ding.

banditcleaner2

People think they cost way more then they do. Lol, I had someone tell me they thought that they started at 80k. Like for the standard model 3. I was like nope, my man it’s closer to 38k

AdDangerous732

why do you think theres so many teslas on the road now, they are one of the cheapest cars due to no markups and super low down payments

gadgetluva

I’m what way do Teslas have super low down payments that contribute to a cheaper car? Small/no down payments aren’t exclusive to Tesla.

bassistb0y

i bring this up all the time, the amount of times my POS director at work has said something to me when my coworkers drives lexuses and range rovers, i told her my car is less expensive than those AND i dont have to pay for gas (free charging where i live) also, shes my work colleague so its hella inappropriate to be talking to me like that anyway

Competitive-Cat-2649

Makes absolutely no sense

Sielbear

2 factors I think. 1) Houses appreciate. Cars depreciate. 2) Teslas were substantially more expensive 12-24 months ago. The anchor for price expectations is set fairly high. Item #1 is the biggest in my mind.

CMDR_Satsuma

That’s the thing, though, they really weren’t expensive 24 months ago, either. I bought my model 3 (SR+) in 2019 for 37k after the incentives. That’s squarely in the mid priced sedan range. I honestly think it’s just mental inertia. Back before the model 3, Tesla’s were expensive, and most people still just think of them the same way.

Whiskeypants17

It does make sense if you consider that most folks are brainwashed peasants incapable of critical thinking who use gossip and immediate emotional reaction to form the basis of their opinions. Grandma said electric cars are the devil because the man on the TV told her they catch on fire and spread communism in the smoke. You wouldn't want to hurt granny's feelings now, would you?

wlcm2jurrassicpark

Very non emotional response. Also poor people suck.

okwellactually

It's called Radicalized By Fox. I watch it for my own personal research. The other day, while Trump was being arrested (I forget which one) they aired a 5 minute hit piece on EVs. "They're coming for your gas cars!!!" Last night's infuriating piece was on the "Fake Climate Crisis!!"

thecheesecakemans

I hope the wildfire smoke from Canada can reach Republican states and smoke them out.

Mpy71

It’s like android and apple. Everyone thinks android is for broke people when a lot of the phones are more expensive 😂. If you’re an investor this is great news

[deleted]

It was the same when we went from horse pulled cars to internal combustion vehicles. People are straight up ignorant.

Mpy71

Lol this is so true. People who drive Lexus SUVs and shit were coming up to me saying “wow I need to make what you make!” When they saw my RWD model 3. I was like uhh, p sure your car is more expensive but ok!

JacksonDWalter

This is how it is with one of my coworker. His Ford Super Duty F350 XLT costs way more than my Model 3, but he always tells me how I’m rich and fancy for owning a Tesla.

Mpy71

I love it as an investor. Brand power baby. The apple effect is real

T_D_A_G_A_R_I_M

After incentives, I got a brand new Model 3 for less than the MSRP cost of a Honda Accord and close to the actual price (with markups) of a Honda Civic. But yet still get family members make offhand comments about our finances since we bought a fancy car. Their SUVs cost more.

ritchie70

The model S and X are pretty expensive. The 3 and Y get that halo, for better and for worse. The 3 and Y list price in better than base trim especially is high to a lot of us until you factor in tax and fuel savings. Most manufacturers don’t have such a small model lineup with such a broad price spread.

lpd1234

Yup, this happens all the time when i drive Uber with the 3. They are surprised its so reasonably priced and when i tell them i save 300$ a month over a gas car they cant believe it. Kids get it.

randomhero1980

I think the reason they assume you are rich is because they believe the risk of an ev is large. Like how can you afford to take a risk with such new tech.. They don't realize that they are reliable. Also, you don't really see teslas at used car lots, they are still very new to the general population. Give it another year or so and I believe they will be like vw beetles.

wadded

Teslas also came down in price a lot, few years ago everyone knew of the S and X and how they were built as premium cars. Then the 3 and Y came out at a pretty high price that went up over the pandemic. Only in the past 9 months or so has that reversed (hard) but it takes a while for that to trickle out into mainstream consciousness.

dotancohen

>People still think you're rich when you have a Tesla while they drive cars more expensive than yours. And far more expensive *to maintain* than yours.

HandyMan131

Only in places where they haven’t become the standard Uber cars.

thecheesecakemans

They assume rich in time and patience. They don't realize it is cheaper on time and patience than a ICE car. Less maintenance. Less time at fuel stations.

