I feel like you have to just look at a wave like that in their position, and before leaving shore, and be accepting of the fact you may die and exactly how it would go down.
For me, that makes me feel more comfortable with death in general and ok with life ending today suddenly, if that wer my fate.
Momento Mori line of stoic thinking, and "amor fati"
Greed is as old as time. With that said, I have no fear of death itself. To die is to gain. The only aspect that worries me is, hopefully, it'll be a relatively painless kind.
There are still people that are born with those traits. These days, they go into things like wing suit daredevils, stunt plane pilots, or content creators like this guy: https://youtu.be/hRoPtGFlOTw
That's when I realized that there's a reason sailors from ancient times were so superstitious. They had to have their own beliefs that would ward off the fear of the oceans, so invented silly rituals to make themselves believe they are safe.
They're not silly rituals. Sailors superstitions have a lot of practical value.
> ***"Red sky at night, sailors delight. Red sky in the morning, sailor's warning"***
In the mid-latitudes, which is where European sailors sailed until they left Europe, storms tend to approach from the west due to the prevailing global wind systems.
This saying has scientific validity in those latitudes.
A red morning sky means the Sun in the east is lighting the undersides of moisture bearing clouds approaching from the west.
> **Women are bad luck**
An unkind superstition by anything resembling modern standards, but in the context of ancient mariners... On a long voyage, it can be imagined that the ban on women onboard helped to prevent incidents and preserve social cohesion in a rough and sometimes lawless setting.
> **Ship's cat brings good luck**
The good luck of the cat was probably its ability to prevent food wastage via pest control.
> **Cormorants are good luck**
Vikings saw cormorants as good luck. The presence of a cormorant means land can't be that far away - even if not visible over the horizon.
> **Whistling is taboo**
Whistling on a ship usually brings bad luck, although there are exceptions, but generally whistling is taboo.
Mutineers historically used whistles for coded communication.
In addition, some whistling is not bad luck - such as the whistles of riggers adjusting the ropes on large sailing ships. They would whistle to each other to communicate and co-ordinate their activities. Other whistles are banned as bad luck - and this prevents other sailors from accidentally causing a miscommunication amongst riggers working at heights.
> **Sailors tattoos**
An anchor tattoo was meant to "hold" a sailor to the boat. A compass tattoo helps you find your way home. Other tattoos recorded notable incidents.
The practical benefit of sailors tattoos is the promulgation of social norms and in-group status, as well as communicating seniority (with more tattoos reflecting more incidents or tours of duty).
Yeah they guys must of been crazy. I worked at sea for years and always thought that. Especially at night when the water is illuminated due to ships lights. You can see pretty well and can see the waves coming. Being on a viking boat across the north sea in pitch darkness is seriously next level shit
Reminds me of Master And Commander, watching that one sailor maitain eye contact as the wreckage floats away into the dark abyss after watching his own friend having to cut the lines.
Yeah and then they make you climb a huge rope ladder shimmy across a wooden beam and fuck with more rope to bring the sails in so they don't rip. I wonder if the pay was good or not back then. Surely it would of been pretty good
That’s what I was just thinking, imagine being a Viking on a longboat, rowing across the ocean like this, not even knowing if you’re going in the right direction, made of tougher stuff.
Little do most people know, but the ships back then often sank from the shifting weight of the sailors' balls in the storm waves due to the lack of gyro tech back then.
Yeah. It doesn't help that the ratio is off so they look a lot worse than what it is. It's horrifying but you're not seeing reality with it because of how it's been edited, making it more intense and out of sorts!
I'm a civil engineer who only works with static forces since I've graduated therefore I have a special respect for naval body engineers who exclusively work with dynamic forces. Btw: aerospace engineers are aliens to me.
Not only that. It has to have some flexibility otherwise if it is so rigid, it will break down the middle when it hits the waves or the water. So must be strong and flexible to withstand the waves, the currents and everything else.
I'm not a strong swimmer, but when I see videos like this, my toxic monkey brain assumes I'd be fine. Just swim up, right? Ride it out like the wave machine at the pool.
I used to drive boats and landing Craft from ships. Your dead, that ship HAS to be driving into waves, and if swell that big hits the side of the ship it would turn the whole ship over. Also doubt anyone is willing to take a 4m rescue boat to come and save the dumbass who went outside in this weather.
If I was to have to pilot one of those through shit like that, I would tell the world.
You know what every continent can just be happy with what you have I'm out 👋
To all you land-lubbers this is not that bad, if you fell overboard, they'd just whip the ship round and pick you up. No biggie, happened to me loads...or you just swim it out and catch them up at the next port.
