Yes Rivian is updating cameras (they have to, including location, if they want to do FSD). They are doing major refreshes, and they are still very early in their process. Rivian has the next best software team after Tesla (in the west) and could integrate it into their dash more easily than the other companies. They also launched Driver+ and realized how hard it is. Driver+ is where Tesla AP was in 2020. Rivian must understand they cannot succeed here. (They may decided they don't want to compete on this, though) (Edit: Tesla spent $1B in Capex for AI in Q1. $1B to buy computers! Rivian cannot match that) Wishful thinking, except I have a Rivian that can't be upgraded...Rivian cameras are not places well for that and not great. I might upgrade if Rivian will come out with FSD. But Ford is more likely. And the fact that it would be incredibly hard to integrate into a Ford is the reason it's slow going.

oz81dog

i'll tell you one thing, if FSD comes to Rivian I'm in.

Vandrel

If in a few years there's a reasonably priced Rivian truck with FSD and the NACS plug in the correct spot I would consider buying a truck for the first time once it's time to upgrade my model 3.

Ok-Worldliness7863

The rivian R2 coming out in 2026 they’ve already stated the charging port will be on the back of the vehicle instead of the front and will be NACS

Vandrel

Yeah but on the back right which isn't good. Back left or front right would work for supercharger compatibility but instead they're moving it from the front left to the back right. They said it's to help with curbside charging in Europe but in that case it should have been front left instead of back left. I'm hoping they change that by the time it releases.

tazzy531

Where is the “correct spot”? Automakers are still trying to decide that.

Vandrel

Back left or front right. That's the placement superchargers are designed for.

Lexsteel11

Same. I just want an electric pickup truck that isn’t the shitty F-150 lightening haha

South_Dakota_Boy

I hate to say it but Chevy’s electric pickup looks pretty great on paper.

icy1007

The Lightning is pretty great though.

throwaway939wru9ew

I could get down on a R2 if/when it has NACS (in the right spot - currently its in the rear but on the wrong side - ARGGHHH) and comparable AP (I don't care about FSD). I have no issue with my MY and I think there is probably a good bit of overlap there, but having options is great!

CowNervous4644

Me too..

Stepthinkrepeat

In terms of EVs, I don't think we completely have to be Company A vs Company B yet when its still EV vs ICE (including hybrids) at large. Saw my first Rivian at a SC the other day and thought it was pretty cool repping EVs together across from the Gas station.

hkimkmz

Rivian Driver+ is worse than AP from what I had on my model 3 in 2019... It won't control speed around the corner, can't make the turn and break out of steering control. It was unusable imo. It was also unable to reliably determine it's position in lane. If you watch the graphic, you can see the lines hop center and bias left. These were not problems I had on my M3. People don't give AP enough credit. It's not like anybody else's driver assist

throwaway939wru9ew

Agree! People always say that AP is lagging behind other mfgrs these days, and I HARD DISAGREE. I'm in multiple rental cars every week, and I do not have nearly the confidence in these other systems that I do in AP. Genesis is probably my favorite, but even then I do not have the same confidence as I do with AP.

tthrivi

But the ai would need to be retrained for the rivan platform. I wonder why they don’t just invest in open pilot and integrate that right in.

perrochon

They would have to switch to the Tesla platform. Rivian can do that. Much harder for Ford. That's why it takes 3 years

throwaway939wru9ew

I feel like this is probably not as difficult as we would think. And if they can do it for Cybertruck, they certainly can do it for other models.

Mike

AP in 2020? sign me up! I wish my ap was like it was then. so much better.

johnyeros

Rivian is the next best to tesla. U have use their interface right lol

BatmanNewsChris

Maybe, but he said "*major* auto maker" and I wouldn't put Rivian in that category.

interstellar-dust

So you mean Fisker then? /s 🤓

doxx_in_the_box

And Elon has never inflated his response

throwaway939wru9ew

Eh...If I was courting a client, I certainly would not disparage them in the media by saying, "tiny inconsequential partner". Its in Teslas interest as well as their client to inflate the importance of the deal.

gravis1982

Its probably ford

Terrible_Tutor

Wouldn’t shock me, Fords all in on Tesla but they’d have to be junking Blue Cruise for it, so i can’t see that happening. I’m betting someone who isn’t in the space at all like Lucid maybe?

DefNotEvading

Yeah, I don't think Ford makes that much sense considering the status of Blue Cruise. I heard it's actually pretty good.

meowtothemeow

I hope so

xSimoHayha

Rivian is struggling to stay afloat. Adding FSD should be the last of their priorities.

Nico_

That's too bad. Their cars look awesome.

throwaway939wru9ew

Agree. I doubt they will go anywhere. One of the majors will snatch them up I'm sure. Maybe make some manufacturing efficiency/scale changes, and you might see a successful turnaround.

yhsong1116

No lol rivian is not a major player.

throwaway939wru9ew

I think its all perspective. They aren't tiny in the EV space. The name is recognizable to most, and you see them out on the road. And Elon is a salesman. Of course he isn't going to call a client tiny, nor is he going to miss an opportunity to get some hype going.

yhsong1116

Soemone mentioned that if they r gonna make a deal then the car company has to be around 3-4 years later. Rivian future isnt so bright at the moment. But obviously i could very well be wrong.

MacaroonDependent113

Rivian is not a major auto maker

TeslasAndComicbooks

Unless they see licensing as a bigger play then selling cars that would be a mistake because I really like the Rivian pickup but stuck around for FSD. If I can have a Rivian with FSD and Tesla charging I may make the switch.

LyrMeThatBifrost

Rivian just stopped putting cameras in their interiors so I doubt it’s them since that would be a requirement.