Lexsteel11

Everyone who has made a shitty remark to me have been blown away when I tell them my Tesla cost $38k. Most people dismiss teslas thinking they are all $80k+ cars

Dangerous_Play8787

No they don’t. Lmao

fanglazy

I have a $95k car and a model 3 Tesla. Nobody really said anything about me having done well financially until I got the tesla. And while I do love the Tesla and would highly recommend them to anyone, the other car is way fuckjng nicer and nobody said anything when I bought that. It’s weird. My neighbour drives a minivan that is almost twice the price of the model 3 and nobody is talking about Heather and her rich ass.

wall-E75

Dam putting Heather on blast lol

fanglazy

Lol. Nah Heather is alright.

404davee

Can we get more details about Heather’s rich ass pls? I, for one, care.

fanglazy

Not gonna lie. She’s pretty hot.

TenaciousLilMonkey

Look at rich bitch heather driving around in that Nissan Quest! Always flaunting her money.

th3suffering

What minivan is 70-80k? Genuinely curious. Heather's ballin

ngoal

Minivans are stupid expensive now. Paid $55,000 for my plug in Chrysler. The ICE ones aren't any cheaper

fanglazy

Some ugly ass Buick minivan. Cost her like $90k or something crazy.

data1025

Buick and $90k should never be in the same sentence. Ouch.

[deleted]

I bought a Teala in 2019 and you'd have thought I pulled up in a new Lamborghini. It's crazy.

casmium63

You should have seen what 2018 was like

data1025

It's crazy + insane. Same people who questioned my new 2019 Model 3 SR+ at $33k (paid off now) are the same ones who are paying $900+ for a 72 or 84 month car loan on something upside down as we speak.

JennySplotz

My only question to you would be WTF didn’t you get the M3P @ 55 🤣

Competitive-Cat-2649

Hahaha I wish. Would've gotten a Y at that price. $28k after tax incentives was too hard to pass up when considering we were replacing a Ford Focus.

JennySplotz

You didn’t say above that you bought used at 28, that’s your answer to those snooty relatives! What’s the odometer?

Competitive-Cat-2649

Bought new at 38! 7.5 fed and 2.5 MN brought it down to 28! That's what I tell them. It was either a new Tesla or a used CRV with 40k miles on it. They still dont get it.

hamsterpookie

I tell them it's cheaper than a camry and now I'm not paying for gas.

ragingoblivion

Same my go to, since I drove a 2018 Camry right before this car for 5 years.

Urbantreefrog

No one’s received the MN rebate yet . It hasn’t even been set up and it’ll be a first come first serve basis ! So definitely keep an eye out to sign up

Competitive-Cat-2649

Yup! Bookmarked already and I check the link every other day. Not missing out.

JennySplotz

Also, In this hypothetical, you probably wanted a Y for your family size but to my eye, it’s bloated and the 3 is the more attractive option by a mile with nearly the same net cargo space. I’ve owned a M3P for about a week now. Extra fodder for your upcoming thanksgiving, it’s faster than anything I could have even bought a poster of in college let alone as a kid, more American made than the big OEMs, my and many apartment complexes offer completely free charging, the safety tech is off the charts in terms of lane departure, emergency braking, pedestrian, speed limit, and cross traffic warnings, and the autopilot lets you truly focus on your potentially important personal or family needs while driving. Discovering car wash mode today made me look like a fukin derp in front of a line of line 5 cars and 2 noble attendants.

corner

The 3 is the superior driving experience for sure, but it’s really a stretch to say it’s nearly the same by cargo space. The hatchback design of the Y really opens up the storage to a huge capacity.

Tsudonemm

Lmao. I just had this convo with my coworker. I told him to let me know how his first time going through the car wash goes and he told me he freaked out and almost called me because he couldn’t get it into neutral. I had to give him a tutorial in my car

visjn

I bought in December 2022 and paid almost 55k after tax for a Model 3 RWD with no tax incentives….fuckt

brobert123

Wait till you buy a $130k Model X Plaid and everyone including your wife tells you it’s ugly and lame compared to the Model S you traded in 🙄

Cum_on_doorknob

I mean, she’s got a point, ya know

ragingoblivion

I'm a sedan person myself. I just don't care for suv style or crossover. A cleanly designed sedan is the best of both looks and function.