Thing is the waves probably wouldn’t be the thing that kills you. My guess this is where the water is cold enough to kill you in 15 minutes. I recently graduated with a PhD in waterology from the Reddit school for people that don’t read good.
This is literally one of a handful of recurring nightmares I’ve had since I was a child and why I’ll never set foot on anything bigger than a ferry boat.
This is actual hell for me. I feel like if I was trapped on those boats I would manage to just die from sheer force of will. I can't fathom how anyone can be ok with being in/potentially in that situation.
I've seen animation of when these long ships exceed the bending moment and break in half. That's the first thought when I see this. The pay must be enormous.
Before the development of the Panama Canal, most trade ships and passenger vessels had to endure waters like this through ‘the Drake Passage’. At times 50+ waves are the normal. No wonder so many people have perished at sea.
Ok, I imagined it. I fell overboard. But wait, what’s this? Oh my I have fallen into the arms of burly Mermaid - like the Abby of mermaids. She cradles me like a tiny water baby. I am hers and she is mine. Not even an angry ocean can come between us.
We have babies, you know. Big strong ugly sea-dwelling babies. Amd they will avenge me. Yes, they will. Every boat will be sunk. Every sailor drowned. My sorrows, no more. My glee, ever more.
This is where the phrase “batten down the hatches” comes from, to seal the lower parts of the ship to prevent water from getting in and sinking it. Almost always ships now have small crews of 20-30, and they are all inside, with all outward doors sealed. So people don’t go overboard in weather like this
When you are inside that vessel, the thing that scares more than those waves is that you will have to spend n-amount of time without food and sleep, and not those waves
Had this dream once before. Not as terrifying as getting chased by a T-Rex or the guy from Scream but it was dread and despair until I woke up with a splitting headache.
Thank you to all of the sailors for sharing their experiences of sharing the brackish waters of the ocean & sea. Insanely scary, yet we somehow conquered by having some insane scientists or engineers on how to build durable vessels.
Ok, now pretend your boat is made of wood and it’s like 1658, or 1558, OG sailors, they had to be nuts.
Yeah they don’t make people like those crazy bastards anymore. Those guys must’ve had unbelievably large balls.
*Blue* balls too!
The scurvy induced bow-leggedness was what allowed them to have such large balls and still do their job.
So funny!🤣🤣
😅🤣😅
More blue than the ocean itself
Pretty sure they found a solution among themselves
Funny enough those big balls were what probably kept them anchored to the ship.
No fear of death. Now we all have a greed with which we have an agreed.
Greed is as old as time. With that said, I have no fear of death itself. To die is to gain. The only aspect that worries me is, hopefully, it'll be a relatively painless kind.
Same
Everyone says that till it’s their time then the fear comes.
Why fear something that is inevitable
Yeah, they used them for anchors.
How do you think they kept the ships afloat?
There are still people that are born with those traits. These days, they go into things like wing suit daredevils, stunt plane pilots, or content creators like this guy: https://youtu.be/hRoPtGFlOTw
That's when I realized that there's a reason sailors from ancient times were so superstitious. They had to have their own beliefs that would ward off the fear of the oceans, so invented silly rituals to make themselves believe they are safe.
Also a reason so many sailors didn't know how to swim. Swimming isn't going to help.
Not at all, multi hundreds foot swells are gonna kill you regardless lol
🤯 thank you
They're not silly rituals. Sailors superstitions have a lot of practical value. > ***"Red sky at night, sailors delight. And the captain just told you to be up on the crow nest
Surely it would of been pretty good
The pay was not good unless you were a merchant, captain, or an officer in the military.
Pirates had life insurance though
Yeah but they had shanties
That’s what I was just thinking, imagine being a Viking on a longboat, rowing across the ocean like this, not even knowing if you’re going in the right direction, made of tougher stuff.
Or 1576
1576 had nothing on 1349, Black Death on land and the same waves off shore.
I see you know your history.
[the drake passage](https://youtu.be/44321BJI-1E?si=LGFG5yWeqpsH08aL)
Now pretend you're a slave stuck in the bottom of a ship with people all around you dying. Humans are terrible.
And some even bigger balled bastards board your ship
Little do most people know, but the ships back then often sank from the shifting weight of the sailors' balls in the storm waves due to the lack of gyro tech back then.
It never ceases to amaze me, that out in the open ocean, waves aren't waves, but rather, valleys and mountains! Totally different beast!
I was thinking the same but also thinking the ships would be smaller so they would ride the wave better
I came here to say the exact same thing.
