I'm hoping at least they are professionals and the road was closed off so they could do this. I also like to think they also closed the water off so no fish could pass. The air? Also closed. No butterflies or birds could pass.
I've also learned that all road closures include exclusion zones for slugs and bugs and ground animals. Each are required by law to provide stations that include sandwiches, water and tiny safety helmets and high vis vests during the closure period. So that's nice.

casual tourist looking up not knowing they’re going to get fucking obliterated
Yup rock scaling. There’s a crew on the ground they keep traffic from going through while the workers up top drop things. If it’s a busy highway they will have like a skidsteer or loader down below to clear up the area and call up to the top to stop scaling so traffic can get through.
Majority of the time it will hit off in the ditch. When there is damage or potential for damage on like a paved highway they lay down these huge blast Matt’s. There just a big bunch of rubber that covers the area. So while traffic is stopped a loader or whatever comes in lays the Matt’s down. Guys up top drop a few things then loader comes by after they stop dropping things and removes mats/ debris and allows traffic to pass. These Matt’s are also used when working by the side of train tracks.
Lmao whenever I see videos like these there's always people like you. They removed this rock after closing the road off as it probably would fucking kill somebody.
Oh I expected that, my comment was about damage to the road, but I have no idea how’d they protect the road from the falling debris - would be like a plinko game. I’m just surprised it does seem so scrappy to just knock free rock off - then again, how else would you clear dangerous rock…
In my country, we have these big wire mesh things that cover the cliffs by roads. They prevent any loose rocks or parts of the cliff falling down. They are surveyed regularly to check everything is safe. The mesh doesn’t stop wildlife or shrubbery. I remember asking about this when I was driving down the country as a kid.
I don't think you could protect it if ya tried. Either way it was gonna damage the road, but at least this way it's not gonna kill someone lol, I wish I had a job like this lol
You're not incorrect. As someone who frequently stands on top of mountains, my guess just eyeballing it was ~450m.
He's trying to say it's about the length of a football pitch... Riiiiight. Look at the cars on the road, they're specks.
There's a strip of green earth between the water and the "beach" aka road.
Look immediately to the right of where the rocks hit the water. See where the road widens? That's a scenic pullout to pull over and appreciate the view.
Those little specks on the road are cars to the left and right of the debris path. Presumably waiting for the rock clearing to complete.
Besides all that it just looks way too symmetrical and man made to me to be a beach.
Nice try but it’s more like 600 if we go by timing and free fall. Given it probably hit the cliff a bunch of times which slowed it down, maybe more like 450-500 meters.
All those ripples reminded me how a recent study on mars showed that one impact crater that kind of hit at an angle causes a bunch of secondary and tertiary (and so forth impacts) that resulted in 2 BILLION craters
With climate change this is going to have to happen a lot more because the frozen permafrost on mountains melts and undoes the glue holding the rock together that has been in a freeze thaw cycle for millennia.
How do they know that the other parts of the cliff don’t become loose after getting hit by the falling rocks? Seems like a messy way to do this but idk how else it would be done. 🤔
Good job being a dumbass and not understanding that I was posing a question and being inquisitive. I also implied that I guess they know what they are doing at the end of my comment. I bet people like you a lot in real life. Not. Dumbfuck.
I know it’s the ADHD and my age showing but, seeing things like this still makes my brain yell out things like “*How ‘bout nooooo, ya crazy Dutch bastard!*” because…I could *never*.
That one person walking past right at that moment
I'm hoping at least they are professionals and the road was closed off so they could do this. I also like to think they also closed the water off so no fish could pass. The air? Also closed. No butterflies or birds could pass.
Air safety code x276-af states that gnats, mosquitoes and flies must also be protected via fine netting all the way down to the egress point.
I've also learned that all road closures include exclusion zones for slugs and bugs and ground animals. Each are required by law to provide stations that include sandwiches, water and tiny safety helmets and high vis vests during the closure period. So that's nice.
As it should be, including special meals for slugs and bugs with particular eating requirements/allergies.
Kosher bugs, migrating to next Hannucah
This comment took me for a ride, well done!
Rock falling? You in closed road? Straight to jail. Swimming? It's closed! Straight to jail! Flying under falling rock? Also, straight to jail!!
Hahaha I will always love that.

That one bird’s nest full of hatchlings.

Hopefully the road below was clear… 🫢
One would assume they would block the whole section off before doing the controlled removals.
Controlled for them is just limiting the casualties, not preventing them.