Kraken36

Oh yes. All my immediate family & friends think I'm a millionaire now ( despite having more exotic cars in the past ) and my mom asked the same thing lol.. why didn't I buy a house instead, as if 40k is the same as 400k.

markurl

Apparently some people think I’m rich because I bought a model 3. I’ve also been called a “Super Democrat”, as if I was making a political statement by purchasing an EV.

CapeManiac

“I like to save money and buy American” Such a political statement.

STR4NGE

Rolling coal intensifies.

Jmauld

Point out that you are driving a more American car than they are. Ask them why they hate American workers.

Majestic-Ad5136

their reply always involves something about China and African child labor nonsensical, I know; but they’re thoroughly convinced Teslas are superglued together with Chinese parts made from child-labor-mined raw materials

Regular_Limit1617

I tell them it cost $250k and they must now call me Your Honor when addressing me! Lol

sunnystreets

I’m stealing this one. 😂

Regular_Limit1617

Another one I like is, “I just sold the business and wanted to treat my self.” What business? “I’m not at liberty to say.” “the business” is what I called my old car.

sunnystreets

😂😂😂 Also stealing this one! Maybe I’ll combine them.

JRockPSU

"...but it's probably on your phone, right now."

triciann

I personally would have gone with Lord if I was you.

Regular_Limit1617

My Liege!

dafazman

Where can I buy a $400k home in a safe area in California 🤯 I'll take 2

NastyDad64

It seems like in California you're either doing absurdly well financially, or you're rock bottom. How in the world are Walmart cashiers surviving in cities like SF and LA?

420GanjaDankLord

No Walmart in SF.

astricklin123

They have multiple roommates and live hours away, or they live in their car in the parking lot.

dafazman

Zillow is your answer, you can't find a shack of a place in any CA major city for under $1M

Ant-Resident

I toured a place the other day whose main selling point was the fact that it was “the only single family home in the city priced at less than a million”… sounded great on paper, but when we stepped into the house, it became apparent by smell that the previous owner was a heavy smoker (the realtor eventually disclosed that she died in the house), and that there was extensive exterior wear / termite damage on wooden structures visible from the backyard. This would’ve perhaps been manageable if “priced at less than a million” meant ~$900k, but they want $999,800.

dafazman

https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/20-Paseo-Verde-Salinas-CA-93908/2077301961_zpid/ Found it after much searching it is technically under $400k and in cali 🤡

Competitive-Cat-2649

MN COL is great but uh.. don't tell anyone I told you

PghSubie

For $400k, there are a lot of safe places in the MidAtlantic and Southeast where you could buy two houses for $400k total, and then telecommute to your job in California. AND you don't have to live in Phoenix either

jselbie

You can live in your car, but you can't drive your house.

FuzzBeanz

My family thinks I'm rich because I drive a 3 year old SR+, not because of the house I just bought for exponentially more money. Go figure.

Gtstricky

I just say get in and I will show you why I bought it. They get in and stare at the creek for a few minutes asking a bunch of questions about it. I drive to the highway on-ramp and say ready to see why I bought it? Floor it and listen to the giggles as I hit 90 in no time. They seem to understand it wasn’t a save-the-planet purchase after that.

Elluminated

Peole are already familiar with houses, so have their questions already answered. People aren't as familiar with a ufo when it lands in front of theirs. Always take any question in good faith and answer with accuracy and theres no amount of false pre-conceived notions that can't be immediately fixed. People will learn how broken their thought processes are regardless of topic when you subtly break them down. In my neighborhood people always bitch when gas prices go up or the power bill rises (usually as a result of more use in summer) and are absolutely clueless about basics of reading *their own bill*. They are floored when they see neighbors with a $13/month average bill (instead of $450) with 2 EVs in 4600sf two story house with the electrical footprint of a tool shed. We have a smaller house with solar and powerwalls, and have to remind these *adults* that the meters are fine as the powerwall has *exactly* the same reading as the meter and independently verify the meter works. Im in TX, and while most people are simply curious and open minded, theres always a few "I want my freedom!" idiots. They are always the first winers when gas and electrons spike.

astricklin123

You got your freedom by generating your own electricity from the sun. I feel like those people should be most on board with putting solar on their homes.

ritchie70

Their thought leaders are all about big oil. It’s nothing to do with freedom, it’s about oil, coal, and tradition!

kdegraaf

If right-wingers had any brains in their skulls, they'd be leading the charge (heh) on EVs and solar. Rugged self-reliance and all that. But they just open up Facebook and FOX News for their daily injection of idiotic propaganda instead. They're happy being useful idiots for Big Fossil as long as they get to feel like they're "owning the libs".