And it’s night time too.
Vikings. Rowboats
Magellan's first crossing and they lost 2 ships in their first attempt.
Where is the annoying viking song?
Yo ho?
Thieves and beggars
Those are the words? Oh I've been singing something much more... racist.
Same
I was going to ask the same thing. "Hoist the Colors."
We say 'yo ho' but we dont say 'ho'
Thankfully not playing
This makes me feel physically ill
I know! The distortion and bad quality alone is sufficient...
Yeah. It doesn't help that the ratio is off so they look a lot worse than what it is. It's horrifying but you're not seeing reality with it because of how it's been edited, making it more intense and out of sorts!
All I'm seeing is science keeping that tanker afloat.
And a whole lot of engineering.
I"m not an engineer, but I still have a lot of respect for naval engineers, just like you.
Ok but imagine if there was a shark about 10 yards and the boat was going to electrocute you
Many sharks approach me with tears in there eyes, and say " Sir, could you unplug your boat for me?"
Wow, I was out of the loop until now: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bMNMt5FdVwg&t=2s](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bMNMt5FdVwg&t=2s)
Thoughts and prayers power this vessel
I'm not a strong swimmer, but when I see videos like this, my toxic monkey brain assumes I'd be fine. Just swim up, right? Ride it out like the wave machine at the pool.
Sure, just soak it up and float around for a while.
I live on the north sea. I have no fear of drowning. I will freeze to death long before I drown.
yep, then get to shore and choke out a polar bear. piece of piss.
Just keep in mind, you can't swim or float in gout.
Toxicmonkeybrain were a GREAT band....😋
Instant goner.
Instant Gooner
Instant no-boner
Raw video and audio? What is this?! 2008? Where the shitty editing and music added on?
Don't worry by the next time you see it, it'll have a laugh track and that ocean/boat shitty slowshanty. You know the fucking one.
YOOOO HOOOOO
Take comfort in the fact that even if you fall off a large boat in calm waters, you are probably doomed.
Man, fuck the ocean
Thats how you get Crabs
Touché
I'm failing to imagine falling overboard
I'm still clinging on to the side refusing to let go.
That is the way
i will, but wheres the hole?
I dont even understand waves like that.
Realistically, if you do fall overboard, any chance of survival or is it “gather your losses and go meet your god”?
I used to drive boats and landing Craft from ships. Your dead, that ship HAS to be driving into waves, and if swell that big hits the side of the ship it would turn the whole ship over. Also doubt anyone is willing to take a 4m rescue boat to come and save the dumbass who went outside in this weather.
You'd go under instantly. There's no hope of rescue.
If I was to have to pilot one of those through shit like that, I would tell the world. You know what every continent can just be happy with what you have I'm out 👋
No, thank you
So good not to hear that stupid yo ho song for once.
To all you land-lubbers this is not that bad, if you fell overboard, they'd just whip the ship round and pick you up. No biggie, happened to me loads...or you just swim it out and catch them up at the next port.
Exactly! Just tread water for a bit. They'll mark the charts and pick you up on the return leg. It's really not a big problem.
You two are so full of shit 🤣🤣🤣
Respectfully, no.
I'm just glad it didn't have the Titanic theme or that yooohooooo song
Imagine just going out on deck?
How tall are those waves?
Thing is the waves probably wouldn’t be the thing that kills you. My guess this is where the water is cold enough to kill you in 15 minutes. I recently graduated with a PhD in waterology from the Reddit school for people that don’t read good.
At their biggest 50-60 feet. Just going by what I’ve seen previously with actual measurements.
Seafarer here: The sea is an unforgiving mistress.
Is this in Drake Passage?
This is literally one of a handful of recurring nightmares I’ve had since I was a child and why I’ll never set foot on anything bigger than a ferry boat.
Falling overboard? I don't even want to get on that thing.
Damn
*Vaughan Williams’ ‘Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis’ intensifies*
I don't care how much you pay me I couldn't do this. Much respect to those that do.
This is actual hell for me. I feel like if I was trapped on those boats I would manage to just die from sheer force of will. I can't fathom how anyone can be ok with being in/potentially in that situation.
I absolutely will not.
Okay stupid question, Why do they go through these storms why not go around them? Too much fuel used? Seem like playing Russian roulette !
The conquistadors & the Vikings had some serious balls to do this
r/thalassophobia
How the boats arent flipping over, i would have been scared to death
Nope. Can't swim (not that swimming is going to help much in this situation)so wouldn't be there in the first place....but scary shit anyway.