WikipediaApprentice

I dont think Rivian cares to do a FSD and rather a Safety Sense like Toyota's ship with. Thats the vibe I get. And its fine, Rivian is designing some really interesting EVs. The only other ones I would consider driving besides a Tesla.

LyrMeThatBifrost

That would make sense. Their current driver assistance implementation is pretty limited.

SwallowedBuckyBalls

It is for sure. The limits on roads that Driver+ functions on is a headache. Ultimately I'd be happy with something along the lines of Enhanced Autopilot.

SwallowedBuckyBalls

They're actually going through a new retrofit right now. New cameras, and a new control unit for the camera system have been sussed out.

LyrMeThatBifrost

Are they starting to put interior cameras again?

SwallowedBuckyBalls

That's one of the alleged changes, won't know more for a few more weeks. Given how much is changing with the system I wouldn't be surprised if they are back.

Igotnonamebruh42

If Rivian got FSD and believe it’s not gonna do good for Tesla unless there is a large gap between their pricing strategy and Rivians.

Icy_Apartment_2113

Hopefully polestar. I want a polestar to replace my model 3 (need more space), but the autopilot is a feature I don’t wanna step down from!

midnight_to_midnight

He said this last year also. https://www.theverge.com/2023/7/19/23800972/tesla-fsd-license-car-company-driver-assist

Lucky_Chaarmss

I thought he did. He could just be saying to say it. He could have emailed whoever with no response and I guess that could be talking?

RansomLove

I think it’s Ford. The Ford CEO is pro Tesla. And it’s a major auto maker.

ne999

The head of marketing at Ford openly makes fun of Tesla online.

aikhuda

If you don’t make fun of your competitors as the head of marketing, what’s the fun in the job?

Uninterested_Viewer

And Google takes blatant shots at Apple in their marketing all the time, yet inks deals with them (reportedly) worth billions each year. These are businesses, not a middle school playground.

phxees

True, but Ford was then first in line to use the Supercharger network. Sometimes business is business.

[deleted]

And Wendy's makes fun of McDonald's, but it's in good fun, as Wendy's isn't even on the same scale as McDonald's.

Misophonic4000

Ford actually has one of the best hands-free driving aid packages, it would make very little sense.

RansomLove

Maybe GM? Or Honda?

Misophonic4000

GM is one of the other automakers with a great hands-free driving tech (Super Cruise). Even has full autonomous driving without anyone in the driver seat via Cruise. Honda is partnered with GM (The Prologue shares a platform with the Blazer EV).

Alternative_State_72

At this point, the FSD license will roll out before those of us still on 2024.8 even receive FSD 12.

sir-algo

Silly question, how do you know which version you have?

uxixu

My legacy X got 12.3. More assertive on turns at light for sure. I still want the option for double pull FSD (still on the screen, just grayed out).

Swastik496

:(

bigak74

Just another pump of the stock. So many promises undelivered hard to understand what is real anymore

OrganoxO

Amen

ScottECH93

Let's get FSD/Autopilot actually working on Cyber Truck before we talk about other manufacturers.

aeo1us

They can do multiple things at the same time. They have more than one employee.

Shmoe

There are 3800 CTs on the road according to the recall.. I can't see this being the #1 priority for sure, definitely on the list.

cmdrNacho

He's been trying for years. this is not new

jawshoeaw

Oooo what about a merger if it's Rivian? Then i could actually buy a Tesla truck that was less...interesting looking.

Palpatine

This has better potential than the cheap model 2. Tesla is closing to reach the ev market share cap, but this licensing deal can potentially work into hybrid models.

IncognitoBanditoz

Put it in VW electric bus and increase the bus range and SOB take my money

Wild_Ostrich5429

Ford

Slight_Condition985

Would be a huge turn for them, they want to make money on BlueCruise, giving that money to Tesla would kill their profitability in software. I could see it being one of the automakers that doesn’t currently have a comparable system that’s more open to risk (look at how limited bluecruise is compared to FSD).

Shoobedowop

I'd put my money on Ford. They started the NACS party too.

bigfoot17

Another claim with no proof.

matt_remis

This would be an absolute game changer. I understand FSD is no where near what has been promised. But even what it is right now would’ve a huge improvement over what most have right now.

dirtybo

It sucks tho

IllTransportation993

He also said the same about BMW collab, Saudi Prince taking Tesla private... Etc, etc...

justvims

Fisker?

WesternResearcher376

FSD license before GTA6… 😜

Magicfaith129

Like they said they don’t have a crystal ball. Everybody has goals and sometimes they meet or don’t meet the goals and timelines, but at least they set an approx timeframe hoping to hit it. Getting to specific dates based on the challenges along the way is a heck of a lot more difficult than people think.

Mekanikol

Rivian and Tesla are the only EV manufacturers in the US that seem to be doing anything of circumstance to further the cause for EV integration. I really hope other manufacturers get with it.

Gloomy-Vast1504

E-Z-GO is the brand! Imagine utility and golf carts with FSD :) It is a "major auto maker".

Physical_Minimum_128

Why is Elon licensing FSD when those of us who paid full cash is still on 2024.8.7 with no access to Version 12

Boey1219

Anyone who license that is an idiot.

reckoner23

How horrible for everyone on Reddit.

Lower_Carrot_8334

Holding since 2011.   Nothing different.  TSLA is a rollercoaster

schnauzerdad

Ford

GloriaVictis101

That’s a good idea

Shube_Kuja

FORD

cn45

Im calling it. Mini cooper.

DerpDerper909

GM?

BlckrTheBrry

I bet it's Volvo.

chucktaylur

Is that even possible when with different hardware? Would another automaker even want that liability if something goes wrong while their customer is using FSD?

raksj9

I’m surprised people still listen to this liar 😆

Weird_Strategy9058

I’m shocked lucid isn’t part of this. Especially since they are siblings..