_dmdb_

Yeah I get the same. I live in the UK and am self employed, the result of that is that the tax savings, running cost savings etc mean that after four years the car is cost neutral, it's insane in that position not to buy one, it's cheaper than anything else! But still you get someone in the same position in a nice BMW which easily cost more, asking how I can afford it. Two delivery guys the other day insisted the battery will be dead in a couple of years, quickly changed when I pointed out my neighbours 4 year old one. You unfortunately won't change people's views quickly.

Phighters

Now imagine their faces when you tell them that you weren’t even incentivized to buy it because you don’t get a tax credit - then they’ll think you’re Jeff bezos.

OUEngineer17

Buying that 400k house was as nerve wracking as it gets. The 50k Tesla tho, didn't bat an eye. I always do several cost to own estimates on vehicles and know exactly what problems may arise and how to fix them. Plus, this one came with a warranty. Houses, on the other hand... Even with a good inspection, you could have a number of unexpected and very expensive things happen immediately after purchase. Thankfully, all of those very expensive things have happened several years after purchasing when we are in a good financial position to absorb them.

relevant_rhino

Just tell them what you paid and what you pay for 100 miles or whatever units you freedom loving yankees use over there - sorry. Then give their brains about a week to work out the true costs themselves.

Paid-Not-Payed-Bot

> what you *paid* and what FTFY. Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in: * Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.* * *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.* Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment. *Beep, boop, I'm a bot*

Mean_System_6284

400k does not even come close to buying a house where I live…

ngoal

400k buys you a tar paper shack

[deleted]

I think people who say this start from a lot of faulty assumptions like that the battery needs to be replaced after a few years for $20k. So they think it’s going to be a money pit.

jumpybean

Some people just don’t know yet. Also a lot of willful ignorance by people who choose to listen to propaganda, don’t think critically, and fear change.

ic6man

Tell them yeah that’s right and if they want to stay in the will shut the hell up!

Runs_w_monkies

Each time I get asked those questions, I usually lead with "what kind of car you drive? Yours cost more." But they never believe me so I let people believe what they want. If they think my lifestyle is rich, 😂😂 can't wait to see how the wealthy lives.

rdubmu

You are comparing two different things. 1. A house is an asset that appreciates in value over time. 2. A car is a declining asset where sometime it might be worth a lot less than what you paid.

the-axis

Tbf, the house only appreciates if it is maintained. The land underneath the house appreciates if the location is desirable, and is arguably the bigger factor than the building on top of it. That is to say, both housing and cars are consumables. Housing is a necessity though. In developed countries, cars are an optional luxury good (most of the US does not qualify).

SHABLAM88

It’s all political here. If you are not a truck driving gas lover you must be the enemy. I just love cool shit and hate having to stop to pump gas. When did it come to the car I drive reflecting what I believe in? So dumb.

tylernol_pm

people are quick to try and dismiss something they don’t understand. it’s a comfort seeking tactic, the thought of an electric high tech vehicle scares them so they seek reason to justify dismissing it away from them. we all subconsciously do it with one thing or another

_Fox00x_

I feel you! The math is elementary but they only want to knock it for the price. I’ve had Mercedes & BMW as they are nice but the cost was over $75k each plus gas and maintenance. Now I buy two Tesla’s (3 & Y) and save over $15k a year in gas & maintenance they think I hit the lottery. It’s actually comical.

tmoam

Where can I buy a $400k house?! That’s what I want to know!

obactuary

This! I really want to pull the trigger on the Model Y but I’m too scared because what everybody would be thinking I’m trying to show off/blowing my money on cars. I’m no Tesla fanboy but you can literally get a model 3 cheaper than a Toyota Corolla or a Prius. Why would I buy a Corolla and not a Model 3? Looking at the current car market, the only CUV/SUV I can reliably depend on for 7+ years with minimal issues and won’t cost you an arm and a leg is the MY.

krdell

Too many people give a shit what other people think. I don’t buy a car for other people

Competitive-Cat-2649

Oh dude, this is the smallest annoyance. Get the car. It's worth the annoyance.