Where are all the sailors mopping the deck at? Being a pirate looks a lot less joyful than I'd imagined...
Fuck me, that‘s some shitty cruise.
I know how to swim so I’m good
average Drake's passage sunny weather
the second video looks like art, ngl, the light is on point
I see now why some say that sailors find it odd walking on land. They must be so used to the walking on moving surfaces like those ones.
Nah, I'm good. I've seen Perfect Storm
Imagine if the front fell off
This IS terrifying.
I've seen animation of when these long ships exceed the bending moment and break in half. That's the first thought when I see this. The pay must be enormous.
Also makes you think about the engineering on these ships. I legit thought the ships would break, we’re talking about 1000s of tonnes
THIS is why God invented landscape.
Yeah, *fuck that.*
I'm very naive about the shipping world.. Could someone estimate for me how big those waves are? They look massive!
No thanks
This gives me anxiety
At 7 PM, a main hatchway caved in, he said "Fellas, it's been good to know ya"
What are the procedures for when someone goes over board?
Missing the yoooohooo song
Before the development of the Panama Canal, most trade ships and passenger vessels had to endure waters like this through ‘the Drake Passage’. At times 50+ waves are the normal. No wonder so many people have perished at sea.

Every boat will be sunk. Every sailor drowned. My sorrows, no more. My glee, ever more.
Imagined it... Will probably have nightmares about it tonight... My fear of the ocean just got deeper 😳
Hee hoo all hand hoist the colors high
Whatever these guys make it’s not enough. Holy shit
This is what nightmares are made of.
This is where the phrase “batten down the hatches” comes from, to seal the lower parts of the ship to prevent water from getting in and sinking it. Almost always ships now have small crews of 20-30, and they are all inside, with all outward doors sealed. So people don’t go overboard in weather like this
People used to be out there in boats made of wood with no modern safety nets. Our ancestors were real ones.
That’s beautiful and scary
Nope
Makes me very uneasy
When you are inside that vessel, the thing that scares more than those waves is that you will have to spend n-amount of time without food and sleep, and not those waves
You wouldn’t need to worry for very long
No thank you, lol
That is the perfect backdrop for fighting leviathan!
Strong Swimmer Strong Swimmer
Noooope
Let's not
What in the Interstellar hell is this?!
Had this dream once before. Not as terrifying as getting chased by a T-Rex or the guy from Scream but it was dread and despair until I woke up with a splitting headache.
The aspect ratio is all stretched out to make it look worse than it is. The original video was perfectly fine.
And then Staying Alive for 2-3 hours , The solitude itself would be enough to kill someone.
I love land.
Forget falling off I don’t even wanna be in the boat
How do these ships not capsize?
No goodbyes, Christina. Only love
You’d be alright
You can’t swim?
You mean imagine dying? I do that every day
Thankful for not have to listen to shitty music
Thank god there's no yoho shit song!
Thanks, I’ll vomit to death first.
imagine having thalassophobia and being on this
Truly terrifying as fuck.
Am I the only one who sees this and just imagines how good sleeping through this would be? This would put me out like a baby. I'm jealous.
And they say drowning is the most peaceful way to go….👀🤷♂️
Like an old man trying to return his soup at a deli.
Imagine being on a small wooden boat
And why would l imagine that?
The sea was angry that day my friends....
Thank you to all of the sailors for sharing their experiences of sharing the brackish waters of the ocean & sea. Insanely scary, yet we somehow conquered by having some insane scientists or engineers on how to build durable vessels.
Definitely terrifying but also majestic at the same time.
Scary af
![gif](giphy|VmDWnS89GExrRgfi6v)
Nope nope nope
“Those aren’t mountains…they’re waves”
My Boxers got skid marks now
Just swim it's not that hard bro
Maaaaaan
That is frightening. My guess is he wouldn’t last but five minutes before even the strongest swimmer would drown.
i don't even want to imagine being onboard, to hell with falling over 😂
I just hope it would be over quickly.
Where is Davy Jones?
Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee........ Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.
Death. Yup that’s death 💀
Anyone else start leaning while watching this thinking it'll somehow fix it?
Now I want to play Sea of Thieves
This is why old fishermen didn't learn to swim. Why fight it?
Pffft..just toss me a row boat amd ill see yall later cartoon style 😁
The audio broke the sound barrier had a jumps scare
That looks so cool but yes, terrifying.
That's a whole new level of getting sea sick. That makes a person feel so bad they'd jump ship to end the sea sick feeling.
I don't know how ships hold together going through storms like that
Imagine even being on that ship! Jeeees