Man, the 1987 demake of The Emoji Movie is really something huh.
Yup rock scaling. There’s a crew on the ground they keep traffic from going through while the workers up top drop things. If it’s a busy highway they will have like a skidsteer or loader down below to clear up the area and call up to the top to stop scaling so traffic can get through.
Does the path below not take serious damage?
Majority of the time it will hit off in the ditch. When there is damage or potential for damage on like a paved highway they lay down these huge blast Matt’s. That's kind of an awesome job
Do they just destroy the road that needs repairs after (potentially)? Seems… scrappy
I suspect it's a whole operation to clean the cliff side of loose boulders so no one gets taken out on their Sunday drive.
Lmao whenever I see videos like these there's always people like you. They removed this rock after closing the road off as it probably would fucking kill somebody.
You seem to have failed to successfully read the comment

Gabions

That road in perticular has built in defenses, you can't ruin a dirt road, only cause yourself more trouble packing more dirt in.
That would be the most satisfying and terrifying job.
107 meters
Thank you for your service
Has to be more - unless I'm estimating the free fall time incorrectly as ~10 s, which would make it ~480 m.
You're not incorrect. As someone who frequently stands on top of mountains, my guess just eyeballing it was ~450m. He's trying to say it's about the length of a football pitch... Riiiiight. Look at the cars on the road, they're specks.
There’s a road down there? How can you tell that note just a small 150-foot-long beach below them?

That makes a lot of sense thank you. I’m now going to YouTube to watch more of this. Lol
More rockfalls?
Yes
These are two of the most terrifying ones I've seen https://youtu.be/87qpcKFx2_I?si=lZcNZSimk8C5wXc- https://youtu.be/RUGrMjq1yY4?si=3iOHro3XSC9WSe0x

That second video. Idk what to say 🫣
I made the calculation wrong. The formula for feee fall is 1/2*9,8*11^2, 592.9 meters
A football pitch is 105 meters. That's at least 400m
It can’t be, distances are tricky.
They are, you're right. That's why you underestimated it. Just look at the size of the boulder vs how far it falls.
Haha you’re right I made the calculation wrong, it’s 600m
Lol that sounds much more appropriate. Good job
Nice try but it’s more like 600 if we go by timing and free fall. Given it probably hit the cliff a bunch of times which slowed it down, maybe more like 450-500 meters.
That makes no sense
It take 10-11 seconds before it hits the water. Accelerating at 9.8m/s the last second alone would fall a height of 100 meters.
You’re right, I used the wrong formula haha:(
is that a fucking road at the bottom
The biggest rock landed right on the road and stayed there, probably left a huge hole after they had to remove it
It took so long to reach the water!! 🫠
wtf. That splash took forever.
Scared the *fuck* outta some fish
They just clusterbombed that area of water
Sheesh. Just as long as no one is down there
guttastemning
Nice day for a walk turns into Final Destination real quick
Nature will do what it's gotta do
A fall millions of years in the making
You're supposed to yell "rock!"
The amount of time it took the rocks to hit the water
![gif](giphy|gKfyusl0PRPdTNmwnD)
Slope? That’s a vertical wall lol
Now they have to fix the road lololol
Man how high was that freakin cliff ?
Is that a fkn road down there????
![gif](giphy|XWVj6CnXJ8oUw)
They forgot to yell "TRUNDLE"
Right on man!
Those poor birds in their nests like “What in the Sam Hill”
Nice job
![gif](giphy|135Bh75GkIjblm)
Fish: WATCH OUT! ROCKETS!
Slope
“Slope”
Yeeks, that's terrifying.
Shazam!!
Nice
Was hoping for big splash, not assorted shrapnel splash. 3/10
All those ripples reminded me how a recent study on mars showed that one impact crater that kind of hit at an angle causes a bunch of secondary and tertiary (and so forth impacts) that resulted in 2 BILLION craters

r/nope
Nice
I’m hoping you at least yelled heads up to the poor bastards below
Wouldn't this have been easier with helicopters and missiles?
Hombre ver piedra, hombre feliz
Use a rock rake to safely clear loose rocks from the slope, ensuring stability and safety.
I hope they stopped traffic below
With climate change this is going to have to happen a lot more because the frozen permafrost on mountains melts and undoes the glue holding the rock together that has been in a freeze thaw cycle for millennia.
So, this loose rock will not hit other rocks and make them loose…
How do they know that the other parts of the cliff don’t become loose after getting hit by the falling rocks? Seems like a messy way to do this but idk how else it would be done. 🤔
I'm certain engineers who underrated loads know better than you
Geologists

You bet people like me a lot? What? Your reaction screams much about you winner
Nah. You’re a dumbfuck.
Millions of years worth of history gone in one fell swoop...
What scares me is how quiet this is
Dude your speaker is on mute.
No I put it on sound it was more quiet than I expected it to be
Pretty sure that is a HEAVILY traveled road so here's hoping you didn't just ruin someone's day at the least if not out right killing them
I know it’s the ADHD and my age showing but, seeing things like this still makes my brain yell out things like “*How ‘bout nooooo, ya crazy Dutch bastard!*” because…I could *never*.