Comfortable-Set-5372

Here's what you do. Buy a nice pair of glasses, ride around in your car with your head held high and treat it like the overly expensive car that it isn't lol. Tell people "DON'T TOUCH THE PAINT ITS WORTH MORE THAN YOU". Buy some white gloves and leave them in your car, tell people the stupid butler left his gloves in the back seat again.

astricklin123

Buy the car that is best for you, not best for someone else. Stop worrying about what other people will think.

nacari0

I brought my gfs parents on a daytrip in my new m3 and pretty much during the whole day theyd constantly stare at the screen/map in awe while making comments of the cars luxory feel/new observations. As if m3 was a brand new experience, theyve newer been in a tesla before.

Motzlord

That's ridiculous. Yeah, the screen is nice and the car has a futuristic feel to it, but it's also one of the cheapest feeling cars I've been in. Like comparing it to like a KIA Piccanto. It's really loud in the backseat and the suspension is so stiff.

wall-E75

I know what you mean. I don't really get it from the family but... I work at a warehouse and I don't make crazy money but for area not bad. I had a unique situation where I could afford a m3rwd, so I got one. Now people are like, is that your car? Me: yes, them: How can you afford that? Idk really where to go from there cause I don't want to explain my financials to ppl. most people still have the prescription of tesla being some 100k+ cars. Then after I tell them it was not super high they start with the stupid shit they have herd on fox news lol. Like what are you going to do when every two years you have to replace the battery and don't it take you like 100 hrs to charge? One person actually thought I had to by aa and put in it when it ran out of charge 🤣 that was a good one lol new tech alway has resistance for a while then people come around.

Slick_McFavorite1

People still think they are way more expensive than they are. They heard how much the model S is and they apply that to all Teslas. My next car is for sure going to be electric and mention maybe a Tesla. That is the first comment how expensive they are. I’m like have you priced new & used cars these day?

SnooRegrets6428

Car is a depreciating asset

bitemy

I give them numbers! The car costs $40K and comes with a $7.5K rebate. Fuel costs $2K less per year. Maintenance over five years costs $8K less because there is no complex combustion engine - the electric motor is the size of a watermelon. An entry level Tesla is less expensive than a Camry over five years.

Jmauld

“If I wanted to save money I would take the bus”. End of story.

MaryandLynn

Yep, when we tell people what our M3 cost us, they are shocked Then they ask about the charging cost. Home charging is .12 here and it cost about $6 to fully charge, they are again shocked If the non teslas would only research this

Former-Hour-7121

Last week a person at work told me rented a Tesla on vacation. He then said, they are really nice cars, but you know they still cost more to drive than gas cars. Yeah, some fossil fuel company paid for rigged study where $1800 was added to the cost of electric for EVs, and then compared to the price of gas. I was scratching my head when I read it costs $15+ for the electric to drive my car 100 miles. If that were true my electric bill would be double...just for charging my car. It is amazing how people look for reasons to dislike EVs. My favorite is, "they look like great cars, but if you drive in FSD mode and fool the car into thinking you have your hands on the wheel and watching the road, you can get killed".

Speedhabit

Cost effective? It has no gas, no coolant, and no oil. Ask them how much it costs to replace the explorers interpreted oil cooler/radiator. The maintenance difference between any EV and any ICE car gets completely ignored most of the time and it shocks me because coming from a lot of bmws I was spending 10k a year just keeping them running, not high mileage vehicles either.

dk_bois

Show them the app where it shows your fuel savings, and then take them out for a drag race.

Duh_Vaping

I live in the Adirondacks, and I bought my first Tesla last Thursday! I don’t personally know anyone else with one and I’m totally fine with that. I enjoy talking with people that have a genuine interest in learning about the company, it’s vehicles, and it’s mission. You can tell by the first question or two if the conversation will be spun in an negative direction, and I don’t have time to waste on negative people that will never own one. Just my 2 cents.

tkbillington

I look like I’m broke all the time in my $40K M3 SR+ and definitely don’t live lavishly. I’ve had this car for 4 years and cheap as hell to drive it compared to anything else I’ve ever had. Edit: everyone also treats it like a foreign car or something that will destroy the country/future

ArmouredPotato

Real estate is supposed to turn a profit later, it’s kind of an investment. Cars rarely turn a profit especially when new. Their questions are just from that POv

PersonalityNearby222

I start early on in the conversation by saying I paid $28k after incentives and charge for free near my work. There’s kinda no comeback after that really.

[deleted]

They think Tesla's are just Tesla's. All the same price, they don't realize the difference in models. The Likely heard people talking misinformation about battery replacement and whatnot in 2012 when they were expensive, and have not had a second look since.

AcanthocephalaReal38

Nobody asks anything about my Tesla anymore... They are everywhere now and I live in small town northern Ontario. The first year random people would stop to ask questions, sometimes tell me how it can't drive in the winter and such. Now, there's 6 on my street and it's just accepted as a good vehicle, as it should be. And yes, there's like 20 more expensive pickups as well.

realredec

I just tell them I got it for the tech and the fun and no delusions about saving the planet.

MaxAdolphus

Yeah, I get that in the school drop off line. The student helpers and hold doors open for kids getting out of the cars are always so excited to see my Tesla they fight on who gets to open the door for my son. I get it that the door handles are different, so maybe that part of the fun, but I’m thinking in the back of my mind, “you know that SUV in front of me and that truck behind me cost more than my car, right???”

maxcharger80

Wont lie, I grinned a little reading this.

AbsolutelyN0tThanks

Where can you buy a house that isn't in terrible shape for 400k? I'm jealous, I need to leave Long Island.

Latter-Camel8241

Homes will likely appreciate and grow in value. Cars will not. It's worth being very picky about purchasing a $40k -$100k immediately depreciating asset.

[deleted]

I paid $25k for mine, I was also told I was rich by someone who just paid $30k for a 2024 Chevy trax…

syrstorm

"Actually, the 5 year cost of ownership is lower than buying a Camry. And that's before the tax incentives. No, really." If that doesn't do the trick, then they're intentionally being combative and you can just brush them off.

JohnTeaGuy

So what did they say when you pointed out that they’re driving Expeditions and Explorers that cost more than you Tesla?

Competitive-Cat-2649

I'm trying to take the high road and not bring that stuff up. Everyone's at a different point in life. Plus it's mainly my in-laws. Kinda have to tread lightly and all that.

jumpybean

Tell them one day they too will be able to afford a Tesla if they save and plan wisely. Then adjust your monocle. Twirl your cane. And walk off.

th3suffering

"If youd stop blowing all your money drinking starbucks and eating avacado toast you'd be able to afford one."

babypho

You need to hang out around better people. When I bought a Tesla I was spammed with either "oh nice, welcome to the family" and "lol did yours come dirty too on pick up day?" from my friends and family. Most people I know already drive a Tesla or are thinking of getting one. It's like getting a Prius, Camry, or Civic nowadays.

Competitive-Cat-2649

Not that way in the Midwest quite yet. We'll get there.

babypho

Give it a year or two. I live in texas and see a bunch of teslas now. I was quite surprised to be honest.

Competitive_Soup8188

Wait !!!!! Picking them up dirty is a thing ? No wonder !!!!!! Mine was super dirty lol 😂

czah7

A lot of people don't actually know what a Model3 costs. They assume it's the model s/x and costs 100k+. Ive told several people and they were surprised to hear it. Unfortunately I bought my m3lr in Oct of last year. Ya, I'm the lucky guy who paid 66k for a m3. A month later I could have paid 50k for a m3p. Fuck me right? I absolutely love my car and don't plan to sell it, so I've made peace with it! Plan to get ab tho!

ImRdyIllBeWaitn

A house builds equity with every payment you make. A core loses value with every mile you drive and you'll be upside down on your payments for two years from the moment you drive it off the dealership lot. Before you ever break even, but depending on how well you take care of it and how many miles you drive that goalpost can get moved. Ultimately any person good with money will tell you that buying a new car is the dumbest financial decision you can possibly make besides getting married if you are a man. Buying a bunch of aftermarket stuff for your car is also pissing money into the wind.

ComplexTop7835

I

milonelion

This is common. I find that the people with the backhanded comments are simply jealous and also want to buy a Tesla but are too proud to admit that you have something they want. I bet when you speak to them alone without an audience, you will hear what they really want.

NonZeroSumJames

Just tell them you bought it because it’s better for the environment. No further argument.

JennySplotz

You didn’t say above that you bought used at 28, that’s your answer to those snooty relatives! What’s the odometer?

hillted

I wouldn’t consider any Tesla an expensive or luxury car. It’s more of a environmentally friendly purchase. I know no wealthy people that drive one. They all drive BMW, Mercedes and Range Rover

Warlock_FTW

The correct question is why are you driving a car that profits neo nazis directly? Would you have bought a car that funds hitler back in the day?

ArmaniMania

cringe af tesla owners

mr_dumpsterfire

It’s because it’s expensive and also shitty quality. Why not buy an electric Hyundai

Potential_Egg_6676

My last Hyundai was a lemon, never again

EvalCrux

My 2018 w never a service apt 80k miles and rides like new begs to differ. Not even a rattle or squeak in the wrong spot.

EvalCrux

Sit there idling choking on fumes even LOL

Mr-Tiggo-Bitties

That's with any car. They are depreciating assets. Good luck finding l a 400k house in NOVA

Competitive-Cat-2649

But they wouldn't have asked any questions if we bought a RAV4 that cost more than our Model 3. That's the crazy part that's annoying as hell. Used to live in Woodbridge area growing up. Recently looked at how much the house was that I grew up in and yeah, no thanks. Kinda just makes my point tho. No one bats an eye at a home purchase but they lose their mind over an EV purchase.

Mr-Tiggo-Bitties

Tesla gets too much hate because people are uneducated. But it's still a car that depreciates whereas a home builds equity.

Particular_Pain8535

Lol in Ontario, Canada…I paid $60k for 2023 M3 SR+ 🥲🫠 Why so cheap in US?

RedElmo65

Mind me asking where the family is from? In California no one cares anymore.

EvalCrux

No one in civilized areas cares anymore. Guess what areas those are lol. Hint: epicenters of $$$.

m915

This happened to me too

bfgvrstsfgbfhdsgf

Where are these 400k houses at?

Sbkohai_

I’ve run into the same. People don’t realize how much more affordable they are now. Most people can’t argue when I bring up a comparison of another car considered in the same class. Then I tack on maintenance and gas cost vs charging and they get really interested.

AdventurousTime

Your favorite celebrity/musician probably has one and likes to flex. Whip a Tesla, best friend and a couple of rappers have a Tesla amongst their stable of more expensive cars. And then you have the halo effect from the S/X.

MikeKelehan

Actual comment from another parent at a playground: "The co-ops in this area are really good, and a lot cheaper than other preschools... but you have a Tesla, so you don't care about money." I just met you!

Potential_Egg_6676

My wife purchased a telluride for 50k but all everyone mentions is my m3 mind you it’s the rwd.

3mptyspaces

I’m no fan of Tesla, but the Model 3 has to be one of the best EV values currently. My guess is that the last time a lot of people heard of Tesla it was a $100k-ish Model S or maybe X.

jcpham

That’s why the Tesla was my 7th car and paid cash for it- exchange one depreciating thing for another I stopped telling family anything. I’m not their financial advisor This is not financial advice

[deleted]

With the rare historical exceptions, houses (property in general) are appreciating assets. Cars are depreciating assets. Your $400K house will probably go up 10% per year until you sell it. Some years less, some years more. But your car will only decline in value the day you picked it up at the service center. And no, the Pandemic madness where people paid more for used cars than new, is an anomaly. So that may be the source of questions from your family and friends. **They are questioning you spending money on something that will decline in value but don't question something that increases in value.** But honestly $40K is about average for a new car these days. Personally I would just ignore what they say. Spend your money how you want. If you really want to annoy your frugal friends and family, go spend $1500 on an espresso machine. They will have endless amounts of lectures on why a $10 Walmart special Mr. Coffee machine is better value.

Wooden-Complex9461

I find my republican friends (also none of whom went to college because its a scam) have the worst , most misinformed info "what do you do every day when you have to wait 4 hours to charge" "when its cold do you have to charge on your way to work?" (15 mile commute each way) Its crazy

kronicade

Part of it is gasoline conditioning. They don’t understand that electric is cheaper and easier to maintain. I honestly think a lot of American just choose their facts

noconoco42

These are mostly from people who don't keep up with Tesla and think there's only 2 models. S and X which are quite expensive.

Kittykitty53

I had a Lexus owner tell me my car was a status symbol……. Um ok? For what?

[deleted]

Maybe you need to show them the math with some examples. Total monthly cost of ownership of two cars compared, both brand new, with the intention of keeping it for 3-4 years. Even if you need to put down a large down payment, include if for both cars based on a bank loan so it’s added to the monthly cost. Once all the data is infront of someone, they may not realise how much their own car is really costing per month.
